It Had To Be Us

Rate this book
We were always meant to be connected, it’s how that’s the problem.

Logan Taylor is ridiculously good-looking, carefree, and young. I’m responsible, reserved, and not looking for anyone. We’re worlds apart, but those worlds collided in ways we never could have imagined.

The first time I saw him, he was sneaking out of my dorm room. Naked.

The second time we crossed paths, he pulled me out of a deep spiral I’d been in for days. And by the third, we discovered a mutual friend.

To say our story is complicated is an understatement.

But neither of us was prepared for the chain of events that took place after the fourth time we met.

From fake names to innocent games, I tried hard not to fall in love but failed…miserably.

Because there’s a reason Logan and I shouldn’t be together.

And that reason existed long before we met.

Authors note: It Had To be Us is a dual POV emotional new adult romance filled with angst, humor and heat. This interconnected standalone contains adult language and themes. For a list of potential triggers, please visit Katherine's website.

“I don’t care that you slept with Ellie, I…” Logan’s face pales, causing me to trail off, panic rising back to the surface. “What's wrong?” “I thought your sister's name was Elizabeth, but you just called her Ellie.” “I did. That’s what she called herself when we were younger.” Logan nods and I see him visibly swallow. “Do you have a photo?” I don’t, but maybe her social media accounts are still live. “I can try and find one online.”

Not only were Dani and I meant to be, but Liam too. It was always supposed to end up this way.

H is a playboy who’s slept with h’s sis and the h is trying to get custody of the resultant child and we find out along with the two of them in the 86% mark. The sis is de@d for the record. And the H thinks he was always meant to raise the child (that he created with the sis) with the h.

Just wow! I’m totally in awe of this book and Katherine. I was sucked in from the very beginning I had an instant like ok obsession with Logan from Katherine’s other books (and I would definitely be taking him up on his personal surf lessons) but Dani she is 100% a character I knew I would adore from the start, she was smart, sassy and funny and her love of all thing musical was heartwarming and so relatable music makes us feel and this book focused hugely on that and dug out emotions from me that bubbled to the surface and I was smiling from ear to ear and then crying the next.

Dani and Logan cross paths a few times before they start to see it as a given that they are meant to become friends or something more and Logan had the playboy image which he is more than happy with until Dani is all he can see and watching him fall was beautiful but with every one of Katherine’s books we are thrown a twist and our hearts break but she does put them back together in the best way.

There are a few triggers in this book so please check those but as something happens in this book which is very close to my heart I have to applaud Katherine for her handling of the subject and the characters reactions were in my opinion 100% accurate. Family and friends are a massive part of this series and this warms my heart I can see it all taking place in vivid pictures making me wish I could see it on the big screen.

The final twist was just stupid. As was the heroine’s non-reaction to the news.

I did skip to the end to see what happened with her late fiancé. Of course he did what he did. Of course the heroine couldn’t have just had a nice guy. So mad I wasted my time on this.

“Since the moment we kissed, and maybe even before then, you have owned me.”

A delightful visit back to the Heartstrings world. This book follows Logan and Dani, the first time their paths cross, Logan is sneaking naked out of her dorm after a one night stand with her roommate.

They meet later at friendsgiving and their story takes off from there. We’ve got the banter between them and I love the little game they play addressing each other as people of my favourite movies 🧡
We’ve got emotion, definitely a few places it tugged on heartstrings for me topped off with some spice and surprise revelations.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but i love the friendship group in this series and that we still get to see bits of all the great characters in each book.

I enjoyed this and binged it, Logan is a babe, I mean he made her a Romy and Michelle road trip adventure mix..say no more.

I didn’t think it was possible to top ‘When Nothing Else Matters’ but this book absolutely did! I loved this book so so SO much. Definitely my new favorite in the series.

The story was truly heartbreaking and I really felt for these characters so much throughout the book. I related to the characters and their situation a little bit so this story really resonated with me.

