He was hired to protect her.

Samantha
Someone doesn’t like what I write. That’s okay, erotic romance isn’t for everyone, but I like it and it pays the bills. First, there were private messages on social media, followed by emails—both full of vitriol and venom. Coming home after a day out in London, I knew someone had been in my home. I got on the first flight out of London and landed in Chicago.

Kingston
A mercenary with a dark history. I thought I’d never see the light of day again until Robert Fitzwallace walked through the door and dragged me out. After two years of healing, Fitz recruited me to head up the operations for the new Cerberus Group in Chicago. Like our counterpart in London, headquarters are located over a lifestyle club—the Windy City’s newest and best…Club Southside.

After pacing in front of the club, beautiful, curvy Samantha breezed into Cerberus looking for protection. I accept her as a Cerberus client even though I knew I would not be able to resist her. It doesn’t take long before I give in to my need, her need, and take us to the edge of an all-consuming desire.

When danger rises from the shadows costing Cerberus one of its own, I’ll risk everything to keep her safe.
No matter the cost.

Welcome to Club Southside. Cerberus has opened an office in Chicago over the Club. The team takes on jobs no one else wants. They handle everything from protection, covert rescue operations, and cybercrime to reconnaissance and more. These men are driven and deadly, willing to do what is needed to complete their missions and to protect the women they love.

A fast-paced romantic suspense series of interconnected standalone books that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

This was my first book by Delta James, and it did not disappoint! Samantha was running from a stalker and ended up getting help from a group of men that don't mind getting their hands dirty. King sees Samantha show up at his club's front door, and he knows there is something about her. King's Dom side is eager to meet Samantha's submissive side. The D/s relationship between these two were hot 🔥 I loved the push and pull especially when King was determined to keep Samantha safe. A little bit of action was thrown in, and Samantha's stalker was brought to justice. And Samantha and King got their happily ever after ❤️

DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR

The story is the first in the new Club of Southside series and is a spinoff from some of the other books that will include several main characters from them that revolved around the Baker Street BDSM club. The Southside club is an American version of Baker Street in London and even includes a Cerberus office. The office will be under Adam Wheldon (Ice Dog: A Mercenary Masters) who is away, and Kingston ‘King’ Coltraine.

The story begins in London with erotic romance writer and gamer, Samantha Butler, concerned that she has a stalker. What started out as small bits and pieces of social media spurs, then emails have escalated. Her sixth sense knows that this isn’t something to just ignore. Taking it to the police, had them accusing her of a publicity stunt to gain attention. When she goes to her cottage, she knows something is definitely wrong—even though nothing appears out of place—it can’t be ignored. Grabbing a few items, along with her laptop, phone, and passport, she heads to Heathrow and flies to the United States, and lands in Chicago. Even at that, she still believes someone is trailing her. Dropping her bag at a locker in Union Station, she will then go to Southside to Cerberus. Will they think the same as the police, that she is making this up?

The story’s plot is a fascinating mystery, and suspense, including life and death danger, with romance along the way. King questions Samantha as to why she didn’t go to Baker Street in London to their Cerberus office—but she really is unsure who to trust. The one thing that happens, is that King believes her, he involves Fitz who agrees he needs to take the case, protect her, and together, they will do what they can to find out who, what, and why. Because Samantha is a member of Baker Street, that will give King access to her information. For a man who has only scened with women, never a relationship or collaring a sub, Samantha brings out something different in him—he decides she is his—at least for now, but he wants more—forever.

“I can’t figure out which frightens me more—the thought of someone wanting to kill her, or my finding that elusive part of my soul.”

“Samantha might be a romance novelist, but in some ways, she wasn’t a romantic. She didn’t really believe in true love or fated mates, but meeting Kingston Coltraine had changed everything. Everything. She knew in her soul nothing would ever be the same again. In some ways that scared her as much—if not more—than whoever it was that was stalking her.”

King: You know, for a romance writer, you’re not a big believer in happily ever after.
Samantha: Why?
King: Because I do believe in happily ever after, and I do believe we have something special. What do you think?
Samantha: I think you might be as crazy as my stalker, but I also think I like your crazy a whole lot better.

