So it's probably obvious but it's not a good idea to take some 20yrs break between books in a series. Really not a good idea with this series, this picks right up after Flame and the Flower and I was lost for a good portion of the beginning before I could grasp and remember how F&F ended and what it was all about.
This would also work as a deterrent against anyone wanting longer epilogues or novellas about couples that have already gotten together. The beginning half is the main couple living in honeymoon bliss and I found it boring af.
Around the 40% mark, a murder mystery plot happens and our heroine thinks the hero did it and she goes off half-cocked and the rest is the heroine thinking through if her husband could really murder someone, with some connecting conspiracy danger left over from the heroine's life in England.
This was confusing (must read the first in the series and in a timely matter), boring, and Gone with the Wind racist and when I accidently turned three pages instead of one, I just kept on.
Not a hidden gem.

Sadly this book was such a disappointment. The story was slow and predictable. Also it felt like I'm missing parts of the book or background information. Like I started reading in the middle of the story.
The heroine was weak, whiny and childish. I can't understand why a strong hero like Jeff would ever fall for a woman like that.
I was really disappointed because I liked the other two books about the Birmingham men very much. I had high hopes for this one too, sadly it fell short.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. Just skip it and read some other by this author.

Una stagione ardente è il terzo libro della serie Birmingham.
Rispetto al precedente romanzo la narrazione retrocede di circa vent’anni, e ha come protagonisti Jeffrey (fratello di Brandon) e sua moglie Raelynn, una semi-sconosciuta che l’uomo ha sposato per sottrarla alle grinfie di un crudele zio.
Per i due novelli sposi la graduale conoscenza apre le porte alla nascita di una bruciante passione e di un tenero sentimento, che dovrà però resistere a prove ardue come, ad esempio, un’accusa di omicidio.
All’inizio il ritmo narrativo risulta un po’ lento, poi prende la giusta cadenza soprattutto con l’infittirsi di un mistero che mi ha molto incuriosita.
L’autrice ha scelto un “cattivo” ben mascherato all’interno del romanzo, non semplice da individuare, che con il suo agire svelerà man mano dei retroscena legati all’accusa di tradimento che ha portato alla rovina la famiglia di Raelynn.
Insomma, una serie di indizi e sotto-trame sono distribuite nella storia, finendo poi con l’intrecciarsi magistralmente e creare un unico filone narrativo; una sorta di puzzle che l’autrice ha saputo far combaciare ottimamente.
Magistrale rilievo al romanzo è dato anche dai personaggi: personalmente ero già affezionata a Jeffrey, al suo essere contemporaneamente forte e risoluto, ma anche dotato di grande spirito e allegria, e ho trovato nella sua controparte femminile una valida compagna.
Raelynn è, infatti, incantevolmente razionale, una donna arguta e ragionevole che non agisce unicamente in nome del sentimento, e non ha paura di mettere in discussione anche l’uomo di cui è innamorata di fronte a delle prove schiaccianti.
Per entrambi è stato semplice e immediato provare forte empatia grazie alla caratterizzazione peculiare che ha reso i protagonisti, con i loro pregi e difetti, molto veritieri.
Se a tutti questi ottimi presupposti aggiungiamo anche la scrittura minuziosa e particolare della Woodiwiss, direi che il libro ha tutte le carte in regola per essere considerato un ottimo romanzo.
Personalmente l’ho trovata una lettura piacevole e romantica avvalorata da questo strato di mistero. Un libro, che a differenza dei precedenti, giova anche di uno svecchiamento dello stile narrativo, essendo stato pubblicato molti anni dopo, elemento che si nota soprattutto dal fatto che non risulta appesantito da pagine non necessarie.
A mio parere, Una stagione ardente non è una di quelle storie da cui non si riesce a staccarsi, ma una lettura che va assaporata lentamente per essere apprezzata e compresa.
È un romanzo a cui dedicare il giusto tempo per coglierne ogni sfumatura e restarne inevitabilmente conquistati.
Sicuramente questo libro riconferma la Woodiwiss come regina indiscussa del genere!

