I received this book as a Christmas gift from my mom, and we initially thought it was a great find, considering my background as a writer and editor in Baltimore (2006-2010) and my interest in true crime. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major disappointment. I can't recall the last time I read a book this poorly written—perhaps an editorial for the high school newspaper?

Ed Okonowicz's writing is deeply problematic, marred by blatant racism and an outrageous bias that brings shame to the field of journalism. His work lacks the nuance and integrity expected from an author. If Okonowicz were a white woman with a podcast, he’d probably be a billionaire by now. This book seems tailor-made for those who support the prison-industrial complex and harbor prejudices against people of color.

It’s baffling how this slim volume has managed to garner over 3 stars on Good Reads, a platform notorious for its candid and often harsh reviews. The book’s rating is a mystery worthy of investigation by Dateline or 20/20.

Informative Quick Read

If you’re from Maryland or have any interest in its history or the histories of criminal acts in the area (or even in the US) this book is a must read. Factual, to the point information on the crimes and the criminals, their backgrounds and the social and political climates of the times at which these crimes were committed. Brief interjections within various chapters included histories of Baltimore (the city) and the history of capital punishment in Maryland. It features several well known killers, including the Beltway Snipers. Even the lesser nationally recognized murderers remain fascinating cases. The concept of Mardi Gras criminals was particularly fascinating as someone who has grown up almost exclusively within the “age of the internet”. Overall, an easy to read informative book packed with many interesting facts and histories.

My red flag may or may not be enjoying true crime...

I wasn't aware of all of the crimes covered in this book, so in that way it was informative. However, I did not enjoy the author's outdated portrayal of survivors/victims of crimes as well as his misconceptions regarding race, gender, class, etc. A book of its time for sure.

This is a quick, interesting read that has the same structure and energy of “Forensic Files.” Most of these stories I wasn’t familiar with, and as a Marylander, I’ve done lots of research into the true crime of my home state (one case even took place in my hometown!) Well written with lots of interesting sources cited for further research.

Read for Criminal Psychology class.

Albeit rather short, it is informative, accurate and accessible but not to the point of feeling like it has dumbed down the information. Chose the book because it's based upon events that happened where my campus is located. Recommended.

A short interesting read featuring crimes in Maryland. Although I was aware of many of these cases, I learned new information about each one.