The story is a well-written, mystery romantic suspense tale that has a great cast of characters, and plenty of interactions, with a sizzling chemistry of dominance, submission, and passion between King and Samantha. I liked the secondary characters, and think we’ll be seeing stories about them within this series. I do hope Dillion will be one—he proved to be an asset to the case.

This is a well written book with strong characters in Kingston and Samantha. He's a Dom and she's a Sub. They have a smokin hot chemistry. The author does a great job pulling you into their story with the stalker as well as the steamy romance. It moves fluidly and is a terrific read.

I wonder how often this happens to authors and I really hope it's not a common occurrence.

Samantha is certain someone is stalking her and when the London police don't take her seriously, and she thinks someone broke into her house, she flees to Chicago and Cerberus. And Kingston is immediately drawn to her and wants not only to help her but also to make Samantha his sub. So when one of the employees of Cerberus is murdered, they take it more seriously and start working with the Chicago PD.

Who are less than helpful. To the point where they just brush it off and a random act. And while waiting, Kings and Samantha get closer and see this relationship is for them. So when the culprit comes forward, will Cerberus be able to save Samantha?

Kingston and Samantha get their happy ending in this stand-alone book in a series.

How someone could blame an author for how their spouse acts and then select just one author to go after when there are many who write about alternative lifestyles? I do love how both Kings and Samantha came into the relationship a bit jaded and helped each other believe in love again. I would love to see both Seth and Royce, the other men in the office, get their happy endings now too.

This was my first Delta James book. It was ok. There are a ton of fabulous reviews for this story. Maybe I missed some things.

Cons: There's a lot of repetition. For example, the first third of the book is consumed with the potential victim saying over and over that she doesn't need protection. This is after she took a last-minute flight from London to Chicago in search of this security agency to help her with a stalker. This went on for almost 20 pages. I got the idea was to ratchet up the tension between her and the male lead. That could be accomplished more effectively instead of repeating essentially the same dialogue over and over.

After the murder of a minor secondary character, the leads both express repeated guilt over that death. Understandable the first 10 or so times. That it continued to come up way beyond that didn't make much sense.

The pacing of this was off. The story dragged until near the end. And what do you know, the "bad guy" was a judgmental psychopath whose motive wasn't entirely plausible for the amount of murder and mayhem that occurred, as well as the "stalking" that occurred from London to Chicago.

Also, in both cities where the story takes place, the police are endlessly portrayed as stupid, lazy, misogynist, and sexually judgmental to an extreme degree. That made them 2 dimensional villains just this side of mustache twirlers. This type of villain is boring to me.

While I got a good picture of the female lead, I couldn't get a real idea about the male lead. It was like the effort to make him appear uber dominant made it impossible for the author to provide him with real emotions. He seemed hollow, like a charactature of a Dom.

Lastly, the ending was super abrupt. It also made the highly touted skills of these security people look pretty amateur. All these security and high-tech shenanigans, and yet the bad guy just waltzed right in to nab the female lead? Huh?

Maybe I need to suspend my disbelief more, because I didn't buy this romance. For all the talk about the D/s world, there was very little of it. What there was seemed quite stylized, not as hot as expected. I also didn't sense a romance between them.

This author has written a lot of books. Maybe I need to start with something else to better experience her stories.

Samantha had gone to Cerberus for help even though she doubted herself and her sanity
Samantha would never have believed that she would have felt this way, she is sure that she is being followed and also that when she had returned home, she had the distinct feeling that someone had been in her home, her home felt invaded but she could not prove anything to the police.

When she first went to the police station the officer behind the desk had listened to her reasoning and then had implied that he thought she had been making everything up in an effort to improve her book sales. She knew there was nothing for it but to go to the new club opened in Chicago and ask to speak with someone from the Cerberus Group even though she was trying to talk herself out of going into the building but fear won her over.

Kinston had watched the young woman walking back and forward outside the building and the facial recognition had shown it was Samantha a member at the London club, when she finally plucked up the courage and walked inside, he had listened to her reason for being there and after looking through the evidence it was obvious that she had good reason to be frightened.