This book started out very slowly. It dragged for the first one hundred pages or so. Hang in there, though. It does pick up.
Raelynn and Jeffrey get married without knowing each other. The first part of the book is the two of them falling in love. It does drag, but as I said, hang in there. It's worth the wait.
Jeff Birmingham is a wealthy landowner and business entrepreneur. He finds himself in an ugly situation when one of his servants crawls into bed with him in the middle of the night and declares that he is the father to her child (pre-Raelynn days). He didn't do anything with her in the sexual capacity and dismisses her after physically putting her out of his bedroom. Nell, the servant girl, is adamant that he is the father. Jeff is adamant about not being the father. Suddenly, Nell ends up dead in Jeff's stable and he is accused of murder.
This is where I quickly grew to dislike Raelynn. Rather than to stand by him and realize that he isn't capable of such a thing, no matter how angry he gets, she bolts. She didn't even give him a chance to explain. She didn't ask any questions. She was a whimpering little twit who was so caught up in her "woe-is-me" thing that he finally moved her off his plantation and into Charleston.
She got a job working for Farrell Ives, at Jeff's request, and took a room with Farrell's love interest, not knowing that Jeff was staying close by to make sure she was okay.
There is a fair amount of action in the book with a few adversaries who want Raelynn dead. Jeff wasn't going to let that happen and went to great lengths to protect her. She was not just his wife, but she was also pregnant with his child.
Overall, the book was good. It was typical Kathleen Woodiwiss, which is something I do love. I think she was a great author. My only hang up with the characters is that Jeff was significantly older than Raelynn, which is also typical of Ms. Woodiwiss.
The plot was solid, the characters were likeable (except Raelynn, sorry) and believable. The ending was sweet, but again, the age difference between Raelynn and Jeff, especially at this point, was a bit unsettling.

Ainsss me encanta este libro, la verdad. Y es que Jeff es un amor. Los diálogos entre Jeff y Raelynn muy buenos.

Una grande autrice per un grande boh!
Ho iniziato questo romanzo piena di curiosità, vista l’indiscussa fama dell’autrice, pur non avendo letto altre sue opere. Quindi parlo unicamente di questo libro senza conoscere le altre vicende né lo stile narrativo complessivo di questa famosissima scrittrice. Kathleen E. Woodiwiss è considerata, infatti, la regina indiscussa del genere Romance storico, in cui la letteratura storica e la storia d’amore si fondono.
Il romanzo – ambientato nella Carolina del Sud nel 1801 e in breve riassumibile come una romantica storia di amore fra un signorotto bello e ricco e una sfortunata fanciulla dal destino avverso – appare stucchevole e poco dinamico nonostante la trama abbia interessanti colpi di scena. La frettolosa e sommaria caratterizzazione dei personaggi e delle dinamiche, oltre che una sbrigativa descrizione dei luoghi, rende inoltre questo romanzo un grande punto interrogativo.
La carne al fuoco sarebbe davvero tanta ma sviluppata in così poche pagine da risultare insipida. Trattandosi, da quel che ho compreso, di un’appendice della più ampia saga dei Birminghan probabilmente parte del problema è qui, ma ciò non giustifica appieno quello che è il risultato finale, a mio avviso, deludente e incolore, dove l’agire dei personaggi li fa sembrare patetiche marionette che recitano un copione collaudato, ma ormai, un po’ stantio.
Devo inoltre dire a onor del vero che il romanzo nella versione kindle ha solo 109 pagine mentre ne vengono dichiarate 160, ignoro al momento le ragioni di questa discrepanza ma ritengo che una versione di poco più lunga difficilmente potrebbe stravolgere il mio giudizio.

Finalmente tradotto in italiano.
In realtà l'autrice aveva scritto questi cinque capitoli extra facenti parte di una raccolta a tema "matrimonio" insieme ad altre famose autrici di romance.
"Un bacio inatteso" infatti copre gli eventi che precedono "Una stagione ardente", romanzo della saga familiare dei Birmingham.
In questi capitoli l'autrice ci racconta del primo incontro tra Raelynn e Jeff Birmingham, del matrimonio ....
Anche in queste poche pagine ritroviamo lo straordinario talento dell'autrice nel creare storie affascinanti ed avventurose. Trasportando il lettore in epoche passate grazie alle sue descrizioni così chiare e particolareggiate da rendere la fantasia realtà. I suoi romanzi sembrano quasi sceneggiature, grazie ai quali chi legge ha quasi la sensazione di assistere con tutti i sensi ai fatti che vengono narrati.

