Es muy fácil de leer y tiene un enfoque sistemica, no solo estructural. No me atrevo a darle más de tres estrellas porque tiene una visión muy heteronormativa de familia, por ejemplo, el autor menciona que un subsistema conyugal es "la únion de dos adultos de sexo diferente con la intención expresa de constituir una familia", considero que poner como lectura de un curso un libro con estas definiciones que caen en la heteronormatividad en pleno 2019 no es lo más sensato teniendo en cuenta que estamos en una sociedad que se diversifica cada vez más, nos debemos educar para tratar con todo tipo de familias no solo con las "nucleares".

(3) Family system's resonance, its sensitivity to the individual members' actions: range of enmeshment and disengagement.
(4) Family life context: sources of stress and support.
(5) Family's developmental stages and its performance of task appropriate to the stage.
(6) Patient's identified symptoms is used to maintain family's preferred transactional patterns.
Joining and Restructuring Operations/Interventions.
- Restructuring confronts and challenges a family in an attempt to force a therapeutic change.
- Joining operations do not challenge; they decrease the distance between family and therapist, helping the therapists to blend with the family as they they participate in the events of the therapeutic session.
- Sometimes a joining operation can be a restructuring operation too. It does so without confronting family members.
Metaphor: In joining operations, the therapist becomes an actor in the family play. In restructuring, he functions like the director as well as an actor. He creates scenarios, choreographs, highlight themes, and leads family members to improvise within the constraints of the family drama. But he also uses himself, entering into alliances and coalitions, creating, strengthening, or weakening boundaries, and opposing or supporting transactional patterns. He uses his position of leadership within the therapeutic system to pose challenges to which the family has to accomodate.
When the therapist joins the family, he has two main tasks. He must accomodate to the family, but he must maintain himself in a position of leadership within the therapeutic unit. He must resist being sucked into the family system.

La terapia sistémica ha sido el enfoque psicológico más innovador a final del siglo XX. Gracias su epistemología y sociología, dicho enfoque ha permitido romper con la lógica estructural de la interacción humana en grupos y la consideración de variables para la observación y ejecución de la conducta. Y aún empleada en grupos reducidos, como son las familias, amigos o centros de trabajo, no deja de lado su complejidad y características de evaluación y diagnóstico sobre los problemas que acarrean dichas personas.
Salvador Minuchin, reconocido psiquiatra y pediatra argentino, elaboró este manual de psicoterapia enfocado en el grupo familiar, donde explica, aparte de las bases y características del enfoque sistémico estructural, el manejo e intervención para la dinámica de grupos, así como el tipo de lenguaje empleado por los pacientes evaluados para describir su interacción interna.
Debido a que es un libro técnico, el lenguaje empleado por el autor, las frases y explicaciones, escapan del usuario común (aquel que solo quiera enterarse de las cosas sin una previa búsqueda de información que le permita introducirse al tema). Incluso, me atrevo a decir que no hay libros de sistémica que sean “sencillos” de leer para el público; y también para los mismos psicólogos y psiquiatras. Esto termina de reforzar un punto clave en la terapia sistémica, y que aludí en el párrafo anterior: el lenguaje es la clave para el entendimiento y la descripción de lo que se es, se sabe y se desea. Uno tiene la obligación de ajustar su lenguaje a los términos empleados por Minuchin y seguir su planteamiento psicoterapéutico.
Algunos lectores y especialistas piensan que la terapia sistémica es una extensión más de la terapia cognitiva o que forma parte de la corriente humanista.
Discrepo con estas ideas, ya que la intervención es completamente diferente a como se hace en otras terapias (es más lúdica, interpretativa sobre el entorno, más estructurada y gráfica conforme la relación de las personas, independientemente de los contenidos aprendidos o traumas alojados en la psique), y no forma parte de la corriente humanista porque centra al individuo “humano” (valga la redundancia) como eje de todo, sino al contrario: es más relativizar la individualidad como una extensión o núcleo de la vida en grupos, como una jerarquía inevitable o una conformación de partes iguales que han de establecer códigos y conductas para sobrevivir en el tiempo; y a esto hay que sumarle principios que escapan del manejo de la persona, ya que ni la ética ni la moral pueden explicar en su totalidad su manifestación (como que existan conductas contradictorias entre miembros de un mismo entorno donde solo se refuerza un tipo de pensamiento y hábitos; pues la lógica conductista diría que estas personas aprenderían a comportarse de tal manera como lo dictaminan los modeladores de dichos grupos).
Personalmente, pienso que la terapia sistémica es el enfoque que tiene más potencial para romper con las bases de la psicología cognitiva y conductista, apostando por interpretar la relación de las personas en su sociedad, en sus subgrupos, y explicar que no todo es un “causa-efecto inmediato” o que deba ser explicado por el razonamiento aristotélico (que es lineal). Al contrario, la teoría sistémica ha demostrado que las circunstancias conductuales se asemejan más a la modificación encadena de múltiples escenarios y respuestas, donde la realidad funciona como un cúmulo de engranajes moviéndose en simultáneo, y que si uno deja de girar o se retrasa, todo el sistema lo hace.

