This story is a tangled mess of good intentions, circumstance, curiosity, lies and deception. It has a ‘seize the moment because the alternative is so much worse’ vibe that really drew me in.
Shocked as she is at first, Emily really has no other choice than to plow ahead, try to anticipate his moves and hope for the best. These two are well-matched - she’s very cunning and observant, but he’s persistent and patient. Matthew goes from surprised and amused to possessive and very protective. I must say, he handles the whole situation with great flair and thoughtfulness, and it was a joy watching these two fall in love for real.
And FYI, he’s no innocent lamb; he to has a few skeletons in his closet.
An unusual second chance romance with a captivating plot, strong characters, a scarred hero, a cornered heroine, wonderful tension and restraint, some good steam, naughty and playful with a nice dash of drama, and a runaway happy ending with a thrilling twist.

When Captain Matthew Leland returned from the dead to surprise his family at Madingley Court, he ends up being the one surprised when he is introduced to his wife, a woman who seems vaguely familiar, but who is most definitely not his wife. But rather than call her out, he decides to play along with her lie until he figures out what she is up to. What he doesn’t count on is falling in love with her and wanting to make his fake marriage real. But his “wife” isn’t the only one with secrets.
Emily Grey met Matthew when he saved her from the sinking ship that robbed her of her entire family. He was shipping off to India, but kindly helped her get settled after the accident and even offered the assistance of his family before he left. Of the three books in the series, this book has the best “story”, it is a well-written, nicely paced book featuring really likable characters with lots of secrets and a whole lot of chemistry! I read this book when it was first published years ago and it has stood the test of time, because it was every bit as enjoyable to me now as it was back then! This is the third book in the series, but it could be read as a standalone title with no problems. If you like secrets, steamy interludes, characters determined to best each other, and a happy ending, this book is for you!

This book was just meh & unmemorable, I dunno why I even bothered to find a copy. I was actually itching to switch to my other TBR books the entire time I was reading it ‘cuz it’s the anti-thesis of riveting. The only thing that sticks out like a sore thumb throughout the book is the H/H “gaped” / “gaping.” It’s a bad sign when I focus on inconsequential stuff instead of the H/H’s dynamics ‘cuz they’re flat as a homemade pancake. Suffice it to say that if some potential player out there tried to post for GOSM, it’d be a freebie point =)~. I’m normally intrigued by resourceful / audacious heroines who’d do desperate things in dire straits, but I couldn’t care less for the heroine’s predicament. H/H’s relationship from the get-go is based on dishonesty. He pretends to have amnesia & doesn’t recall having a wife, which is super convenient for the heroine ‘cuz she’s being blackmailed. W/ the over-inflated font & space, if I had bought this @ full price, I’d have felt cheated by the paper-thin plot, main & 2ndary characters & villain. Even a Harlequin historical woulda had more substance than this 372-page book. The hero feels like he gets duped not once, but twice, thanx to duplicitous wives. @ the v. end there’s a line where she says to him that honesty is so important in a relationship & she vows he’ll always have that from her. I don’t think so, not w/ her not-so-pristine track record. The hero shoulda said buhbye @ the 1st opportunity, even tho’ his gullible family adores her, she ain't worth it.

I’ll be honest and say I picked up this book because of it’s beautiful front and back cover.
It was an interesting premise but somehow the reveal fell flat for me. She lied to him and he knew from the very beginning and yet accepted it as long as he slept with her. Nah!!

This was a good, fun read. The pace was good, there was a good sense of time and place. The characters were well-developed and they didn't spend too much time in introspection, or drooling over each other. The secondary characters were better than average.
There were some moments when Emily's 'sweet' nature made me roll my eyes. But she had backbone enough to keep my interest.
I also appreciated the lower level of 'heat' - I thought the author did a good job of keeping Emily and Matthew out of bed - while preserving the tension between them.
While Matthew's point of view dominated the story, important details from his past, his injuries and his relationship, appeared to have little impact on his present.
Still, the writing was strong and the story better than average.

Very blah. I spent the entire time I was reading it wishing it was over. Very disappointing - it's my first time reading this author's books so I'm not sure if I'll ever give her another glance after this one.

