Bobby Michaels lives in Fort Lauderdale with hundreds – nay! thousands – of gorgeous, muscular men (most of them Marines) running around in his mind. Some are memories of sexual encounters, some are the characters from his many Nifty stories and Loose Id novels and some are characters from novels waiting to be written. So, though he lives alone, he is never lonely.
Bobby has been many things in his life. An actor, director, nightclub singer, professional female impersonator, a monk and, for twenty nine years, a social worker and grant administrator for local government. His government career ended in 2007 when a stroke caused the loss of the use of his left arm so that now all his writing is done by dictation through a voice recognition program called Dragonspeak.
But through it all Bobby has been first and foremost a writer, beginning his career writing stories for trashy romance magazines in the 1960s along with stories and poetry through the rest of his life. From the time he was five years old, Bobby has always dreamed of actually holding in his hands a book with his name on it as the author.
An avid reader, Bobby’s Kindle has hundreds of books in it. Most of them are male/male romances because he loves reading them almost more than he likes writing them.
This is a pretty typical romance, except with a few added elements that Bobby Michaels is famous for — namely the sex. For those of you who have never read a book by him, the sex tends to be very raunchy, with lots of smells, rimming, sniffing, licking. He likes to get pretty dirty with his characters. I was used to this and expecting it, and I was therefore surprised that the sex in here was quite a bit tamer. The sex is still incredibly hot, but its much more sweet and loving (though there are a few times…). Also, this story deals with a very serious topic, that of HIV. Because his prose is very different (sometimes even stilted and instructional about specific topics) I didn’t expect this story to be angsty at all, though the topic might lead you to believe it would. With a lot of authors, it would. Somehow, though, David and Josh find ways to endure this with humor and grace, which I suspect is due in part to the fact that Bobby Michaels has himself come out as HIV+. I can’t speak as a woman, but as a gay man I can tell you that even thinking about this topic terrifies me. Seeing it here, in a different light, made me very happy. I know that its not real life, that a werewolf could take away this crushing disease from those who have it, but it makes me wish it was. It makes it a bit more bearable to think that there is something to be done other than fight a long fight with uncertainty. That is the epitome of fantasy for me — that for an hour or two or three, I can be taken outside of my mind and body and visit a place that might be better, or even just a little different than mine...
I can frankly say that Bobby Michaels is becoming one of my favourite writers in the M/M genre.
Second Time Around is his first paranormal romance but you can still find some of his caracterist touches in it: the young lovers, the difficult outing for one or for both of them, the Marine Corps... but somewhat this novel is more lighthearted, and it is strange cause it deals with a delicate matter like HIV.
David is coming back home after ten years to heal his wounds: his ten years lover has cheated on him and he has not thought two times and has dumped him immediately. But now he is back in the town where he met his real first love, his childhooh friend Josh, his straight as an arrow friend and so his impossible love. Fortunately Josh doen't live anymore there and David can settled himself, only to discover that Josh is back home himself and he is in love with David, now as ten year before. Everything perfect, but David discovers that his ex lover has passed him the HIV and that Josh is a werewolf and biting him he can heal David from the virus and...
Josh is not the "classical" alpha male: he is gentle and caring, sometimes childish. He can cry and he is a lot more than normal enthusiastic during lovemaking, like a child with a new toy. And David is cute, so shy but also so proud, he is not so open to love like Josh is, he need reassurance. I like the relationship between the two, and like very much the aftersex moment, when they talk and play: maybe only a couple who know each other so long can be like this.
Second Time Around is a smooth novel, you read it in a breath and close the last page with a peaceful feeling: it is all, simple and pure love.
The 1st 40 pages were slow going. Then everything happened too fast. I would have loved it if David and Josh took the time to get to know each other after being out of touch for 10 odd years. The paranormal element was lacking and seemed to be used as an easy cure-all for a serious disease. I'm all for HEA's, but not unrealistically so. Everything was too easy. The right words were spoken at the right time every time and it kind of spoiled it for me.
