I cannot remember the last time I struggled so hard to finish a book. My problems with Highland Wolf kicked off at the very beginning and then only intensified as the story continued. I did a little research after reading a review copy and discovered this is book 15 in a long running series and it is a reissue from 10 years ago. Interesting, but neither was the real root of my problem.
The simplest explanation is that I thought this book was boring. I liked the setup well enough. James was the laird of Dunncraig Keep but was framed for the death of his wife three years ago. Now he is posing as a woodcarver to get close to his enemy, reclaim his land, and rescue his young daughter. Meanwhile, Annora is the bastard cousin of that enemy. She takes care of the little girl to earn her keep and she has grown to love her. She hates her cousin and his awful men, but she wants to protect the little girl and will not leave her.
I like a little bit of Scottish brogue in my highlander books, but it was out of control here. Every bit of dialogue was seeped with it and I don’t just mean “doonae” or “och” now and then. People “ken” everything or they “suspicion” it. It got very old very fast.
My next issue is how it obliterated my suspension of disbelief that the laird of the keep can just walk back in the door and be unrecognizable by everyone except one person simply by dying his hair and putting on an eyepatch. This is ridiculous. Oh yeah, and he pretends to speak with a French accent. Eyes are rolling all the way to Scotland. His biggest concern is whether someone will see him naked and recognize that the carpet does not match the drapes.
The love is totally insta. And the heroine, who is a virgin, jumps in the sack with James with virtually no hesitation because she “has a sense about people.” I’ll come back to that in a second. These two are getting horizontal in what feels like every single chapter. And you know the book is boring when you have to start skimming through the love scenes. As for Annora’s Second Sight, it served very little purpose. It was just some random little supernatural element. In what was not a supernatural book.
The character of the dead wife was twisted and turned to suit the story. I thought it was a bit of a stretch to see her through her husband’s eyes and then be torqued so dramatically. The villains were completely one note. Almost all the women were whores (The book’s word, not mine.)
It was a real struggle. Surprisingly, to me anyway, this book was beloved by other readers, at least back in 2008. It has almost 2000 ratings on Goodreads with an average of more than four stars. So maybe your mileage may vary. But I would not recommend this one.

