The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved: Or Also Known As: The Fewness of Those Catholics Saved

Rate this book
Excerpt: I will divide this subject into two points. In the first one, to fill you with dread, I will let the theologians and Fathers of the Church decide on the matter and declare that the greater number of Christian adults are damned; and, in silent adoration of that terrible mystery, I will keep my own sentiments to myself. In the second point I will attempt to defend the goodness of God versus the godless, by proving to you that those who are damned are damned by their own malice, because they wanted to be damned. So then, here are two very important truths. If the first truth frightens you, do not hold it against me, as though I wanted to make the road of heaven narrower for you, for I want to be neutral in this matter; rather, hold it against the theologians and Fathers of the Church who will engrave this truth in your heart by the force of reason. If you are disillusioned by the second truth, give thanks to God over it, for He wants only one thing: that you give your hearts totally to Him. Finally, if you oblige me to tell you clearly what I think, I will do so for your consolation.

St. Leonard of Port Maurice, O.F.M. was born in 1676 near Genoa, Italy. While at the famous Roman college of St. Aloysius, he became known as another version of that saint because of his extraordinary piety, diligence, and good deeds. Subsequently he was made aware of his vocation to the priesthood at the Roman convent of St. Bonaventure, and became a Franciscan in 1697. Additionally, he possessed an intense love for Christ and His Mother, the Immaculate Conception, penance, and humility. His The Hidden Treasure: Holy Mass was published in the nineteenth century with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. St. Leonard died at Rome on the twenty-sixth of November, 1751. He was canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867.

Wonderful meditation on the truth of the Catholic Faith that very few souls are saved. Saint Leonard of Port Maurice (1676-1751) bases his sermon on the Fathers and Doctors of the Church and Holy Scripture. All preach the same thing: the vast majority of men and the vast majority of Catholics go to hell for the simple reason that they choose to do so.

This truth of the Faith is hard to hear for Catholics today who are accustomed to a sentimental, modernist, and distorted version of Catholic teaching, if they are catechised at all.

Saint Leonard emphasizes that this truth of the Faith should not discourage us. If we choose to reject the world, strive for virtue, frequent the Sacraments, and avoid sin, we will make it to Heaven. We will only go to Hell if we choose it, which is, alas, the choice for the vast majority of humanity.

Wake up!

Well this is enlightening and terrifying! A great subject for meditation on Palm Sunday. The evidence from both Scripture and the Church Fathers cannot be denied.
