Natural-born charmers, cockatiels are small colorful parrots native to the Australian desert. When raised by people, they're usually calm and cuddly and have an inquisitive, adventurous disposition. I found a cockatiel walking down the road about 9 months ago, so much of this book about deciding to get a pet, choosing a bird, preparing for it and all the first steps including initial training did not relate to me. But this is an excellent book on all those, and other, areas. It is a bit repetitive but then if this is all new to you that repetition would be helpful. Had I had this book early on--say, if I had "planned" on getting a cockatiel--this would have saved me a great deal of time looking up answers to my questions individually on the web. If you are considering a cockatiel or just bought one, this book is a good way to learn about your new pet and understanding what life with one may be like. If friends of yours are considering a cockatiel or just purchased one, this is an ideal gift.

This book was very useful in covering all the basics of getting a new pet cockatiel. Its downfall was that it didn't cover anything WELL. It was a very helpful first read, but I haven't really consulted it since.
