I’m playing a TCG right now, Disney’s Lorcana, and it’s funny how YuGiOh reads in the light of playing a card game. It’s a recommended experience. I had YuGiOh cards but never really dove in. One of my best friends from childhood was my playing partner and we skewed all the rules for various things.

Anywho, this volume is pretty sweet. Yami Bakura’s rad for going out in his own way. Gotta respect it.

Favorite card: Earl of Demise (probably because I owned it xD)

Yu-Gi-Oh’s continue dipping its toes in horror tropes to good effect, though this volume lacks an emotional punch

The end of the Yugi/Bakura fight ends in an emotional chess game, and Joey has some nice moments proving his worth as a duelist to his peers. The villains this time around are both engaging and compelling, and their plans are actually good for once.

This volume continues the hot streak this series has been on.

One-Turn Kill is the 17th volume in the Duelist series of Yu-Gi-Oh. Continuing the semi-finals of the Battle City arc. First, Yugi finishes off his duel against Yami Bakura. There is some emotional weight to this storyline, as much as there can be in a manga series like this. I enjoyed that dynamic. The "Occult Combo" Bakura uses is also interesting. The story then shifts into Jonouchi's duel against "Marik" who is Rishid in disguise. He has a trap deck with an Egyptian theme which is fitting. One would think Jinzo, Jonouchi's card which destroys all traps, would make this an easy duel but there is a lot of strategy at play. Takahashi has a lot of fun with the art this time around and you can tell. Overall this is a great entry into this storyline. 4.5 stars.

Yugi's duel against Bakura was crazy. He was turned back into himself but the spirit of the millennium ring didn't want his vessel to die so he took over the body again when Yugi attacked with his God card.

Joey's duel against "Marik" is going pretty interesting, he thought he had the upper hand with having a bunch of monsters vs. a bunch of traps but that didn't work out very well. The duel is definitely crazy, it is very back and forth and Joey can loss at any minute he only has 50LP.

The ending of the volume with Marik's back story was kinda interesting tho.

decent nail biter

Surprisingly the duels are always solid nail biters. I like Yugi’s duel against Bakura. Really makes you think although there seems to be no real consequences for losing a duel even though we keep getting elaborate death traps.

I'm curious what will happen next because Marik is not playing as himself.

¿Cómo pudieron hacer esto? Para el final de este tomo era un mar de lágrimas... no sólo por Marik sino también por Rishid. No tengo palabras.

A ouija board of doom made for a far more interesting duel than the dozens of previous ones.

I find it interesting that Bakura has an occult deck. This is obviously the influence of Yami Bakura; however, Bakura himself seems thrilled by his deck. Yugi manages to
Then This duel so far has just been annoying.
I liked Rishid’s flashback. From that I worked out that Rishid is 25 years old, Ishizu is 20 and Marik is 16. That places me closest to Ishizu’s age, yay. The flashback actually showed Marik’s father carving the tomb keeper’s secret into Marik’s back with a flame heated knife. It also showed the blood pouring from Rishid’s face where he created his own scar (this is probably one of the reasons for the return of the ‘including scenes to startling for TV!’ comment on the back of the book which was absent for the volumes 9-12). Marik was terrified of the rite of the tomb guardians and came out asking Rishid who he should hate for what was done to him.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the volumes in this series, but unfortunately the library does not have them so I will have to find them elsewhere.

And the semi-finals continue! Yugi calls upon Slifer to end Bakura, but the attack would kill him. Evil!Bakura decides to protect his host so sacrifices himself in the end. Next up is Jonouchi vs. "Marik". Of course, we know he's actually Rishid. And Rishid's deck is nothing but traps! His strategy is to call upon the fake Ra card to further convince everyone he is Marik. The volume ends with a flashback on how Rishid and Marik came to be "friends", and offers more of a backstory on Marik. It was a really graphic tale of the God Cards secrets being carved into Marik's back.
This volume was really intense and full of drama. I liked the insight into Marik and felt like fleshing out both Marik and Rishid was ultimately necessary. Jonouchi truly shows how far he's come as a duelist as he figures out a strategy to beat Rishid.