As he started to look into her case and investigated the possible break in to her home as well as the messages that she had been receiving it soon became apparent that Kingston is doing more that simply helping her as her Dom while she is staying at the Chicago club, as they spend time together it becomes apparent they are having some intense BDSM sessions in the club and found that they seemed to be helping each other.

I guarantee that as I do not want to spoil the read for others by giving away too much on the plot I hope that you will enjoy the read as much as me and once you start will not be able to put the book down until you reach the end, it will definitely be a one read sitting.

I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read.

This was a wonderfully written novel. It was the first in the series that I have read, but I will be going back and catching up on missed books soon - especially Fitz's! There was nonstop action - of one sort or another - from beginning to end, asJames just has a way of securely grabbing your attention and keeping you glued to the pages until you get to the very end.

Kingston...aka...King or Scoundrel. OMG… what is there to say about the man beyond YUM!! He went through literal he!! and came out the other side intact. Yeah, it took some recoup time, but he's back on his feet, and the prowl. He is a pure Alpha - with all that entales. Make no mistake, he is bosy and controlling, but intentions are for safety and overall wellbeing not just for the "kicks" of being in control. He also has a softer side. That concerned, guilt-ridden, emotional, more humble King that knows his vulnerabilities can be used against him, and others, so he tries to keep them as close to the vest as possible.

When he sees Samantha outside the club/office he not only notices, but begins tracking her actions. By the time he encounters her inside, his Dom side takes charge of their exchange - despite her initial protests. Samantha is an independent author of erotic books who's picked up a stalker. With escalating threats to her safety, and the London police blowing it off as a publicity stunt, she fled to Chicago. She's familiar at Baker Street (the club over which Cerberus was located in London), and to Fitz. Samantha can be described as outspoken, strong-willed, intelligent, hard-working, attractive, emotional, caring, loving, empathetic, but also blatantly bratty and defiant at times. She is definately a nice pairing for confident, no-nonsense King.

The story takes you through a series of escalating and threatening emails. Identifying not only what happens, but the team's response and plan of action. You will need to read for yourself to find out what this stalker's so upset about, what they're planning, and how the team plans to intercede. Then… will all go according to plan? Cross your fingers y'all! 🤞

This was a romantic suspense including BDSM elements.

I can't say enough times how much I love this author's books. I am truly thankful she is so prolific! The interaction between the bratty/snarky heroine and uber alpha broken hero is amazing. Highly recommend!

Samantha Butler is a steamy romance novelist and submissive who thinks she is being stalked. After speaking to the police, having her concerns dismissed and told her situation sounded like a publicity stunt she flees to Chicago hoping to get distance from her stalker.

Kingston Coltraine is a mercenary and Dom often referred to as the Scoundrel. Several years prior he was tortured and rescued by his friends/fellow mercenaries in the Cerberus group. He recovered physically but has been working on getting his life back by scening with the subs at the Baker Street BDSM club. He is asked to head up the new affiliate lifestyle club in Chicago called Club Southside.

They meet when Samantha goes to the new club wanting to talk to the Cerberus group about her situation. After agreeing to take her case King sends Jen, their club receptionist, to Union Station to pick up Samantha's belongings from a locker. On the way back to the club Jen is shot and unalived. King and company think Jen's death is connected to Samantha's stalker so he puts her under their protection and has her stay on the third floor of the club. Samantha and King begin a D/s relationship for the length of the case even though he wants her permanently. The local police don't think the two issues are related and only investigate Jen's murder. While conducting their own investigation King and Samantha fall in love and he gives her his collar. At the opening of the club they use Samantha as bait to catch the stalker, catch the bad guy and get engaged for their HEA.

For me, a 2-star rating means that the book was ok, but it didn't have anything that made it stand out or made me unable to put it down. I give this book 2.5 stars mainly because it didn't grab me in any way, and I didn't connect with the characters or the storyline, but the system doesn't allow for half-stars. The book is shorter than I usually read, which might also be part of the problem.