I absolutely loved Logan. He’s now one of my top book boyfriends overall. I loved seeing his entire mindset change and him going from massive playboy to lovesick fool over time after meeting Dani.

“Since the moment we kissed, and maybe even before then, you have owned me.” I think I melted into a puddle after reading this scene. 🥺🥰

Dani has been through so much and was really relatable to me personally. I think she was really good for Logan and vice versa. I loved their chemistry and their banter so much.

I will say, I was NOT expecting the plot twist towards the end… I’m not kidding when I say my jaw hit the floor! I can’t even imagine what those characters would have felt like in that moment and I really felt for them.

Thank you so much to Katherine & her team for sending me this ARC. I have loved this series so far so I can’t wait to read the 4th book when it comes out!

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster in the best way!!!! Logan and Dani’s story was so full of depth. Their happy moments were extremely happy and their tough moments were heartbreaking. I really enjoyed how Katherine kept me on my toes the ENTIRE time with so many twists and turns. Just when I thought something was going to play out a certain way, it quite literally did the opposite. 😂 I absolutely loved this book. It had everything: amazing spice, heartwarming moments, heartbreaking drama, suspense (well, at least for me. At some points I was stressed for them ok??), and a beautiful happy ending. Also, there is more than 1 epilogue!! I really enjoyed that cause I cannot get enough of these two. 😍

You absolutely need to read this book!!

I don't know where to start to talk about this wonderful book. If you read the previous books in this series you've probably been waiting for Logans book as much as I had.
I had the pleasure to read the beta draft and I just loved reading this book so incredibly much. I can't wait for the final version. It was hopeful and painful, so intense und unpredictable and the characters are so authentic. I love the way Logan is slowely falling for Dani and the way Katherine describes the process. There are funny moments, where you can literally feel the connection and love between them. I am trying hard to not give too many spoilers, but their "relationship" is also complicated due to external circumstances.

I love Katherine's writing style and the way she builds characters and relations. This one's again very special and not to be missed. It should be on your TBR for 2023.

“It doesn’t have to be today,” I say, not wanting to do anything that adds to his heartache. “Doesn’t it?” Logan says, his brows furrowed as he considers my words. “Because I kind of feel like it does. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?”

We were always meant to be connected, it’s how that’s the problem.
And that reason existed long before we met.

Reasons to run and grab #ithadtobeus
✔AGE Gap romance ..Logan's a hot surfer ..Dani's graduated and working with the football team PR
✔Cute banter ..they kept reffering to each other as famous rom com couples ..my fave was the 10 things i hate about you when he sang to her🤗
✔Plot twist that connects them
✔Found family that is supportive of them both a college town I wanted to move to before the book was over.
Angst/ steam 🌶🌶/ and just the perfect balance of laughter and tears
The way it made me feel 🤯😥😭🤣🤣👨‍🍳💋🌶😱🤗

With all the good things , the third act break up kind of threw me. Theyd talk , argue ..mess around say good bye . Again then again. Then a second major plot twist , . Up until that point this book was reaching for a five , this cute , sweet and spicy couple who shared a love for an adorable kid. I wish i had beta read this and made some suggestions it had such potential to blow you away., i still want to read the rest of this series especially Lucy's story!

Something I really love about interconnected stand-alone novels, is returning to a friendship group and getting to know each of the characters all a little more with every book. It feels like such a treat getting to see couples that you’ve been so invested in just living their HEA. Katherine really builds on that through this series and it was so good to see all of the ‘friendsgiving’ group and their growing relationships.

By now, if you’ve read the earlier books - you’ll know that Logan is the ‘no strings attached’ player of the group… until now! He meets his match in Dani and their chemistry is instant.

The banter between the two of them was so entertaining and I loved their movie reference game. Despite their relationship being very light and playful at the start, their story is emotional and at times totally heart breaking.

Katherine really takes you on a journey with Logan and Dani, one that will make you laugh, cry and gasp in shock!

