Graham Hall is twenty-six and has a dream job as a travel writer. He's come to Colorado for work and a little personal down time. With his article done and the six-month lease up on the small cabin in the valley, he's stayed around until his next assignment. In a downtown Denver bar, Graham meets Edward and after a short conversation agrees to a blind date with Edward's business partner, Jane. After all, what could it hurt?
Jane is completely oblivious to the machinations of Edward and Graham and shows up at Graham's cabin to deliver a box of handmade chocolate truffles. From the minute Graham opens the door, Jane falls head over heels in lust. A plus size, mid-thirties woman, Jane isn't sure what Cowboy Surfer, as she's dubbed him, sees in her or why he's so tenacious in his pursuit and tries throwing him off at every turn.
The inability to say continue saying 'No' leads to hot, scorching sex and a lot of follow-up phone calls opening Jane's eyes to the realization that maybe life doesn’t have to revolve around chocolate truffles, but rather around a delicious, well traveled younger man.

Melting Jane is a short and very sweet novella from Lissa Matthews. This is the first story I have read of hers but it won't be the last because I thoroughly enjoyed it! Since a very bad break up with her ex boyfriend Jane has become a bit of a recluse. Working from home and living with her best friend / business partner Edward has left her with very little need to leave the house so she spends her time slobbing around in comfy clothes and perfecting the recipe for the chocolate truffles they sell. Edward is determined to help Jane get her confidence back so he decides to set her up with Graham, a travel writer who is in the area for the winter. Edward knows Graham is the perfect man to bring Jane back out of her shell but Jane isn't so keen on being set up by her best friend. Can Graham change her mind and get her to give him a chance?
This novella is perfect for anyone who is looking for a short but steamy read that you can easily get through in one sitting. The chemistry between Jane and Graham is fabulous but I actually loved the way he helps to give her back her confidence. She was so worn down by her ex that she had a very low opinion of herself and Graham is determined to show her just how special she is. Graham is absolutely adorable, a hot cowboy but also wonderfully sweet and the things he comes out with would melt even the most sceptical woman's heart! Yes, their relationship develops quickly (it is a novella after all) but it felt believable and you can't help but route for them. I also really liked the friendship between Jane and Edward, he really had her best interests at heart and I would actually like to see Edward get his own happy ending.
Melting Jane is romantic, sexy and steamy and a highly recommended read. I can't wait to get my hands on more from Lissa Matthews!
This one involves Jane (the owner of a candy business) and Graham (hunky freelance travel writer). It starts out with Jane making a delivery of her homemade truffles. Usually her business partner/roommate/gay BFF, Edward, makes the deliveries - but today - he insisted she make this one delivery herself. She gets there and meets hunky Graham. And when she tries to give him his truffles, he tells her that he didn't order any. She immediately gets mad, thinking Edward had played a joke on her. She insisted he take them anyway - which he did - only if she would come in for a few minutes and get warmed up. (They're in Denver - and it's winter.) So - as they're sitting on the couch - Graham opens the box of truffles and laughs when he realizes it's a box of rocks. Now Jane is pissed. She had a feeling that maybe Edward wasn't playing a joke but trying to set her up on a weird sort of blind date with Graham. Graham denies knowing anything about a set up or Edward or anything. They share a hot kiss.....but Jane leaves in a huff and goes home to talk to Edward.
Turns out, Edward met Graham at a bar and thought he would be a good match for Jane. See - Jane got her heart broken pretty bad a while back - and she's sort of just given in to moping around and not exactly making an effort to get over her ex. Edward said he just wanted her to smile again. (Awwww.)
Later that night, as Edward rushes out for a "date" and insists that he will be out all night.....Jane sort of figures that something is up. And sure enough.....Graham shows up a few hours later wanting to take Jane out to dinner. Jane ain't havin' it. She makes him leave when she just REALLY wants him to stay. He does leave, only to come back a while later with pizza and beer. If she can't go out to dinner, he'll bring the dinner to her.