I read this book when it first came out in 2008 and loved it, so I was very happy to win a review copy from NetGalley so that I could reread it. This is the story of James Drummond, the adopted son of Eric and Bethia Murray (Highland Promise), all grown up and with troubles of his own. He was the laird of Dunncraig Keep until he was betrayed by his wife's cousin. Accused of murdering his wife and declared an outlaw, James fled for his life, hiding out for three years. Now he's had enough and is determined to clear his name and regain his home, his lands, and his daughter. He disguises himself as a one-eyed woodcarver to gain access to the keep, where he meets Annora.
Annora MacKay is the poor-relation cousin of Donnell MacKay, the man who stole Dunncraig Keep. She was brought to Dunncraig to care for Meggie, the little girl that Donnell says is his daughter. Her cousin is ruthless and vicious, and Annora does what she can to protect Meggie from him, frequently suffering abuse because of it. The longer she is there, the more suspicious she becomes of just how Donnell acquired the property. These suspicions are reinforced by her ability to sense the feelings of others, and she feels the evil that surrounds Donnell. She soon senses a new emotion in the keep - rage - and it is centered on the woodcarver who has taken up residence there.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between James and Annora. There was no denying the sparks that flew between them from the moment they met, though both tried to ignore them at first. James doesn't want the distraction from his goal of finding proof of his innocence, plus pursuing the attraction could make him vulnerable to discovery. Annora is closely watched by her cousin and his second-in-command, Egan. Egan wants Annora for his own and would kill any man who touched what he considered his "property." But James and Annora can't stay away from each other, especially after James saves her from Egan's advances. James grows to trust Annora, and when she stumbles onto him out of his disguise, he takes her into his confidence. The more time they spend together, the deeper their feelings for each other become, but there are big obstacles to their being together. The biggest, of course, is James's being an outlaw. Another is Annora's conviction that she is not good enough for James, with him being a laird and her being a landless, bastard-born orphan. I loved how James's Murray upbringing made it easy for him to recognize that Annora is his other half, the mate that was destined to be his. They are also responsible for his easy acceptance of her "gift," something that she did not expect at all. I did get a little frustrated at Annora's refusal to believe that James would want her for more than a brief fling.
The storyline of James's search for proof of his innocence was well done, with plenty of tension, twists and turns, and action. Donnell was a villain who was very easy to hate, with his cruelty, selfishness, and deceit. I liked how James and Annora teamed up, with Annora's "gift" and knowledge of both Donnell and James's late wife, Mary, providing new and startling insight into what had gone on. I loved the arrival of Sir Simon Innes and James's brother Tormand, and their intent to assist James. Sir Simon's presence is especially significant. When the danger to Annora becomes too high, James attempts to get her and Meggie to safety, but their escape is thwarted. I was on the edge of my seat from there to the end, as both their lives were in extreme danger. I ached for Annora and everything she went through. I was incredibly impressed with her determination and strength of will in spite of her pain and loved what she was able to do. James's situation was even more dire, and I was glued to the pages during that final confrontation. The resolution was extremely satisfying and brilliantly executed.
The only thing left was for James to win his fair lady. Annora was determined to avoid him and leave as soon as she could. She couldn't bear to see him marry another, and was certain he would marry for wealth and position. James's frustration was obvious, and his brother's teasing made me laugh out loud. James's big moment at the end was sweet and romantic, and definitely worthy of being a Murray. The epilogue was great, with Tormand once again providing both support and torment in James's hour of need.
The secondary characters were terrific, with the best ones being Big Marta and little Meggie. As the longtime cook at Dunncraig, it wasn't surprising that she quickly saw through James's disguise. I loved her support of both James and Annora. Meggie was quite the little piece of work. She was very observant for a five-year-old, but the life she'd lived for the past three years had made her so. I loved her instant connection with James, even without connecting him to her vague memories of her real father. I loved her relationship with Annora, and the obvious love they had for each other. I liked that she wasn't perfect - there were a few instances of more typical childish behavior, but she was never mean or purposely naughty.

Again some really stupid actions make me want to hit my head against the wall!

I had a tough time rating this one. The set-up dragged for me; the middle was quite good, I thought, then the story climaxed with some 30 pages to go and I could not understand why. This last section might have been the worst in the book; for some reason, the author goes off on a long tangent about stained-glass windows (a set-up for another book featuring the hero's brother? Who knows...). Though I was very happy there were no "misunderstandings" and the "big secret" was kept from, for the most part, only the bad guys, I could not believe Ms. Howell resorted to the "I'm not good enough for you" plot device after all the H/h had been through together, and separately, throughout the entire story.
Oh, well ... I believe I bought this book thinking there might be a PN wolf involved, but that was not the case. I would have given three-quarters of the story a solid four stars, but then there was the other one-quarter which would have garnered only two stars, so...an average of three stars it is.

Several years ago I read through all of Hannah Howell's books up to the last few. I remember this one and it has not changed in reading again. A tale of a man who has lost everything and a woman who is caught in a terrible situation. Can they save each other? James lost his wife and child in a fire and to make matters worse, he was accused of murder by Sir Donnell MacKay who then took his castle, Dunncraig Keep and declared James an outlaw. Annora is the poor cousin of MacKay and has come to Dunncraig to care for his daughter. Unfortunately Donnell treated her and his daughter terribly.
James finally comes out of hiding three years later and it determined to find the truth. So he comes in disguise to the castle and everything takes off from there.
Can he rescue his daughter and Annora? Will he be caught and hanged for a crime he did not commit?
As in all of Hannah's stories, this one will keep you on the edge, waiting to find out what happens. The entire Murray Family series is wonderful so don't miss this one!