Definitely my favorite of the series. I loved this story and I loved this couple. Matthew and Emily were just so precious to me and I thoroughly enjoyed their journey to happily ever after.
The beginning of the book just had me laughing in delight. I mean Matthew walks in expecting to find his family shocked that he's still alive...and then he receives the shock of his life by discovering he has a "wife" he never really married! I really didn't understand why Matthew went along with this ruse, but where would the story be if he didn't, right? You just had to laugh and honestly, I think there were moments where Matthew was trying not to laugh at the humor in the whole situation. How he found this funny, I'll never know...but that's the kind of person Matthew is. His past has changed him. He found life to be to serious and his trying to live a life free of pain. He's attracted to risk...and pretending to be married to Emily while trying to figure out her motives is a risk he's willing to take. But to Matthew this serious mission is a chance for adventure and a chance to have some fun.
Emily was definitely brave. How she thought she could get away with ruse once Matthew came back was beyond me. But she never gave in and she was going to see this through no matter what. I was amazed at how quickly her lies came together, how she always had an answer prepared with no hesitation. She was tough and she needed that tough exterior as the life she found with the Leland's was threatened by Matthew's return. You mostly saw it through Matthew's eyes, but it was so great to see how Emily had maneuvered her way into the hearts of his entire family. Even her interactions with the village just made you realize she was unique and she was special.
Despite my love for this novel...the one thing I didn't understand was the crazy addition of Matthew's first wife. Callen tried to use this as some sort of plot device for Matthew to compare both relationships, but it was really odd. Mainly because by the time it was fully explained, it was too late to really process how this affected his life and his choices. It didn't even make sense. This first marriage was absolutely glossed over, barely given any consideration and when Matthew explained it you would think it would have played a bigger part in the novel. I definitely didn't understand why this was just thrown in at the end.
I loved that Daniel/Grace and Christopher/Abigail made and appearance! It was an absolute delight to see the cousins (Matthew, Daniel and Christopher) reunite and see them discuss how much their crazy lives have changed. I was definitely smiling through those scenes.
So obviously I just loved this story. I loved the characters, I loved the humor and I loved how their romance developed. As with most romance, you see how it's usually an issue of trust, and Never Marry A Stranger was no different. Yet this was an extremely sweet story of a man that is driven by his need to protect reaching out to a woman unable to believe anyone wants to protect her. It lead to a really emotional ending that even had me a bit teary-eyed. With Matthew realized how hard he had fallen for Emily, his vulnerabilities started showing and it just made the story extremely charming! It was a very sweet ending, as you an always expect with Callen's novels. I enjoyed it very much.

I thoroughly enjoyed this captivating story that scrutinizes the extremes one will go to for survival when faced with no other options, focusing on lies, deception, secrets and blackmail.
Emily, running from her past, boldly decides to pose as the widow of a man she met once, following his advice to seek out his family if ever in need. Welcomed warmly, she gains the protection and security she desperately seeks.
Matthew returns home to correct the misinformation about his supposed death. His family's relief and surprise are palpable, but he too faces a shock when introduced to Emily, his supposed wife. Choosing to play along, he feigns amnesia.
Emily masterfully hides her true emotions and quickly acclimates, playing the devoted wife convincingly. Matthew sees her as a true part of his family and community, admired for her devotion to his sisters and the work she does with the village children. Emily is determined to win his heart, leading to an authentic marriage, while Matthew seeks to uncover the truth behind her deception.
Their marriage journey is filled with highs and lows, plot twists, and deep emotions. Matthew starts to understand Emily's desperate circumstances, realizing why she resorted to such deceit. He wants her to confess on her own, but trust is slow to build. When her past catches up with her, everything comes to a head.
Against all odds and mutual deception, they fall in love and plan to marry to avoid scandal and set things right. Emily, burdened by her lies, fears for Matthew's safety and contemplates running. However, with the villain on their trail, they plan their escape. Unexpected twists involving the villain and his accomplice arise, but everything resolves quite nicely.