We got to see quite a bit more of Lucy in this book which has got me so excited for her story which is also coming very soon!

The Heartstrings Series is all available on KU, if you’ve not read it yet - what are you waiting for?!

It Had To Be Us is the third book in the Heartstrings series and is Logan and Dani’s story. I loved Logan even more after reading this book. A reformed professional surfer, Logan was carefree and not looking for a serious relationship until he meets Dani. I adored Dani. She was so quirky and easy going. Their meet cute was so funny and awkward. When they cross paths again Dani starts to become a fixture in Logan’s life.

I loved how music and movies played a big part in this story. I loved all the movie and character references. I loved how that was one thing that Logan and Dani shared a common interest in. Their playfulness towards each other was cute to watch.

I was shocked with the plot twist. I didn’t see it coming at all. Despite all that I really liked how everything played out. It Had To Be Us is a story about finding love where you least expect it and it’s about loss and heartache, and finding true happiness in the end. This whirlwind romance will make you heart swoon, break you down and put you back together in the end.

I am truly blown away. Just wow. I devoured this book, like I did the other books. This book gave me all the feels. There was passion, heartbreak, steam, and pure love. I absolutely loved it, the chemistry between Logan and Dani were unmatched. The inside jokes they had were adorable. It was fate but in a realistic way. They were destined to be together. I love Katherine’s writing style, the way she builds characters, relationships, and how she paints the picture of the story. This has easily become one of my favorite series of all time. They are all so different in their own way and I like that.

This was one of my most anticipated reads for the year and I've been counting down to reading it. And, in true Stephanie fashion, I read it in a day. Sorry not sorry. Logan and Dani are everything I expected them to be...and more.

Of course there was a few twists and turns and gasp moments.

My Sweetness, this story and this couple have stolen my heart in the best possible ways...

It Had To Be Us (Heartstrings Book 3 by Katherine Jay) gives us Logan's story who we have met in the books before as Summer's hot pro surfer and playboy best friend. Logan has a playful and flirtatious exterior yet he has dealt with an inner battle (or two) for long. He has distanced himself from his father after finding out his father had an affair and betrayed his family. In this stage he meets his 'Dani' (reference to Dani & Sandy), but his Dani is also dealing with so much while grieving. These two hit it off immediately, sharing their love for nostalgic movies and music. But Dani thinks Logan is a player and she needs to protect her heart after losing so much. But what will happen when Logan truly values Dani and decides this is it? Well, stay tuned as this story is sweet, has so many twists and Logan's determination will simply win your heart.

Prepare yourself to meet Logan Taylor, definitely TOP BOYFRIEND MATERIAL, also prepare yourself for some tears as this reading is perfectly balanced too by being sweet, emotional, nostalgic and definitely hot! Our boy does enjoy some "outdoor" fun.

What to Expect:
Ex Playboy Flirtatious Hero
Emotional Twists
Grieving MC
Outdoors Spice
Reverse Age Gap
College Setting

A 5 Star Read for Me! I can't wait for what's coming NEXT!

Katherine Jay delivers another emotional, complicated love story. The cast features some familiar characters from former novels in the series and introduces Logan and Dani, whose relationship has many hard bumps along the road but seems meant to be.
Tropes: shy girl/player; age gap (she’s six years older); daddy issues (his!); family secrets; misunderstood motives

It’s difficult to describe the plot without major spoilers, but suffice it to say, ‘complicated’ is an understatement! If you’re a fan of angst and tangled emotional family relationships, this story will resonate with you, but there are a lot of more lighthearted and fun moments, too, like the banter between the main characters as they playfully take on the identities of movie characters in an ongoing guessing game, and their adventures with Dani’s small nephew Liam.