The story is a suspense romance with a stalker situation where the damsel in distress takes refuge within a lifestyle club (or a BDSM club for simplicity) that doubles as a security firm (or most of the men work both places, and the same people own both businesses). They agree to help her, and while she is there, she meets Kingston, a man she is instantly attracted to, and it is mutual. He happens to be a Dom, which is perfect since she is a submissive. Samantha is also an erotic romance writer, which is why she's being stalked. They engage in a Dom/sub relationship while trying to solve the case.

Usually, in suspense novels, the reader can figure out who did it because of clues or clever thinking before the end, but that is not the case here (or maybe it is just me). There is a pretty detailed explanation at the end when the stalker is revealed and caught, but before this, the person is barely mentioned in the story, and it feels as if the bad guy was taken out of thin air. Also, most of the legwork in the investigation is done remotely by people somewhere else, making the romance part of the story the main focus.

Both main characters have insecurities and issues mentioned throughout the story, and working on them could have been part of character development, but this is not done, in my opinion. It is fun that Samantha writes erotic novels, and Kingston has the proper Alpha feel, but the character feels flat. The bickering and meddling from the sidekicks are, at points, more interesting than the connection between Samantha and King. The relationship is the usual unrealistic insta-love but with an enticing dose of Dom/sub action. The author writes good sexual scenes and shows how the D/s relationship works outside the bedroom, but for some reason, the chemistry between the characters lacks believability.

It is evident that the author has done good research on this type of lifestyle or has some personal feelings regarding the subject. The way it is repetitively called "lifestyle" and "lifestyle club" rather than kink/fetish/BDSM or whatever else people would call it might be more politically correct, but it is very tiresome for me as a reader. That might just be me, though; perhaps readers more familiar with the lifestyle appreciate it rather than being annoyed by the constant reminders.

All in all, not the best book I've read, but it will most likely be an excellent read for someone else.

Kingston is a former mercenary who works double time as head of operations for Cerberus, a security/rescue/etc organization, and as an alpha Dom at Club Southside, a high-end BDSM club. King is all business until Samantha, a fantasy romance author, lands on the club's doorstep, seeking protection from a dangerous stalker. Once he thought he would be alone forever, but when King meets Samantha, he realizes his need to protect AND dominate her might make her not only a client but his submissive as well.

This is my first James novel and I found her writing style witty and fun. Her characters are well thought out and the premise is fresh and unique. If I was rating on those factors alone, this would be a 4 or even 5-star read. However, a nicely timed story arc is one of, if not THE most important elements I need to have a memorable reading experience. As much as I tried with this book, I just couldn't get there.

Despite the promising storyline, my reading journey with The Scoundrel felt rushed and cold. The beginning of the book runs directly into the meat of the story with very little insight or background into the characters or situations. The speed of the plot does not allow for essential character development and prevented my ability to establish a connection with the characters. The surface-layer feeling of this story reminds me of a 75-page novella that centers on sexual themes instead of a full-length novel capable of emotional, human connection.

TL;DR - While reading this story, I found myself wanting the plot to drip out slowly like honey. I wanted to settle in and laze with it, to go deep into the minds (and hearts) of the characters. Instead, I got a runaway train with all the same bits and bobs, just less pleasant.

A Lifestyle Club that doubles as the office for Cerberus a black ops with locations in London, England and Chicago, Illinois. Romance author, Samantha Butler thought she had a stalker, but the London police blew her off. Finally, she got scared enough she took the first flight out which happened to be Chicago. When she arrived she felt like someone was watching her so she went to a different hotel than planned. The next morning she went to Club Southside to inquire about hiring them. She was personal friends with the owners of the club in London so it was a little strange that she ended up in Chicago, King got her to eventually tell her story. He called the owner, and they agreed to take her case with her staying in a safe room at the club. King sent Jen, one of their operatives to pick up Samantha's stuff, but Jen was murdered in the process. King was immediately taken with Samantha, and he had never collared a sub in his life, but he signed an agreement with her for the duration of the case with hopes forevermore. The team learned the police were stonewalling the case, and it was coming from higher up, but they did not know where exactly. Cerberus continued to investigate the stalking and murder case both. There was plenty of BDSM action, mystery, intrigue, and a total surprise of who turned out to be the stalker. You will stay on the edge of your chair reading until you finish as you will not be able to put it down. This series shows magnificent promise for some outstanding reading a head.

