There Came a Wounded Knight

Rate this book
ENGLAND, 1193 A.D.
With Prince John’s soldiers hot on their trail, Lady Alix Oliver, 16, and her younger brother, William, flee to the village of Sudwell for safety, but things go wrong from the start.

William stumbles across a murder for which he is accused. He is sentenced to undergo the ancient ‘Ordeal’ whereby he must plunge his arm into a cauldron of boiling water to retrieve the stone at the bottom. An alternative is open to him, but that punishment is even worse.

Lady Alix seeks sanctuary at a castle belonging to her mother’s friend, Lady Sudwell. But soon she has her own problems to contend with when she becomes a pawn in a crooked scheme hatched by a corrupt guard and a thieving housekeeper.

Meanwhile, far away, a wounded knight, riding a milk white horse, sets a weary course for home.

Deanna Rutledge

Deanna spent over twenty years teaching classic literature and drama to students in Christian schools and homeschool co-ops in Honolulu HI. However, when she and pastor husband, Bill, returned to the mainland recently, she left the classroom and began writing a series of action/adventure novels for young adults. These are set in the Middle Ages, the same time period that had so excited her middle school and high school students in Hawaii.

When not writing, Deanna loves to spend time with her young grandchildren who now live close by, rather than thousands of miles away. Deanna and Bill are also busy raising a little whirlwind of a cockapoo named Gracie, who loves every person she meets, especially the UPS guy with the noisy truck.

Captivating!

This book drew me in to a different place at a much different time and I had to follow the story to its satisfying conclusion. This book is the last in the series. Even though I had not read the first two books, it was still easy enough to read as a standalone book.

A wonderful escape!

If you ever wondered what life was like in England during the Crusades, wonder no more. Pick up this book and escape to the 12th century when King Richard reigns while his brother Prince John undermines everything he does. Experience this through the perspective of John’s victims—sixteen-year-old Lady Alix and her younger brother, William, as they flee to safety while their father is missing during the Crusades.

This story is action-packed from page one as every incident is a feat for survival. I kept wanting to know what was going to happen as I empathized with these very real, three-dimensional characters, including Father Milo. The “supporting actors” were just as intriguing with varied personalities. The dialog was effective and true to the times.

The sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the town of Sudwell are recreated so vividly, you’ll feel like you’re there. Depending on the smell, that could be a good thing or a bad thing! Either way, the sensory details were definitely a highlight that kept me experiencing the story. Despite some “head-hopping” point of view discrepancies, this was a fascinating young adult tale recapturing the reality of a far away, long ago time.

There Came a Wounded Knight was a very interesting conclusion to the Return to Trowleigh series. However, I will say that one needs to really read the other two books in the series before this, as a lot of things in it won't make sense otherwise.

I don't really like the title, as the wounded knight has very little to do with it, but apart from that the book is very good. I would even say that this is more historically authentic than a lot of adult novels: which is saying an awful lot. There were a lot of twists, turns and returning characters from the previous books.

The relationship between Alix and Nicholas was interesting. I also like the andle of the arranged marriage trope actually ending up with a positive relationship between the two characters. The scene where he has to go clothes shopping for her is hilarious.

Recommended.

The action escalates quickly in this YA novel set in the 12th century. Rutledge shares a wealth of knowledge from this era in English history (which most will recognize as the time of tales of Robin Hood). Even the narrative reads like one would find in a centuries-old story.

Those who read either or both of the first two books in the series will pick up on the adventures of Lady Alix Oliver and her brother Will right away. At the same time, new readers will be able to follow the story easily without feeling they’ve missed information.

The scrappy teenagers tend to go from one dangerous situation to another as they hide from the agents of King John while their father is still missing after the Crusades. How will they survive their trials, and will they ever be able to return home?

Although this is Book #3 of a series, this book can stand on its own with a plotline that keeps the reader at the edge of their seat. The characters are well-developed and easy to relate to, and the fact that the story encompasses historical events in the plot offers a nice educational element to the book. Totally worth it!!!