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) This book was ok definitely not my favorite from this author, and it is also part of along series. So James has left his keep and people after being wrongly accused of killing his wife, so not only does he leave his riches but he leaves his daughter in the hands of the wicked. That is my problem because it took him 3 years, 3 years to come out of hiding and fight for what is his. Then when he is back and still hiding but this time in plain sight since he supposedly has a disguise and all is to be believed that no one can tell. Then he meets and falls in love with Annora who is the one taking care of his daughter, I had no problem that that was happening because they both needed some love, my problem was that he tended to forget why he was there in the first place..Eventually it did pick up, because it did lag a little but ended pretty good.

Sir James Drummond, foster son to the Murray clan, has lost everything, his home, his wife and his child. Three years ago his wife was found burned to death and her cousin Sir Donnell MacKay cried murder, had James declared an outlaw and took over Dunncraig Castle and has told everyone that Margaret (Meggie) is actually his daughter, not James'. But after 3 years on the run, James is ready to return, clear his name and oust Donnell.
Annora MacKay is Donnell's poor, unwanted, illegitimate cousin and was brought to Dunncraig to care for Meggie. Donnell and his friend Egan are brutal men, they rule by fear and have beaten Annora and Meggie numerous times - Annora stays for only one reason, Meggie. She is not sure she believes Donnell is the child's father and is sure he gained the castle by underhanded means. When Donnell hires a woodworker to work at the castle, Annora finds herself drawn to him - James has gain entry to the castle by posing as Rolf the woodworker. He gains Annora's attention because she has a gift, she is an empath and his rage makes her curious, but for some reason, she doesn't fear him.
Rolf is frustrated at his lack of progress and by his ill-timed attraction to Annora, a woman that Egan clearly views as his - much to Annora's disgust. When they both have the same idea to search Donnell's ledger room - they share a kiss and are almost caught by Donnell and Egan. She tells herself to stay away from Rolf, lest she end up like her mother. Later she learns Donnell's plan for Meggie and is more determined than ever to learn Donnell's secrets.
James' attention of Annora has not gone unnoticed and he is warned away by Donnell, but when he comes upon Egan trying to rape her, he intervenes. Things between them escalate and when she overhears Donnell and Egan making plans for Egan to marry her - she runs to Rolf and learns that he is not who she thought he was - he is Sir James! He explains why he has returned and she offers to help him - he does not seem put off by her gift and believes her when she says, she doesn't think his wife Mary was dead when he was outlawed, but is sure she is dead now. He kisses her and things became heated, James claims her as his mate and will do whatever is necessary to keep her.
They try to find out what happened to Mary, but Donnell has covered his tracks well. But the discovery of Mary's journals and the arrival of Sir Symon Innes & Sir Tormand Murray really get the investigation moving. They need more proof, but are running out of time - when Egan again tries to rape Annora, James beats him and is ready to throw away his dream of redemption to save the woman he loves and his child. They run, but are caught, James is take prisoner and Annora is brutally beaten - it seems all is lost, but Annora is not willing to let the man she loves die and forces herself to get help. Will it be enough to save James? Will there be a HEA? Will he still want her once his name is restored?
This is a well written, fast paced book, with a lot of steamy love scenes, a lot of violence (there are triggers for both physical abuse and rape - if these are sensitive issues for you, be warned), action, mystery, really nasty bad guys, great secondary characters and finally a HEA complete with an epilogue. I liked this story, but it is on the violent side and the formal address is not quite right, but all in all, not a bad read. In fact, I read this book when it first came out in 2008, I don't think I ever wrote a review, but I would be hard pressed to say if there was anything different in this re-released edition (other than the cover and in my opinion the new cover is WAY BETTER). This is book 15 in the Murray series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone title and it quietly sets up the next two books in the series.