This was just awful. I loved the Flame and the Flower, Shanna, and the Wolf and the Dove but this was just...ridiculous. The heroes spend the first hundred or so pages wanting to have sex with each other but thinking the other doesn't. Then one (I don't remember who) takes the brave step of initiating sex with the person they married.
Then they discover--crickey!--they both like it. And the next part is all about how perfect they are, how hot, and how good in bed they are and basically toasting their happiness. It was so SAPPY. I love me some sappy but this was just non stop, repetitive and ridiculous.
Add to that a villian who is so hee hee hee eviiil it was just dumb. No other words. Terrible. Skip and go enjoy something else by this author.

If I could give this 1/4 star I would. Just terrible. The repetitive nature of the first 400 pages of the book was hard to get through, If I had red the last 5 chapters, I would have had the whole story. Why at the very end does she bring up the dreams? I cannot understand how someone who wrote The Wolf and the Dove" can write a book this terrible, my dearie!

Jeff Birmingham, el conocido magnate naviero y reciente hombre casado se enfrenta a unas acusaciones que pueden poner su matrimonio con Raelyn Barret en peligro. Tendrá que demostrar su inocencia a una mujer que prácticamente no lo conoce y pueda pensar que todo haya sido un error.
Esta segunda novela de la serie “Birmingham” continúa con la historia de Jeff Birmingham y Raelyn Barret, para que la comprendáis mucho mejor os recomiendo que os leáis los relatos cortos “El beso” y “Después del beso”. Opino que lo ideal hubiese sido que lo incluyeran todo en un solo tomo, tendría más sentido, pero no ha sido el caso.
La novela comienza con los recién casados distanciados tras una serie de acusaciones, Raelyn se da cuenta de que se ha casado con un desconocido y eso lo sabe bien Jeff que intentará demostrar el tipo de hombre que es y permanecer junto a la mujer de la que se ha enamorado.
Dividiría la novela en dos partes, una primera bastante extensa y para mí la más pesada en la que prácticamente pasa muy poco, más bien es el día a día de la pareja en Charleston con las consabidas acusaciones de Nell, un alemán que acosa a Raelyn y un ���tío” al que únicamente le interesa su dinero, pero que todavía no se llegan a desarrollar. Es la historia de la joven Raelynn que es engañada por un hombre que se hace pasar por su tío y pretende venderla. Jeff Birmingham, un magnate naviero, se compadece y la compra antes que un mafioso alemán que la usaría de amante.
La madre de la joven había muerto en altamar por falta de alimento mientras el estafador tenía las monedas de oro que le habían dado para guardar.

En la que encuentran las botas embarradas en el dormitorio de Jeff incriminándolo.
El falso tío vio todo y como la chica había quedado viva, la remató para cobrarle al alemán por haber separado a Jeff de su esposa desconfiada que lo ve ensangrentado en el lugar del hecho y lo cree el asesino.
El asesino era el traidor de su padre que buscaba la prueba estaba en la cajita a la que le hizo una puesta con el cuchillo tratando de abrir el fondo. La chica lo había descubierto y la subo las caballerizas y la hizo.
Es la que sale clava en un intento de asesinato un alfiler al asesino y se le infecta la herida ya no corre tan rápido como siempre o sea porque se le hinchó todo y se le infectó y queda en coma.
La que ella termina siendo diseñadora de modas. Es la que la ayudante del diseñador de modas era una viuda de la que sospechaba que su hijo era de él pero no era cierto, y él se anima y terminando ayudándola a salir y se terminan casando.

Dopo la pausa estiva, ecco che ripartono tutte le rubriche lasciate in sospeso.
Per Questa volta leggo..., il tema scelto è FOGLIE, e come potete ben vedere sulla copertina di questo brevissimo romanzo, accanto a delle rose, a un ventaglio ci sono anche delle foglie.
Ora vi pongo una domanda: conoscete Kathleen Woodiwiss? O meglio conoscete i suoi romanzi? Ne avete mai letto uno?
Ho letto diversi romanzi di questa stupenda scrittrice venuta a mancare oramai da tempo e questo titolo è stato una vera scoperta.
Un bacio inatteso è una breve storia che si inserisce in una serie quella dei Birmingham, composta da quattro libri, compreso quest'ultimo.
Purtroppo non ho ancora letto la serie e sicuramente me ne pentirò, soprattutto perché i libri li ho tutti, vi ho detto che sono una fan della scrittrice?