This is a serendipitous love story right here!
Fate and coincidence brought these two together multiple times, and Logan always held on to a piece of that

The emotional journey both Logan and Dani went on was full of heart, angst, and light humor

Logan and Dani had great chemistry. Their story was flirtatious with cute banter, and reading their playfulness had me wanting to read more

Every layer of Logan was exposed in this story. He wasn't just the outgoing, playboy friend. There is so much more to Logan than how he is perceived. The deeper we get to know hi, I loved him even more, especially for Dan. It was best to be able to read his character development and growth throughout

The way he only ever saw Dani! C'mon
Complete Swoon!!

This is a pull at your heartstring, beautiful story with many twists I never saw coming

Wow!! This book y’all! 😍😍 This was absolutely a 5 ⭐️ read for me. It had great banter, adorable cheesy moments, some serious moments that left my heart either pounding or breaking, and some fantastic spicy moments. Definitely note before you read this book that it does have triggers that deal with the death of a parent and dealing with grief. Overall this book had it all, and I will absolutely be reading the others in the series.

~~ I received this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest opinion! ~~

so after getting into a reading slump because of school and finals in February, this book got me out of it!

I love this series so much, and I was so excited for this addition to it!
Katherine always makes me fall in love with every single character she creates, the characters in this series are all deep and complicated and never flat, they all have a story behind them, there's always an arc, always some character development to follow alongside the love story, and its definitely evident in this one too!
Logan and Dani's stories, how they connect, how they evolve, I loved every second of it!

I love how the series connects with all the characters and the timelines.
That's also why the epilogues are my favorite parts of the books! And these epilogues definitely did not disappoint!

my love for the characters in this series made me wish we would've seen a bit more of the other characters in this book, like I wish there was more of Summer who is Logan's best friend, but that's just a personal preference since I'm just in love with them all!

Katherine never fails at making me go through all the emotions while reading her books, obviously nothing different this time around! I laughed, cried, got angry, I am so very invested in these books at this point, honestly I could read a book with Joel's therapy notes and I'd be happy 😂

also, like always, top tier smut right here! 😏

I loved this book soooo much!!! I was Immediately hooked from the very beginning with “Danny and Sandy’s” meet cute, their fun, and silly banter and inside pet names for one another.

It Had to be Us is a beautiful love story about the player leaving his one night stand in the middle of the night who ends up meeting the one woman who will eventually turn him all around and into a better man.

I honestly could not put this book down! I enjoyed reading all of Logan and Dani’s many meeting encounters that led up to their intense romance as well as the movie character references they make for one another. There is an instant connection between the two characters which initially stems from Logan’s little brother, Liam, who is also Dani’s nephew. As their love story unfolds simultaneously with many of life’s challenges, you can’t help but empathize with the main characters and root for their love.

This novel contained so many exciting plot twists and “OMG moments” that kept me reading for more! Will highly recommend this book to all!! Thank you for writing such an amazing story, Katherine Jay!! I truly enjoyed this ARC copy! I anticipate reading more of the Heartstrings series in the near future!

Happy Release Day @katherinejayauthor!!

It Had to Be Us is the 3rd book in the Heart Strings Series by KJ and is Logan’s story!!!

We got sneak peeks of Logan in the previous books but I was looking forward to get his story and Katherine delivered!

Logan meets Dani as she is sitting in the dark whilst he is trying to sneak out of her and her roommates house doing the walk of shame. Yep. What a ‘meet-cute’.

Logan is a total playboy but Dani is not looking for anything at the risk of getting her heart broken again after what she has been through. Logan tries to break down her walls but she is having none of it but feels their chemistry. Knowing that Logan is a player, she knows nothing comes of it but when they get together they don’t realise how much their lives will actually become an angst-filled mess that not only just affects them but the people around them.

“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲?”

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this story was *sigh… I love them. I loved Logan and Dani the best out of all the couples so far in this series. Logan was charming and you could feel how much he really started to fall for Dani. His growth was fantastic especially considering the heavy topics touched on in the book.

“𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀. 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹. 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘂𝗽.”