And of course - the night ends in sex. HOT sex.
The next morning - after Edward comes back home and realizes that Graham has spent the night......they begin to talk. Jane wakes up and walks in on the tail end of a conversation and takes some words out of context and ends up thinking that Edward made Graham ask her out and that the last evening didn't mean anything to Graham. Furious and somewhat heartbroken - she kicks Graham out again.
Here's what I love about this book - Jane's character. She's a bigger girl who has a lot of self esteem issues, mostly because of the ex that broke her heart. He used to tell her she needed to diet and lose weight....that she wasn't pretty enough....that she needed to change her job.....blah blah blah. And Jane's self esteem suffered because she started to believe him. I've been in very similar situations - where I went into a relationship feeling pretty damn good about myself, but I let the guy's insecurities rub off on me in the form of him telling me that I have the problems - issues - flaws (and not him) and that I'm the one that needs to change (and not him). Believe me - that fucks with a person's head. So in this case, I could relate to Jane on so many levels that it was just scary. And I loved Graham. How can you NOT love a hot ass guy that loves your curves and doesn't want you to be a boney ass poster child for bulimia.
You know there's going to be a HEA. And I must say - I LOVED the chance encounter with her ex-boyfriend and the possible reveal about him. (And just so ya know.....I have those same suspicions about my last ex-boyfriend! I think that's why he was such a miserable bastard and why he tried to break me down so much.....because he couldn't accept who he REALLY was so he felt like he needed to try to make me hate who I was.)
Gah. I'm going from book review to personal diatribe of my bitter love life. Anyway....
Solid 4 stars! I can't wait to read everything that this author comes out with!
I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer... but it is a short story. So with that said.... here is my review...
Oh man where do I start with this one. Jane and Graham....
Jane is co-owner of a delicious dessert company. Edward, her best friend, and her run the business from a loft they share. Their business is great! She can work from thier home in her sweats, baggy shirts, no bra and her fluffy slippers anytime she wanted. Not having to go out in public had its perks. Edward is the meeter and greeter for the company. Things are going great for Jane and Edward in the business world. In her personal world... things are not all that great. Being dumped by a guy who just wanted you for the person he thought he could change you into was sinking Jane to an all time low. Allowing on person to have that much control over you is a deadly thing to do. Will that be the death of her... or her chocolate truffles... or the blind date Edward set her up, oh did I mention Jane did not know about it???
I read this book in a matter of hours. I could not put it down (well... turn off my computer). It is an emotional ride of one woman, Jane, her best friend, Edward ~ who I heart! and Graham... a man after my own heart. Put these three together and watch the batter start to rise. Edward wants his best friend back... Graham did not know what he was looking for... Jane needed to get over "the jerk." Now let's stir in Edwards love for Jane with Graham's passion to see her happy... and watch Jane grow and learn about herself with these two men.
Ms. Lissa penned another very well told story. I can see Jane as one of my friends. Being dumped by a jerk and trying to pull her out of whatever he spell he weaved around her. Edward did what any other best friend would have done... set her up on a blind date. Jane's heart is not sure how much more it can take before it breaks for good. So swearing off men seems like a good idea, until she literally gets put in Graham's hands. This is an awesome story. Jane does not hold her tongue, but she does cling to the insecurities her ex left behind. How does one person overcome those insecurities, how do you know it is time to do so? When it is time to face the music and move on with your life?
Graham is a my kind of man!!! Oh damn this man! He saw what he wanted ~ Jane. Graham let it be known to Jane that he wanted her ~ all of her. Every turn that man was there, letting her know he was not giving up because some jerk decided to hurt her in a way that might have ruined her for another chance at happiness. Just the thought of someone hurting her like that had Graham's blood boiling. He wanted her to see what he saw through his eyes. A gorgeous, incredible sexy, smart, witty and hot loving woman.