I just finished 'The Scoundrel', the first book in Delta James' new series entitled "Club Southside".

"Chicago had a new lifestyle club that put the others to shame. The famous—or infamous, depending upon your point of view—Baker Street in London had branched out to Chicago. Like Baker Street for the U.K., Club Southside was the American headquarters for the covert operations group known worldwide as Cerberus."
(Delta James. The Scoundrel: A Steamy Romantic Suspense (Club Southside Book 1) (Kindle Locations 73-76). Kindle Edition.)

I've been a massive fan of the Cerberus group since Ms. James released the first book and I am proud to say, this new series only builds on that reputation. When the mystery of our heroine Samantha, a romance author, has a stalker and the London police will not take her seriously she finds herself fleeing to America on the first plane out and arriving in Chicago and ultimately at the new Cerberus office atop Chicago's new Southside Club. She needs help but will they believe her or will she be accused of creating a publicity stunt again? Kingston had been betrayed, captured, and tortured. Fitz, along with a few other operatives, rescued him and he's been healing and coming back to life within the walls of the headquarters in Chicago but he continues to keep his emotions under wrap. When these two meet, there is an instant chemistry that is only intensified with the seriousness of the situation. This was such a well-written storyline that truly kept my heart pounding, and my bits tingling, all while sitting on the edge of my seat to see what was coming next. Now I want to know what happens with Royce and Dillon.

Two unlikely people meet in an unlikely way and fall in lust, or is it more?

Kingston Coltraine has a lot of scars and not all of them are on the outside. Renditioned by his own side, he is dramatically rescued by his fellow Cerberus members. Now, he is working at the new Cerberus office in Chicago which, like its London counterpart, is located above a BDSM club.

Club Southside is not open yet but author Samantha Butler knows of its existence because of her membership at its sister club, Baker Street. She also knows that the private security company Cerberus operates out of both clubs. Having fled London the day before when she realized her home had been violated by someone she suspected was stalking her, Samantha is conflicted about approaching Cerberus. The police in her own country didn't believe she was being targeted, calling the correspondence she had been receiving a publicity stunt on her part. When Kingston insists that she tell him her story, she finds out that not everyone jumps to the publicity conclusion. Kingston not only believes her, he immediately takes charge of her safety. Of course he does, he's a Dom and has no doubt that she is a submissive - his submissive.

Great story. While it is D/s, it is also two people who realize they are meant for each other if they can just work out the logistics. First, they have to find her stalker who had now turned murderer and is still escalating. I was given a copy of this book by the author via Booksirens. My review is voluntary.

I rarely want to stay up all night to finish a book. The story of King and Samantha draws you in from the beginning & you don't want it to end. The secondary characters are fleshed out & interesting.

Samantha flees to Chicago ends up at Cerebrus where King is and after getting up the courage to go in, they met, and the fun begins. I kept finding myself smiling, laughing, and wanting to groan a couple of times. The story takes you on an emotional ride. You have no idea who the stalker is until the very end - which is a wonderful change from figuring it out by chapter 4.

The two main characters met because of the danger to Samantha but you don't really feel that's driving the relationship. It's driving the story, but the relationship is two people who are, to be cliche, perfect for each other. They fall into the interaction as if they've always known each other. While I'm sure, as Seth says, King will mess things up & he's definitely alpha, he knows just what to say to Samantha & doesn't ride roughshod over her. Yes there's "it's all my fault" a bit from Samantha but she's intelligent, strong, and a realist even writing romance books. They interact as two adults - as intellectual equals. While there's a stomping the foot, it's not at King & deserved. Unlike the other books, King isn't the caveman alpha, he's just the alpha & instinctively knows that Samantha is an intelligent adult but also knows not to talk down to her. It was a delightful break to read a story that allowed the reader to feel & the characters to just reveal themselves allowing the story to flow. I'm stingy with giving 5 stars so I suggest you start reading earlier in the evening, so you aren't up all night or pick a night you don't have to work the next day. This is a story you'll want to revisit when you need the "all is right with the world" feeling.

