Not so long ago, Elton had it all. A loving family, a jewelry business he helped his father run, and the esteemed position of Jeweler Troisieme to Mars. But the revelation of deep betrayals by his father tore his life and his family apart, culminating in a tragedy that forever ruined any chance of happiness for Elton and his sister, Lana. Parents dead, abandoned by friends, and their reputations ruined, Elton and Lana accept the offer of a new life on a planet far away from Mars.
Before settling into their new lives, however, Elton and Lana decide to stop on Bangkok, the notorious 'star of pleasures.' In the place where all dreams come true, all they want is to learn how to be happy again. But everything goes awry when Elton's unmatched skills with gems allows him to spot a fake necklace in a museum, a discovery that leads him straight to the legendary Jewels of Bangkok.
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
I usually adore these sort of books from Megan Derr, but for some reason I could no immerse myself inside this at all. The sheer idiocy of it... Generally I'd find it cute, but this time I think I'll try rereading at a later date.
Elements: - silly nickname that's used not just constantly, but instead of the MC's name (in this case, it was 'pretty') - MC angsts over not being 'good enough' - threadbare plot - insta-love
The story is well written as most of the stories Megan Derr writes and characters are surely charming, but, while I recognize that fact, I can't bring myself to "like" the story with incest in it. So, I'm not rating it, because it wouldn't be fair to the author. Or to me, for that matter.
That said, I do want to read more about this universe. It seems that at least two books set in it are on the way.
Sweet and short, and follows Derr's usual line of "angsting main character finds something he isn't sure he deserves". She loves this kind of characters --and so do I. Still, the characters were lovely and likeable, and the story, although short, is very interesting.
A love-at-first-sight MMM story with twincest. Actually the romance part is pretty similar to Risk It All except the setting...The main character always accepts the menage so easily without any struggle, and the person he falls in love with is handsome and wealthy as it should be.
A novella set in the Infinitum universe, we see the twins find their person.
Elton is a man who has lost nearly everything important in his life - especially the right to exercise his talents and abilities. For Elton is a jeweler with an extraordinary eye - he can tell the origin of gems by their refractions and colors.
On his way to start a new life with his sister, Lana, they stop on the planet Bangkok. When he spots a fake of a priceless necklace, it triggers a chain of events he could never have predicted.
Once he convinces the authorities that the theft had occurred, they quickly identify the likely thief. But being a gemstone wunderkind has gotten old. What he wants and has always wanted is the chance to make one-of-a-kind pieces.
But his greatest achievement is telling the twins apart...
Set in the universe of the author's Infinitum Government. Elton is a jeweler of high caliber, cast out from his profession after unwittingly implicating his father for jewelry theft. Five years later, he and his sister Lana are en route to Kreska to start start over, when they stop off at Bangkok for a vacation. The first day they spend touring a local museum with several jewels of note, they pause for the night and return. To Elton's horror, the massive jewelry piece he had admired has been replaced with a fake! They report the crime, but the local authorities don't exactly believe him until he proves his knowledge to the titular Jewels of Bangkok, the identical twins who run the planet. They try to trick him by switching roles, but he easily can tell them apart and angrily demands they quit testing him and get serious, which really draws their interest.
This short story gets a bit repetitive and none of the characters get developed very deeply. Which is good because threesomes aren't really my thing. At least the sex was mostly closed door. Still, not great.
Hmmm - usually incest is a big no-no for me and I might not have started reading if I had been fully aware of what was to come. But the whole setting is so far-off from reality that I did not mind in the end. Steamy as hell, without much of a plot (apart from "pretty" constantly thinking/whining about the past), it was a hot quickie (or several), but not my favourite of the month ... Somehow I am struggling with the author of late :-(
Pretty fast paced for a novella (or short story, not sure what this is classified as) and by that I mean I felt the pacing was off. I also felt I was missing something when reading the story but didn’t realize when I bought it that it was part of a series. Definitely insta-love, but not in the way I like.
A fast and sweet story spun off from the Infinitum universe by way of connection through Kavalerov and Tresnor. This follows a MMM story as Tresnor's sons, the "Jewels of Bangkok" encounter Elton a jeweler on vacation. Elton has had his life ruined by an inherent ability to tell apart gems which was used against him and his family destroying them all. Wanting to forget Elton is on Bangkok with his twin sister Lana and notices that a famous necklace has been swapped for a fake. This leads to him meeting the Jewels who themselves become infatuated.
I found it interesting that Elton's ability is never explored. It gave me a sense that he was probably a mutant magics capable human and he could fit right in to the general story going on elsewhere. This ability generally makes those around him either jealous and angry, or constantly skeptical. It's given him quite a complex about dealing with people. The Jewels have had their own issues with people and while they are far more social than Elton, they have never really found someone they loved. In this way their relationship matches very quickly and it is a sweet and hot romance that ensues.
While this story had more evident typos with simple word swaps, I found it didn't take away from the short story. I enjoy this universe and this just goes to show that many more stories could be told in it.
This book got me biting my lip, smirking and smiling like a lunatic! And gosh! It was so hot! I like this story a lot and I enjoyed reading it. It's just so cute and sweet and hot. Only I wish there was more! I wish to know what happened in bed those nights they were together!! Argg!
I like Baxter and Lucid a lot. They're an amusing pair. I also like Elton and his shy and quite self. It was so cute watching him getting flustered and sandwiched between Baxter an Lucid. This was a short read but a very pleasurable one.
Megann Derr really does write quite interesting stories. And hot ones! Can't wait to read more from this author!
I was disappointed by this one ; there was really good potential, what with the MC's special ability and the Fabulous Two. And yet, when I thought things were finally getting somewhere and the story had all the elements to start for good... "The End". Like some other readers mentioned, there was also the annoying matter of the MC being rebaptized "pretty". Having him be called that all the time got old really quick, especially as his name shortens to something much more natural sounding that could be used as an endearment.
Despite that, it was an enjoyable read with interesting world-builing, and nice characters. It just didn't have enough depth in my opinion.
FIRST RE-READ 19 July 2016 I very much needed a fairy-tale-comfort-read escape last night, and this is the one I chose to go back to. And it was lovely to experience this again.
Favorite Quote: "Nothing like you ever actually happens to someone like me."
ORIGINAL REVIEW 31 May 2014 Oh, this was lovely.
A delightfully fairy-tale-like Cinderfella story where the deserving-but-downtrodden hero has all of his dreams come true. And the fact that he gets not one but TWO handsome princes at the end? Perfect.
We get the background of Elton and Lana's tragic story through the blurb, and the rest of the details through Elton's ruminations whenever he feels insecure again. I like Derr's writing a lot but would Love a longer story.
