Oh. Ok. I just now, this very second, found out that Scott Pilgrim wasn't originally in color. And this is the color collection. Yay! Because I hate black and white comics. And also these characters all look quite a bit the same, so if I couldn't tell them apart by hair or clothing color, this would have been a total wash for me.
Scott Pilgrim. What can I say about this? Um...? I don't get what's happening here. And that probably means it's just something cool that someone's middle-aged mom isn't going to understand. And I am someone's middle-aged mom. <--you can't expect much out of me
As far as I can tell, it's the story of a guy who is maybe the biggest loser ever. He won't get a job, mooches off his roommate, plays guitar in a sucky band, has zero life goals, and can't understand how to do the simplest things in life like how to get a haircut. The best part is that he's in his early 20's and the story opens with him describing how he met his quasi-girlfriend - who is in high school. Everything. Everything about this guy is just a HUGE red flag. I mean, if Scott Pilgrim showed up at my front door to pick one of my daughters up, I'd immediately shoot him in the face and drag his lifeless body to a pre-dug hole I have for exactly this purpose in the small woods behind my house.
But! For whatever reason, he's got cool girlfriends crawling out of the woodwork. Riiiiiiight. This leads me to believe that this is the male version of all of those romance novels I read about the handsome duke who falls head over heels for the plain Jane heroine. I ain't mad. Keep the dream alive, I say. <--as long as that dream stays at least 50 ft from my girls.
Ok. So the story just wanders around, and not unpleasantly, as you see Scott try to woo this new cool girl, Ramona. And he does! For whatever reason, she deigns to let him put his penis inside her, and that kicks off the rest of what happens. It's a surprisingly addictive story about Scott being a weird & annoying human being, and then for whatever reason having all these video gameish fights to beat Ramona's Evil Ex-Boyfriends. That? I don't get any of that stuff, other than it's just the gimmick of the comic. It's cute, but my reaction while reading was very much what the actual hell? I'm missing some pivotal chunk of knowledge that would allow me to go, Oooooh! Look what they did there!, and smugly smile to myself for being in on the joke.
Oddly enough, I didn't dislike it. I should have. But I didn't. And believe it or not, I want to see how it turns out, so on to the next volume!
This is one of those books that I always knew was out there, but never got around to reading. (Yes, I've seen the terrific and very faithful from what I've read so far Edgar Wright movie.)
This is what you get when you cross indie-rock slackers with video game fervor. The characters in this can come across as douch-y, but so can most people in their twenties. Scott Pilgrim is jobless, depressed but in a band. He meets the illustrious Ramona Flowers shortly after he starts dating a high school girl. (Yes, douch-y.) To date her, he has to defeat her ex-boyfriends in video game style battles. The battle scenes are a blast. The book is often witty. All in all I liked this well enough that I'll probably finish out the rest of the series.
I had a hard time understanding the appeal of this man Scott Pilgrim throughout this newly-coloured collection. A lot of it just seemed like a love journey exploring his relationship with two girls and his latest girlfriend's various ex-boyfriends. His encounter with the exes comes in form of a video game/musical battle and the only thing I can really say about it all is that it's entertaining to some extent, if you can indulge all the quirky oddness.
- The Globe and Mail
Like some kind of strange fever dream, this entire omnibus had me questioning what was going on the whole time. The jokes were weird, the vibes were odd, and the whole thing felt like a lame pun that didn’t really land.
Scott as a protagonist was interesting, but as a person was completely awful. Somehow this skinny, plain guy attracted all the ladies and fought astronomically well, all whilst acting like a dumb idiot; sometimes shy and sometimes dumbstruck with love.
I couldn’t reconcile between the sometimes realistic storyline and sometimes video-game style fighting. The two clashed so hard that it seemed bizarre every time characters displayed superhuman feats to which I didn’t know whether to laugh or grimace at.
The art style was fun but the colours were pretty uninspired. I suppose it beat black and white but didn’t go beyond being a bit better.
All in all, this wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t really anything more than ok. Sorry Scott, but in your fight against Kadi the reviewer you lost!
A bit cursed in ways beyond how it's supposed to be cursed-relatable-based comedy imo but otherwise an enjoyable read c: I especially like the way the panels are so cleverly layed out! Genuinely amazingly well done on that aspect I think
Scott Pilgrim is living a pretty chill life. He's 23, plays bass in a rock band and has broken a lot of hearts. After many failed relationships, he thinks he's finally found his one true love in the mysterious and alluring Ramona Flowers, a punk-rock rollerblading delivery girl. Ramona is unlike any other girl Scott's ever dated, and she comes with a lot of baggage. In order to win her over, Scott has to battle her seven evil ex-boyfriends and possibly overcome her flaws as well as his own in the process.
