Oversaturated with the latest video games and iPhone apps, does anyone slow down to remember A Simpler Time? Join A.J. as she discovers a summer of fun with her mom, finding animals in the clouds, and a trek to find the perfect four-leaf clover!
“She thought no one would care about her summer of just hanging around the house. How could she create a creative journal or interesting story?”
A. J. begins a summer that she thinks will be boring and no way to have adventures like her friends who were all going to exciting places for their vacation. But her Mother has other ideas. She plans some simple activities that makes A. J.’s summer more than just hanging around the house and more fun than she could have imagined. The simple things they do give them something to enjoy together and gives A. J. an opportunity to learn about nature in an exciting and fascinating manner. Laura Eckroat, author of The Life of Bud, has written another book that children will love. Her story makes us want to go out with our children and look for four leaf clovers and find some lightening bugs to show us the way to A Simpler Time. She shows us, in a wonderfully charming way, that the adventures in the back yard can be more fulfilling than any vacation away from home and that modern technology is not the only way to spend time. A Simpler Time is an Honorable Mention presented at the NTBF Awards on April16, 2011 at the North Texas Book Festival in Denton, Texas.
On the last day of school, A.J., a third grader, learns she has to do a summer project. It is an exercise in creative writing where she must keep a journal over summer vacation.
A.J. has no idea what she could possibly write about her boring life.
One day her mother takes her on an adventure away from home. Their first task was to find a four-leaf clover. How lucky; A.J. finds one. She takes it home and uses it as part of her writing assignment.
The next day they're off again for another adventure, however, this time they didn't get in the car to go somewhere. "How can the backyard be the spot for this next adventure?" is what A.J. asks.
They look up at the sky and discover all sorts of things in the cloud shapes. They see a rabbit, boat, and even a candy cane.
What they do next and where they go is something you'll have to find out for yourself. You may want to buy a hardcover version of this book for your bookshelf as the illustrations are marvellous.
We're sure you'll love other books written by Laura W. Eckroat titled, Went Out For a Donut - Came Back With a Muffin, What's In The Corner, and The Life of Bud.
Do you remember a time before internet, iPods, a video games? Do you remember doing anything that wasn’t technology-related? I vaguely remember a time during my childhood when playing in a cardboard box was the highlight of my day. In a world overrun by computers, it’s very easy to lose sight of the simple wonders in life. I think that’s why I love this book so much. A.J. thinks her summer will be boring because she isn’t going to do the things her classmates are doing over break. Her mom shows her that you don’t need to go to some exotic place or have the newest toys or games to have fun.
While this is a children’s book, I think adults can learn a valuable lesson from it as well. We all need to slow down and learn to appreciate the small things that we pass up everyday because we’re too busy checking our email on our Blackberrys as we run to wherever we’re supposed to be. I really think every kid out there should read this...maybe they’ll turn the video games off for once.
"A Simpler Time" by Laura W. Eckroat is a beautiful story about a little girl who stays home all vacation while her friends go off to other places. Her class assignment is to make a journal of all the things she does on her vacation, but fears she'll have nothing interesting to write or show. Her Mom has a surprise for her every day that although she hasn't left home, she's having fun. Things that we did as children before technology ruined the small simple things, like cloud watching.
WE loved this book as a family and immediately would've gone outside to do some of these things if it hadn't been so hot this summer. It reminds you to appreciate God's creation, even the things we take for granted.
Lovely, simply lovely. It isn't often that I've come across such a simple and yet sweet story. And yet not just a sweet read, A Simpler Time has a wonderful message at its heart which sees a young girl share in the simple things in life such as cloud watching with her mom.
Transported back to my own childhood spent making daisy chains. It is these simple pleasures that I remember. Simple pleasures that I fear many of today's generation miss out on.
Perfect bedtime reading. At twenty four pages, many of them sweet fully coloured illustrations, this is just the right length to read in one sitting and should make for sweet dreams ... and not just for the children.
Laura Eckroat delivers excellence yet again with A Simpler Time. AJ's discovery of the wonderful world around her brought back fond memories of my childhood. Nothing is more exciting then finding adventure in your own back yard or neighborhood. While computer games and texting often become boring after the newness has worn off, the many wonders of nature will never cease to amaze a child with an open heart and mind!
