The Ring Companion

Rate this book
On its release in Japan, Ringu (‘The Ring’) heralded a hugely popular new horror style. Successfully blending science fiction and the supernatural to chilling effect, the film’s story interweaves the ‘urban myth’ of a cursed videotape with the mysterious death of a psychic girl. This in-depth companion to The Ring examines the phenomenon from the original novels, through their film adaptations and remakes, including the blockbuster movie starring Naomi Watts. Placing the films in their cultural context and examining their cross-cultural appeal, this is the definitive guide to The Ring in all its incarnations.

You watched the cover! It's already late!

This is a reference book about "The Ring" movie franchise, plus other examples in the horror film industry.

ALL WELL AND CREEPY

I still remember the first time that I watched The Ring (that first time in the American remake), and while I was watching it, I was thinking that it was so far an entertaining movie but I didn't understand why so many people was so scared about it...

...and then I reached the moment.

If you ever watched the film, you'll know what "moment" I am talking about...

...Dang! Dang! Dang!

Yes, then I understood why was so much buzz about it!

BEST OF BOTH CREEPS

After watching The Ring, I was lucky that thanks to the hype of this very movie, while it was the American remake, it opens a market for video clubs (it was quite some time ago) to bring a whole bunch of options of Asian Horror films.

So, I was able to watch Ringu (the original Japanese version).

I think that if you take the Japanese presentation and storyline merging it with American background music and special effects...

...you may well have the ultimate version of The Ring.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF HORROR

This lead me to experience a huge ammount of Asian Horror films becoming a hard fan of the genre.

I have been able to watch A LOT of Asian Horror films from all the geographical area, mainly Japan, South Korea and Thailand, that possess (pun intended) a prolific industry about Horror films, but also Hong Kong and Singapore, along with China & Indonesia too.

In fact, thanks for my journey through Asian Horror, I was able to meet other Asian movie genres and TV series (usually call "dramas" there) making a quantum expansion in my personal knowledge and appreciation about films and TV, and even Music too.

And all started thanks to The Ring.

So, buying this book (back in 2005) wasn't something that I needed to think much,...

...I just do it!

In fact, I had to order it through a local bookshop then.

WITH THIS RING...

This reference book is not only a companion to The Ring franchise in its American facet but also its Japanese original version,...

...starting with the original Japanese prose novel and its book sequels, along with its expansion to TV series, manga and American film remakes...

...but even the book goes further showing a creepy good tour through the origins of the Horror Film genre in America, along with the precursors in Japan, and finally the "New Wave" of Asian Horror movies "born" (in all before mentioned Asian countries) thanks to the international success of the original Japanese Ringu movie.

Without a doubt, Ringu was the game changer to define the BEFORE and AFTER in the whole Asian Film and TV industry.

Any fan of Ringu and/or the Asian Horror genre will find quite entertaining and rich the reading of this awesome reference book.

I love everything to do with The Ring (original trilogy and books) but this was just bad.
