After years of frequent moves following her mother’s death, Chloe Saunders’s life is finally settling down. She is attending art school, pursuing her dreams of becoming a director, making friends, meeting boys. Her biggest concern is that she’s not developing as fast as her friends are. But when puberty does hit, it brings more than hormone surges. Chloe starts seeing ghosts–everywhere, demanding her attention. After she suffers a breakdown, her devoted aunt Lauren gets her into a highly recommended group home.
At first, Lyle House seems a pretty okay place, except for Chloe’s small problem of fearing she might be facing a lifetime of mental illness. But as she gradually gets to know the other kids at the home–charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek, obnoxious Tori, and Rae, who has a “thing” for fire–Chloe begins to realize that there is something that binds them all together, and it isn’t your usual “problem kid” behaviour. And together they discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home either…
The Awakening The Darkest Powers Trilogy, Book II
Book II in the Darkest Powers trilogy takes us deeper into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the everyday with riveting effect.
If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl – someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I’m as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment – not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a group of people who call themselves The Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I’m a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.
I’m running for my life with three of my supernatural friends – a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch – and we have to find someone who can help us gain our freedom back before The Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.
The Reckoning The Darkest Powers Trilogy, Book III
Only two weeks ago, life was all too predictable. But that was before I saw my first ghost. Now along with my supernatural friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, I'm on the run from the Edison Group, which genetically altered us as part of their sinister experiment. We're hiding in a safe house that might not be as safe as it seems. We'll be gone soon anyway, back to rescue those we'd left behind and take out the Edison Group . . . or so we hope.
Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.
Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.
I can honestly say that this is one of the most underrated series out there. Everyone talks about the mortal instruments, the hunger games or even the vampire diaries, that twilight crap, being good (some are far from it) but I would put the darkest powers right up there with them. The first book had a good intro, I loved the way Armstrong set the atmosphere of where everything began which was at Lyle house. A lot of the time I can't stand to continue a book because of the setting but this one was perfect. Awakening was more of a transition book but still good nonetheless. There was never a doubt in my mind as to which brother I liked more. Simon was (at least to me) the friend type and I just knew deep down that she wasn't going to pick him in the end. Yeah, Derek's description is a little bit out of the ordinary but I think that's what made him so lovable, and if the author can make you like the more unorthodox over the generic, well all the more to them. Yeah, Derek had acne and maybe not the greatest attitude, but he definitely progressed. He showed his great qualities, like protecting the ones he loved, intelligence and strength. I've re-read this series so many times and I could do it again. I would FOR SURE recommend these books for anyone interested in the supernatural genre.

Kelley Armstrong is #1 on my list of favourite authors thanks to her phenomenal WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD series, so I thought it was high time that I gave her Young Adult trilogy a chance. Like most first installments, this audiobook has its share of flaws, but still managed to do a decent job of introducing the characters, and the DARKEST POWERS universe. The paranormal elements were subtle in the earlier chapters which was kind of disappointing, and the author immediately painted all of Chloe’s parental figures in a distasteful light which is a personal pet peeve of mine where this genre is concerned. I did like how Saunders conquered her fears by putting everything into the context of a movie, it was very teenage overactive imagination, and I’m confident that Derek and I will get along just fine. There was of course a cliff hanger which twisted my arm into binge listening to all three.
THE AWAKENING ~ 4 Stars:
Book 1 focused more on world-building while as this one was all about the action; the kids are still on the run from the Edison Group, Souza had his first encounter with werewolves and it did NOT go well, and living on the streets comes with its own set of challenges as well. I’ve enjoyed watching Chloe and Derek’s relationship progress throughout this trilogy, they get lots of alone time in this installment, and their dialogue is definitely one of the highlights of this story. Unfortunately this novel was somewhat bogged down by Tori’s annoying POV, and the characters’ run-in with the wolves gave me some pause because it took place near Syracuse, NY which is close to the North American Pack’s home base, and none of the WOTO weres would have dealt with a youngin the way Derek was treated in THE AWAKENING. Mutts? Anyway, another quick and satisfying listen from Armstrong.
THE RECKONING ~ 5 Stars:
Chloe and co. received some much needed coaching from Andrew’s team, however that quickly backfired when the adults realized that their charges trump them by leaps and bounds in the power department. I really hated Margaret, her insolence and insistence on pushing Saunders to crank up the juice resulted in a brilliant oh-shit moment that served as her just deserts. The author tied up the bulk of this series’ lose ends with finesse, and I knew from the get-go that DARKEST POWERS was set in the WOTO universe, but in this installment that was finally confirmed with references to the various cabals, and how the story was linked to Savannah & Adam’s short in Kelley Armstrong’s OTHERWORLD NIGHTS anthology. I very much liked how the romance concluded, and some interesting new characters were introduced towards the end that have left me scrambling to place them—the DARKNESS RISING trilogy perhaps?
NARRATION:
Cassandra Morris’ narration was appropriate for these audiobooks, her voice fit that of the fifteen year old MC’s, and she incorporated Chloe’s speech impediment into the dialogue admirably. However, as the story progressed and the heroine evolved, the child-like tone would have benefited from a slight adjustment. I had zero issues with listening to these installments one after the other because the performance was homogeneous, and the character voices didn’t deviate. The pacing did Armstrong’s writing style proud, and the built-in creep factor that comes with seeing ghosts was always present. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another Young Adult title that featured Morris as the narrator.
