Veterinarian Cara Morrison is planning another walk down the aisle with her ex-fiancé—except she isn't the bride and rancher Nicholas Chapman isn't the groom. With their best friends' wedding looming, the last thing maid of honor Cara wants is to rekindle a romance with best man Nicholas. But when he needs her help to unravel the illness that's descending on his herd, she discovers that the sparks between her and Nicholas still burn bright. Is it possible to heal the wounds of the past and start over with the cattleman she never stopped loving?
Even with over 1.5 million copies of my books in print, I still feel like I haven’t written the perfect story. From my office in the woods of Northern Alberta, I’ll keep trying. Inspired by spectacular sunrises, breathtaking Northern Lights and long walks through wooded trails, the stories keep coming. Great book! I really like the premise behind it. I think all too often we are chasing something that ultimately takes us away from what we are really wanting and this book tells a story of such two characters. I liked how the typical romance in this book took a whole lot of talking and soul searching before their happily ever after.
I wasn't sure when I started it. It felt like it was going to be awkward and painful, and it *nearly* did. Cara and Nicholas were once upon a time in love, but Nicholas' blind devotion to his father and the ranch meant he was hellbent on leaving her to take dangerous but lucrative jobs (oil rig stints, time on ships in the arctic, security in the Middle East).
Cara grew up with a mother who was hellbent on taking dangerous jobs (mission work, orphanages in war-torn areas, etc)... and her mother left her. And broke her heart/spirit... and then died... and left her forever. Cara *CAN'T* go thru that again. So she breaks with him.
Three years later, she's back in town as her uncle has a heart attack and needs her help in the vet clinic until the new guy can come into town. She trained in her uncle's shoes, so she's filling in... but then she finds out Nicholas is not only home, but going to be best man at the wedding her best friend asked her to be maid of honor at. Awkward, see?
But things change. They're older/wiser. They're more understanding of each other. They actually TALK, this time. They want another chance. And they're not only coming closer to each other, they're coming from two different directions to the Lord, each on their own in their need/fear.
The verses, the wisdom, the dialogue in this is AMAZING. It was uplifting, encouraging... inspiring in the way that 'Love, Inspired' books *SHOULD* be. THIS is what they should all be like.
And the romance between Nicholas and Cara is *FELT* in this one. Most 'Love, Inspired' books have a romance rating of 'oatmeal, no sugar'... or 'flatlining heartbeat'. Not so this one - Aarsen really touches your heart, if you let her.
That's *NOT* to say I didn't have some trouble with her church-ology. Pg 16: "When he stayed away from church, his heart felt empty and his soul unnourished'. *BS!* Moses, Noah, Abraham, Isaiah, Jonah, John... NONE of those closest to God in scripture went to church - this is dogma, NOT Truth.
She says the same thing on Pg 159: "It's hard to nourish your faith when you don't have community" - um, NO. While scripture says 'forsake not the assembling of the saints', it's not a command, it's a recommendation in Paul's letters. I point at the faith of the forefathers again, in argument. Those strongest are those who draw nigh unto God... not people. This is dogma, not Truth.
But aside from that? This is *SO DEFINITELY* a keeper. I really enjoyed and was edified by much in this story - it was what I needed to hear at this time in my life, and that touched me.
I think Cattleman's Courtship was very awesome. It was well written and I think it made me stop and think about Philippians 4:11. I love Philippians and I also took a second look at Psalms 139. Thank you for helping me to want to search the scriptures that I hold dear to my heart! I tell my young students that a good author speaks to you as if she or he is holding a conversation with you and with your book I felt each character! Great story! I am curious is there a sequel? Would love to read a continuation of these characters stories!
I liked this book, a story of a second chance at love. I liked the main characters, Cara and Nicholas, and their willingness to sacrifice for a second chance at a lasting relationship. I love a hero who can admit he's wrong.