A nice, sweet story about two childhood friends, David and Josh, who love each other but didn't tell the other boy. So, they try to get over of each other instead. They live in a small island community off Washington State. To get over Josh, David went to San Francisco. To get over Josh, David joined the marine. David got into a relationship with Vince, which last for 10 years, until Vince started to cheat on him. Devastated, David went back to his hometown. Little did he know, Josh had moved back too. Their first meeting after more than 10 years, however, didn't go well. Good thing they realized that they loved each other.
Things didn't go smoothly, however. When one day David received a call from Vince, that he might have been HIV+, David didn't know what to do. Until Josh told him his secret.
I liked reading this story. A combination of several plots that I love: childhood friends turn lovers, shifter, family, and so on. The HIV treatment is quite interesting.
This was a 3.5* read for me actually. This was an interesting twist to the MM love story with the addition of
There was good character development and nice supporting characters. It was a quick and easy read with some steamy love scenes too.
A personal peeve for me was that they referenced their ex partners or their friends partners as lovers, even when talking about teenage boys in a relationship. I found it odd that they didn't use the word partner or boyfriend. It was always lover, even when talking about an ex who was a jerk and cheater. The over utilization of the word lover bothered me enough it kept me from giving this a 4 star.
The story has its moments that are raw and emotional (). Brian's character has an amusing tone of voice and is fun to be in his head.
But in general, the story felt artificial, the characters shallow... the relationship rushed... despite the topics addressed the mood light and fluffy... the plot... oh boy, the plot... ... O.O
It was a light and easy read, but I don't think I'll be grabbing the next one in the series.
The main character encourages underage kids to meet at his house to have a 'safe place' to meet. Would he have suggested this if the couple was straight rather than gay, I wonder. What would the boys' parents think of this? And why would an almost 30 year old man invite boys to his house. It was all a little creepy to me. Also, there was an instance of heterophobia (where the main character ASSumes that the straight doctor would be homophobic as regards his relationship with his male partner). And the fact that he made digs at women. Sexist much?
This book rubbed me up the wrong way, in all. I felt I was reading a book written by a 12 year old boy. Not giving up on Mr Michael's writing, since I still have several left to read, but I will be having another lengthy wait before I read another.
RIP Mr. Bobby Michaels-- your feel good inspiring stories will be missed!
I loved this book. This brings up the harsh reality of how cheating partners who do not use protection harm their unsuspecting and devoted spouse. It is of course lightened by the fact that David's Josh is a werewolf and would be able not only to cure him but extend his life and give him some 'powers' as well.
Although it breaks my heart that the sequel implied to this one will never be as Bobby Michael's passed away October 30 2011. You and your stories will be missed Mr. Bobby Michaels.
This books was one of my favorites....I read this lone times ago. Nice and Sweet story between two childhood friends. Josh and David The story run very fast, I like them to take time after 10 years of being out of touch. The book also talk about the difficult outing and HIV. I really want to recommend this book to you.
Loved this book: a werewolf tale with a difference in that it isn;t all about the full moon and changing urges. The fact that one of the characters is a werewolf does play a role, but not in the usual way. I really liked that!
It was okay. It didn't suck, but neither was it breathtakingly amazing. The dialogue btw the two main characters seemed staged at times, and the story a bit rushed, but still, it was a passable little story.
This was a pretty typical and common plot line. I could "see" where the story was going and how it would flow. Still it was a cute story and fun to read. Though not overly imaginative, it wasn't bad.
It was a good read. But up to the point, he was bitten and changed. And even up til then, the style of writing is sometims wierd. Like a child writing about his summer trip. Plus the complete explanation given to every single person... that did not sit well with me.
While the character and world building at the beginning was interesting, the way everything clicked together so perfectly after the two protagonists reunited made me lost interest in story.
Despite the fact that after 10 LONG years of not seing each other that Josh and David get together, from friends to lovers, within 24 hrs seems way to fast to me, I really enjoyed reading this
