Southern Spirits #1

A Subtle Breeze

Rate this book
Book one in the Southern Spirits Series

Ezekiel Matthers and Brendon Shanahan are about to find out that sometimes all it takes is a subtle breeze to shift the winds of fate.

Ezekiel Matthers is a reclusive man, forcing himself into the exile of his ranch after a violent assault left him wounded. While the scars on the outside have faded, the damage inside is much harder to conquer. Zeke resigns himself to a solitary existence, aside from his sister Enessa and, of course, his mama's occasional visits.

Brendon Shanahan has a very meddling cousin, Gloria, who is best buds with Enessa Matthers. When the two women convince Brendon that he should hook-up with the reclusive Zeke, a plan is hatched that sets a series of events into motion - with potentially deadly consequences.

Can Ezekiel conquer his fears and accept what Brendon is offering? Or will Brendon walk away, giving up on the love he has waited for? And will the visits from Zeke's mama - deceased for four years now - help the two men find their way to each other?

Only time will tell, and that may be the one thing the lovers don't have, because someone is out to destroy everything Zeke and Brendon hold dear - and this time, the bad guy just might succeed.

A few things about me...

I am a married mom of four who spends most of the day writing, either on stories or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick and irritate me.

And it's really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I'll just let y'all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there's something specific you'd like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio:D

Zeke lives and works on his isolated farm in a small Texan town. Alone, he battles some serious anxieties that have steadily built over the years from several past traumas, including the loss of his mama, a horrible assault he survived several years ago, and definitely from the years of emotional abuse he’s experienced at the hands of his evil older sister, who has been gunning for him since he came out as a teenager.

Aside from his two friendly ranch hands and his younger sister Enessa, Zeke has practically shut himself off from human interaction. If he stays away from the town and its people, Zeke believes he’ll be safer for it, but in doing so he’s also shutting out the potential for a fuller life, one filled with friends and family and maybe even love.

When Zeke’s sister Enessa plays match-maker behind his back, he suddenly finds himself faced with gorgeous, friendly and definitely interested Brendon, who has heard all about Zeke through Enessa and wants nothing more than to make the shy man all his.

Zeke and Brendon come together quickly and passionately, throwing themselves into what seems like a forever-relationship in the span of time it took me to write this one sentence. They’re all in, warts and all, and together they find themselves dealing not only with Zeke’s emotional baggage, but also with some nasty and potentially dangerous threats, all while trying their best to get to know one another better, which they seem to think is only achievable in the biblical sense.

Interestingly, they also find themselves being helped along the way by what seems to be the protective and insistent spirit of Zeke’s deceased mama. This plot point was quite undeveloped though, considering the whole series is about spirits and all.

Generally, I liked the story, but it was just too quick with the insta-everything, and the sex scenes, although smoking hot, were too heavily featured throughout the story, especially considering the low page count. (Look at me, complaining about “too many sex scenes” – what madness is this!?)

Every aspect of this story moved full-tilt. Instead of resulting in a fast-paced romantic romp, this story moved too quickly through all the important plot and relationship moments, leaving me with a pressing need for more detail relating to character backstory, plot progression, and definitely relationship develop.

I’ve read my fair share of insta-type romances and some work for me a treat, depending on what I’m after at the time and what I expect from a certain book or author. I have a feeling I’m picking at so many aspects of this particular story because I know how much I have enjoyed some of Bradford’s more complex romances in the past, and I certainly believe this story had the potential to be a lot more enjoyable than it maybe was, had it been less rushed and more thoroughly developed.

For what this was, though, I enjoyed it. As past experience with Bradford’s series may suggest, I’ll even enjoy myself more the further I move through the series, which I still plan on doing.

Note: I read an old version of this story (from 2010, clocking in at 94 pages) and I’m unsure whether the new version (from 2015, clocking in at 125 pages) has many changes to it other than simple editing updates and a brand spanking new cover – although the increase in the page count would suggest so. Please keep this in mind, as, for all I know, some of my comments above may not be relevant in regards to the latest edition.