This series is set in the same world as Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series, however that doesn't become extremely apparent until around the second and third books. I read the first book and really wondered if it would be any good. However, the fact that I sat around in bed and read the whole book non-stop until I was finished says quite a lot. This series is nothing like I've ever seen. Chloe is a 15-year-old girl who just wants a normal life, though everything out of the ordinary ends up happening to her. She is taken to Lyle house where she meets a group of people who are all thought to be mentally unstable as she too thinks she is, and throughout The Summoning she begins to learn more about the brothers (who are not actually blood-related) Derek and Simon, and about herself and the fact that she indeed sees ghosts, can talk to them, and even more. As Chloe discovers more, along with Derek and Simon, as well as the other housemates, Rae, Liz, and the hateful Tori, some very bloody secrets are unraveled about Lyle House and it meant one thing. They must run. I've said it before, and I will say it again, Kelley Armstrong does a fantastic job with weaving a storyline so concrete and absolute, with a world full of mysteries, and yet with very certain boundaries, that the world in her books become reality to the reader. It's not a story with untouchable perfect characters, and supernatural races and beings who are indestructible. On the contrary, there are limits and consequences that are very human to each of the races as well as the characters. And not only is the world realistic, but the story and lead-up to the realizations in the books are slow and steady and so well hinted that the books just come together perfectly. Kelley Armstrong has yet to fail me in making a story that isn't realistic and down to earth, and not mention romantic. The build up of the romantic plot is just as subtly and well done as is the action, almost as though the characters are guiding themselves through an adventure and not a story being told. The characters are imperfect and human to the very raw emotion, and the relationships and interactions between them amaze me. Though the sex and adult content are toned down many notches, as well as the change in writing style, compared to her adult series, there is plenty of humour and swearing to go around. Along with suspenseful action, daring adventure, and the sutble build-up of romance, this trilogy is by far the diverse urban fantasy supernatural series I've ever read. Loved it.
This world and series was so really high quality YA that after I read it I immediately bought her first novel in her adult series. Bitten or something. It was really really really awful. It's hard to believe that one writer could make two such entirely different impressions, but there you go. I loved this. Clean, plot driven, good character development, appropriate and believable romance, enough action, and a different fresh world without being weird. The main character was interesting and a teenager without being annoying. The romance was subtle and authentic. Anyway, I liked it so much I'm going to have to read it again.
I have so much love for this trilogy. Kelley Armstrong's spin on modern day necromancers grabs the attention and sympathy of the reader immediately. Chloe Saunders has just hit puberty and her powers are starting to flair up. She is haunted by dreams and ghostly specters that no one else can see. After being placed in a home for psychologically disturbed teens, she uncovers a conspiracy that threatens her life and the lives of those around her. This has to be one of the best series that Kelley Armstrong has written. If you enjoyed this series, check out Kelley Armstrong's "No Humans Involved" starring necromancer/spiritualist Jamie Vegas.
While not without its flaws, Darkest Powers is my favourite YA series by far. My mom bought it for me back in the early 2010s and I haven't stopped loving the story or the characters since. It's absolutely wonderful, should've been as popular as Twilight, and is an easy 5/5.
However: 1. My view is heavily clouded by nostalgia so YMMV. 2. There's definitely some mental ableism and demonization of psychotropic medication, and I don't recommend reading this series if you think that'll hurt you.
Omfg! Wat een boek! In een woord! Prachtserie!

loved the series... and the developing of the story...is not always what you want... but the story of Chloe...takes people to a whole new level of fantasy...and in the end...maybe love¿?...haha.. just saying!!but loved the books!!!
Loved this series, very cool. Reminded me of the tv series "Heroes", which I loved except in these books the characters are younger, I love Derek though.
I had read this series during my week camping and adored it. I feel her characters were truly captivating. Her descriptions and details were on cue! Great story ! Fantastic work!
I plunged in and read the three novels at once as the library I was working at had the three in one book. I loved this trilogy! I found it extremely interesting to have a character within the super natural relm who isn't the typical vampire, witch, or werewolf. Though their in here too which I love even more!
15-year-old Chloe is frightened and confused by the visions that have been plaguing her. She sees people and things that aren’t there, people and things that terrify her but that nobody else can see. Quickly labeled as mentally ill and shipped off to a live-in youth centre, Chloe is determined to prove that she doesn’t belong there. As she learns more about the centre and the other young teens who live there, she starts to understand that there is something far more dangerous and sinister going on beneath the surface than she thought at first.
The ideas behind this book are not new. Supernatural powers show up in adolescence, kids are misunderstood and sent away, people want to control them and their powers, and there’s a classic battle of good against evil (or at least power-hungry). Youth going up against an unfair adult system is a recurring theme in young adult fantasy and science fiction, and this book is no different. But that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable! Sometimes the same themes show up in books time and time again because they’re entertaining, they’re exciting or they make us think. This is, first and foremost, a story about struggling to find yourself in a world where you don’t quite fit in. It’s about fighting against an unfair adult organization that is much stronger than you are.
