I just LOVE Prince Seht and Captain Ravnos!!!
4.5 Fucking Amazing Stars

description

“Damn it, Aubrey…” Seht bowed his head briefly, then tossed his head back up, flipping his long hair back. His gaze focused and heated. “I need you to live because”—
he took a shallow breath—“I do not believe my sanity would survive your death.”

Seht and Ravnos

What a wonderful ending to this series. We got to go back to the beginning and see how Seht and Aubrey met and fell in love. And what an amazing story this was. I love a good prequel and I appreciated it more after falling in love with these two in Victorious Star. The love these two feel for each other is so intense that they cannot live without each other.

Seht sucked in a deep breath, and his eyes closed. “I am…sure. I will not leave you
again. I…I cannot live without you…anymore.” A tear slid from his eye, and his voice faded. “I tried. I cannot—I will not—anymore. You are…my other…half.”

Seht and Aubrey asleep

This is a m/m, sci-fi romance full of space ship battles, cyborgs, aliens, and sexy space captains. But it is also a story about a love slave that is naturally Dominant. And the sacrifices he and his master are willing to make to be together! *sighs*

holding hands

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! I would not recommend it as a stand alone. Even though it is a prequel, it makes a great follow up to Victorious Star.

4.5 Stars

I foolishly believed Seht was a romantic in Victorious Star. Nope, not so. He's a hopeless romantic with delusions of grandeur trying to make a submissive out of Aubrey Ravnos. Seht in this particular instance is the proverbial one legged duck swimming in a circle.

This is the prequel to Victorious Star & tells the story of how Ravnos & Seht came to be. Aubrey, captured by Moribund, has been held against his will in a form of stasis & forced to submit to the ship's sentience in order to fulfill Moribund's sinister plans of destroying other ships. The ship finally sacrifices herself & arranges for them to wander into Skeldhi space so Aubrey can be freed. Due to having been held in stasis for an extended period of time, Aubrey is quite weakened & in need of some cellular regeneration when he stumbles across Seht.

Seht is able to offer the required assistance by making Aubrey his rehkyt (submissive). As we learned in Victorious Star this process genetically alters the person, making him or her a hybrid then fully Skeldhi once the process is complete. Problem is Aubrey is not enthusiastic about being collared &/or submissive for that matter. However, Aubrey is just as enamored with Seht as Seht is with Aubrey so they will have to…ahem… work out their differences or separate.

I find Ms. Hawke's writing rich, descriptive & captivating. She transports us to an action packed world full of colorful characters, exotic lands & her own tongue twisting language. The language can seem a bit daunting or off-putting; it's not wholly unrelatable like in some books where you can't make heads or tails of what the word means without having to flip to the glossary in the back. And did I mention the sex? Woot! Damn…

2ND REREAD; APRIL 2014: NO CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS REVIEW

1ST REREAD REVIEW - 14 FEBRUARY 2011
This is still a 4-star read the second time around. It would have been five if not for the reasons Jenre mentioned in her excellent review. I was more aware of the power struggle between Aubrey and Seht this time and was delighted to find I was fully invested in it and wondered how these two uber-alphas would resolve the dilemma.

While I liked the resolution (I had totally forgotten that was how this book ended!), unless you're aware Lost Star is the prequel to Victorious Star, you will find the ending very abrupt. So I recommend that you have Victorious Star ready before you get to the end of LS. A friend was telling me she wants to read LS because it's MM but will pass on VS as it's MMF. While I understand perfectly her distaste for girl cooties spoiling the broth, it is a pity in this case because Seht's and Captain Ravnos' relationship in Victorious Star is a thing to behold, indeed. I myself refuse to read MM romances that have girl cooties - the Interstellar Service & Discipline books are the one and only exception.

I agree with Jenre that Seht isn't as developed as Aubrey here and that's a pity as I would have liked to know him better. We get to follow Aubrey closely but know nothing about how Seht grew up and what made him gravitate towards Aubrey and get attached to him so quickly. At least in those werewolf books I occasionally read, they have a mate out there they can sense. In this case, there's not enough about Skeldhi culture and nothing of Seht's past (or even his present) to help me understand his character.

Despite this, LS is a great intro to the IS&D series. I'll move on to Victorious Star now and hope that I won't wish Victoria were a Victor instead!

1ST REVIEW - 9 APRIL 2009:
Lost Star felt short even though it's novel length but it did complete Victorious Star in that we now know what the history is between Aubrey Ravnos and Seht, the skeldhi prince.

