Vol 3 shows the strengths and lapses of the uncredited writer of this strip. He seldom introduces a gratuitous menace at the end of a Sunday page to create fake suspense for next week, but often creates that suspense with a new plot point. On the other hand, the overall story structure becomes repetitive. If Tarzan meets a new group of people, someone in power will take a dislike to him and try to have him killed. If he meets a woman, he will need to protect her from danger. This has just begun to grow tiresome. Will vol 4 be better? Hal Foster’s art is still superb, and that helps a lot. Bill Blackbeard did not write this introduction, so that too is worth reading.