If you can't handle or ignore the 'instant lust-love' scenario, then don't read any further. If, on the other hand, you're like me - snorts with disbelief but then conveniently overlooks the sheer ridiculousness of the situation - then it's not a bad read.

This book had so much potential. It could have been a great story. But I found quite a few things that prevented it from being one. 1. The sex was just too much. I know that this type of story .... "erotic romance"... has a lot of sex but this was just WAY too much and it took away from the story. Brendon and Zeke are in the bathroom scared of whoever was in the bedroom to cause them harm and there are sexual references. Seriously? 2. Eva. Where did all of her anger and bigotry come from? Okay, so she was married to a preacher. That would explain (maybe) her bigotry and anger later on. But Elizabeth mentions at the end of the book how Eva had tormented her her entire life. So why was Eva so evil? 3. Brendon. Where did he come from? Okay, there is mention of him being Gloria's cousin (who was also not explained) but there is no background information on him other than a little about him being in college. 4. Back to the sex. Okay, so Zeke has made himself a hermit (basically) for years because of a homophobic physical attack. He stays away from people. Brendon shows up and within minutes of them being introduced, they have sex. Come on. That was a bit much. And not just sex. Brendon moves in. 5. Mom. Not much said about her, other than her scent and "nudges" showing up in the story.

I could go on but I'm not.

Most books that have the "love at first sight" thing turn me off. I have read a few (VERY few) that were actually written well. That was not the case in this book.

I'm not sure if I will read the others in the series. This one just really didn't do much for me.

This book has been in my library for years. The story is so over the top that it’s pretty ridiculous. However, my biggest problem with it was that it has too much sex. I enjoy a sex scene, but this book had so many that I found myself skimming them. I’m glad that’s over. 🤣

I am not a fan of "insta-love" stories, otherwise I may have rated this higher. But when the two MCs meet each other and then have sex not even 30 minutes later, I can't possibly believe there is anything there but physical attraction. Which is fine, but within the next chapter the boys have a little inner dialogue about being in love. Huh? Did I miss the sexual tension(and I don't mean just average horniness, here) or the time they spent together that was not based around sex?
If you like insta-love stories, then you would probably like this. Otherwise, their relationship just doesn't seem believable.

I think I'm feeling salty...just leaving the link for my notes.

https://www.goodreads.com/notes/26208...

Okay, I guess I could add some thoughts since I abandoned highlighting a little more than half-way through.

I'm glad it was a free read because, besides an OTT crazy ending, there was Too Much Sex. Seriously, I can't believe I'm complaining about that but it came at the cost of developing the romance/relationship; all the emotions happened at the speed of light, and some time spent not screwing could have given depth to their feelings. I think the characterization was pretty good, and I do love the idea of having help from beyond the grave (in theory and fiction, not IRL) but this one just fell flat for me.

Although...if Laine has a book I might be tempted to read that one. I do so love me some closeted cops.

4.5 Heart Review by Tammy

All Ezekiel “Zeke” Matthers wants is to be left alone. Especially since his own sister organised to have him bashed to death years ago, good thing he’s stronger than that. He survived the bashing physically but mentally, not so much. Zeke has basically cloistered himself at his ranch if anything is needed in town he either goes to the next town over or sends one of his hands. The only family member Zeke talks to is his younger sister Enessa as she is the only one who hasn’t ever accused him of being an abomination! Enessa and her best friend Gloria have decided it’s well past time for Zeke to get into the dating field so they set him up with Gloria’s cousin Brendon Shanahan. Brendon goes along with the plan for him to meet Zeke but things don’t go as planned when Zeke has a panic attack.