It tells the story of how Seht met the young Aubrey when the latter was a young guy, I think six months shy of 21 and on the run from the Moribund Company. Aubrey was caught by the Imperial Agency for his hacking into ships and taking them for joyrides. The ship he's serving on in lieu of imprisonment commits suicide after its crew is killed. Yeah, this is Morgan Hawke book so ships are "alive". They rape and kill.

Aubrey finds himself taken by Moribund and his Company (M & Co appear in all the Star books) and manages to escape but the torture during his capture by Moribund has left Aubrey at the point of death. He manages to escape, though I'm not sure how long he was imprisoned by Moribund. Aubrey's age, at this point, is also uncertain coz he's referred to as "kid" several times.

Moribund's ship comes under attack by the Skeldhis and in the ensuing fracas, Aubrey escapes. Moribund's guys are out looking for Aubrey, of course, since he's an extremely valuable commodity due to his programs. Seht arrives on the scene just in time to save Aubrey from recapture but has to turn him into a rehkyt (a skeldhi's hybrid sex slave) in order to save him.

Seht finds himself deeply attached to the human Aubrey and is heart-broken when he is told Aubrey needs to be returned to the Imperial Agency. They are separated but reunited after a period of time when Seht refuses to give up searching for Aubrey. Only now, Aubrey is an adult and commander of his own ship. He prefers to be called Ravnos and is even more determined not to be Seht's slave since his priority is to destroy the Moribund Company, not become a skeldhi's pet.

Seht couldn't ever give Aubrey up and has been looking for him. It's obvious Aubrey is much more than just a pet to Seht but why, we do not know. Towards the end of the book the two ubver-alphas meet up again, for the final face-off. The fight ends with Seht agreeing to the only thing that will keep him with Aubrey for the rest of his life.

I'll have to read Victorious Star tonight!

Although this is actually written as Interstellar Service & Discipline #3 I was surprised and hadn't realised it was a prequel to Victorious Star, which is down as the first in the series. Slightly confusing. I would have liked to have read this first, as it gives the story of the delectable Captain Aubrey Ravnos and equally so Prince Seht and how they met and how their relationship came about.
However, of course it doesn't start there. It starts with a young innocent, unworldly tech boy... Aubrey. The way he was captured by the evil leader of the Moribund company and his experiences in the tank pulled my heart strings. His decision to forfeit his own life rather than be used unwittingly in a destructive capacity, and the way Morgan Hawke wrote this reduced me to compassionate tears on Aubrey's behalf. His condition and then his meeting with the Skeldhi Prince, Deshryt Seht, the events that followed show Ms Hawke's capability to create two strong male characters who are not afraid of emotion and love...and reading of their lustful relationship, its development, the role changes, control and counter control was sublime. Commitment and obedience versus duty and justice, the individual's needs negated as duty to do rights, right the wrongs and helping the powers for good, are areas delved into in depth and detail, and as usual Morgan Hawke covers this so well in her superb story.
Rich characters and a story line that I became so involved in and so wanted the story to continue and not end.
It gives me the urge to reread Victorius Star again. I do hope there will be others like these, quality stories, which are a pleasure to read and so very erotic too.
Writing is well edited, a good standard of English, has to be five stars from me.

It's been over two years since I read book 1 in this series, Victorious Star, but I finally got around to reading this prequel, about how Ravnos (Aubrey) and Seht came together in the first place.

I enjoyed this book, but I did feel it was lacking a lot of things to make it truly great. Seht saves Aubrey, but in the process, totally changes who Aubrey is. I felt this part was well done, but then comes a long separation, and I really feel like we missed out on details here. We missed out on how Aubrey really became Ravnos, mercenary captain, how he adapted to his changed life and his changed physical needs and violence. I also felt the story would have been worlds better with Seht's POV, especially about what he did during their separation, how he really felt and what he went through on his search. The ending chapters just felt a bit rushed to get to the end, although I did enjoy the first half of the book a lot.

I enjoy EVERYTHING Morgan Hawke writes. This series is my favourite and I wish she would write more. I didn't think I'd like M/M so much. I was wrong. At least, when Ms. Hawke writes it, I'm interested. This was a good pre-quel to Victorious Star which I've read probably about 50 times. Ms. Hawke writes hot and steamy sex scenes. She's one of the few I'd categorize as great BDSM scenes. Her males are dominant and they know it. I like how none of the females are doormats. If the author is Ms. Hawke, I own the book.

Absolutely fabulous!! Loved it, can't wait to get into Victorious Star and see what happens next. Liked how we got to know the MCs and introduced to this universe without too much description and explanation. Loved the relationship between Seht and Aubrey and how both were strong characters, neither really wishing to cede to the other and how this was finally resolved.

