Max Ronson is a complete and utter enigma of a man and is was trying to get to the bottom of why he is the way he is, that had me hooked on this story.

For he is central to everything but we only get hints as to what may make him react the way he does to situations. He runs the Hub, a shared workspace environment, on a turkey farm which his brother runs. He as assembled a small group of people to work in the hub, some of which may, or may not be in on whatever is is Max could be up to!

And yet it is August who is our main character, she's a crime author and seeing how she thinks is fabulous. She also has a heart of gold and starts volunteering in one of the situations that it really takes a certain kind of person who deal with.

There are a plethora of tough topics dealt with in this book, it is gritty, it is real, but with Nicola Mays underlying warmth, empathy and at times humour.

It took me a while to get properly into this story, but once I did I was intrigued and appreciated the initial build up. There is a lot going on within the book, with a whole variety of wonderful storylines. And it was so nice to see such a varied selection of people at the Hub who may never have met otherwise but are clearly a close knit group.

It's another winner from May, as she once again provides us a fabulous story, that I loved so much.

Thank you to the author for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I did not enjoy this book. I have read a book by this author before and thought I would try again to see if it were a better fit. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed again by a story full of characters I disliked and confused about the direction the plot was going in.

Firstly, I could not determine whether this was supposed to be a drama, a romance (steamy or otherwise), or cosy mystery. I am all for having a variety of genres but this felt more erratic and jumping around. I liked the idea of August re-emerging into the world after a horrendous break-up and was keen to see how she interacted with her colleagues. However, apart from a few scenes featuring a crazy sandwich lady, it all felt rather lack-lustre and August just seems to drift between home and her new work environment. Her office colleagues are all a bit bizarre and eclectic but I don’t think they were very memorable.

It is clear from the beginning that there is an attraction between August and Max. It takes a while for their connection to be properly established, which I was kind of expecting, but I really disliked their negative banter which verged on being quite cruel. It is only until a threatening situation arises do they accept their feelings but I was kind of hoping for something a bit happier than what the writer presented.

August and Max were not very likeable characters. I loved the comparison to Jason Statham and could vividly picture this smouldering, cheeky and argumentative protagonist. However, I really disliked how often he is described as smoking; it is an old-fashioned and unappealing feature of a character and it made me realise how infrequently I see this in books. I wish May had omitted this part of Max because it was really off-putting. Furthermore, I disliked August’s morals and principles, finding her loose behaviour and attitude towards her friend with benefits to be selfish and indulgent. Yes, I get the point that May is trying to make with August’s character, but I think the manner in which August acts could have been softer and a reflection of the side we see when she volunteers with the local charity helpline.

All in all, there were plenty of elements that I liked about the story, but not the way they were put together! The sandwich lady was entertaining and I think there was a bit more scope to develop her character further. I was intrigued by the turkey farm, August healing her broken heart and her place in the charity, but the way the plot developed meant I was less engaged than I hoped. I don’t think it helped that I was repelled by the central characters and as this is now the second book by this author that I haven’t really enjoyed, I think this is a sign from the literary gods that it is best that we part ways.

With thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Nicola May never disappoints!

Another fantastic book by Nicola May, she always manages to pack so many subjects into her books. I loved The Hub concept, so up to date/current and such an eclectic mix of characters.

When August is dumped just a few weeks before her wedding by the man she has spent the last seven years of her life with she decides to move out of London to Futtingbrook with Prince Harry, her cat, and next door to her sister. August is a successful author so is able to work from home and doesn’t really have a social life.

August is quite set in her new ways, just beginning to get over her fiancé, when her sister convinces her to try working from a new office complex - The Hub - which is based in a barn conversion of a turkey farm. She decides maybe it would be a good idea to get out and meet people and this could be a good start.

Jason Statham lookalike Max Ronson runs the hub with just a handful of one man businesses already moved in. He is a strange one and clearly has a lot of secrets. What is going on with the lorry delivering loads of boxes to the barn? Who is the woman with the Porsche he was arguing with?

Of course this being romantic fiction, August falls for Max and it appears the feeling is mutual but he keeps pushing her away with his snarky comments and rudeness. I can’t believe she kept going back for more as he wasn’t a particularly likeable character, but she saw something behind the mask.

As well as trying to write her next book, August decides to volunteer for a crisis telephone line. One of the phone calls she receives changes her life.

I enjoyed the office banter and especially the character of the cook, ‘hot, not or cold’ Beryl who unfortunately tends to make inedible meals but is such a strong character.

I was intrigued to find out what Max was hiding, as was August with her crime writers enquiring mind!