Brendon almost lets Zeke run him off after their first encounter but Zeke’s mother has other plans for them. Zeke’s mother has been dead for four years now but that doesn’t mean she has left McKinton! Zeke has always thought the subtle breeze he feels along with the scent he smells every now and then was his mother’s spirit. He doesn’t know if it’s because it makes him feel better or because it really is her. When Brendon tells Zeke that he also has smelt the scent and felt the breeze does Zeke begin to believe that it really is her.

As Brendon and Zeke get closer Zeke begins to feel he can actually have a relationship without his older sister Eva interfering until he dares to be seen in town with Brendon. Now, Eva is a puritanical, homophobic religious zealot who happens to be married to the local pastor’s son. Eva’s hatred is that intense that when Zeke came out to his mother Eva decided it was her place to rid the world of evil gays starting with Zeke. When the physical violence started their mother told Eva to leave and that was when everything was ramped up he was attacked every time he showed his face in town. The culmination came when Zeke was beaten almost to death by a group of thugs that left him with knee trouble that still plagues him to this day. As with everyone in town Brendon has heard the story that it was Zeke’s own sister that arranged for his death and when he lived she was just about frothing at the mouth she was that enraged! When Eva sees Zeke and Brendon together in town she starts all over again but this time she decides to do the job herself. The only thing is there’s a new sheriff in town and he isn’t prepared to let Eva get away with trying to kill her brother just because of who she’s married to.

I can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up a part of a family where you know at least one member hates you so much they’re willing to kill you just because you’re different. Unfortunately, this happens all too often and a lot of the victims are not as lucky as Zeke. They are either dead or so broken there really isn’t a lot left to put back together. A Subtle Breeze is the perfect way to start a very in-depth look at the many facets of growing up and living in a small town, which happens to be McKinton and the way the spirits who live there help the living.

There's little I appreciate more than a man who is strong and confident, yet secure enough to be loving, nurturing, and capable of showing his emotions. Brendon Shanahan in 'A Subtle Breeze' by Bailey Bradford has all these qualities and so much more. Ezekiel Matthers has many of the same characteristics as Brendon, but because of a physical assault his self-confidence is undermined, leaving him lonely and despairing. Brendon and Zeke would be perfect together, but only if they are able to overcome the unimaginable obstacles which lie before them.

I fell in love with Brendon right away. His sincerity and good nature is infectious. His sense of adventure and determination made my heart flutter. Brendon is the kind of man we all dream about, the one who is there to support his lover regardless of the circumstances and love him through even the worst of predicaments. He knows when to be firm and when to be gentle. When he falls in love with Zeke, he's bound and determined to prove his devotion no matter what.

Zeke really wants to have a relationship; he's tired of being alone but is afraid not only for his own sake, but for that of anyone close to him. Therefore, he pushes everyone away. Zeke needs someone who will stand by him—in spite of himself. He falls in love with Brendon right away, but his fear and over protectiveness threaten to destroy their relationship. These men need a big shove and receive it from a most unlikely source: Zeke's dearly departed mother. Even from the grave she loves and protects him as best she can. For Brendon, this takes mother-in-law problems to an entirely unique level, but the mere fact that he believes Zeke when he tells him that the gentle breeze and light touch which surround them at times is his mother, is proof of Brendon's undying trust.

'A Subtle Breeze' includes everything that a love story should have—two handsome, sexy, amazing men, love, passion, and adds a touch of the supernatural. It also has anger, hate, violence, angst, and justice. Little in life is written in black and white and Bailey's characters depict this idea; their actions are exciting, frustrating, unforgiving, hateful, compassionate, and enlightening. Each one of them moved me either to tears or anger depending upon the situation. Of all of Bailey's books I've read, this one has left me with the best impression. Not only did she write a passionate, exciting love story, but she also covered the serious subject of gay bashing and hate crimes. If you're half the hopeless romantic that I am, you'll thoroughly enjoy reading this book.

After a violent attack, Ezekiel Matthers exiled himself to his ranch and a solitary existence aside from his sister and his mama’s occasional visits in this spellbinding paranormal romance. I was completely spellbound by Zeke and Brendon’s story and completely outraged on their behalf…talk about evil, someone should take his enemies and ties them up in ant hill…for eternity. I can’t wait for my next visit to the fascinating town of McKinton and its wonderful characters.