He gains Annora's attention because she has a gift, she is an empath and his rage makes her curious, but for some reason, she doesn't fear him.
Rolf is frustrated at his lack of progress and by his ill-timed attraction to Annora, a woman that Egan clearly views as his - much to Annora's disgust. When they both have the same idea to search Donnell's ledger room - they share a kiss and are almost caught by Donnell and Egan. She tells herself to stay away from Rolf, lest she end up like her mother. Later she learns Donnell's plan for Meggie and is more determined than ever to learn Donnell's secrets.
James' attention of Annora has not gone unnoticed and he is warned away by Donnell, but when he comes upon Egan trying to rape her, he intervenes. Things between them escalate and when she overhears Donnell and Egan making plans for Egan to marry her - she runs to Rolf and learns that he is not who she thought he was - he is Sir James! He explains why he has returned and she offers to help him - he does not seem put off by her gift and believes her when she says, she doesn't think his wife Mary was dead when he was outlawed, but is sure she is dead now. He kisses her and things became heated, James claims her as his mate and will do whatever is necessary to keep her.
They try to find out what happened to Mary, but Donnell has covered his tracks well. But the discovery of Mary's journals and the arrival of Sir Symon Innes & Sir Tormand Murray really get the investigation moving. They need more proof, but are running out of time - when Egan again tries to rape Annora, James beats him and is ready to throw away his dream of redemption to save the woman he loves and his child. They run, but are caught, James is take prisoner and Annora is brutally beaten - it seems all is lost, but Annora is not willing to let the man she loves die and forces herself to get help. Will it be enough to save James? Will there be a HEA? Will he still want her once his name is restored?
This is a well written, fast paced book, with a lot of steamy love scenes, a lot of violence (there are triggers for both physical abuse and rape - if these are sensitive issues for you, be warned), action, mystery, really nasty bad guys, great secondary characters and finally a HEA complete with an epilogue. I liked this story, but it is on the violent side and the formal address is not quite right, but all in all, not a bad read. In fact, I read this book when it first came out in 2008, I don't think I ever wrote a review, but I would be hard pressed to say if there was anything different in this re-released edition (other than the cover and in my opinion the new cover is WAY BETTER). This is book 15 in the Murray series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone title and it quietly sets up the next two books in the series.

This book frustrated me from the very beginning, mostly because I've read the story of James' foster parents Eric & Bethia Murray. James is Bethia's nephew and she rescued him after her too-trusting sister & her husband were murdered. Then Bethia & Eric went to considerable lengths to reclaim & hold Dunncraig for James & vowed to raise him to be less openly trusting & easy to fool than his parents had been, to ensure he wouldn't fall to the same fate. Then this book opens & James has done the exact same thing as his parents: lost his child & his home & rather than gather his powerful family & their allies & take it back like the Murrays had done before, he runs away and hides for 3 years. So, clearly I was frustrated to no end within the 1st few chapters, despite the rather feeble explanations for why James went into hiding rather than fighting back immediately. He completely failed his men & his people, then after 3 years of hiding (where was his family in all of this?) he decides he's had enough & will infiltrate the castle to clear his name & reclaim what's his. There he meets Annora, who has been caring for his daughter and who is the cousin of his enemy. The story lags a bit in the middle while James is distracted from his original purpose by his growing love for Annora. In the last ten or so chapters I finally got into this book and didn't want to put it down. Overall, I was pleased with the ending & will continue to read this author/series and I recommend this one.

Annora has a gift, she can sense others’ emotions and it does often help her to keep herself and Meggie out of danger.
Annora soon comes to believe that there is more to the new woodcarver (James/Rolf) than meets the eye. Once she discovers his secret she works to help him. As they work together and their attraction grows, things get more and more dangerous for both of them.
I loved watching James and Annora’s journey into love and their HEA. But, I didn’t understand why his huge and powerful Murray family hadn’t already done more to help him. Yes, I understand that he asked them not to because he feared for their safety and that a couple of them still tried and were almost found out – but – they just did basically nothing and left little Meggie with the monster that was Donnell.

The Murrays and their family clans find the most interesting people. James and Annora had to fight for the right to be together. James a wanted man for the murder of his wife. Annora waned a home, and someone to love. They found each other. James trying to clear his name and Annora staying out of hands of her wicked cousin and his henchmen. They will face everything and everyone to be together.