You could feel Dani’s hesitation to move on and have a fling or anything at all with Logan. I loved seeing how the both fell for each other and how they both worked through the situations that the world threw at them.

Another great book from KJ!

I’m not going to lie, poor Katherine Jay had her work cut out for her because going into this book… I didn’t like Logan 🫢 *gasp* I know, I know. But I didn’t.

Peeling back Logan’s layers was a journey for me. I love love love Dani. Logan really had to work for it 😆 but he did! He became so much more than the irresponsible playboy he used to be. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Dani blow into his life and flip it up side down.

🏄 Former Surfer
🏄 Reverse Age Gap
🏄 Reformed Playboy
🏄 Past Trauma
🏄 Steam

The movie references in this book are top tier. I laughed. I had some jaw dropping moments where I scrambled to my phone to scream at Katherine for what she’d written. There are regrets and big big emotions.

Katherine Jay is one of the most talented authors I’ve read and she continually blows me away with the stories and characters she creates. The emotions she manages to evoke are so high.

Do yourself a favor and put this one on your tbr. It releases on March 16 and will be on KU 🏄

Katherine did it again!! She managed to so beautifully write Logan and Dani’s story. All throughout the book you get a feeling of nostalgia as she ties in the characters from previous books.

You find yourself riding an emotional roller coaster as Logan battles childhood trauma, as well as learning new things about himself. Dani too is dealing with her own doubts and relationship trauma, these two broken hearts, literally and figuratively fight through.

Better than a TBR!

I was fortunate enough to have received an advanced copy of this beautiful and amazing book and I was not disappointed. This book takes readers through an authentic journey of real love, pain and heartache as two characters learn how to find a balance between the two while their worlds clash in ways that none could have predicted.

The character development is remarkable with each individual’s personalities growing more deeply throughout the course of novel. There are plenty of surprises along the way that keep you invested in where it all leads, which culminates in a compelling plot twist you really didn't see coming! Plus there's lots of pining and romantic tension between our Logan and Dani that will tug on your HEARTSTRINGS without fail - making it almost impossible to put this down until you've read every last page! If you're looking for a heartfelt and enjoyable read then give this a go - it won't disappoint!

What another heartbreaking adventure in this series!

This book was more emotional that I was expecting (check trigger warnings)

We’ve met the MMC, Logan, in the first book, he was a playboy who is one of Summer’s best friends. The FMC Dani has a heartbreaking past. These two meet unexpectedly multiple times. Fate keeps bringing them together.

The banter, song and movie references are so spot on. Their steamy connection will have you wanting to read more. It makes you love these characters as the fall for each other.

The plot twist in the 3rd act will have you reaching for tissues. I loved these two, and of course Liam! I am so glad they get their HEA.

It Had To Be Us by Katherine Jay

Ratings:
⭐️: 5/5
🌶: 3/5

Quote: “What about you write us our own song,” she says with a smile. “And then we can be ourselves.”

Tropes: reverse age gap, reformed playboy, grief, healing, surfer, music lovers, soulmates, betrayal, tear jerker

——————————————————

You guys. This book made me cry three times. THREE. It was such a page turner, and I’m still reeling from all the emotions it inspired in me. Katherine, this book was so freaking good - you did an amazing job!

The hero…..
Logan was a playful, flirty surfer with a passion for photography. With his quick wit and flirty smiles, Logan was every bit the reformed playboy I loved watching turn into an obsessed hero. He was the also jokester that felt more deeply than he ever let on. And I absolutely adored him (don’t worry, Joel. You’re still my favorite - but Logan is a VERY close second). Logan’s journey through this book was filled with so much heartache, growth, and healing.

The heroine…..
Dani was our smart heroine with a knack for saying accidental innuendos and who was still healing from all the losses she’d suffered in her life. After everything she’d been through, she deserved to be happy and cherished. This woman held so much in and put on such a strong front when she really just needed someone to be there and support her. While she shouldn’t have gone through all the heartbreak she did, I believe it just made her the strong, kind-hearted woman who won me over from the prologue.