Right from the get-go, it's not hard to see that Scott is kind of a horrible person. And that's the main theme throughout the whole series. Almost every single character is a selfish dick that hurts everyone around them for their own benefit. Scott manipulates a girl that's too young and naive for him just to trick his peers into thinking he's still hip and cool. He disrespects his friends and often comes off as ungrateful and arrogant; refusing to take responsibility for his own negative actions and attitude. He has no problem tossing girls aside one after the other and moving on to what he wants without regard for anyone else.
Scott's a bit of a douchebag to say the least, but he subtly starts to change for the better when he falls in love with Ramona. We come to learn that he has repressed feelings and memories to hide the fact that he actually feels really guilty for all of the bad things he's done in the past, and he slowly learns to cope and grow as a person, making things up to the people's he's wronged to try and prove to himself and everyone around him that people can change for the better. Most of all, he wants to show Ramona that he's not a scummy jerk like all of her other evil ex-boyfriends.
Ramona on the other hand, isn't exactly the peak of purity herself. She's no broken-hearted maiden that needs saving, she's done quite bit of manipulation, harm and psychological damage herself. Most of her ex-boyfriends aren't even evil by any means, she took advantage of many of them, cheated on them, dumped them then falsely labeled them as bad people in order to avoid taking responsibility for her own selfish actions and deflecting any kind of guilt she should feel for them. Scott and Ramona have a lot of things in common, and nearly all of them are bad.
This isn't a story about a brilliant romance between two star-crossed lovers, it's a story about two horribly flawed people learning to change for the better by overcoming their flaws together, battling the demons of their past and learning to forgive and love themselves for all the cruel and selfish mistakes they've made. The story is a lot deeper than the surface level details would lead people to believe. Beneath the many layers of teen angst, punk rock culture, video game parodies and explosive comic book imagery is a touching tale with quite a bit of psychological depth. The more comedic elements of the story don't hinder the plot at all, they actually make it a really fun and relatable way to tackle complex issues without being depressing or melodramatic.
The main point of the story is that everyone has had a moment or a phase in their life where they were kind of a huge dick (maybe without even realizing it) and ended up hurting people they didn't mean to hurt. Everyone has made big mistakes and done bad things that got people hurt, but that doesn't necessarily make them bad people. As long you're willing to learn from your past and become a more compassionate person, it's never too late to change for the better.
I purchased the box set of the series for my nephew for Christmas. I also purchased one for myself, once I saw how beautiful the art was and that it was at a fantastic price. I can't say that I had any intention of reading them. Don't judge😬
However, my nephew, after reading all three books, wanted me to watch the movie and read his copy of the first book. After some convincing, I did watch the movie. I thought it to be okay. Not really my cup of tea. I'm sad to admit the book sat on my shelf until three weeks ago when my nephew came to claim it back with frustration.
I was looking through the books on Hoopla and saw this graphic novel on there and knew it was a sign. I'm impressed and enjoyed the graphic a lot more than the movie. The story is much more detailed and funny. The art is superb. I will continue on to book two in the near future. Scott is a Supreme azz!
The Scott Pilgrim series will always hold a special place in my world. Being introduced to the series as a teenager, and re-reading the series for multiple years, the 2020 updated color versions are spectacular. They bring so much life and vividness to the stories, so that it feels like I’m rediscovering the story again.
Look, I read this back in 2008, and as a white suburban teen boy obsessed with anime and video games, this was like a religious experience. I started wearing adidas, I picked up playing bass, I downloaded music from all the bands O'Malley mentioned in the liner notes. In short, I was hopelessly obsessed.
Several years later, I was in college, and public opinion on Scott Pilgrim had changed. Most hip types thought it was lame, which, to some degree, rightfully so. I mean, there was an entire generation of loser dudes who also loved anime and video games, who wanted to be Scott and find a girl with colored hair to make their queen. Around that time, I quietly swept my love of SP under the rug so I wouldn't be lumped in with their crowd. Still wore Adidas, though (the Beastie Boys wore them, plus they're comfy!) And over time, my own love for SP began to wane. I still loved O'Malley's art, and would devour anything he was involved in (loved Seconds, and Snotgirl was certainly a comic I read), but I started to regard Scott Pilgrim as less of a masterpiece and more of a stepping stone in his artistic career.