Seht and Ravnos

I recently discovered that Lost Star is both the third book in the series and a prequel, so I paused my reread of book one to start this one. I dislike reading books out of order.

To my surprise, I found the story mostly engaging. However, there are parts that made me feel uncomfortable, like the Master/slave relationship.

The story started interestingly when Aubrey was captured by a villain and forced to assist in his illegal activities—killing innocent crews and stealing their ships. It was heartbreaking to read how cruelly Aubrey is treated and his desire to end his life, as he failed many times to escape his suffering.

Then, a Skeldi named Seht captures Aubrey and forces him to submit, transforming him into a rehykyt—a human hybrid concubine. They enter a Master/slave relationship, repeating a cycle where Aubrey is made to be something he’s not. This time, though, he's forced in order to be saved, not to hurt others. It’s still hard for him to accept this role, and he even considers dying to escape it. But over time, he slowly starts to accept it, at least a little.

The well-written story is full of details and depth, which kept me engaged and eager to find out what happens next. It turns out that Aubrey was actually an .

The story ends on a positive note, with the MCs finding happiness.

Now, I plan to go back and read book one to see how they ultimately take down Moribund, the villain who kidnapped Aubrey at the beginning. I’m also looking forward to the addition of a woman to their relationship, making it MMF.

Seht and Aubrey asleep

DISLIKES:
✘ Both MCs wanted to be in control. At first, Seht has the advantage, but later, Aubrey—who becomes known as Captain Ravnos—takes charge.

✘ The fight scene at the end. I prefer to have no physical violence between the MCs.

✘ Ravnos’s plan to leave Seht behind.

✘ There is no romance. The sex scenes were often a show of dominance and possession. Their aggressive behavior felt distinctly masculine, emphasizing their raw intensity. While there was love between the MCs, it leaned towards the sadistic and savage. That said, there were still a few scenes which I enjoyed. 🔥

✘ Seht’s POV is not shared. I wanted to learn more about his background, thoughts, feelings and motivations.

This is the story of how Ravnos and Seht of Victorious Star (Interstellar Service & Discipline, #1) by Morgan Hawke met.

Seht saves Audrey/Ravnos' life. They start a relationship but are separated for almost 10 years. During that time, Seht searches all over the universe for Ravnos. Meanwhile Ravnos, the ungrateful bastard that he is, does his best to avoid ever running into Seht. Admittedly during the separation, Ravnos was fighting the good fight and dealing with enemy…but to just abandon the person who saved your life, without even a backward glance….that's just so cold and heartless.

I now have to go back and reread Victorious Star in the context of what I now know about Ravnos and Seht.

I have mixed feelings about reading science fiction some of it I like some I don't this one I liked I have been wanting to read this book for awhile. This is the first book in the" Interstellar Service & Discipline Series". Aubrey was a tech engineer with a dirty little secret that the Moribund Company was willing to destroy everyone and everything to get their hands on. When Deshryt Seht, blood prince of Skeldhor, saved the dying boy's life, it set off a contest of wills as strong as the call of their blood. Unfortunately Aubrey has one more secret that severs their relationship before it can truly begin. This was a hot M/M BDSM book with some pretty hot sex scenes. This was my first time reading this author this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

This is a pretty quick read, and I simultaneously felt there is too much and too less.
I liked:
The fast-paced storytelling
Getting thrown right into the story
The sentinent spaceship and how you don't just pilot a spaceship but become one.
The sci-fi setting

I really, really disliked:
The double non con from both MCs with each other
How said sentinent spaceship got the information she needed - that's so not ok.
The insta love
How the timeline jumps 10 years ahead.

And lets talk about the too much: the prince is a mix of: alpha, vampire, Dom/Sub switch, Cyborg, has not one but two dicks, wants total obedience, but explains nothing before enslaving his insta love?!

At this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to continue with this series.

Wow, this was intense. I recently read the first book in this series and now I regret not reading this one first. It was a great introduction to Aubrey and Seht. There was such an intense connection between these two in the first book and so much history under the surface that wasn't explored, I just knew that there had to be more to it.

I'm thinking of Morgan Hawke as someone who will stretch my comfort zone because her books are pretty intense when it comes to BDSM but she truly is a master of her craft. I can't help but be drawn in by her storytelling. I will definitely be continuing on with this series!

Excellent story and the beginning of what hopefully is an excellent series. Ravnos is out for vengeance on the entire Moribund Company and Seht is out after Ravnos who as once his unwilling slave. The two strong men meet in the capitol city of the Republic of Caribbean Stars which is Ravnos's home base. Ravnos is no longer the weak, ill young man he was when he was held by Seht. A physical power play for domination, both physical and sexual, soon breaks out between Ravnos and Seht with the winner taking all.
A tight, intriguing story that reads smoothly. I couldn't help but love the two men and their shared quest. Highly recommended.

