Al igual que su predecesor el libro tiene un inicio bastante lento, pero ya en la segunda parte agarra vuelo. Además, continua con esas descripciones larguísimas y llenas de detalle de cada nuevo lugar (y son muchos porque el protagonista viaja bastante) al más estilo Tolkien o quizás un poco más.

Sin embargo, este autor logra una gran calidad en "giros inesperados" que hacen que este libro valga la pena tanto como el anterior y me hace sospechar que su falta de popularidad solo se debe a los puntos anteriores y que hay que tenerle una gran paciencia a estos libros.

Lo que también me llama la atención es que a pesar de ser una segunda parte no es para nada una historia solo de transición, si no que pasan bastantes cosas que serán determinantes para el curso de la historia.

Ya quiero leer la tercera parte, la historia se ha vuelto cada vez más interesante.

It's frustrating that this book was very hard to find. Outdated and nearly non-existent I ended up bargaining the one battered copy I caught at less than a dollar.

I wanted this book because I expected it to be refreshing like the first. I loved the world that the author had created, from the setting to the lore to the cultures of the people throughout. It was all so gaudy in truth but this is fantasy and there are no limits.

Unfortunate then that the plot wasn't as compelling and I had every trouble keeping up with my reading. I blame my preferences against too much political talk. That was what this book was. Political talk and talk and some exciting events happened but then the politics just overwhelmed them. I couldn't even finish the third part because my attention span wouldn't allow it.

This book had so much potential. The idea is much more original and likeable as compared to the redundant material that's being forced down by mainstream fiction. The one flaw is that it is political and young people have very little interest in that.

Waar Audley met zijn eerste boek een goed begin zette voor een nieuwe fanbasis, vervalt die hoop een beetje in het tweede deel van deze trilogie.
Het boek staat boordevol uitgemolken dialogen die het verhaal vertragen en saai maken. De personages raken geïrriteerd en verveeld door het wachten en hetzelfde geldt voor de lezer. Dit boek mist actie.

Buiten de ergerlijke typefouten en zelfs grammaticale fouten in dit deel, waren er ook wat verhaaltechnische punten die voor geen meter kloppen.
De winter, die drie maanden eerder in het hoge noorden begon, duurt nog maar twee weken volgens de berekeningen van Cathan die zich inmiddels in het lage zuiden bevindt - basis aardrijkskundige kennis is natuurlijk dat het zomer had moeten zijn op het zuidelijk halfrond.
Ook word er een boog gebruikt om een doelwit te treffen op de rand van het bereik van de boog, terwijl de ergste storm sinds jaren in de passen van de berg woedt. De wind maakt het gebruik van pijl en boog uiteraard onmogelijk.

Daarnaast sluit het tweede deel niet mooi aan op het eerste deel. Ook begint het frustrerend te worden dat Audley nooit de moeite neemt om een korte uitleg bij zijn namen te geven.
Keizers, Goden en oudheidkundige schrijvers krijgen slechts eenmaal een uitleg en de lezer heeft maar te onthouden welke dat was, ook al worden ze misschien pas 500 pagina's later weer genoemd.

Verder krijgt de lezer af en toe het gevoel dat Audley dingen uit zijn mouw schudt om het verhaal verder te slepen.
Een nieuw belangrijk geschrift, een plotseling te vertrouwen bondgenoot die al jarenlang een vriend blijkt te zijn van een vertrouweling et cetera. Met kleine vermeldingen eerder in het verhaal, was de verhaallijn steviger en strakker overgekomen.

Ondanks deze vele kleine kritiekpuntjes en de langdradige discussies tussen de hoofdpersonages, leest het toch vrij plezierig weg - zij het trager dan zijn voorganger.
Het is wel te merken dat Audley naar een climax toewerkt en de wereld van Aquasilva is zeker fascinerend genoeg om door te willen blijven lezen. Wat dan wel weer erg jammer is, is dat het epiloog vaag is en een rollende ogengevoel geeft in een poging om mysterieus over te komen.

Hopelijk vindt Audley zijn muse toch terug in het slotdeel van deze trilogie, want het begon allemaal zo veelbelovend!

As with the first book, I am generally pretty happy with the story underlying the book, but I find the author's tendency to make things up as he goes along kind of annoying. He finds important books that have never been mentioned and all sorts of powerful people we've never heard of before. That's okay in the beginning of a book, but not so much halfway through. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, but I'll hold off on my judgement on whether they will be answered in the third book before being too annoyed at them, although they certainly make this book a little bit incomplete by itself (as with the first one). So that's unfortunate, but still, the main thread is decent enough.

Il giovane Cathan, erede al trono di Lepidor, dopo essere riuscito a salvare la sua regione dalle mire dispotiche del Dominio, è ora pronto a riprendere il largo con i suoi amici, alla ricerca di nuovi alleati e soprattutto di risposte alle troppe domande irrisolte. Si reca così nel lontano Arcipelago, con lo scopo di organizzare un commercio di armi, in vista della crociata che i sacerdoti stanno preparando contro i ribelli.

I liked the second book in this series even more than the first. Unfortunately our library doesn't have the third in the series. Grr.