Humm, how or what to write for a review for this story. I have read this series and loved it. The stories are all great reads and I feel should be read in order thru can be read as stand alones. This story is of Captain Matthew Leland and Emily Grey daughter to a country squire. Matthew after being grievous injured in battle finds out the service had mistakenly told his family in England he was killed! He with his best friend, Lt. Reginald Lawton rushes back to England to let his family know he is indeed alive. Imagine the shock and happiness of his parents and sisters! But he is also in for a shock when they include a lovely lady, Emily as his beloved? What? His wife who was this person? She had lied to her family and instead of calling her out he sees and hears nothing but love and concern in his parents' voice for her. Thinking fast he tells them he has amnesia and doesn’t remember her. Emily knows he is not her husband and has lied for her own reasons. Aw, let the games began. Matthew wants to know what she is hiding, and Emily has everything she ever wanted to lose if she is not careful. What will Matthew do when his memory comes back? How will Emily help him or try to make the lies true so he doesn’t send her away or to prison. Of course, there is a villain too in her past. Wow, what a read. Once you get started it is such a fun, intriguing mystery and love story. We get to read both Matthews thoughts and Emily’s too its great know what each is feeling and dealing with. Lies, secrets, past all come together for great read. One you don’t want to miss. For those who like to know this a steamy read with scenes that fit the story line. All are well told. They originally met on a ship that was torn apart and Emily lost her father and 3 brothers! Instantly changing her from gently bred to poverty stricken and not really knowing how to survive!
She is beautiful and resourceful and learns to lie and hide true emotions whenever it is needed!
Mathew is surprised to say the least to find a wife after he literally returns from the dead! Emily has become a treasure to his family and the village and everyone loves her!
But who is she really?
Mathew is not alone and he arrives with his best friend Lieutenant Reginald Lawton who I am certain have his own story!
He requests his assistance with going along with the story until he can uncover the truth!
They even have Emily investigated which is also a part of the story! This story has so many twists and turns that it’s definitely a roller coaster ride!
In spite of a packet of lies and untruths these two fall in love! When the truth is revealed and Emily still has severe trust issues she tries to keep Mathew safe and out of it!
The villain does not work alone and when is accomplice is revealed it’s shocking and disturbing!
Mathew actions are disturbing at times he treats her like a mistress when Emily had already been betrayed several times! That’s the reason for 4.5 stars!
But you won’t want to put it down! So many family lives are changed by Emily for the better! Bravo for love truly conquers all!.

Lies, Lust, Love (with a bit of danger)
Emily never imagined that she could be so desperate as to lie so easily...until that was her only option.
Matthew never imagined that he could be so free to do as he pleased...until doing so hurt those he loved.
As I began reading Never Marry a Stranger, I was immediately pulled into a complex story, but I was concerned that the detailed style would slow the pace. As it turned out, I was both right and wrong. The story was engrossing, and the pace was what was needed to truly develop both the plot and the characters.
I loved the heroine. She was spunky and wise, with a good sense of survival. I am not usually a fan of deceit, but in context it worked for Emily and Matthew. He wasn't exactly a saint because he too was being deceptive. The supporting characters were also well developed, but not to the point of stealing scenes.
The author, Gayle Callen, has an easy to follow style that kept the scenes moving, kept me guessing and extracted the right emotion at the right moment.
This stand-alone read was entertaining and the ending was very sweet – like the cherry on top of a perfect sundae.

Emily was in dire straits. Amazingly she was able to save herself by stepping into the role of widow to a soldier that never came home. The soldier's family welcomed their new daughter and gave her the security that she needed. Everything was going well until the soldier miraculously returned from the dead!

Okay, this book was very different. First, it was not about the ton or season or any such thing that was refreshing by itself.
Secondly, you have 2 absolutely compelling protagonists.
Emily: Smart, brave, lovely, loving. Tricks Matthew's family into believing she's their dead sons wife. (Until said dead son comes back)
Matthew: a little bit of a reckless soul, but clever and protective. Injured at war, presumed dead, comes back home to find a stranger claiming to be his wife.
The intellectual dynmic between these two was so exciting. She tries to trick him into making the marriage real. He hides behind amnesia, manipulating Emily to find out the truth behind the deception. It snowballs into physical tension wound so tight. And then it snaps, and the secrets come out.
Until this point, the book was so entertaining, but Matthews behavior was, at this point, a little dishonorable. His cousins call him out on it, as does his friend, and only then does he realize how badly he's mistreating Emily. I felt the end was a bit rushed, and their declaration to each other a little underdeveloped.
But otherwise, the book was very, very well done. The premise was unique, and the side characters were all relevant too. Now, I have to read the dukes and Daniel's books.