Framed for the murder of his wife and cast out as a fugitive, losing his title and his daughter in the process, the hero schemes to find a way to clear his name. He dons an eye patch to cover up his remarkable eyes, dyes his hair and pretends to be a servant. Allowed into the keep once again, he meets the heroine. Bastard cousin to the man who ruined his life, she's beaten daily and forced into betrothal with the new lairds evil second in command. The only reason she stays in such a place is for the sake of her young charge, whom she is a nanny to. Daughter to the previous laird, the little girl is used as a bargaining chip for the enemy to gain power and nothing more. Almost immediately, the heroine finds out about the hero's true identify and vows to help him find out the mystery of his wife's death and help him recapture his lairdship.
This was a nice boo but a basic book. Nothing was particularly remarkable about it and it did seem to follow such a played-out formula that as the reader, I knew what was going to happen 10 chapters in advance. The plot and the characters have been written about so many times that it's boring and predicable. I did like the hero and his possessive manly attraction to the female he knows in his heart is his fated mate. I did like the heroine as she's capable and strong in the face of such hardship and that she could leave such torment any time she wanted but her love for the little girl kept her there. But as I said, it was so routinely mapped out, what each character was doing to do or say or what was going to happen next that I didn't feel any spark within. But yes, there is a paranormal element laced throughout the book. The heroine can 'feel' others emotions, like a sort of empathy. Also, she has the occasional vision. I was rather disappointed with this book as I love so many of this authors stories.

Bastard-born Annora MacKay is living at said estate, having been brought in to act as caretaker of the little girl, whom her cousin claims is his own daughter. She sees her cousin's cruelty and dishonesty and works hard to shield little Meggie as best she can, while fending off the lecherous advances of his creepy second in command.
The both of them have reason to try to find out what really happened to Meggie's mom.
Some good chemistry and danger keeps the story interesting even when you kinda see some things coming.

Laird James Drummond was falsely accused of murdering his wife and had to flee for his life, leaving his keep and his young daughter in the clutches of the plot's mastermind, Sir Donnell MacKay. Now three years later, he returns home in disguise, determined to take back what is his, and meets MacKay's virtuous cousin Annora, who has taken over the care of his daughter Meggie.
Great chemistry between Annora and James. There is no real internal conflict, which is refreshing. Instead, there are multiple external threats. The epilogue is one of the best I've ever read--perfectly sweet and satisfying.

Continuing her Murray family saga, Highland Wolf focuses on James Drummond, the son of Bethia and Eric (a child who was fostered by the Murray family). At first, I did not recognize James' character, but looking at a family tree of the Murray family put is all together for me. As with the other books in this series, I found this story an easy, enjoyable read overall w/ memorable characters. I was pleasantly suprised by the constant action and little plot twist/turns. I am def looking forward to the next book in the series. I would def recommend this book/series to fans/readers of historical romance.

I have only read one of the Murray Family series before this one and it was a later book in their saga. I picked this one because I thought from the title, it was a Highland Shifter story. It was not. I still enjoyed this story. I was not familiar with James from earlier books, but fell in love with him immediately. I liked that Annora and James got together fairly early in the story. I liked that the bad guys were truly evil. Meggie was okay but not real. I grew to like Annora when she made her walk to the village. I will read more of the Murrays.

I have read so many Hannah Howell books. She is such a wonderful writer!!! Read this book on Oyster it took me a day and I absolutely loved it. It brngs me back to when James was a baby and Bethia trying to save him. This time James is trying to save not only himself, but also his daughter, Annora and his people. James is wanted as an outlaw, he is accused of killing his wife Mary. James has been on the run for 3 years and says he us done running, it's time to find the proof of his innocence. This book is just as thrilling as her others!!!! A+++

James, foster son to Bethia and Eric Drummond (her sister's son she saved from the man who killed his parents,) brother to Gillyanne, et al. I really liked this one a lot, although I had a hard time believing that his family would have let him become outlawed and stay that way for 3 years no matter how well she explained it away. However, it did make for an interesting plotline: a man sneaking back into his own house to oust the murderer of his wife.