Jeff Birmingham è un uomo che sa quello che vuole, ha scelto di non legarsi a nessuno, di non contrarre un matrimonio fittizio perché aspetta che il suo cuore palpiti solo per una donna. Sogna il matrimonio di suo fratello, un matrimonio d'amore e nonostante le maldicenze circa il suo rapporto con la cognata, lui l'adora e stravede per lei.
Ma come spesso accade, l'amore non si cerca, arriva e quando questo succede non possiamo farlo fuggire. Così l'incontro scontro con la giovane Raelynn è come un fulmine a ciel sereno e Jeff ne è subito attratto, tanto da legarla a sé per tutta la vita con un matrimonio che salverà la giovane ma anche lui...
Quello che accade all'interno del libro lo lascio a voi, questo perché purtroppo è molto breve e avrei preferito che ci fossero state un maggior numero di pagine come del resto molti dei romanzi dell'autrice ci hanno abituate.
La scrittura della Woodiwiss è accattivante, ne sono rimasta sempre affascinata, peccato che in questo romanzo tutto sembra essere un po' scontato, meno irruento, meno passatemi il termine "carnale". La storie di questa autrice hanno la capacità di travolgerti, qui però questo sentimento, questo turbinio di passioni che mettono in subbuglio anche i più fragili di cuore non l'ho riscontrato.
Sono molto curiosa di leggere però la serie, infatti, ho già messo i libri sul comodino, in modo tale da alternarli con altre letture!!!

I had trouble with the first few chapters of this book and finally gave up. I felt like it started in the middle of the story and kept having to go back and tell you what had happened before the book started. Made me wonder if the book was originally longer and Woodiwiss had to cut it back. Maybe the story would have worked itself out, but I just didn't feel like waiting around to see.
I was really disappointed since I liked the first two Birmingham books so much. I will seek out more by Woodiwiss, I just think that something went wrong in the editing process with A Season Beyond a Kiss.

Lovely book to end a lovely life in books... my all time favorite is ashes in the wind. I will truly miss a wonderful story writer. All my love to you Kathleen you will be missed.

Kathleen Woodiwiss es una de mis autoras preferidas y las razones son obvias: sus historias tienen alma, están escritas con mimo y poseen personalidad propia (algo que, lamentablemente, no se puede decir hoy en día de mucha de la RA que leemos). No disponemos de demasiadas obras de esta gran autora, únicamente cuenta con trece títulos, pero todas ellas, unas mejores que otras, son especiales, algunas inolvidables. Woodiwiss es una de las grandes reinas de la novela romántica y siempre recomiendo a todo el mundo que se acerque a sus historias, quizá no tan rápidas y fluidas como otras, pero, sin duda, merecedoras de ser leídas.
Raelynn ha contraído matrimonio con Jeff Birmingham, lo que le ha permitido huir de la desesperada situación en la que se encontraba. Ahora es una de las damas más respetadas de Charleston y tiene a su disposición todos los recursos que le hagan falta. Lamentablemente, su vida conyugal no marcha del todo bien, sobre su marido se cierne la sombra de la traición (¿ha sido cruel con la muchacha a la que parece haber dejado embarazada? ¿En qué clase de problemas está metido para que asalten su casa a medianoche?). Raelynn desconfía de él y la convivencia entre ellos es tensa aunque formal. Ambos tendrán que poner de su parte para que el matrimonio prospere, confiando en el otro para sortear todas las dificultades a las que tendrán que hacer frente.

It only gets the stars because I do like some of the characters, but it was petty boring and overly complicated at the same time. I've been going through KEW books recently since the audiobooks were released last year and this one will be my last for a long time because I'm burnt out. I only finished it since I had to pay for this one and I held on to hopes it would improve, but it was just, meh. I didn't hate it, but it was a bit all over the place. It feels like there is an entire section of the book missing from the beginning and it threw off so much of the book for me. Instead of writing what could've been quite the start to their story, there are a few details of the chaos that happened 2 weeks before the start of the book and that feeling of something missing lingers throughout the book. I imagine an editor said to cut down by at least a hundred pages, but unfortunately almost all of the ones cut were the beginning adventure that brought the main characters together in the first place.
My biggest issue with KEW novels is the lack of communication that causes the stories to go on for so darn long. I would think as I read that they should've been cut down a bit, but then here I am feeling a weird mix that it was too long, and yet there was a section missing...

