It was my favorite manga once. I re-read it and gave it solid 3 stars. Two gay vampires and one human child, which was taken in because of guilt, were forming a relationship for sake of the plot. King, the oldest, made from young delinquent half Chinese man who was happily raped by his fellows, but saved at the last moment and turned in to the vampire. Then he was quite jealous and mean to little Ace aka the brat boy. It was obvious from the beginning.Ace when turned to legal 18 for everything ended as vampire and in passionate lover of J. King had to go out of the way and his presence was terminated. The manga art is solid but plot lack a lot. There is predictable action, which put all in drain. The vampire fetish is pulled to maximu...bad.
This is the story of two vampires and their human ward. King turned J and they've spent their time together as father and son, brothers and lovers. However, J has issues with being a vampire and acts out many times. King takes in a human child, Ace, when his parents are killed in the hopes that having someone to take care of, to be responsible for, will help J from his dark mood swings and listless behavior.
However, King has brought into their family someone who not only changes J's behavior but slowly, as he grows, becomes something to J that King couldn't be. Ace becomes something that J wants more than anything but he doesn't want to turn Ace into what they've become and condemn him to the life King and J have lived. So he pushes Ace away. J's plan would work if it weren't for the fact that Ace feels the same way about J as J feels about him. He wants to be with J even if it means becoming a vampire... now he just has to convince J.
King also has to deal with the fact that his human ward who has become like his own son and his vampire-son and lover want each other above anything else. Where does that leave him?
Pathos is a fun and sexy vampire story that makes you ache for each character and their own position in this unusual family they've formed. You feel for King who has wanted nothing but for J and Ace to be happy but then realizes that that happiness is to have each other. You feel for J who struggles with being a vampire himself and tries to fight his attraction to Ace because he wants Ace to have a human life. You feel for Ace, who might be the youngest one, but seems to have the more solid idea of what he wants out of life and what that is, but because of his age, he can't make King and J see that.
Pathos is another great story from Mika Sadahiro and I would suggest everyone give it a read!
This one was for the yaoi portion of my vampire paper and I have to admit, this one was both well drawn and well told as far as the storyline goes but it was also creepy. The names really could have used help too. Ace is a young boy, fourteen at the time of the beginning of the story. He’s being raised by King and Jay, two vampires. King is the master vampire and Jay is his lover and subordinate. Jay accidentally killed Ace’s parents (though it is uncertain the boy ever knows this). He and King, in a fit of guilt, raise the boy but there’s a problem, Ace wants Jay. And this is the creepy part. At fourteen, Ace is the sexual aggressor. Jay does his best to put him off and Ace is sent to boarding school.
Throughout this, Ace still tries to see Jay. At some point when he’s fourteen, Ace loses his virginity to a kid at school but he spends the sexual encounter imagining it’s Jay. By the time the story ends, Ace is eighteen. He’s managed to manipulate Jay and King into all sorts of things. He manages to get Jay to sleep with him and to turn him into a vampire. Ace is highly jealous of King and manipulates events and breaks the older vampire’s heart until finally King is no longer a threat. Frankly Ace is creepy and sociopathic and I felt sorry for Jay more than I felt ooo, this is sexy. However there is a lot of sex so I think a lot of the yaoi readers would love this one for that. I would have rather the sex been more King/Jay than Ace/Jay but there is both.

It was great until what King did at the end killed my joy. I wanted to like Ace but he is absolutely bratty in Book 2. Gosh it's such a sad thing seeing this brat hurting King and Jay. It is rather hard to imagine someone calm and collected King would do such an emotional thing. It's unbefitting for a hundred years immortal like him.
This story makes me think of Interview with the Vampire as the vampires in this story shares lots of similar undead traits and the characters reminds me of Lestat and Louis.
In my heart Ace does not deserve to have Jay nor a happy ending not when he had to destroy other people's happiness to gain it.
Overall the story felt rushed but that is how most manga are since they are limited by the frames and page count especially if is a oneshot story and not a meant to be serialized. If this is a novel the story would feels less choppy I guess.
As I said on the review for book one I was disappointed in the book. I wasn't thrilled with the plot and the sex didn't make up for it. I really like this author's other stuff though so its all good ;)
I love the artwork in these so very much. There are several pages I would love to have as framed art or on a T-shirt. And I enjoyed volume 2 more because all the main characters are older now and the interactions between them were just more interesting to me.
The following review is based off my own opinions, thoughts and reactions. So in other words brace yourself. *There may be inappropriate words such as curse words.* You have been advised in advance.*
Ah book two, just as I suspected! It would be thrilling, annoying, and down right devilishly delicious in all of it's glory! Ugh, it's like a sin to be this happy with a manga book and how well it turned out! Highly worth it though and exactly how vampire manga should be done.
Before I dive into my love fest for Jay and Ace, I have to talk about my feelings for King at this point. I feel like I haven't really given him the proper time to explain my thoughts on this. King is the character I have a crap ton of mixed feelings on. In book one, I was excited with how he was acting. Like the cool-headed peace-keeper that keeps the balance between Jay and Ace. However, the reader gets little glimpses of his jealousy and how King wants to monopolize Jay. Not only that, but how he feels about mortality is kinda sweet in a way. However, in book two King really gives that arrogant vibe and his jealousy starts to show through just a little bit. He even gets a little dark when he takes his own life just to try to prove his point. Which at this point I'm just like, "You're stupid and a total drama bomb." So, King isn't my favorite character. He's like an annoying mosquito that keeps coming back and biting me until I squish him.
Getting into my favorite love couple, Jay and Ace, ugh where do I begin?! Their relationship is like a raging fire. It's uncontrollable and it spreads like the wind. Like hot damn, these are two sexy bitches! Even after King's death, even though there's a little blip their fire and passion for one another is very consuming. Not to mention, you can feel the sex radiating from through the pages. And I'm one thirsty bitch at this point. However, I like that they included Ace finally getting changed into a vampire and showing how Jay felt about that because in book one we, as the readers, get that small glimpse of what Jay's opinions are on mortality. So seeing how Jay handles Ace's transformation was a nice way to really test their relationship and bond. It's all very drool worthy.
Ending this review on a positive note, I like how the author ended this book on a positive note and leaving enough room to do a third book if they really wanted to. The growth of Ace and Jay is also shown near the end of this book which was a nice touch. A very nice touch to wrap up the book.
All in all, this book lived up to my expectations. I had a few doubts, but in the end everything turned out the way I had hoped it would. I did want more sex involved with Ace and Jay, but that's just me being thirsty. But, it was a good book and very well done.