I fell in love with Nicola’s writing when I read the Ferry Lane Market series. I enjoyed The Hub and look forward to reading more from Nicola.

This was fun and easy to read feel good romcom. August Saunders has recently returned from London and come home to Futtingdon (be careful how you pronounce it LOL :) ) having had her imminent wedding called off by her now ex-fiance. A mystery writer, August needs some time out to lick her wounds and also try complete her latest book.

She meets the mysterious and at times volatile Max Ronson who rents out office space in the HUB a he has in a refurbished barn at the family's turkey farm. Sparks fly when they meet but August is frustrated because she can't break through Max's defenses and find out what he is hiding.

Life is never dull especially when August discovers there may be a real life mystery to solve after all.

I would firstly just like to say a big thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources who very kindly forwarded me an arc copy of this book, for my Kindle, in return for my honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book it was so easy to read and I found myself turning the pages faster and faster until there wasn’t any left to read!!
The characters were all very down-to-earth and real and I really enjoyed finding out all of their stories.
The storyline flowed really nicely and touched on some tough and real subjects but they were also written really well.
Overall, this was a wonderful read and I will most definitely be coming back for much more from this author…….

I've enjoyed a few of Nicola May's books and was intrigued to read this one.
I wasn't disappointed!
August is an author with a bit of personal history that she is trying to put behind her. Moving back to where she grew up, from the busyness of London, she finds it hard to engage in her writing until she is introduced to The Hub and all its inhabitants or users.
And some of those slowly become good friends (and more).
There is plenty to laugh about in this book and some quite sad bits, but the story is well rounded, and the characters are so colourfully written that they lift off the page and dance around in front of you.
I want to see a turkey farm now, too, by the way!

Firstly, I have to admit that I was chuckling happily before I even started reading mainly when I read the back blurb and that first line; ‘One Turkey Farm, Five Wild Colleagues and Barn Full of Mystery’ there is something about that one line which appealed to me, so I was very excited to read it, and I even though it took me a little longer to fully get into the story, I have to say it didn’t disappoint by the end.

I have read a few Nicola May books before this one, not as many as I really should have, I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed her light and cheerful writing and even better this one has glorious hints of mystery – always a win, win in my book!

August leaves London behind and returns back to her roots in Wiltshire after being jilted. She isn’t in the best place, hurt, lonely and lost, unsure of where to go from here. Her writing has come to a halt as she has lost all inspiration for her stories. A break away from it all is just the thing, so after seeing an advert for a shared workspace in a barn she thinks this will be just the thing she needs to get inspiration and finally get those precious words on the page.

What she didn’t expect was an inspiration to literally write and for her to have a real-life mystery to solve, perfect she get her hands well and truly dirty get inspiration, the books can writies itself. The only issue will be her lust for mystery and wanting to uncover all of The Hub’s own secrets be the cold water on the fire of a budding romance.

Tough one, but I’m not telling you what happens, you’ll have to visit The hUb yourself and find out!

The Hub is a marvellous mystery romance, it starts off a little slow for my liking but the pacing soon picks up pace especially when August starts delving deeper into the secrets of The Huba and the glorious mysterious Max.

I really enjoyed The Hub, it’s got a great mix of intrigue, mystery a little mischief and all the charming feel-good factor that we love about Nicola May’s books, with all that is going on in the world at the minute we need feel-good stories like this to transport us away for a few hours!

This is not my favourite of May’s books, but I’m glad I finished it. I really liked August’s sister and her family and the chapters that focused on August’s relationship with her family, and did actually quite like August. However I just couldn’t like Max. I found some of their “banter” quite harsh and cruel, and I wished that the breakdown of his character and the things he was hiding would have happened a little sooner as it kind of felt like he was this negative character for so long then *snap* he’s nice now. And I know a lot of the negative parts of his character were due to alcoholism and I’m glad that was addressed, but I found his behaviour was kind of swept under the rug and that can give a bad impression towards toxic and potentially abusive relationships - that they’re not accountable because of their addiction and once they get help they’ll be kind and logical and all of the issues will be gone. I did like the addition of his ex and him being financially abused by her, abuse of men by women isn’t something that’s explored enough. And I loved Ade (does help that I coincidentally have a puppy with the same name) and his family. Ade is such a wonderful man! I also wished that some of the side characters had been explored a little more, as they were quite two dimensional, especially Jonah and Tyler. I loved to see an LGBTQ character and a POC character in her book, as the later especially has been very lacking for me, but they felt quite token. The places in the book where their families and significant others were mentioned or incorporated were great, but I would have loved if they had been closer and just a little more from them like we are with Cat, Sean, Ade, Max and Darcy. I also loved the addition of the suicide hotline, and how the topic was incorporated into the plot without being romanticised as it so often is. Overall an enjoyable read

🖥️When this email dropped into my inbox I only saw that it was a blog tour for @author_nicola May before signing up immediately for it.
Having previously read Welcome to Ferry Lane Market and falling in love her writing I was excited and wishful that I would be accepted. As luck would have it, that email pinged through, I was accepted, and the cherry on the top being my fellow Bookstagram friend was also accepted too so we decided to buddy read it together.

