" " Spiritual Protection is a necessary addition to any spiritual bookshelf, regardless of individual path. The instructions are clear enough for a beginner but with enough thoughtful information that even a seasoned practitioner can learn a thing or two." —Anya Kless, author of Queen of the Desert
Spiritual A Safety Manual for Energy Workers, Healers, and Psychics is a training handbook for anyone interested in deepening their psychic abilities, training gifts already in evidence, or simply developing a greater sensitivity to energy.
This no-nonsense book, with its special emphasis on safety, protection, and energetic awareness, takes readers step by step through a thorough system of exercises designed to increase competence, confidence, and skill. Focusing on oft-neglected fundamentals, Reicher cuts through the complexity and confusion so often surrounding this topic and instead offers clear instructions and explanations that even the most novice of readers can easily follow.
I'm not so sure I would recommend this book. As it seems more geared toward those with what the author calls "ruthless focus" which she claims energy workers do not tend have.
One aspect that I took issue with was her suggestion that one allow a psychic vampire to access their energy field if they are having trouble grounding, allowing the psi-vamp to suck up their excess energy. Whoa buddy! Don't get me wrong, I know some energy vampires and while they don't always mean harm, I have spent much of my life learning to stop just that. While I do understand the method to the madness, it's not something I would do. (I heard "you're bleeding uncontrollably? Well, you should let a vampire in to your house to drink the excess blood....") Yeah, sure, they'll help with the clean up but what type of connection have your forged? If a person cannot ground themselves, they're in for a bigger shock after allowing a psi-vamp to access their energy field. This likely comes from the authors self proclaimed arrogance (pg. 49) & what *I* perceived as a thinly veiled dislike toward "new agers." Ms. Reicher repeats herself nearly word for word in some areas of the book, so if you intend to read it front to back, be prepared for that.
And for anyone interested, the "chakra above the head" she mentioned is often referred to as the soul star chakra.
Positive: The book does hold a few hidden gems of enlightenment, such as recipes for detox baths, shielding exercises, basic grounding techniques...
Excellent advances shielding for beginners, different version of centering and grounding, cleaning chakras, house protection, all very detailed.
The second half of the book is for advanced users, practicing psychics and healers, with a lot of details skipped, making them unusable for beginners. Reminds me Dion Fortune's Psychic Self-Defense.
The end is for free unattached people who are seeking apprenticeship for years, not applicable to the most people from the real life.
Could be better, if information for opposite style/level of life was provided too, as the lowest common denominator, and if advanced information was described at the same level of details as the centering, grounding and shielding.
Overall, the first half of book is marvelous, and the rest is unusable. Sigh.
Any recommendations of the books at similar advanced level, suitable for beginners?
Really wish I had this book when I was working as a therapist in a hospice. The final third of the book about ceremonial magic wasn't as relevant as I'm not a ceremonial magician and have yet to meet one who wasn't totally ego-tripping. I wish the fiitnotes were just integrated with the main text.
This book is a useful introduction to shielding and warding for the beginning witch. It has a lot of information directed at empaths and others with psychic talents. Since I do not fall into this group I cannot comment on how helpful that information is. It gives a decent amount of information on personal shielding with some ideas on different types and qualities but I wish it had gone into more detail and gotten more creative. I enjoyed the section on warding as well which was more extensive. Overall, this is a good introduction and launching pad for developing your own ideas.
This book has a lot of helpful information in it pertaining to magical defenses. I like that the author emphasizes mastering the basics instead of jumping around willy-nilly.
The author uses some citations and references. Numbers are used within the chapters and explained in the back of the book, making it difficult to go back and forth.
The author recognizes their beliefs and talks about how these beliefs work with some of the techniques and what not in the book. It is refreshing to see an author who is not Neo-Wiccan in their beliefs explain ideas and practices. And even though the author is of a particular religion, I didn't feel like I was pressured into believing the same the same or that I was wrong for not worshiping their deities.
I do worry about cultural appropriation with this book. Even if the author was taught by a closed culture, the author provides some information pertaining to what was taught, such as techniques, and I don't want other readers to think it is okay for them to just use these particular techniques.
Otherwise, I thought the book was pretty good. I am working with some of the techniques provided and I feel good about them.
I heard Sophie Reicher on Angel Talk Cafe and she sounded like she seriously knew her stuff when it came to spiritual protection so I ordered this book straight away!
The book calls itself 'a safety manual for energy workers, healers and psychics', but really, it felt like it was much more geared towards those who are into the 'witchy' stuff. Sophie spends a lot of time relating exercises to the Norse tradition she follows, which although quite interesting to learn about, is not what I was looking for.
There were some useful parts - cleansing your aura with flowers for example, and I might try some of the cleansing bath recipes, but other than that I'm sad to say I found all the blood letting, fire starting, using your own urine to protect your house and pentacle drawing just not to be my thing.
Now having said that, I think this book would be GREAT for people who are into 'magic' and like using tools, spells etc. This book would be well worth reading if that's your slice of cake, but if you are just a regular old light worker doing tarot cards for a few bucks on the side this book probably isn't what you're looking for.
This may be an updated edition, but it's important to note that this is essentially the same book as Basic Psychic Hygiene with a new title. It maybe has 1-2 new sections, but the bulk of the text is the same word for word. I wish I had bought this instead of the earlier edition which I got because it had been on my wish list for so long (recommended by a friend). I find myself frustrated for not having researched better before buying the earlier edition. So my star rating is based on my own frustration. It's actually a good book, just not a new book! See my review of Basic Psychic Hygiene for more detail.
Reading this book as a Spiritualist Medium looking to add some alternate perspective to grounding and protection, I did come away from it with some stronger ideas of shielding than I had upon arrival. Written from a magician’s perspective and heavily weighted in that direction, there is a lot that wouldn’t come into my practices. I do, however, concur on using grounding cords, although I secure mine a little differently; also on the benefit of a daily prayer practice.
Whilst I have gained a little extra knowledge of constructing a shield matrix and setting a power source for that, there is a lot of information in this book that veers widely from the topic of protection and into the realms of magic practice and the ethics of teaching it. The title suggests a much narrower focus and I guess those who’ve rated it low are left wondering about that. That there’s no mention of magic at all in the title or blurb is also a little confusing.
Speaking from my own experience, and you may disagree, the majority of scenarios given are from a psychic and magical slant, which is more psychic than spiritual, particularly with reference to combat. Spiritual protection is a more passive, defensive measure – shielding and grounding. Nevertheless, Reicher describes techniques in detail and explains clearly the steps to take to deal with unwanted energies that enter our psychic spaces.
Well written and based on long experience, many useful tips on maintaining safe working environments and principles.