Before I start my review, I just want to say that I had considered taking away a star, because Ms. Woodiwiss, for some reason, decided to precede this novel with a story, "The Kiss" (found in the book "Three Weddings and a Kiss") and then a novella, "Beyond the Kiss", which can be confusing for someone who's not aware of that (like me) when they start reading "A Season Beyond a Kiss". I felt like I was starting the book at Chapter four and wondered what happened to the first three. I had to online search to find the beginnings, all the while thinking it was all so silly; why not reissue this novel with the first parts made into first chapters and save people trouble?
That being said, I found this to be an entertaining story, as it was full of intrigue, mystery, murder, villains, and assorted melodrama, reminiscent of those Victorian dime novels that I love. However, I do have to add that, to people that aren't fond of them, or never read them, this book can seem full of nonsense, instead. It did get a bit convoluted, with all the chases, brawls, evil plans, murder attempts (some successful), as well as misunderstandings between the romantic leads, Jeff and Raelynn.
I tried to put myself in both their places. They had been married a short time (and almost immediately after they met), a chivalrous act of saving the damsel in distress, who was grateful, but also overwhelmed. No sooner are they starting to feel like a real couple, then Jeff's accused of getting a very young girl pregnant and refusing to own up to it. Raelynn wants to believe he's innocent, but since she's only known him so short a time, she can't help having doubts. Then, when she decides to trust him and they make a new start, she discovers him standing over a dead body with a bloody knife in his hand! That sure doesn't do much for his image as the ideal husband! Her answer is to do a dime novel scene, and flee the premises, literally running off into the night! This was really over the top, as she at first locked herself in her bedroom, and Jeff, after futile attempts to talk to her, agreed to leave her alone. It's understandable she'd be shook up after what she saw, and you can't blame her for wanting to get away, but the fact that she leaves without taking any provisions, not to mention a horse, just runs into the swampy woods alone, also knowing that she's pregnant, shows a recklessness that can only be explained as a form of PTSD, or else downright stupidity. Common sense should have told her to wait until she could clear her head and think straight. Then again, common sense is boring, while her trek into the woods alone, tired, hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, discovering her fav horse nearby, that same horse getting stuck in the mud, her futile attempt to come to the rescue, her own rescue by the man she loves and fears....well, you get the idea.
Although Raelynn's come to realize she loves Jeff, she can't forget what she saw, that she hasn't known him all that long, and that he hasn't said he loves her, so maybe it's only a protective instinct, along with sexual desire? (When they met she was all alone, just arrived from England, her parents are both dead, a scoundrel's claiming to be her uncle, another one - who's repulsive into the bargain - is determined she be his mistress, and she had nowhere to turn, so how could he help but be a white knight?)
Meanwhile, Jeff does love her, but thinks she's not ready to hear that, and maybe she feels only gratitude for all his help, combined with sexual desire. He's also hurt and a bit angry that she actually believes he might be capable of so horrible a crime, no matter how damning the evidence.
They separate for a while, but get back together when an attempt is made on both their lives, and Jeff suffers a concussion, while Raelynn nurses him back to health. This happened after a dinner date that made Raelynn very happy, as she had hinted to Jeff that she was feeling neglected by him. A real case of "be careful what you wish for"; Raelynn said she needed some time and space, then she feels hurt and gets a bit pouty when Jeff takes her at her word and stays away for a while. She sometimes acts like she's the only one with feelings, which can get annoying.
A nice sideline to the main story is the fashion business, that plays a part in things, and also introduces another couple with quite a romantic tale of their own.
A lot more happens, and what I like is the way the author puts other people into focus, not just R and J, so you get the perspective of some of their friends, Jeff's brother and sister-in-law (the famous couple from "The Flame and the Flower") and even the villains! It's so much better than a narrow POV.
Of course, some things are really far fetched, like a conversation Jeff and Raelynn have shortly after they reunite, while he's recuperating from his head injury. With killers on the loose, attempts on their life, and a murder charge hanging over Jeff's head, what does Raelynn have on her mind? The size of her husband's penis! She wants to know if he's more well endowed than the average man. (Since he carries around a ruler to check if other guys measure up.....only kidding!) He tells her that when he was a teenager and swam nude with friends, he couldn't help noticing he had a lot more to offer! I thought for sure he was then going to compare her breasts (which he was fond of fondling) to other women, but that would mean going by his previous experiences (of which there were many) and I don't think she'd have appreciated that.
Anyway, it's a fun read, if not very realistic, but how many novels are?