I enjoyed this cracker of a book by Ms. James. The pages turned with ease as I became more invested in the characters, their relationship, and the obstacles that caused them to stumble but not fall. In this story, you get a glimpse into the world of the men who run the Chicago branch of the Cerberus group. There was a diverse range of characters, but this story focuses on the relationship between Kingston and Samantha. The relationship was a whirlwind of emotions as Kingston sets out to protect Samantha from a stalker. A stalker who had followed her from England to Chicago and was escalating.

I admired Samantha for her strength. She was submissive in the bedroom but with the rest of their relationship, she spoke her mind. She took a gamble on Kingston and never regretted it. He was her soul mate. Her protector. Her lover.

I admired Kingston for his warmth, strength, and compassion. I liked how he took charge while still acknowledging Samantha’s intelligence. He vowed to keep her safe. She was the missing part of the puzzle. She brought light into his life that he needed.

For two people who resisted intimacy, this couple was smoking hot. There was an instant connection that was beautiful, and sensual with enough heat to make me melt into a puddle. The story was fast-paced and brimming with emotion. There was danger, mystery, passion, murder, and a HEA. A wonderful read from start to finish.

OMG... wow I think I'd love a scoundrel to enter into my life too if he was anything like this hot special ops hero.
From the moment I started I simply could not or want to stop reading it!
Loved all the characters and certainly they made a great impression to truly connect with them.
I must admit this " lifestyle" certainly does seem very appealing to where the women are truly cherished and loved, considering how you can read about the violence that female partners can experience in the real world.

Author Delta James certainly over her history of writing has truly perfected her passion for writing steamy suspenseful romances and has developed a winning formula to produce such entertaining novels and this is yet another one that has lived up to expectations.

A well conceived and constructed plot filled with some "hot" moments between Alpha Dom King Coltraine and his sub, Samantha Butler, with enough mystery to balance out the emotional journey between these two. Loved the humour and banter that would also occur between these two. Also love how Delta introduces cross over links to previous book characters but in no way does that affect the readers enjoyment if they have not read any of her previous works.
I admit I've never been one to have favourite authors but I can now say she definitely has become one of mine. So excited to reading more in this new series! 🥰.

Scoundrel

The story starts with an erotic romance writer who feels as though she’s being watched, followed, stalked. The last straw was when she felt her home was broken into but there was no shins of a breaking just her instinct that something was seriously wrong. She reported it to the authorities in London who basically thought it was all a publicity stunt for her work. She left and immediately packed a bag and headed to Heathrow and hoped the first flight out to Chicago.

You see Chicago now has a branch of the life style club she belonged to in London which also houses a branch of Cerberus, a private security agency that’s more black ops than PI.

Now the story takes off at a full run. There’s murder, intricate plans plotted, the victim kept under lock n key at Cerberus’ Corporate Offices.

It always seems the assailant is one step ahead, until . . .

This is definitely a page turner from start to finish.

Almost forgot that the self proclaimed bachelor falls hard for his client. Kingston also has a story which starts in the first chapter. All in all, I’dread this again and hope that there will be more to follow.

Highly recommend the easy face paced book that will not disappoint. Filled with mystery, drama, strong female lead, healthy dominance and love.

Happy Reading📖🌻

This is book one in The Club Southside series and it is Samantha and Kingston’s story what a great start to a new series. Samantha is a erotic romance author and enjoys what she does and also realised that it is not everyone’s cup of tea but then she starts getting disturbing emails and then when she is back from a trip she realised that someone has been in her house so that is when she knew that she needed some help because she could be in danger. Kingston has been recruited to head up The Cerberus Group in Chicago which has its office above Club Southside and they do quite a lot of different jobs and services. When Samantha arrives at Cerberus looking for protection and help it is Kingston that realised that he was in trouble because he was instantly attracted to Samantha and wanted her but first he had a job to do and danger was just around the corner watching and waiting for the right time to strike but Kingston will have to keep his guard up if he wants to eliminate the threat and then be able to have a relationship and future with Samantha but sometimes things don’t always go as planned and lives will be lost in the crossfire. Wow this is a fast paced and action packed read that will have you on the edge of your seat while turning the pages wondering what the outcome will be for them all in the end. I definitely recommend you read this book and you will not be disappointed.