El formato de este libro me parece interesante, ya que, por un lado, nos aporta elementos teóricos de la terapia estructural de la familia (origen, evolución y premisas); por otro, permite al lector echar un vistazo directo al trabajo de Minuchin, Whitaker y Montalvo, pues se incluyen las transcripciones de entrevistas a las familias Smith, Dodds y Gorden, a cargo de estos brillantes caballeros.
Minuchin propone a la familia como una matriz de la identidad, pero subraya que esta última no se limita a la experiencia grupal, sino que también se experimenta mediante un sentido de separación y de individuación: la familia imprime a sus miembros un sentimiento de identidad independiente.

Bowen was right: a book on psychothepeutic techniques/maneuvers is a messy affair. The possible number of productive interactions between a therapist and his clients are so numerous and so idiosyncratic that trying to somehow list them up, even in the form of stories, makes up for a very artificial text. Not only that, nothing can dissuade me that most of these maneuvers came naturally to the author and he just attached technical names to them afterward.
So if you lack any imagination or an inner compass when it comes to dealing with other human beings, this book might interest you.
PS: there are good parts in it, specially the first half.

Essential book in the study of estructural family therapy. Minuchin's words come easy and clear, providing a useful theoretical framework for therapists to work with. Both the importance of proper family functioning and the respect for their members' individuation are discussed.

I appreciate the cases provided, and it led to me wanting to learn more. It provided some information, however, I would have appreciated cases or more in depth information on non-trad families or families with both parents, eg. single parents, multigenerational parental systems

Goed boek over gezinstherapieën. Daardoor wel eenzijdig naar het problematische en naar therapeutische technieken getrokken. Toch enkele lessen te leren voor alledaags gebruik.
Gezinnen bestaan uit verschillende subsystemen: elk individu, dyades zoals man en vrouw, generatie, geslacht (grootvader-vader-zoon), taak (ouders). De drie belangrijkste zijn echtgenoten, ouders en kinderen.
Fasen levenscyclus gezin (gebaseerd op Duvall&Rogers en Minuchin):
1. Jong echtpaar zonder kinderen
2. Jong gezin met baby's, peuters en kleuters
3. Gezin met schoolkinderen
4. Gezin met tieners
5. Het krimpende gezin
6. Empty nest: echtpaar waarvan de kinderen de deur uit zijn tot aan pensionering
7. Bejaard echtpaar: vanaf pensionering tot aan de dood van één van de echtgenoten
8. Weduwschap
Gezin is een systeem en streeft tegelijkertijd naar instandhouding (homeostase) en verandering. Homeostase kan disfunctioneel zijn. Vaak wordt één van de leden van een gezin aangewezen als veroorzaker van een probleem, maar speelt in werkelijkheid het constant herhalen van ineffectieve transacties binnen het gezin. Een andere bron van problemen is te nauwe of te afstandelijke relaties.
"Mensen zijn vertellers van verhalen, bedenkers van mythen, verzinners van werkelijkheden."
"Zuiver cognitieve constructies hebben zelden voldoende zeggingskracht om het sein te geven tot verandering in een gezin."
Grenzen tussen subsystemen zijn noodzakelijk: ouders - kinderen, kinderen moeten problemen onderling oplossen evenals ouders.
Minuchin is vanwege zij werk vooral gericht op problemen in het gezin. Maar ook hij ziet de bijdragen van het gezin die betrekkelijk weinig worden bezongen: verzorgende , ondersteunende, koesterende transacties. Deze zijn zozeer een deel van de werkelijkheid dat men er eenvoudigweg niet bij stilstaat.
"De weg is hoe je hem aflegt"; reiziger en reis zijn één, zoals danser en dans één. Wat gebeurt er als je het geluid zachter zet om de muziek beter te horen; dan verdwijnt het!

Pietra miliare nel campo della psicoterapia e del counseling sistemico-relazionale, questo saggio è stato scritto da chi questo tipo di terapia l'ha fondata. Salvador Minuchin (1921-2017), insieme agli altri noti esponenti della scuola californiana di Palo Alto, è stato infatti uno dei pionieri della Terapia Familiare negli Stati Uniti; e qui svela al lettore, con un linguaggio sempre ben comprensibile, le sue tecniche per condurre in maniera esemplare i colloqui terapeutici con le famiglie. Minuchin è un genio e ha scritto libri fino a 3 anni prima della sua scomparsa, avvenuta a 96 anni; poco prima di morire, aveva programmato incontri in Italia, cancellati per motivi di salute; peccato non averlo mai conosciuto.

Really good and comprehensive manual on Milan's model of systemic therapy. The chapter about the first session with a family will be really helpful for new therapists.

Interesting insights into Minuchin's theory. I loved the dialog of actual therapy sessions contained in the book and the different means of therapy that were utilized . Very interesting.