Capitolo precedente a “Una stagione ardente”, parte introduttiva alla vita del protagonista Jeffrey Birmingham che fornisce dettagli sulla sua conoscenza con la bella Raelynn. Era forse la parte mancante al secondo romanzo della saga dei Birmingham della Woodiwiss.
Una lettura veloce, che fa anche sorridere. I personaggi sono coerenti con la storia precedente e invogliano il lettore a voler sapere di più su di loro.

I read the other books in the series and I still felt lost in the beginning. It was like starting a book in the middle. Kathleen’s books are entirely too long. Sometimes it works but it didn’t here. I was bored. This is also the first book that felt dated. And I’ve read a lot of historical romance.
The FMC took too long to believe in the MMC innocence. He gave her no reason to doubt him considering he saved her from being sold.

I love most of Kathleen Woodiwiss's books, but this one was terrible. It was the first time I was rooting for the hero to just go find someone else. No woman who is this dense and this immature deserves to be the heroine of a book.
Stay away, if you love Kathleen, this was a huge disappointment.

Tanti colpi di scena. Con i romanzi della Woodiwiss non ci si annoia. Trovo inoltre che l'autrice abbia una predilezione verso i protagonisti maschili dal fascino indimenticabile. Le protagoniste infatti risultato spesso infantili, immature o capricciose ....

Oggi sono qui per parlarvi di un'altra opera firmata Sonzogno, l'ultima della saga dei Birmingham di cui vi ho parlato in questi giorni.
Ho sempre amato le opere di questa casa editrice e della Marsilio, sfornano meraviglie su meraviglie, ma capita purtroppo a volte di trovare qualcosa che non ti convince. Sarebbe anormale il contrario, no? Questo non vuol di certo dire che è tutto da scartare, anzi. Chi ha letto le mie recensioni sulle loro opere, sa che sinora ne ho amate tutte e tuttissime.
Questa premessa era necessaria e quindi ora andiamo nel clou della recensione di giornata.
Come sapete, il primo volume di questa serie non mi aveva convinto molto, seppur l'avessi trovato comunque piacevole; il volume 1.2 di mezzo l'ho adorato; il 2/3 mi è piaciuto moltissimo e questo volume conclusivo, ahimè, a parer mio è forse quello uscito peggio.
Come sempre andremo ad analizzare il tutto sia oggettivamente che soggettivamente ma ricordate che ogni parere su un'opera non è mai sacrosanto e sempre e solo un parere personale, per la maggior parte. Ad esempio a me sono piaciute tante opere che tutti hanno odiato e viceversa.
Allora di cosa parla questo volume conclusivo? Andiamo a scoprirlo in breve e senza eccessivi Spoiler.