I think the Wayward Mates series will always be my favorite. Masters of the Savoy and Mercenary Masters tie for 2nd place. I must say, The Scoundrel is giving them a run for their money. As much as I like the books about shifters, I enjoy the books written about Cerberus.

This book started out with an unexpected intensity. Knight really was put through it. I thought it was interesting Samantha was so discombobulated that she ended up in Chicago. What I expected to happen based on Knight's experience didn't happen, and I was ok with that.

Samantha and Knight definitely experienced a case of instalove that was not "fated mates" related in the Delta James sense, lol. I like the strength Samantha displayed even while being stalked and afraid. They had really good chemistry with that same witty banter I appreciate so much.

I found a couple of surprises; namely Jen, the stalker, and the fact that Adam and Chelsea are still stuck in the snowstorm, lol. I liked both Seth and Royce's characters. I also hope Dillon reappears at some point.

I was glad to see some of the men and women of the Mercenary Masters series make a brief appearance. The dialogue is always witty and fun. This was a good first book. It could have been longer for me. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

“The Scoundrel” is the first book in the new ‘Club Southside’ series by Delta James. This is a romantic suspense story with some domestic discipline and elements of BDSM.

Kingston is a mercenary who has been through hell in more ways than one. He gets recruited to lead operations for a new American branch of the London-based Cerberus Group. Its headquarters in America are in Chicago, upstairs from a BDSM lifestyle club - Club Southside. The Cerberus Group is a security company that takes on all kinds of jobs, from personal protection to international intrigue, to dealing with cybercrime. Samantha is a romance author who is being stalked, but no one is taking it seriously. When she goes to Cerberus for help, the instant connection between her and Kingston is explosive.

The story is fast-paced and includes some dramatic surprises. There are elements of Insta-lust and Insta-love, which helps keep the momentum going. Just go with the flow and enjoy it. If you’re familiar with some of her other stories, you may recognize a few of the secondary characters and locations that are mentioned. If not, don’t worry, you can start this series without having read anything else by the author.

Samantha is a romance writer, but she's not a romantic. However, she quickly realizes that Kingston "King" Coltraine is changing her mind ...one spanking at a time.

Well-written erotic romantic suspense novels are hard to find, and I liked this one. The author focuses on the romance between the bratty submissive Samantha, who is being stalked, and the possessive Dom King, determined to keep her safe. The chemistry is over the top and quick, but it adds to the appeal. The secondary plot is about finding out who the stalker is, and though the result is a little confusing, the suspense and danger leading up to the reveal kept my attention.

King is a fantastic alpha hero who is very protective of Samantha. I love how he keeps her impulsive behavior under wraps with a growl or a firm hand and feeds her dinner while she sits on his lap. Yum! Samantha is strong and sassy. She's vulnerable with the whole stalker thing and for the first time in her life feels respected and safe with the sexy hot King keeping her close and out of danger.

With this book, you'll get a tough and possessive hero primed for sex and battle paired with a beautiful, sassy blonde in need of protection. It's a great start to a great series, and I can't wait to read more.

Thank you to Ms. James for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

If a love is meant to be, it is will not be left up to fate!
I loved revisiting the Cerberus Group. And it is great that they are expanding their business into the US. This is going to be a great series. Such an enjoyable read read. King and Samantha are meant to be together. It is irrelevant that they only met because trouble is stalking Samantha. I am sure that even if she had not turned up unexpectedly on the doorstep of Club Southside, the new lifestyle club and home of the US branch of Cerbeus, they still would have crossed paths. They were meant to be together and their meeting would not be left to fate. That is apparent from the moment they first meet. Samantha is being stalked. The British Police do not believe her. She run - right to Chicago and quickly into the arms of King. He believes her story. He quickly takes her on as a client and a partner and the race is in to find out who is targeting her before she becomes a victim. This was a very good story. Full of action, suspense and mystery. It is also full of hot and steamy romance. And we witness a reunion when the British Cerbeus Office flies across the pond to help keep Samantha safe. A very, very enjoyable read.

