Nigel Raymond Latta ONZM was a New Zealand clinical psychologist, author and broadcaster. He has been described as "New Zealand's best-known psychologist".
Nigel Raymond Latta was born and raised in Oamaru, New Zealand. He attended Waitaki Boys' High School & he studied Marine Science and Zoology at the University of Otago, and completed a Master of Philosophy with First Class Honours in Psychology at the University of Auckland, along with a postgraduate diploma in clinical psychology.
Latta worked as a consultant in his field for private companies and government social service agencies, including Department of Corrections, the New Zealand Police and Child Youth and Family.
In the 2010s, he became known for his true crime documentaries and psychology-based television series, as the host of Beyond The Darklands, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Teenagers and The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show, and a science show called Nigel Latta Blows Stuff Up, among others. In 2016, Latta co-found Ruckus Films, a production company which produced several feature documentaries including Born This Way: Awa’s Story and Stan. He also began presenting general interest television shows, such as The Hard Stuff with Nigel Latta, which approached social and political issues, and You've Been Scammed by Nigel Latta which examines common types of scams.
Latta was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2012 Queen's Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Honours, for services to psychology.
In September 2024, Latta revealed that he had been diagnosed with "inoperable and incurable" terminal stomach cancer, and that he was undergoing chemotherapy that had shrunk the tumour by about 60 percent. Latta was told that he had 6 to 12 months to live. In February 2025, the prognosis was reduced to four weeks after a scan indicated that the cancer had spread to his lungs. However, Latta later said that, because of the treatment he was receiving, he believed he would continue to live for "years and years". In March 2025, he stated that he was no longer terminally ill. Latta died on 30 September 2025, at the age of 58 at the Mercy Hospice in Ponsonby, Auckland.

A fun read with a general "less is more" approach that contrasts to the usual over-abundance of advice and guidance. At times the jokey digressions ramble a bit, trying a bit too hard on the humour front (or to fill up a word count?). However the "Mad Aunt Harriet" advice is worth the price of admission alone.
Why would you write a book about daughters without having one, but that does not mean they are good. This is disgusting and I threw up on it. ITs stained now. The author is clearly uneducated with absolutely no understanding of women and misogyny etc. apparently changing tyres 'is not that hard.' This is funny, because once I walked past Nigel Latta trying to change a tyre very unsuccessfully. He's just a dumb women I guess. He was also crying at the time about being a virgin. This was the day before his first son was conceived so he must have had sexc for the first time at a very old age when he finally found a woman that he could form his misogyny on. HE probably likes not like the other girls women bc he secretly wants a man - he seems obsessed with spending time around people that can change a tyre and know what napalm is. His desire for his FUTURE daughter to act and dress in the way that he expects the women he is attracted to to act and dress shows his inner thoughts. Why are you looking at a 13 yr olds skin and thinking about how it looked years later! This man has had a net negative impact on the world and when he dies it will be a better place. P.S. glittery girls are gorgeous girls P.P.S. I don't know why I am surprised to hear this from a man named Nigel...
4 estrellas.
This was under the bed so in the interests of moving the pile, I read an unlikely book but was ultimately pleased I did. After a slow introduction, I found such topics as the developmental differences between boys and girls really thought provoking. Talking to your kids about the important things is often difficult and there are some really good helpful tips here. There’s something of interest for anybody, especially if you’ve been a parent or caregiver of girls. Latta writes in a very accessible and often amusing way. I will hand this my son and he will hopefully read it!
A good dose of humour mixed in with personal examples, research based summaries and helpful bullet points. I got this out from the library to read and will probably go and buy a copy to reference over the next 10+ years.
So, i not father yet, but any info about raising children is good. The book contains must know things, kind of them are obvious, maybe not for everyone. So yeap, go ahead, read it, and you would feel that you are talking to the mate, because the author from the first pages shew that all men are in the same boat and he's talking as you would expect him.