Anyway, now that the official Scott Pilgrim anime is coming out, I figured I would give this series another readthrough, this time with the more recent colored edition, and I am happy to report that this book still rules. I know I can't rate this objectively, it'd be like trying to assign a grade to a hoodie I wore in high school, but who cares, I love it! I *can* say that Fairbairn's coloring job is objectively great. It's a difficult task to go in and color something that was made to be printed in B&W with screentone, but it looks fantastic. Flats with limited shading is always the way to go.
Obviously some of the humor/writing reeks of the time it was written, but for me that just makes it a more intimate snapshot of the early 2000s.
Also, very weird to hear amazon described as simply 'that online bookstore'. How simple things were in 2004!
Loved this version of the 1st 2 volumes of Scott Pilgrim. I initially read this in the black and white format of vol 1 and 2. Such a joy to re-visit in full colour!!
One thing I found in the original versions was that Kim and Ramona looked exactly the same. Here it seems that some pages have been re-drawn or at least edited!!
Also, I still don’t get how Wallace knew about Ramona’s 2nd evil ex.....it’s like a plot point that just happens....
I adore Scott Pilgrim and can’t get enough of it, as most people who know me are aware. One of the things I love about the series is that I always notice new things when rereading it - newspaper headlines, signs, the double meaning of a line of dialogue, etc. Also, reading the series in colour almost feels like reading a whole new book - it’s so beautifully done. I’d read the first colour vol a while ago and acquired the box set later on. I can’t wait to read 2 and 3!
Revisiting this series for the first time in a decade and for the first time in color. It holds up man. Beautiful, interesting, totally unique in its vision. Some dated language here and there, but still incredibly immersive. The colors are fantastic too, it's a whole new experience!
I expected to really love this series since it is popular enough to have a movie but I just did not enjoy it. At all. I made it about 80% through then let myself put it down to finally end my misery.
Scott Pilgrim does a pretty good job of making his life perfect. He's in a band, lives with a friend, and even has a high school girlfriend. But as we all know, things aren't always as they appear. Scott is still reeling from a big breakup and hasn't had a serious relationship since then.
But when he crosses paths with a girl named Ramona Flowers, he suddenly wants more. He wants her in his life, even if that means battling her seven evil ex-boyfriends. That's not too unusual, right?
Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
Okay, so I'm WAY behind on the times here. I loved Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World (the movie) when it came out. But somehow, I never actually got around to reading the manga it was based on? I don't know how that happened. Oh well.
After reading Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1, I can see how good the movie was about following the comics. I mean, wow! Why can't more adaptations be this faithful? The world would be a better place, or at least that's what I'm telling myself.
Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1 is quirky and funny in the best ways possible. It introduces us to our leading man (Scott), his friends, his girlfriend, and his current love interest. You can tell right away that things will get chaotic, and that's before introducing the evil-ex battles into the mix.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Unsurprisingly, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is just as good as the first volume! It's funny, strange, and the perfect combination of elements. This is my first time reading the series, and I am having so much fun!
That said, there was more backstory in this volume than I expected. I knew it existed, but it was nice to see it (some parts were cut from the movie, in case that wasn't obvious). I hope the new adaptation keeps these bits.
As such, I'm curious to see where these bits of backstory lead. I know in the long run where they lead (Scott's broken heart followed by him falling head over heels for Ramona). You can see that they're setting up for a lot, which I love (the payout is almost always worth it).
I don't think the fight was quite as good in this volume. Then again, Scott did find a clever way to get around the fight, so that was probably inevitable? There is another fight that occurs, so I suppose it balances out...
Highlights: Humor Romantic Plot (And Evil Exes) Musical Battles and More
Only a decade late to reading these graphic novels but here we go!
This is not what I thought it was, I lowkey expected a very basic storyline. But it’s quite detailed all the secondary characters have a charm that demands attention when they’re on the page. You want to know about them and how they fit into Scott’s and Ramona’s world. Majority of characters are all flawed and just tryna find their way with a healthy dose of fighting too- I appreciate the fights. Love the art style, Bryan Lee O’Malley has such great style especially when it comes to emotion. His style also pairs so well with the humour in the story.
I need a Wallace Wells comic asap, and with that onto the next book.
Finally after years of thinking about it I can finally read the source material for one of my favourite movie of all time. And boy did it not disappoint. The story is deeper than I expected and I am enjoying a lot. Can't wait to read the rest!