This is my first book by Delta James and it was easy to tell that THE SCOUNDREL is the first book in a spin off series of Cerebus, a private black ops company whose agents are part of a club their company offices share space. The author made the connection between the two series seamless and informative without being overwhelming to a new reader.

I liked the plot of the story that surrounded Samantha the romance novelist and brought her to Cerebus in Chicago. I also found King’s backstory and company history compelling. These two kept me eagerly waiting to find out what could happen next.

People that will like descriptions and terminology related to the lifestyle will be happy with the attention to these details. I personally found that little dry and it detracted some from the heat. I also thought there was too much repetition of some topics that had been covered already.

As a whole, this story was solid and developed the secondary characters I could be invested in knowing more about in subsequent books.

Romantic thriller set against the backdrop of a BDSM club. Romance author, Samantha, flees to Chicago after being stalked by an unidentified ‘fan’. She encounters ’dominant’ King at the Southside club which doubles as the Cerberus Security headquarters. I liked the way their chemistry is almost instant with King’s dominant nature sensing the ‘submissive’ tendencies that Samantha has already explored in Southside’s ‘sister’ club in London. That being said Samantha is no damsel in distress, and holds her own in an admirably sassy way. I particularly liked the twist at the end of the plot which I definitely didn’t see coming, when the stalker’s identity is finally revealed. The tension builds through the tale as the stalker ramps up the danger. whilst I enjoyed the thriller aspect of this story, in my opinion the Dom/sub action distracted from the plot rather than enhanced it. If that is to your taste, you will certainly enjoy this book; I am just not sure I will be reading any more in the series.

What I Liked:
Kingston Coltraine is an amazing name for the male protagonist. The suspense level is high right away due to the stalker situation and there is a nice twist at the end. It is very steamy from start to finish.

What I Didn’t Really Like:
My least favorite part was that the epilogue didn’t have anything to do with the main characters. Instead, it was a teaser for the next book in the series featuring Royce. We didn’t get the typical glimpse into the HEA for King and Samantha.

Overall:
It is very subtle, but if you look at the cover you will notice the C in in the title is actually a flogger and the B has a ball gag. It’s not very clear from the synopsis, but Club Southside is a lifestyle club, as in the BDSM lifestyle. This is a story about a D/s relationship where both parties were already familiar with the lifestyle. It kind of took me by surprise, but once I adjusted my expectations, it was a quick and very steamy read.

So I actually read the third book in this series first, as they can all be read as standalone novels. But I liked it so much that I immediately read this one and the second one right after. While I really loved this book and definitely recommend it, I didn't feel like there was as much action in this one as I expected there to be. And maybe that's on me, for reading the third one first. Because this one is the one that establishes the characters in this series.

But the characters were really great. Samantha and Kingston definitely aren't lacking in the chemistry department and things between them get really steamy, real quick. As in, you may need to have a fan ready when you're reading this one. The plot of Samantha being an author with a stalker was definitely spine-tingling. It was chilling and Delta James did a great job presenting the kinds of emotions that this caused Samantha to experience.

I promise you that this highly entertaining, suspenseful romance is definitely worth reading and it is an excellent start to a brand new series that is loosely connected to the “Mercenary Masters” series. The plot is fast-paced with good world building and has splendid scene descriptions. The well-developed characters are unique with their individuality & one of the characters (Kingston, with a bit of a dark past) is quite determined to protect & claim the female character (Samantha) for his own. The secondary characters offer good support throughout the storyline.
There is: a security company (Cerberus), lifestyle clubs, friendship, a villainous stalker, humor, action, jaw-dropping twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, mystery, danger, threats, murder, violence, domination/ submission, discovery, compromises, love, contentment, steamy scenes & a well-deserved satisfying conclusion for this couple.
