Basic overview of al-Qaeda and its context in Islamic History. Seems mostly compiled from news articles in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and Operation Enduring Freedom. Rather light tabloid take on the topic, especially almost 20 years after publication. There where a slew of these after 9/11, quick cash ins from publishers looking to capitalize on the publics discovery of al-Qaeda after 9/11.

I had little knowledge about this organization before reading this book, which is a introduction history of Al Qaeda from inception in 1988 to 9/11/2001. It is somewhat outdated due to no updates on the organization past 2001. I did learn how Al Qaeda is organized and funded and now see why it is so important and difficult to impact their funding. I also have a better understanding of motivation, intent, and mind-set of Al Qaeda.
It is possible that the reader could come away with a feeling of "we are doomed" but I did not. I came away from this read with a better understanding of some of the actions of my government and a feeling of "they do not know us". It is also possible to react in a negative manner to the hatred that is represented in this book from Al Qaeda Muslims to Americans, but I am motivated to find ways in my own life to promote peace and harmony and understanding.