It wasn’t until I started reading my recent NetGalley ARC, I picked up on the fact this is a re-release, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends. So check your shelves and memory banks for the previous 1/8/2007 first publication. If you are a fan of this popular Scottish romance author, you might have verra well already read this tale already.
One handsome, hot for revenge, and just as eager to claim what was taken from him, Laird James Drummond (aka Rolf Levengeance) dons a disguise and master plan to earn his honor, freedom, and clan back. An unexpected obstacle though is a verra bonny lass known as Annora, the loving caregiver of his young daughter, who was also stolen from him. Knowing her abusive, evil cousin was likely behind all the allegations James claims only bonds this couple even more closer together.
No, you don’t have to speak French to pick up on the irony of the last name the author choose for James coverup identity. I had a momentary eye-roll but then just went with it, folks.
What was uncomfortable for me to witness was James giving in to his blinding attraction for Annora and becoming biblical with her around 40% into. Knowing it was going to cause problems for her, sensing her hesitation but continuing to seduce her left me rather unsettled. I wanted to tap him on the shoulder and say, “Hey, I think the lady is trying to tell you this isn’t such a good idea right now, buddy. Back off for now. Save it for later.” However, after that first smexy encounter Annora seemed to be all on board for a sneaky, behind closed doors affair, regardless of thinking they would never likely have a HEA. So, really, if she was OK with it, who am I to be overly concerned, right? Good thing for her James was determined from then on to keep her forever.
Another silver lining is we find James was not in love with his deceased wife, who’s past history became pivotal to the storyline.
At 50% into it, the repetitive, lengthy conversations among a growing list of cameo appearing characters popped up rehashing the same topics in thick Scottish brogue. It started to keep the plot from progressing, folks. From then on it mostly moved at a snail’s pace until the inevitable, nail biting, smackdown conclusion. Not that I didn’t enjoy seeing the bad guys get what was coming to them, it just caused me to zone out at times until the showdown finally started to happen.
Overall, I did like the main couple and were glad they got their HEA.

Here we see James, former laird charged with the murder of his wife, trying to prove his innocence with the help of his enemy’s cousin.
James is a hero without big surprise in character as in behavior. He’s proud, a bit stubborn, and quickly attracted to Annora. He was raised in the Murray family where they believe we recognize our mate as soon as we see her/him, so he admits to himself fast and without big difficulties what he feels for the heroine. The point that annoyed me is the fact he spent three years hidden after being accused of murder when he’s supposed to come from a very solid and powerful family. There’s just a sentence at one time saying he didn’t want to involve them for them not to have problems. I don’t know about you, but if I was falsely accused and condemned to death I would probably use all possible means instead of hiding in a cave. But the story would have been different.
Annora is an endearing heroine who had an unpleasant life. Illegitimate, she’s been the whipping girl for the different family members who took her in, et for the last three years she’s caring for the daughter of her cousin who has become the new laird of James’ clan. She thinks she’s weak and useless when she’s in fact strong and tenacious. We’re said she can feel the feelings of people around her, but it’s not really used in the story and has no real utility. She also thinks that as a bastard she has no value and so she repeats herself often she will leave James when he takes back his title as she’s not good enough for him. I hate this thinking in romance.
The attraction between them is very fast, they yield to it quickly, trust the other quickly too, and admit internally feeling love for the other too fast when they don’t really know each other yet.
The little girl has a behavior and a way of speaking that seems too mature for a five-years-old kid. The bad guys are especially mean, and the book’ general atmosphere is dark and violent. The heroine is beaten often by her cousin, and she’s almost raped several times by her cousin’s right-hand man who decided to marry her. There are also regular allusion to physical abuses and murders done by the cousin and his men.
What’s more, just like in the other book I read (but I had forgotten this detail unfortunately) the author wants so much to emphasize the Scottish accent that the dialogs are seasoned with unusual words difficult to understand even read out loud for someone who doesn’t know them: ken, ye, dinnae, weel, verra, ne’er, …, and so there are sentences for which we guess the meaning instead of understanding it as in "Nay, we ken weel that that would be a verra bad thing". That’s a big contrast with the story parts which are written “without accent.”
The good side is that the gradual revelations about the conspiracy that led to James’ accusation are well-thought and interesting. All in all a pleasant book if we disregard the decoding of the accent but it won’t go down in history.