🖥️This story was a standalone and it was super easy to get into. August is a crime author who is missing the workplace and is needing some mental stimulation in the form of office banter. She stumbles upon the Hub where other solo business owners can work, share ideas and office gossip. I immediately warmed to the main character of August and her friends at the Hub were so well written I could see them in real life. I have to say that Beryl was my favourite though and she had me chuckling at her lunchtime outbursts.
Max Ronson however, was a complicated multidimensional character which gave both me and my buddy reader @laureads2021 much to discuss. What was his back story and why he was doing/reacting in that way? And what better place to base the Hub than in a turkey farm! 🦃

🖥️A lot of chick lit/romance novels tend to be sweet and saccharin, and there is a place for them but what I love about Nichola May's writing is that her characters have flaws and the story might be grittier and tackle sensitive subjects but she does so with a realism that I like.

🖥️A modern love story for the technological/post pandemic age of lone working. Loved it.

I have been a big fan of Nicola May's books for many years now. I love her writing style and how she manages to tackle sensitive subjects with delicacy but also adds humour to her stories. This book was no different, with the main character August renting a space in The Hub to write her book. August is a likeable character and has many strings to her bow. She is an author, but while at The Hub, she also builds friendships and helps out with a local charity.

The owner of The Hub is not so likeable, but his idea of renting out this Hub was a great idea, and it is a place that I would like to work at, too, if I could. Snacks, lunches, and a field full of turkeys! makes the place feel relaxing and intriguing at the same time.

There is a wide range of different characters in this book, which I feel is also a trait of this author. There is always someone to root for and someone else to wonder about! The love interest in this book for me was not charming or curious to me, and this is why I rated it as I did.

May's admirable skill for me in her novels is being able to write about sensitive subjects while still making her books fun. This one does exactly that.
Another great book from Nicola May.

Title: The Hub

Author: Nicola May

Rating: ★★★★

When jilted crime writer August Saunders returns from the hustle and bustle of London to the quiet charm of rural Wiltshire, she finds herself uninspired and adrift. Seeking to reignite her creative spark, she stumbles upon an ad for a shared workspace in a converted barn.

At the Hub, August encounters an eclectic mix of colleagues that breathe life into this charming rural setting. Among the ill-equipped gym and inedible catering, we meet a delightful cast: a matchmaker more invested in her own romantic adventures, and a TikToker with a mysterious nocturnal side hustle. The quirky ensemble creates a vibrant backdrop for the unfolding mystery.

The heart of the intrigue lies with Max Ronson, the handsome yet volatile owner of the Hub. His evasiveness about his past and the secrets he might be hiding on the premises propel August into detective mode. Her curiosity not only drives the plot but also sets the stage for a potential romance that has readers eagerly turning pages to see if sparks will fly or fizzle out.

Nicola May expertly blends mischief and mystery in this fast-paced rural romp. The setting of Futtingbrook Farm quickly becomes as beloved and iconic as her previous locales like Ferry Lane Market and Cockleberry Bay. The build-up is engaging, drawing readers into a world brimming with lively storylines and dynamic characters.

The diversity of the Hub's occupants adds a rich layer to the narrative, each character contributing to the story's wholesomeness. From the laugh-out-loud antics to the tender moments of connection, the varied personalities make the tale whole and deeply enjoyable. It's a fun, easy-to-read romcom that leaves you feeling good long after you’ve turned the last page.

Nicola May’s writing is refreshingly realistic, her stories imbued with a sense of authenticity that resonates with readers. The element of mystery woven throughout keeps you engaged, ensuring there's never a dull moment. The Hub is a delightful read that cements Nicola May as a new favourite author for me. Her ability to craft engaging, feel-good stories with a touch of intrigue is unparalleled.

Whether you're a fan of romantic comedies, mysteries, or simply love a good rural setting, The Hub offers a little something for everyone. Dive into this delightful story and join August Saunders as she navigates the quirky world of the Hub, where every corner holds a new surprise and every character has a story worth discovering.
