In 1994 Sheriff Mack took a courageous stand to defend the U S Constitution and the autonomy of Sheriffs against the Clinton administration. His lawsuit and subsequent victory at the Supreme Court proved once and for all that the Sheriff is indeed the ultimate law enforcement authority in his county an in this country. He is not a bureaucrat and he does not answer to one. He answers to his boss, the citizens. The Sheriff is the employee of the people and exists to serve and protect them in all matters. This book should be read by every citizen, police officer, and especially each sheriff of these United States, that we may become united in our service to the American people and dedicated to the preservation of those precious freedoms that so many have fought and died for. To uphold and defend the U S Constitution is our primary duty and our sworn responsibility.
While some worthwhile topics were briefly raised in this book (booklet, really; a staple-bound paperback of fewer than 50 pages), any valuable discussion was lost among cherry-picked, over simplified interpretations of the US Constitution and views of some of America’s Founders. Other than quoting the very vague oaths of office taken by county sheriffs, which is similar or identical to oaths taken by all government officials, nothing was cited to support the premise that the sheriff is the supreme law of the land or has the authority to legally prevent the perceived overreach or abuse of the federal government. In the example that came closest, a case filed by the author and others against requirements of the Brady Bill in the early 1990s, the author successfully used the very processes provided by the Constitution to overturn a law he determined was unjust. It was an example of the Constitution working the way it was supposed to, not being ignored or usurped.
Additionally, the book was poorly written and/or edited.
Everyone should read this book, especially those in law enforcement. Why is it that so many people in the professions know very little about their duties, powers and responsibilities? If citizens knew that the Sheriff is the only law enforcer that is not controlled by the government but answers only to the citizens they might pay more attention electing him. The Sheriff not only enforces laws but protects the citizens of his county from all other law enforcement agencies and government officials. So why don't the citizens know about this? As the government cannot control the Sheriff Connecticut disbanded them and made them Marshals who now come under the direct control of the government and not the citizens. Now Connecticut residents have no protection from the government, i.e., they are now all slaves. As Lt. Paul Vance, spokesman for the Connecticut State Police recently said to a citizen, "I am your master."
