Orange Sinclair #1

Goblin Mischief

Rate this book
A goblin and an FBI agent walk into a bar...

The only reason I'm not in federal prison for domestic terrorism is because the FBI can't arrest someone for being a goblin. Yet.

And it turns out, I'm not just any goblin. My estranged father was the most powerful hobgoblin on earth, and he didn't leave an instruction manual. I'd be just fine with the family pearls. Instead, I gain a bunch of magic I don't understand and accidentally destroy a priceless monument before I can figure it out.

Now I'm stuck on the wrong side of the country in the world's most uptight city, Washington DC, helping an FBI agent who does not believe in fairies with her first paranormal investigation. A supernatural creature is killing people and leaving nothing but a bit of colored sand behind. It's not me, but nobody else in law enforcement believes that.

The killer is so far out of my weight class it would be funny if his final target wasn't in the highest echelons of government. I have only days to escape from jail, clear my name, and figure out how to bring him down before he destroys the world as we know it. Oh, and flambés an insignificant goblin and the one person who's earned my trust.

“Goblin Mischief: An Orange Sinclair Novel” (Supernatural Investigators Series #1) by Kyler Anne Ford ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Urban Fantasy. Location: Washington DC, USA. Time: The week before Christmas until Presidential Inauguration Day, present.
NOTE: When you get the ebook, you also get a link to download the prequel.

Helping the FBI save Washington, DC from evil supernaturals.

PREQUEL: “Chimera: An Orange Sinclair Short”. Orange Sinclair is a 24-year-old anthropology major at UC Berkeley. The week before Christmas, she travels to Washington DC to retrieve her late, estranged father’s locked wooden box. There she is accosted by people with the same folded ear mutation as she and her father. She’s shocked to learn her father was the Goblin King, which makes her half-human/half-hobgoblin. As a hobgoblin, Orange must be careful talking to others, or she could trap herself into making bargains with them.

THIS BOOK: “Goblin Mischief: An Orange Sinclair Novel”. Orange made a bargain with FBI Agent Laura Scharf to keep herself out of jail. She helps Scharf with murder scenes, morgues, and garden gnomes, and fights off murderous paranormals. On New Year’s Eve, they investigate the murder of a senator’s intern in an Irish bar, which is covered in mysterious blue dust. They discover a supernatural creature is threatening the most powerful people in the world. Law enforcement and other supernaturals believe it’s Orange, and put her in jail again. She needs to escape from jail, clear her name, and bring the supernatural down before he destroys the world.

Author Ford has created a snarky, knock-knock joke loving, slightly orange-tinted, caring protagonist who is learning on the run. She’s no Lane (Bad Girls Bite) or Rachel (The Hollows) yet, but she aspires to that level of awesomeness. Ford adds situations where very different characters have to work together to survive-and end up building friendships and trust. Her book is filled with battles, wild chases, humor, and compassion. I can’t wait to read the next book! It’s 4 stars from me🌵📚💁🏼‍♀️ Thank you to Freebooksy, Millennium Java Press, and Kyler Anne Ford for this ecopy.

Follow the blue sand!

As a hobgoblin, Orange Sinclair has to be very careful when she talks to others or she can inadvertently wind up making a bargain with them and trapping herself into honoring it. That’s how she came to be in the predicament she is in already. She made a bargain with FBI Agent Laura Scharf and nothing she does seems to satisfy the deal she made. Not helping with murder scenes, visiting morgues, garden gnomes, or fighting off murderous paranormals. If she could just figure out how to open the box her father bequeathed her maybe things would be different but she isn’t going to hold her breath waiting for that to happen.

Kyler Anne Ford has really delivered with this paranormal action book. There is mystery, drama, battles, danger, and humor. The plot had some unexpected twists and I enjoyed the character interactions. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

Numerous times in the book events which occurred prior to the start of the book involving the main characters are mentioned. They sounded very interesting and also seemed to have direct bearing on what was initially happening. I kept thinking I wished I could read about that adventure. Well, at the end of the book there is a link to the prequel story. Instead of that, I think the readers would benefit greatly to a prologue. At 257 pages, this book could have been fleshed out with that additional portion of Orange and Laura's first meeting, Jack and Orange's week together and provide more detail about Orange finding out about herself.

That said, as a big UF reader I had no problem following along and quickly picking up the scraps of info. dropped here and there through out the story. Goblins, or in this case, hobgoblin, is an unusual choice of a main character and the relationship Orange and Laura have is just different enough to be intriguing.

I do hate the name Orange though despite the reason given. I also hope there is more info. in the next book about the goblin community and why there are differences between Orange and the other goblin in this story. I'm looking forward to finding out.

Orange has plenty of challenges ahead of her, she has power, but not the know how of how to use it. She is helping FBI agent Scharf, on her latest case, which seems to have a supernatural/magical influence. Can they solve the murder? Or will the murderer get them first? I loved this intriguing story, it had humour, suspense, and magic. I loved Orange, she is determine and certainly unusual, and wants to do the right thing.

A snarky Goblin is crowned.

A world of fantasy emerges and becomes real as the characters come alive within your world as you read this well developed story. The hero emerges as she finds out who and what she is and accepts her own inner power and accepts her crown to save the day. Finding and accepting her own power to prevent a plot to kill the newly installed President. Snarky humor follows the unlikely heroine as stumbles toward success. A clean and enjoyable story well worth the time spent to bring you enjoyment if you love to read.

Different!

When a Goblin makes a DEAL with an FBI agent what could possibly go wrong? the answer practically everything. Great story with wonderful characters that spring to life on the page, lots of action magic, and humor fast-paced with countless twists and turns to keep you turning pages. This is one of those books that once you start reading it's almost impossible to put down, don't let this one pass you by it's a must read, Baz.

It was alright. While I liked that it was quirky and different,
I can't say I was impressed with "Orange" (also really hard to take someone seriously with that name).
Too much bumbling around. Plot holes, inconsistencies and things that simply made no sense didn't help matters either (like sudden unexplained new knowledge).
Or the use of words like "wended" or "speeded" (this one was used several times)

Awesome story

How often does a short, colorful, half-goblin half-human woman pair with a female FBI agent to save the president? Distinctive, funny characters learn who they really are in this action packed novel.

My only warning is you should read the prequel. I haven't yet and had minor trouble understanding a few references.