Sweet! Amazing sci-fi plus m-m erotica. There's lots of great sci-fi out there, and lots of m-m erotica, but a high quality combination of both is a rare beast indeed.

I would rate this 5 stars, but after all these years, I'm still a snob about pure sci-fi not having low-brow smex in it.
Even if it's really amazing man-smex that actually does enhance the story!

This is the third book in the series, but chronologically the earliest. Something I didn't know when I read it, so I was peasantly surprised to find the "continuation" of the characters' story in "Victorious Star".

Loved getting to know Seht and Ravnos better after reading Victorious Star. Couldn't help but feel there was more story to tell in this novel; I felt rushed in some places. Also, the characters once again 'fell in love' a little too quickly for me. Still, loved the characters and it was enough for me to surrender my disbelief.

I'm the minority of haters

I didn't completely hate this book, but I won't be singing it's praise either. I much rather have 5 sorry of Aubrey seeking revenge than the romance I was given. I think I just really disliked Seht because he forced Aubrey into a BDSM/Sex slave relationship against his will.

This book wasn't bad. It's short so that's to be expected.

It is a prequel to Victorious Star however I ended up reading it AFTER books 1 & 2. This book is about Seht and Aubrey who we get more info on in book 1. This book wasn't as well developed as book 1 was. In fact I found that when Seht that we didn't see that development in the relationship. They barely knew each other. Character growth and development could have been better. In book 1 we see more of Aubrey (Ravnos) and Seht and their interactions. We also get to see HOW Aubrey is now Ravnos it was interesting due to him being half human now, even though they basically say he isn't human at all.

During the story there is a point where Aubrey and Seht are separated. In the story, Aubrey mentions getting all this stuff done over the course of 1 year, later the narrator mentions that its been years, and then even later that it's been 10 years. This screwed me up in my visual because I wasn't sure exactly how long had passed. I still don't know and it wasn't clarified.

Over all the book was a hot, and quick read, but if you're looking for more substance that's not here. That being said book 1 actually has a well developed plot, and great steamy hot sizzling moments as well as the characters appear to have more going for them.

Skipped book 2, because I needed more of Ravnos (or should I say Aubrey?) and Seht. This is basically a pre-quel to book 1, "Victorius Star", covering Seht and Ravnos's backstory.

I'm absolutely enamored with Seht, who's a natural dominant, yet he lets Ravnos call the shots. They are such an intriguing pair. There was a comment in "Victorius Star" about them needing a female to balance them. I don't think it was a female, so much as a submissive. Seht gave up his dominance over Ravnos, because that was the only way he could keep him. The threesome allows him to play dominant.

In a way, this book was more intense than "Victorius Star". The raw passion between these two men is palatable. They just can't decide who's in charge, at least not comfortably.

Sometimes I do comparisons between books because while reading the book screams a connections to previous books I read. This isn't one of those cases. But, after finishing this book, I sat down and tried to think of other m/m pairs where there wasn't a natural D/s relationship (either of the kinky kind or just in terms of personalities). Where the men are basically both dominant and both on an equal footing. Who bows to whom? Who bottoms to who? Do they switch off.

In the Anita Blake world, when Jean-Claude and Asher were a couple, who topped? Who would top now? Like Ravnos and Seht they seem to have flipped roles. Like Seht, I would say Asher was the more dominant man early on in their relationship. But now, Jean-Claude, like Ravnos is calling the shots. And, yet, we still haven't seen Jean-Claude and Asher on stage together.

Then there is Jean-Claude and Asher's menage a trois with Julianna. She too kept two dominant men together. Anita, on the other hand, is dominant all on her own. Clash of three dominants.

So, yeah, didn't mean to take up half of the review with the compare and contrast, but Ravnos and Seht have me thinking about dominant men sparking off each other. It really is as intriguing as a natural D/s pair.

If you didn't guess by now, this and book 1 are highly recommended. I'll get around to book 2, which features a different group of characters, sometime soon. (And not Jared's soon. *g*)

The problem with reading really good books again a good decade later is facing the fact that the author is clearly not planning to give you more of their story. Not that anything was left unfinished, only, I get attached to characters. In this case, Seht especially.

I love their switch dynamic when they first come together again as grown men.

By the way, for me this was the perfect blend of sf, sf romance, and sf erotica. The sex is plentiful, but the surrounding story is just as compelling. And, most of all, the characters are unforgettable.
