For five years Beacon has used her powers to protect the city of Heartland. But after a devastating defeat at the hands of the supervillain Arson, Beacon disappears and is presumed dead.
Now a cataclysmic new threat has revealed itself to Heartland, in the form of a new, homicidal superhuman, who claims to be Beacon!
The citizens of Heartland are shocked and horrified by the news that their guardian angel has now become their greatest enemy. But no one is more surprised than Grace Grey: The original Beacon!
Beacon: The Hero of Heartland is a fun little superhero novella that tells a surprisingly good set of stories about a girl that gains incredible power as a teen, has a promising career as a superhero, eventually loses to a villain that has a personal history with her, and returns when an impostor wreaks havoc on Heartland.
The main problem with this book is that it feels too rushed, and I think the main problem is that it is a novella, but has enough material in there for TWO novels. I go over it in a bit more detail on my blog, but the first half with Arson and the second half with the Impostor Beacon have a lot of really great story beats and all the ingredients for building amazing characters, but it never has time to really play to those strengths because it is a single novella. But if you can get past some bad narrative flow, you've got a really great piece of superhero fiction here.
In this world there is only one superhero remaining - Beacon. After losing someone she loved in a fight and loss with the Supervillain Arson, she hangs up her suit and has vowed to fight no more. But then someone clones her superhero Beacon and creates a homicidal version who threatens to tear the city apart, Will this failed superhero be able to rise to the challenge?
If you enjoy superheros you will love the intense suspense and heroic journey of Grace Grey in Beacon - The Hero of Heartland. I recommend this novel, and enjoyable intriguing novel that will keep you captivated. I received this novel from StoryOrigin. This is my true and honest opinion.
If you enjoy stories about superheroes, you will enjoy this book. While not a genre that I normally read, I did find the story enjoyable. A young adult or even a teen would be the more suitable target audience for this book. So, if you have a teen in your home that enjoys to read and likes superheroes, give him/her a copy of this book. They are sure to be entertained for a few hours.
I received an ARC copy of this book and volunteered a honest review.
Everyone wants to be a superhero except those that are. Grace is like a female superman and someone once close to her knows it. When an arsonist causes problems Grace gets hurt badly and people think she is dead. A new Beacon arises and things soon escalate out of control. It's a quick easy, predictable read. Good guy saves people, bad guy destroys people and really bad guys think they have the way to rule the world and become invincible
It has the feel of a comic book (in a good way), but the quality of the writing is poor. And the plot feels unpolished, with plot developments occurring in a way that often seems forced and artificial. Also, the protagonist and most of the supporting characters act kind of stupid. I wanted to like it more, but there were too many rough edges and flaws to rate it higher.
Beacon died at the hands of supervillain Arson but now five years on there’s a new threat in Heartland an homicidal superhuman that is Beacon?…follow the journey to find out what happens to the citizens of heartland. Well written suit young adult book . I read an arc of this book and my review is my own voluntary
A unique concept in a superhero novel, I was invested in what was going on with the characters and the story. Matthew Kreke has a great writing style for the superhero genre. I was never bored when reading this and glad it was so well done.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I accidentally picked up this book when trying to grab one by a different author I like. But that’s ok, even if it is aimed at a younger reader. This was a quick and easy read. The characters and story draw you in quickly and there are enough plot twists to keep you engaged and reading until the very end. If you like superhero fiction, you will enjoy this book!
I really enjoyed this quick read about a superhero. It reads like a origin story and introduces Grace and explains how she became a superhero and about a nemesis or two. I really liked the story and was sad when I reached the end. Ups and downs and surprises made it fun to read.
I admit I read fantasy genres more than I read superheroes but I'm trying to write my own superhero story so to find this cool short story was very nice. I hope to find more written superhero stories like this one I know marvel and DC have taken over the market and as well as graphic novels. But it's nice to read short superhero stories that are written.