The Darkest Powers has an obligatory teenage angst love triangle. I don’t have anything against love triangles, although I do feel that they're overdone. This one was refreshingly believable and it wasn’t quite so obvious who Chloe would choose in the end. I found myself rooting for all of the three main characters in the book; no one is perfect, but they are all likeable.
This is a light, fun read. There are some dark bits, but this wasn’t a book that made me squirm. The pacing is great and the writing flows smoothly. This trilogy won’t change the way that you look at the world, but you’ll have a lot of fun reading it!
This book made me want to: draw comics.
Verdict: a light, fun read, perfect for vacation reading.
Since this is three books, it was hard for me to give it an accurate rating. So i tried to average it out as good as I possibly could based on my opinions of each book. I also rated it based on my opinion of the entire series.
The First book (The Summoning) got of to a quick start and pulled me into a mysterious world that I needed to know more about. I was very much into the characters, and I felt like the story really flowed nicely. I gave it 4 stars (really liked it).
The second book (The Awakening) Moved at a much slower pace, and even though it was still enjoyable, I was disappointed in it. I guess since in the first book characters were developed, I had expected relationships to become more developed in this one. Though, I noticed the author attempting to establish a triangle between the Heroine and her two protectors, in the end it fell short. The relationship developed between Simon and Chloe just didn't reach the proportions for me to think that she had a tough decision to make now that she had feelings for Derik... but maybe that was just me. I gave this book 3 stars (Liked it) due to the fact that the pace slowed significantly, and development of some characters seemed to be ignored.
The Third book (The Reckoning) was AMAZING! I couldn't put it down, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I REALLY fell in love with all the characters in this book, the most being Tori. She has just come a long way as a person and a friend to Chloe. Full circle change and I loved to read every second of it. This book had torture, revenge, chases, escapes, true love.. all the essential components to an amazing book. I gave this book 5 stars (it was AMAZING).
Overall rating on average: 4 stars. Overall rating for the series in my opinion: 5 stars cause the the story was just totally awesome!!
This book is amazing!! Its one of those books you cannot set down until you finish it and since there is two other book, which only makes you want to go out to a book store and buy both right after you finish it. Other people that have read this have compared it to Twilight and it is so not like Twilight. The whole series is about a group of kids who are "different". Chole who is the main character has an episode at her school. She sees a man, that no one else sees. She runs down a hallway and next thing she knows; she wakes up at a hospital. While at the hopsital she gets told she is being sent to a group home. Chole goes to the group home and notices, everyone seems normal. Although normal is far from what everyone at the house is. Everyone at the house has supernatural powers and the doctors that are claiming to help them are acctually out to get them. Chole, Derek, and Simon understand that the people that are out there to help them are accutally out to get them. They run away and try to understand who they are and how to control their powers. Kelley Armstrong is a dang good writer, every word on the page made me want to read more and more. Like I said I did not want to put the book down til I finished it.
If you are in the mood for a young adult supernatural thriller, this is great. I like young adult books of this genre because they usually don't have bad language and sex. I really enjoyed these books. I've read a few of the author's adult supernatural books and there were so many pages I had to skip over, because of things I didn't want to read, even though I like her writing style a lot, so I was excited when I saw that she wrote a young adult series. I hope she does more! I wanted to give it 3 1/2 stars, but couldn't.
This was a super quick read -- I made it through all three books in about four days. I have been reading so much drawn out fiction this year where very little happens over the span of a lot of pages that whenever I return to YA books I feel like the action is nonstop. I liked the characters and the interplay among them and thought having the female protagonist be a necromancer was a nice twist (a really disgusting superpower it turns out). I only wish the denouement was a little longer -- it ended so abruptly.
To check out what I thought for each of the individual books, please see my reviews on the specific ones. To sum up briefly what I thought of the series: It was wonderful. Fast-paced, suspenseful and filled with believable characters. I loved every minute of it and read it all way too fast. It was too good! Armstrong's style certainly keeps me entertained and I'm looking forward to reading more of her stuff. 5/5
I enjoyed this book. It was a nice light read, even if it was 800+ pages. I do feel like there definitely could be more in the series and maybe there already are but I'm not left with a ton of unanswered questions.
Chloe Saunders gets is a 15 year old girl in the midst of puberty (she just got her first period) and that's when things start happening to her. The next thing she knows she's in a group home with other troubled teens.
This was one of thoes series I had to read to entertain myself between publishing of other series. But after the first book was done I went straight to the second and then the third. This was a very different prospective on the world of supernatural than what I am used to but I really enjoyed the different view.
Started off good, but got better as you read more. You wouldn't be able to stop reading once you have started. Also, you wouldn't have a clue what was going to happen next. Has an amazing ending, but wish she wrote more.
I took the book out this summer from the local library, so than after a while I keep reading and bring the book with me to work and at home. One of my favorite books. Defiantly gonna re read it again.
This looks pretty cool. Inside, do they have the cover images of each separate book to indicate when the next book has begun? That would compel me to wait and buy this one.