Sì, lo so, lo so. Ne parleremo dopo).
Tra pro e contro, i due innamorati dovranno affrontare difficoltà portate da un'ombra del tutto determinata a separarli.
" Non dovresti baciarmi così in mancanza di intimità e di un letto nei paraggi. Ormai dovresti sapere che effetto mi fanno i tuoi baci. "
Mi piange il cuore fare questa recensione. A me non va mai bene fare recensioni quasi del tutto negative ma sapete che sono sempre sincera e per quanto sia soggettivo il mio parere, non posso non esprimermi onestamente per rispetto nei confronti sia delle mie collaborazioni che dei miei lettori.
La saga dei Birmingham aveva un grande potenziale, l'ho conosciuta con Un Bacio Inatteso e avevo grandissime aspettative ma leggendo i tre romanzi base mi sono ritrovata davanti una storia ripetitiva, sempre sulla stessa linea narrativa e spesso banale e piena di cliché.
Solo il secondo/terzo volume è stato in grado di convincermi di più, perché i protagonisti avevano molto più lo spessore che io amo, ma in questo ultimo c'è fretta in alcune cose, come ad esempio la conoscenza inesistente tra i due protagonisti, che mi lascia pensare che da parte dell'autrice non ci sia stato l'impegno che magari aveva messo nei primi e che comunque avevo notato e apprezzato nonostante il gusto personale.
Di certo i punti di forza sono lo stile narrativo, la poesia delle parole della scrittrice, l'attenzione ai dettagli dei luoghi in cui si muovono i personaggi, tanto da farti pensare di essere anche tu per mare e per le strade insieme a loro, e anche i caratteri dei personaggi sono coerenti all'epoca in cui si muovono. Quindi il mio 3 stelle è dato proprio come merito alla bravura dell'autrice che non si può mettere in discussione, ma di certo la bravura da sola non serve per fare una storia che ti convinca e coinvolga.
Di conseguenza non mi sento di sconsigliare il libro o la serie, ma come ho ripetuto in questi giorni, li consiglio a un pubblico con uno spirito più ingenuo e dolce, magari con poche pretese letterarie e che non sia troppo pignolo come me e prettamente amante del romance puro e totale di cui la Woodiwiss è Regina.
Per concludere: il mio voto: ⭐⭐⭐/5. a gusto personale.
Ho sempre amato le opere di questa casa editrice e della Marsilio, sfornano meraviglie su meraviglie, ma capita purtroppo a volte di trovare qualcosa che non ti convince. Sarebbe anormale il contrario, no? Questo non vuol di certo dire che è tutto da scartare, anzi. Chi ha letto le mie recensioni sulle loro opere, sa che sinora ne ho amate tutte e tuttissime.
Questa premessa era necessaria e quindi ora andiamo nel clou della recensione di giornata.
Come sapete, il primo volume di questa serie non mi aveva convinto molto, seppur l'avessi trovato comunque piacevole; il volume 1.2 di mezzo l'ho adorato; il 2/3 mi è piaciuto moltissimo e questo volume conclusivo, ahimè, a parer mio è forse quello uscito peggio.
Come sempre andremo ad analizzare il tutto sia oggettivamente che soggettivamente ma ricordate che ogni parere su un'opera non è mai sacrosanto e sempre e solo un parere personale, per la maggior parte. Ad esempio a me sono piaciute tante opere che tutti hanno odiato e viceversa.
Allora di cosa parla questo volume conclusivo? Andiamo a scoprirlo in breve e senza eccessivi Spoiler.
Jeff Birmingham, il nostro protagonista, è il fratello minore di Brandon - conosciuto ne Il Fiore e La Fiamma -. L'unico obiettivo per cui avevo preso questo romanzo dallo scatolone dell'usato gratuito era perché avevo bisogno di una lettura leggera, abbastanza insignificante da poter accompagnare la mia vita da pendolare e allo stesso tempo provare un genere che di solito snobbo, ossia i romance. Mio Dio, l'avessi lasciato in quello scatolone!
Non si tratta semplicemente di una storia insignificante, ma di una storia inutile, che non ti lascia niente. Come in una delle peggiori fan-fiction basate sulle teorie lombrosiane, i protagonisti buoni sono tutti belli, atletici, muscolosi, fedelissimi e protettivi, amanti e padri perfetti pur essendo a cavallo dell'Ottocento; le protagoniste anch'esse bellissime, snelle, svenevoli, felicemente succubi della passione della loro controparte maschile, desiderose di essere madri amorevoli vestite bene con graziosi cappellini. E i cattivi? Ovviamente brutti, grassi, sfregiati in volto, con impropapili accenti teteshi, che alla prima minaccia del protagonista se la danno a gambe levate.
Il rapporto tra Jeff e Raelynn si basa unicamente sul loro struggersi e crogiolarsi d'amore, ma con continui dubbi sul sentimento dell'uno e dell'altra. Raelynn in particolare è assolutamente inutile, l'unica sua forza motrice nella storia è l'essere bellissima, affascinante e deliziosa al punto da attirare le attenzioni di ogni uomo che incontra. L'autrice ci prova a darle un talento nel disegno che però è tratteggiato banalmente a margine. È più importante continuare a rimarcare quanto Jeff sia alto, statuario, bellissimo e muscoloso.
Edit to add: ho scusato gli elementi anacronistici, i personaggi antiquati, i palesi errori storici perché ero convinta fosse stato scritto negli anni Trenta. No, nel 2000. NEL DUEMILA. Ma si può?!

