“Make the economy scream” - Richard Nixon, 1970On September 11th, 1973, the Chilean Army led by Augusto Pinochet staged a coup that resulted in the bombing of the Presidential Palace, the suicide of the democratically elected president, and the installment of a brutal dictatorship. The CIA, Henry Kissinger, and Richard Nixon were the architects of this plan. They devised a strategy to create enough economic instability in Chile to be conducive to a coup. To this end, they authorized spending over $10 million to fund right-wing candidates, spread propaganda against Allende, pay workers to strike, and bribe journalists. Additionally, they persuaded multinational companies and foreign banks to cut investments in Chile, exacerbating the economic fear.