The couple…..
This couple was everything. Everything about them, from their flirty banter to their shared love of music to their movie game, was a beautiful story to see unfold. Their relationship definitely got out to the test a few times over the course of the book, but it only made their connection that much more obvious and stronger. And while they could sometimes be stubborn and not see what was right in front of them, there was absolutely no denying that Dani and Logan were soulmates and meant to embark on the journey of life together.

P.S. I also loved Liam. He was adorable and any scene with him in it stole my heart. And watching Logan and Dani interact with him as the story progressed only made the story that much better.

I wish someone had told me to bulk buy tissues before starting this because I am def a crier!! I knew this before but wow! This hurt, but not only in the heartbreaking way. It was so much more than amazing. No words I find will do this justice.

I first met Logan in Dylan & Summers story (When nothing else matters). Hes fun, carefree.. hot as hell!! WNEM was my favourite of the Heartstrings series. But this stole it. Logan owns my heart now.

There are so many layers to this story and from page one I was hooked. As it all unravelled my heart either broke or soared. Logan and Dani first meet with L creeping out of dorms butt naked. Later Logan is moving back home and they have a mutual friend. Dani isnt like Logan though, shes reserved and as far from a social butterfly as you can get. Shes happy with an evening on the sofa! Fate seems to have plans for them though and keeps throwing them together. Logan falls fast and hard but neither think the other wants anything serious - he is a playboy after all! When each of their pasts catch up with them and secrets are revealed, everything around them starts crumbling and theyre just trying to survive. And for both, music is an escape and I adored how they learnt everything about each other with something as simple as that. It was so relatable and music choices definitely reflect emotions.

I dont think I can say just how epic of a love story this is. Katherine had me up all night reading and I messaged her constantly (im sorry!) with my reactions. There was a lot of fucks in there! This blew my mind. I can confidently say that this is a top read for me for this year, if not ever. Logan. God! I love him so so much. The plot twists, some I saw, some I really didnt. The spice - hella hot!! The connection, the intensity, the friendship, the humour, the emotions. Everything about this was phenomenal. If I can get you to read one book (my love for dark romance aside) I beg it is this one.

✨ PRINCEMAN REVIEW ✨

📝 Logan first meets Dani leaving her roommate's bedroom. Flash forward years later, and a they cross paths again, but this time, under sadder circumstances. Then, they "meet" one another through a mutual friend. Their lives are connected in more ways than they could ever imagine, and their chemistry is undeniable. Dani knows playboy Logan isn't for her, but why can't she seem to stay away? Logan, knows Dani is different than any of the other girls, but can she make him change?

What I 🤍:
🏄‍♀️ Playboy Surfer
🎨 Mature, Steady FMC
🍿 RomCom Movie References
🔥 Public Spicy Scenes
❤️‍🩹 Trauma and Healing
👦 Adorable Younger Brother

If you love RomCom movies, this book will make your heart sing! Dani and Logan define gravitational pull. No matter what happened, they just can't stay away from one another. I loved all their lighthearted moments, but then, they'd retreat back into their shells. I really wish they had communicated better with one another, their friends and family. Luckily, they did grow over the course of the book, but I especially felt Logan had a lot of maturing to do.

Prince's Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Passion: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Read if ➡️: You love emotional romance books.
Read 📅: Anytime of Year
CW ⚠️: Death of loved one on/off the pages, estranged parental relationships, custody disagreement

This book was really EMOTIONAL. I went into this thinking it would be light based off the description, but in reality, it's more like a roller coaster ride. Be prepared for all the feels. Around the 40% mark and 90% mark, I was in shock! 🤯 I found myself needing breaks because how heavy it occationally got. This book is perfect for fans of CoHo books.

Thank you Katherine Jay for a free ARC of this book! I read this book out of order, but I will go back and read the first two books. 😊