Sometimes you just need a book that is easy reading and doesn't make you think too much, just for the relaxation of it. This story filled that need for me. It's instant attraction and in bed the first time they meet, but I can overlook that if the book is entertaining with a decent plot. It does take stars off though.

I liked Zeke with his panic attacks and worries, and Brendon was a good partner for him, thoughtful and caring. Nice easy read with a very satisfying ending.

This is beyond insta-love. This is, I heard his voice and had to have him and so I did. Filled with so many lack-luster sex scenes, this book needed to be balanced with a strong plot, engaging characters, or strong humor. Reading this felt like romance-by-rote 101 and was impossible to get through. There was no heat, no build-up, no desire - just wham, bam, come again sir.

A Subtle Breeze follows Zeke and Brendon as they fall immediately in love and determine to be together despite any obstacles, which may include a ghost, nutty family, and community of small-minded bigots.

I was initially hopeful that I would enjoy this book because it incorporated themes of PTSD and I like seeing how that is handled in literature and ways the author promotes healthy healing. The closest that I saw of healthy healing was the few times Zeke admitted he had been wrong about many people. That was it. He'd been wrong to judge so many townsfolk as being the same as his (very crazy) sister.

Which bring us to the crazy sister. [This is a huge spoiler - BE AWARE] Overall a strongly disappointing experience for my first Bailey Bradford read.

This was sickly sweet with no bite, no heat, no burn.

Now, I happen to also pick up Rory's Last Chance, also by Bailey Bradford, which I found quite shocking given how much I enjoyed Rory's Last Chance. I'm not sure why there is such a disparity between these two books (which have quite a few similarities: about 100 pages, disappointing covers, working on a ranch, ranch owner hidden away from intimacy/love for many years, ranch owner's parents dead, sister involvement, crazy/hateful family member, trauma/assault against H/h, and many intimate scenes). Yet, Rory's Last Chance has heat and draws the reader in for an emotional investment. It is great and I highly recommend it.

Happy Reading!

I’m always hesitant to read paranormal books featuring ghosts because I find more often than not that I don’t care for the way in which they are portrayed by many authors. However, as I have read an increasing number of Bradford’s books, I was more than willing to give her Southern Spirits series a try as I enjoy the author’s writing style. It turns out that A Subtle Breeze was the perfect beginning to the newly revised and rereleased series and I absolutely loved the way the author crafted the contemporary M/M romance with touches of the paranormal.

Whether it be due to a lack of options or an intense physical attraction, there is a serious case of instant lust on Zeke’s part toward Brendon. On the other hand, Zeke’s sister and Brendon’s cousin have been feeding him stories and pictures about Zeke for a while now and Brendon has developed a healthy crush on the man – a crush that intensifies when they meet in person. Considering that it’s been four years since Zeke was last with a man, their rush to intimacy was not surprising. And it sure was hot! Also not surprising was Zeke’s meltdown when he learned that Brendon wasn’t in town for just a few days, but for the entire summer … and longer if it proved to be worth his while. While their relationship progressed pretty quickly, the combination of Zeke’s loneliness, his mother’s guiding spirit, and Brendon’s crush made it feel right for these two men. When trouble hits and Zeke is once again the target of bigotry, Brendon’s insistence on standing by his man merely cements the transition from lovers to more. As their relationship strengthens, the threats elevate until they find themselves in a life or death situation that left me freaking out at the incident while at the same time warmed by the response of the townspeople.