I read this as a standalone novel, but realize that it is not the first in the series! When I read the description of this book, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of someone fooling another person's family into believing that they were married to a deceased family member. Throw in the curve ball of that family member coming back to life and I was hooked! The initial chemistry between Emily and Matthew had me a little bit wary of whether their relationship would have me invested or not, but I was pleasantly surprised. Both characters are extremely likable, compassionate, and more understanding than you would probably get in real life! The family dynamic and obstacles along the way made this novel an enjoyable read that I couldn't put down. I would definitely recommend this if you don't mind a storyline that deviates a little bit from your traditional historic romance!.

This is the third book of the Sons of Scandal series. The story was well-written and kept my attention from start to finish. Matthew returns home from India after being presumed dead. He hopes to surprise his family but he ends up being the one surprised when he comes home and finds his wife. Funny, he doesn't remember ever marrying! Emily had met Matthew when he saved her from a sinking ship. When she has no other options, she decides to go to his family for help, pretending to be his widow. She never expected him to return home. Matthew decides to go along with it, pretending to have amnesia, and to try to find out what her angle is. What he didn't plan on doing was fall in love with her.
A uniquely entertaining story with likable and endearing characters. I had a lovely time reading it!.

At some point, they must determine how to resolve all this without causing a scandal. Good luck! The story is filled with intrigue, mystery, danger, a bit of humor, and an odd but entertaining love story.

A very different premise to regency romance! It truly was a fun ride watching Emily and Matthew tip-toe around the lies each of them had weaved. The plot was well developed with twists and turns that keep you guessing. Their chemistry was just flowing off the pages and watching each of them realize what their actions had done brought out all the emotions. I remember at one point really being frustrated with Matthew over his treatment of Emily. THAT is how good the author is to be able to instigate emotions so “effortlessly”. Well worth the read!.

This is the final book in the series but could be read as a stand alone.
It was definitely an unique plot. When Matthew’s family is mistakenly told he is dead, he returns to England as quickly as possible. Imagine his surprise when he not only greets his family, but his wife….who he does not recall at all!
Emily thought no harm could come from her proclaiming her marriage to a dead soldier. But now that he’s home, she has to see if she can keep him.
I enjoyed the bit of intrigue with this story as well as the two characters trying to outdo each other. A fun read!.

This story is loaded with twists and turns of the characters all because of the lack of trust and truth amongst them. Matthew starts off seeing his "marriage" as a lark but has past issues that interfere with his ability to trust and love. Emily has faced struggles that caused her to act outside her conscience and "marriage" is just one of those steps. What would any of us do to survive? As the intrigue continues, Matthew and Emily must build trust to outwit their adversaries and overcome.

Van de vorige 5 boeken die ik van deze auteur gelezen heb heb ik hele stukken tekst overgeslagen omdat er zoveel geneuzel in stond maar in dit verhaal heeft ze dat bijna helemaal weggelaten . Ik heb nog 6 boeken van haar liggen en hoop dat die ook in deze stijl geschreven zijn .

I probably should have put this aside sooner, but there was enough intrigue to keep me reading. My biggest complaint is that our hero and heroine both lie and deceive each other for…90% of the story of so? I’m all for a fake marriage but the deceptions went on for so long it was absurd. I think the story would have been stronger if they had discovered their lies sooner, and worked together to overcome.

From lies to love....
This was a whirlwind through pain, trauma, fear, lies, threats, blackmail, truth, love and finally trust. Seeing everything these two went through to reach their HEA, was a page turner that I couldn't put down.
I enjoyed the writing style, the humor, and the depth of the characters. I am off to find and read more stories by Ms. Callen.

A delicious tale of subterfuge, lies, secrets and blackmail. She may be forced to live a lie but she has never turned to the dark side whereas he was determined to get to the bottom of the secrets. A thoroughly enjoyable read!.

A romance in the making with two people from different circumstances hiding secrets from each other. Matthew returns home to find a wife he never knew he had and Emily pretending in order to have a safe life. They muddle their way through circumstances as they become fond of each other.