What’s more, just like in the other book I read (but I had forgotten this detail unfortunately) the author wants so much to emphasize the Scottish accent that the dialogs are seasoned with unusual words difficult to understand even read out loud for someone who doesn’t know them: ken, ye, dinnae, weel, verra, ne’er, …, and so there are sentences for which we guess the meaning instead of understanding it as in "Nay, we ken weel that that would be a verra bad thing". That’s a big contrast with the story parts which are written “without accent.”
The good side is that the gradual revelations about the conspiracy that led to James’ accusation are well-thought and interesting. All in all a pleasant book if we disregard the decoding of the accent but it won’t go down in history.

A fast moving riveting, romantic, action filled, suspenseful, adventure, that I absolutely loved. It has so many twists, turns, including ups and downs, that readers will be holding to the edge of their seats! I was holding my breath with anticipation, not knowing what could possibly happen next!
A definite book Howell fans won’t want to miss. I cannot recommend it enough! A wonderful autumn read.

He should have listened to his instincts but he let his sweet wife sway him to allow he kinsman to visit and now he'd been declared an outlaw and a murderer.
This was the second time someone had coveted his lands and right now they were in his keep ruling over his people.
Annora hated her cousin he'd asked for someone to care for a child and their family sent her; she knew they hated her and this proved it. But she adored the little girl she was in charge of .
He had to admit his daughter looked happy and healthy even if she said not one word while she'd been in the shop.
Annora know she'd over step her boundaries with her cousin she needed to be careful or she just might find herself on the wrong side of his fist.
He'd been searching through stacks of ledgers trying to see what that fool had been up to when he spotted the woman Annora.
It wasn't to long before they were intrupted thinking quickly he hid them in a nice little hidey-hole that only he knew about.
They could hear the two men arguing about there dasterly behavior and the other clans people they'd allowed in the keep.
Annora despised the way Egan insisted on trying to persuade her to become his new lady however she'd been grateful when Rolf rescued her from the idiot.
He had to admit it felt good to tell her the truth about himself and that fact that he was an innocent man.
James knew persueing the lass might not seem like the best thing to do but he didn't want to let the perfect opportunity pass them by.
Annora reminded Meggie she wasn't to wander around outside by herself until she should her what she had in her hands.

However things didn't go as they'd planned an her she was in the clutches of her cousin and his idiot right hand man.