Sono rimasta molto delusa dalle indicazioni date su questa serie di romanzi, che hanno per protagonista la famiglia Birmingham. Né all’interno di questo libro né su Internet era specificato che prima di questo romanzo ce ne fosse un altro. Mi sono trovata proiettata in una storia in medias res senza capire nulla di quanto stava accadendo. Si menzionavano fatti e personaggi che non conoscevo. Così sarò più chiara io, dato che non lo è nessuno. I romanzi della famiglia Birmingham, in ordine cronologico (non di uscita) sono: Il fiore e la fiamma (che parla di Brandon Birmingham e Heather), Un bacio inatteso (che parla di Jeff e Raelynn), Una stagione ardente (che parla sempre di Jeff e Raelynn e inizia un paio di settimane dopo la fine del precedente), Cuori in tempesta (che parla del figlio di Brandon e Heather). Purtroppo non sono riuscita a godermi la lettura di questo libro, dati i pezzi mancanti e i continui riferimenti al libro precedente. La trama è del tutto fuorviante, perché non è altro che il riassunto di Un bacio inatteso. Non accade nulla di quanto annunciato dalla sinossi. Jeff e Raelynn sono sposati e finalmente consumano il matrimonio (dopo aver risolto problemi di fiducia nati nel libro precedente). Metà del romanzo parla di loro felici e innamorati che fanno sesso in ogni momento. Poi finalmente accade qualcosa, Jeff viene accusato e Raelynn perde fiducia in lui (una fiducia che, brividi e sospiri a parte, non deve esserci mai stata) e il loro matrimonio entra in crisi. La parte gialla del romanzo era del tutto prevedibile, senza colpi di scena. L’ho trovato parecchio noioso, niente a che vedere con Il fiore e la fiamma.

Historia de Jeff (Hermano de Brandon) y Raelynn, a quienes ya conocíamos por las historias cortas.
No me engancho tanto, en algunas ocasiones ella me desespero (aunque su comportamiento era entendible). En las historias cortas nos contaron acerca de su matrimonio apresurado con Jeff. Él está determinado a conquistar a su esposa pese a los diferentes obstáculos presentados: 1. Se conocen relativamente hace poco, 2. Ella no quiere consumar el matrimonio aun, y 3. Una empleada de Jeff está embarazada de un presunto hijo de Jeff. *Para terminar, esta es asesinada dejando a su hijo huérfano. Cayendo todas las sospechas en Jeff.
Pese a todos estos argumentos que tenía Raelynn, si me sentí un poco desilusionada por su falta de confianza, aunque todas los “hechos” mostraran lo contrario. Creo que sumaba puntos haberla salvado y ayudado antes (historias cortas).
Fue un romance bonito pero un poco plano para mi gusto, como viene siendo habitual en la autora es una historia larga y con algo de relleno. *Asunto de Lord y padre de Raelynn.
Un final de cuento y de príncipe azul que me desencanto un poco. Bonito pero no memorable.

Did I missed something?
Feel like reading book with a missing chapters (a very important one too)
My honest review is, if I rate only on this book alone it would actually be 3 to 3.5. At the beginning of the book I felt at a complete lost, so much that it felt like I missing entire book before this one.
Yes, there is a recap from past events.
Yes, there is a growth of relationship between H/h
But where’s the fun in reading HRom if you couldn’t witness the beginning of their love. With that annoyances I recognized that I must missed out something really important which is true. I discovered there were 2 novella of Jeff & Raelynn which is a part of omnibus (The Kiss: Three Weddings and a Kiss and Beyond the Kiss: Married by Midnight)
By the time I notice these 2 novellas I already finish >50% of the book. 😞 in which if I decide to read it I have the purchase almost $18 for less than 170 pages. So I decided not too.
From what I learned from recap of previous event between Jeff & Raelynn plus plots is this book I could give this book a solid 5 ⭐️ but since I didn’t I give it a 4 ⭐️
I would recommend publisher or manager of Kathleen books to combines Jeff & Raelynn stories. Or at the very least gives us readers a warning or notices if there is a connecting novel/las.

I almost gave up reading this book. It dragged for about 100 pages & I couldn't figure out the plot. However, it started reading easier & the plot picked up. Jeffrey Birmingham, younger brother of Brandon, marries young Raelynn Barrett. Though they are married, Raelynn is reluctant to share her be with Jeff. When she does finally relent and give in to the desires she shares with Jeff, their marital bliss is cut short with the discovery of a brutal crime, the murder of Nell, young girl who claims Jeff is the father of her baby,on the grounds of their plantation, with Jeff named the chief suspect. Unsure of herself and the man she married, Raelynn must confront both her feelings and the circumstances surrounding the crime and determine whether she stands with or against her husband.
The story goes forward as Jeff & Raelynn try to keep her out of the hands of Gustav fridrich, the German who wants her for his own.
I would have liked to see more of Brandon, Heather & Abegail Clark. They would have enlivened this book a bit.