Where do the truffles melt - here: one conversation taken out of context leaves flour all over the place.... Jane overheard a conversation between Edward and Graham and only hears a "piece" of it and the crap hits the fan!
Now go out and get this book! Believe me, it will melt your heart and make you want some truffles (and some hot sex ~ maybe with the truffles, who knows!!)
I love Ms. Lissa's writing style in this short book. She made her characters come to life on the pages before me. Their lives unfolding, the explorations of self-worth, the process of letting go, the healing and the loving that goes with it all. From best friends to lovers, this story has it all. The ingredients for an awesome story!!! Ms. Lissa, I commend you on another fine job!
This from Graham to Jane.... "“You're beautiful. All woman. All curves and valleys. I want you.” Graham fisted a hand in her hair, holding her head firmly so she couldn't look away. “Damn, how I want you. And I don't ever want anyone, not like this, not like that either. But you… Fuck. I'll fight every shadow in your eyes..."
Now tell me you how would you feel if your man told you this..... Damn straight! =)
I can remember a time when my father used to shout out the car window to a group of teenage boys, “Wanna date my daughter?” I was in a green minivan wearing one my unfortunate Eddie Bauer sweater vests and horribly uncomfortable training bra. Not cool. Humiliated, I would slump down my seat wishing my father would not try and set up me via drive-by-dating. I still break out in a cold sweat when my father rolls down his car window and I see the mischievous twinkle in his eye, which brings me to Sugar Rush and meddling gay business partners who like to play matchmaker.
Jane is set up to meet a client under stern instructions to be dressed in a frilly pink snow-bunny suit and obscenely tall high-heels. As she makes her way across the treacherous ice to hand deliver truffle chocolates, Graham, the sexy looking cowboy surfer, is confused. He didn’t order any chocolates. Jane is further humiliated to find out there are no chocolates in the box and this has been a set-up by her altruistic gay friend to 'get her out there' in the dating field. Like any other red-blooded woman, she adopts the strategy of fleeing the scene so as to escape any further gauntlets of humiliation.
From this point on the story arcs with Graham trying to date Jane who has been burned by her last relationship and wants nothing to do with a younger man. Unable to resist his intelligence and charm she ends up having hot sexy-time (on top of chair!), only to learn later on that Edward, her business partner, had offered Graham money to take her out. Feeling betrayed Jane tries to shut Graham out of life without waiting to hear his side of the story.
I had one teeny hiccup, I would have liked more expansion on the part where Jane overhears that Edward offered to pay Graham to go on one date with her. It seemed a bit rushed where Jane was upset (rightfully so) and before Graham told his side, it seemed the problem was resolved. I also had a little bit of a problem connecting with Jane, as even if I had been burned, who could possibly turn down a well muscled, cowboy surfer? That's like saying no to chocolate! It's just not done! My niggles were when she often complained about her body, instead of endearing me to her, it came off as defensive versus vulnerable or self deprecating. Graham had to continually keep telling her she was pretty and that he liked her curves. Although this didn’t deter my reading enjoyment, at times I was a bit put off by her behavior. Aside from this, I felt Sugar Rush was a well written, concise story that was enjoyable and fun!
Overall I really enjoyed Sugar Rush. I liked the aspect of a younger, intelligent man falling in love with a older woman who has trouble seeing her own value. (Pssst) There is a really sexy scene when Jane accidently catches her partner Edward having sex with the downstairs neighbor Eric. She has a total peeping tom moment and it was titillatingly erotic! And yes I was ubber excited to get a mini (light) m/m scene.
I really liked this story. It made me laugh and it was pretty hot. The dialogue was blunt but felt real. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was because the heroine was a tad annoying and that part stretched on for too long. Otherwise will read more from this author.
I loved this. I loved the way Graham thought about Jane and how he cared about her. It was very well written with a lovely ending and all the characters had depth. A great read :)