I did it again, I requested a book in a lengthy series when I had not read any of the previous books. Not only that, but this is a re-release of a book published in 2008. Well, it proved to be a good decision. I had no problem following this story, in fact it can be read as a standalone story.
Sir James Drummond, foster son to the Murray clan, has lost everything. He was the Laird of Dunncraig Keep, the father of a young daughter and a married man, who was betrayed by his wife. Three years ago his wife was found burned to death and her cousin Sir Donnell MacKay accused James of her murder. He was declared an outlaw and Donnell took over Dunncraig Castle while James went into hiding. He has told everyone that Margaret (Meggie) is his daughter, and has brought his illegitimate sister Annora to the keep to be her nursemaid. James, has decided that it is time to return, clear his name and reclaim Dunncaig Keep.
This is a well written, fast paced book, with more steamy love scenes than I am normally comfortable with. There is also some violence, abuse and rape, so if these are triggers for you, you might want to pass on this book. I enjoyed the characters in the story. Meggie was a precocious young thing who seemed a lot older than her 4 years. Annora was a devoted woman, who was trying to keep Meggie safe as well as keep away from some of the randy men in the castle. Donnell and his men were written as characters to detest and that was achieved quite well. Of course James was the hero. He was willing to get caught and sacrifice himself to reclaim his daughter as well as bring peace, fortune and comfort back to his home. I found that there was a good mix of action, love, mystery, deceit and characters to make this an enjoyable story. Of course there is going to be a happily ever after for James, but how will that play out? Read this story to find out. I had read this book after it was released previously so I was curious if it held up tot he test of time.
James was accused of killing his wife and leaves until he can return to find proof of his innocence. Three years later he returns to clear his name, claim his heritage his daughter. He returns as Rolf a woodcarver whose beautiful work attracts Donnell's attention.
Donnell McKay has claimed James' land and title. He is only interested in the riches he can accumulate and spend, treating himself like a King while the lands deteriorate and people go hungry. He brings in his bastard born cousin Annora to care for Meggie, a child he is claiming is his. Annora knows how cruel he is and her goal is to care for and protect Meggie and stay clear of Donnell and his first, Egan.
When "Rolf" and Annora meet, they know their lives will never be the same again....
Can James get to the truth, clear his name, get his daughter and lands back? Will Annora be a part of his future?
I loved James and Annora's story! I think I may have enjoyed their story more this time than the first time I read it! James was hurting as he realized how Donnell had abused the land and his people. Donnell was also making enemies with neighboring clans as he raided them. He also worried about Annora as he watched how she was treated by her cousin.
Annora is a wonderful young woman and truly cares for Meggie. Her cousin isolates her from everyone so she doesn't hear just how evil her cousin is. When she meets "Rolf" she know she will be special in her life, even if temporary because of her lineage.
I could see this couple being together many, many years. They are both smart and caring people. This is definitely a good read!

Wow, another amazing book by Hannah Howell! Once again this book drew me in from the first page on to the very last. I was in for a rollercoaster of emotions, being upset, swooning, crying, being scared and - so much more.
Annora and James were a wonderful couple and when I wasn't fearing for their lives or their health or...everything else, I was cheering them on and hoping for them to find love and happiness. Both of them were much in need of both. With Donnell MacKay and his ruthless hold on the keep that he stole from James years ago set against them, with his cruelty towards each and every one who speaks up against him, things start to get really tough, especially when Donnell's man Egan joins the party and wants to marry Annora...whetehr she wants him or not.
James has been on the run for years but with his daughter and his love's lives and happiness at stake, he can't lose, he has to win back his keep and clear his name!
An amazing story, captivating and brilliantly told, Highland Wolf is definitely one of those books that I'll read again from time to time - like most of the books by the author, actually. I haven't found a book by her that I didn't love. This book is a stand-alone even though it is part of a series. You don't have to read the other books in this series in order to understand it but you'll probably end up reading them anyway because they are just so good.

Sir James Drummond is a wanted man for murdering his wife. He has been on the run, in hiding for three years for crime he did not commit because a disreputable man wanted what he had. James has had enough, he is ready to take back his property, but more important to him, his five year old daughter. He has a plan, a plan to enter Dunncraig in disguise to find proof of the villain, Donnell's guilt. Only be did not plan on Annora. Annora is Donnell's cousin, though raised as a lady, She is illegitimate. She acts as nursemaid to James' daughter, Meggie. Annora and James are attracted to each other almost immediately. Can James find the evidence he needs to free himself or will Donnell and his henchman catch him first? The run lays a great storyline, but then I have never read a Hannah Howell book that was not great. I love revisiting this era and the wonderful Murray family (yes, James is an adopted Murray). I did read this when it was first out in print. It was a delight to reread and well worth the time.

I enjoyed this story a lot. It never had a boring moment. The author did a good job in keeping this reader entertained.
Highland Wolf tells the story of James Drummond and Annora McKay. James is an outcast due to being accused of murdering his wife. Annora is the cousin of the man who took Jame's place as laird. She is brought in to take care of Jame's daughter. When he gains entrance to his home under false pretenses James and Annora meet and an instant attraction begins. They were very devoted to each other. Jame's even states that she is the mate that he was waiting/looking for. This is my favorite part of the book when he says this to Annora.
This story depicts violence against women and children, but those who committed such violent acts are punished at the end.
Highland Wolf is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone book.