I really enjoyed the way in which Bradford used Zeke’s mom to guide him and Brendon toward one another and away from harm. Rather than making her a ghost that communicates vocally and/or can be seen visually, she is a spirit – like a breeze pushing at their backs or transmitting feelings (i.e., danger) rather than actual words. Her spirit was a guiding force rather than a full-fledged character and I really enjoyed that take on the afterlife. The bigotry and the quarter from which it came kept the conflict and tension high – almost too high – and provided the men a force against which they could unite. As this is the first installment in the series, there is a bit of world building as the reader is introduced to the town of McKinton, Texas and the characters important to this and the next few books, but not so much as to drag the story out unnecessarily. I thoroughly enjoyed A Subtle Breeze and am already looking forward to reading the next book in the series, When the Dead Speak, so I can find out what’s in store for Sheriff Stenley.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not sure where to start with this one. It has a lot of qualities I dislike in books mix together so there isn't a whole lot of balance it out and make it at least an average read for me. Insta-love, sex in highly unlikely circumstances, characters with every stereotype wound up into one, huge drama incident that has been done to death.

I was really looking forward to this book. I thought the ghost would be interesting and was hoping for a good romance. Unfortunately this turned into a sex romp with a story line that lacked anything unique. The ghost aspect was use only sparingly and was never really developed.

This is the first book in the Southern Spirits series and features Ezekial "Zeke" Mathers and Brendon Shanahan. Zeke is a "broken" man. He was the victim of a viscous, hate-based, attack years back and it's left him a broken man, unable to trust any of the towns people. He's become a recluse on his ranch, only interacting and trusting the few people he works with. But his cousin and a friend set him up with Brendon Shanahan, who has seen Zeke's picture and knows all about him before he meets him. Sparks fly immediately and they have sex within I'd say, 20 minutes of meeting each other. I mean, seriously, this one takes the "insta-love" concept to a whole new level! But if you are able to suspend belief long enough to get past that, it's an entertaining story. There are no real surprises. You always know who the bad guy is that is causing Zeke so much trouble and she gets her comeuppance in the end. The paranormal aspect with Zeke's mom's ghost was interesting but I can understand Brendon being a little bit creeped out too. This is one book that is very heavy on the sex. So of course I'm not complaining. LOL! Your eReader/book will be melting from all the sex, so be forewarned if that is not your thing. I'm looking forward to reading the second book because I liked the sheriff that was introduced in this story and would really like to read more about him. Overall, not a gripping story for me, but it was entertaining, and I love all the smexin' ;oD

Great book. It had great emotions in it the fear, the shame, the sadness, and also laughter and love. There were two things that kept me from giving it a full 5 stars. First is the lack of character background. While we got to know about Zeke and his sisters a little bit, there still wasn't much there. Like his reasons to stay, even though he was scared. Also, I found that Brendon's background got left by the wayside. I would have loved to know more about him and his family, more than just the fact that Gloria was his cousin, he wanted to be friends with her, and what he had studied in college. There was such potential here and it could have been so much more. Second, I found that the excessive sex was a bit much. I understand the fact that this is an erotic romance, but seriously, maybe every other page had some sort of sex on it. If the sex scenes were dialed back a wee bit, then I felt that the characters could have been built up a bit more. Also, one question that keeps nagging at me was if Enessa, Ezekiel, & Elizabeth all were raised and turned out just fine, what the hell happened to Eva? Why was she such a bigoted bitch...sorry no other words for it. If even just two of the sex scenes were cut, that could have been filled with more of Brendon, why Eva was just plain psycho, and more of Zeke. Still, it doesn't stop me from looking forward to reading the next in the series. Overall, good book.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

3.5 Stars

This is an interesting start to a new series where one of the main characters isn’t real. Ezekiel’s mother is just a scent, a breeze that passes by or a feeling that you get as though you are being led or nudged, yet she was an integral part of the story as she worked hard for her son’s happiness.

This is a short story so events happen very quickly but within that the character of Ezekiel is fleshed out as we are given an insight into his life. Ezekiel lives and works the family ranch but has become a hermit after a vicious attack left him with permanent injuries and nightmares. His feelings of fear and isolation are compounded by the fact that he knows who was behind the attack, yet refuses to let on out of some misguided loyalty.

Brenden is a friend of one of Ezekiel’s sisters and knows the horror story that has made the man the way he is. When he first meets Ezekiel he feels like he already knows him and he is quick to react and offer support when he breaks down and has a panic attack.

Their love and their sex life is fast and furious as the scent on the wind pushes them towards each other. Brenden’s support makes Ezekiel feel braver than he has in forever and although his attacker is seething at this new friendship and bad things start to happen Ezekiel finally opens his eyes and sees that not everyone living in their small town holds the same beliefs.

This was such a sweet and hot novella!

Poor Zeke to have what happened to him by someone who should have been supportive no matter what just because they were a mean and vindictive person. I really liked Zeke's character in this book and how he was stronger by the end of this when he realized there was people who would be there for him.

Brendon I really liked him too. He was strong for Zeke from the get go and wanted to be there for him to help him through everything that happened.

Now this book has some very hot Scenes from the get go.. A lot of really hot scenes which usually I am not a fan of but in this novella it works.

Once you find out who is behind everything you feel anger and sick to your stomach because without saying who did it and giving away spoilers, you can't help thinking what a "insert bad word here". So not a fan of that person!

I can't be the only one that finds it so sweet that his ghost visitor is who it is and still visits him too makes sure he is okay. I loved the paranormal aspect to this story too!

All together I really liked this Novella and would definitely recommend it!

Definitely had it's good points, there were hot scenes and I really liked the focus of the book on homophobia and hate crimes. I really felt for Zeke and what he had gone through and probably, like most people who read this book, I wanted to do some serious damage to that sister of his. I found it touching, that even though he wasn't aware of it, he had people still watching out for him, who still wanted to support him. That was a lovely aspect for the book.

The part of the book that brought down the rating for me, however, was the insta-love aspect. The I-love-you's and the speed with which their attachment to each other happened, was just too fast to be believable for me. Insta-lust, sure but the affection was there from the first moment they laid eyes on each other and I found it hard to stay with it. Which was a shame, I would've loved to have seen a more natural progression because they were both good characters.

But if you don't mind insta-love, give this one ago, it did have it's touching points and certain characters (the Sheriff) left good enough impressions that I'll probably end up reading more in the series :)

Zeke was attacked when he came out. For fear of it happening again - either to himself or to those he loves - he has isolated himself and won't even go into his local town anymore. He is trying to run his ranch without having any dealings with the townspeople at all. His younger sister refuses to let him push her away, though, and through her, he meets Brendan. Now I am not a fan of insta-love, but I so desperately wanted Zeke to happy, this didn't bother me at all like it usually does. The romance is fast and hot but is also probably the only way that Brendan would be able to sneak past Zeke's defences.

I really enjoyed this story! It was hot, sad, horrifying and romantic. The mischievous spirit, who only showed up when needed, was brilliant and, together with the reactions from the various people, made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion.

The first book in a series, and I'm really looking forward to reading more. Definitely recommended.

My, my, my... this book was completely different from what I was waiting for, and it was so worth it!!! The serie Southern Spirits, goes like that because in every book there is the spirit of someone who was close to one of the MC and is helping the two MC.

A Subtle Breeze goes around Brendon and Zeke; Brendon is Gloria's cousin, and Gloria is Enesa's best frienda, where Enesa is Zeke's younger sister. So, Gloria and Enesa are trying to hook up Brendo with Zeke, because they think it time for Zeke to leave the shelter he built after some gay bashing he suffer in the past. And Brendon is up to be the guinea pig; not that he is unwilling, not after seeing Zeke's picture.

And then, Zeke and Brendon meet and BAM!!! It's on!!! But Zeke doesn's want Brendon in town with him, beacuse if he stays he may be harass like he was. Brendon is no up to that bull... and he decide that he stays, beacuse he thinks and feels that Zeke's is the one and he will fight with everything he has to get the man.

Afetr a series of events, everything wraps up beatifully and we get our HEA.
