I’ve been in love with her for two years.

The first time around, I screwed things up. I hesitated and the moment was gone.

I passed when I shouldn’t have.

Not a total loss. I gained a best friend instead of whatever we might have been.

Sydney is hands down the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ll do anything to keep her in my life. Even bury my feelings deep inside.

But one hot summer together at the lake filled with lots of teeny-tiny bikinis and I’m ready to risk it all for a second chance.

It’s time to take my shot.

(This is Shaw and Sydney's story!)

OH MY STARS!!!!!!!!!! Friends to lovers PERFECTION! I am so in love with Tanner and Sydney- these two just stole my whole entire heart and filled me with such joy and happiness. I was swooning and sighing and thoroughly charmed. How does RJ just keep getting better and better~ now my new fav in the series- a feel good story that kept me smiling and laughing. This is a story with such optimism and heart, and I could not love this book or these two any more!

Tanner is perhaps the swooniest RJ hero ever. He’s charming, sweet, and even though we met him prior books, HERE he truly shines. He doesn't take stuff too seriously but also so thoughtful and genuine. He's just perfect- fun and loving all at once. And I LOVED how RJ flips the trope on its head- of the two, he’s the vulnerable, he’s the emotionally open one. And I LOVE his big heart. And Sydney is just such a likable heroine- she’s stoic, patient, a bit sassy and sweet. Together they are just SO fun- and heart squeezing adorable.

This is definitely some of RJ’s strongest writing- chemistry and character voice really shine here. Both characters have such a distinct, consistent, and welcoming voice- we really get inside their hearts and minds, which amplifies this friends-to-lovers tension- we FEEL their turmoil. And the chemistry between these two?! Oh my. The banter, the sweet flirting, their eventual honesty. It is perfectly matched for a friends to lovers story- because it feels organic, natural, connected, the "known each other forever" authenticity- because they DO know each other. RJ also brilliantly changes the settings to isolate our characters- really forcing them to confront their shared history and emotional confusion. We really see them open up and explore this dynamic in a new and fresh way for the series, while RJ also keeps the college fun and sports elements central- even though we’re removed from campus and from actual sport.

Rebecca really beautifully captures the friends-to-lovers confusion- the longing paired with fear. There is something special about this dynamic/trope, because we have to believe that they are best friends, that they'd be perfectly happy staying only friends because the relationship is that important and special to them, while also adding in enough romantic tension so that we both FEEL it but also keeping it subtle enough so we can believe them not acting on it yet/not even seeing it fully for what it is. Rebecca knocks this element out of the part -we have so much platonic connection, so we see the magic of their relationship, while she also weaves in subtle clues there is more. Then she finds those magical catalyzing moments, the JOLTS that help them start to see those subtle moments for what they are- clues to their own hearts. It is SO natural here- the fluid shift from platonic moments into a romantic tension is so subtle that it makes their confusion, their tension, their dilemma feel more authentic. And even after they get together, RJ keeps the friendship dynamics central - while weaving in their new romantic dynamic-somehow everything changes between them but nothing does. THAT is what I love about friends to lovers- and that is why I think this is one of the finest.

We have just the right dash of angst, but nothing over the top. For the most part, this story just makes you FEEL good. It is light, swoony, and so sexy. I smiled, laughed, and awwwed- all the butterflies. This is a story that makes you fall in love with love. A story whose themes remind us to not hold back not waiting passively for the "right time" but embracing what is right in front of us. It reminds us how love can be sweet and simple, if you just open up your eyes to it. I could not love this story more- I have all the hopeful, happy tingles.

All the stars!

The reason why they never got together is so freaking stupid! And how unfair is the shit in their "friendship" to the people they actually dated. Can you imagine your man being naked or cuddling with his "friend ".......oh the fuck not! I'd buss her lip and break his dick! Da fuck!

Anywho I'm still reading,my crazy just needed an outlet for a moment....carry on

Basically they meet, there's an instant connection and shortly after a hot kiss, but she tells him she's got a 5 date rule for sex. He eases off, they hang out while he awaits a sign, she thinks he's lost interest.....neither of them open their dumb ass mouths.....time passes they start dating other people but remain best friends.
2 years later, he's dated eleventy billion girls, she's dated 100 guys.....his current girlfriend breaks up with him so he takes the h to his lake house for the summer
Lazy days spent drinking on the lake, parties, beers, a kiss that was a dare but wait! What if? What if they actually date?!!
OMG he's wanted this for 2 years! Shocker so has she....but he wants the 5 days..... A bitchy sister showdown, a storm and an appearance by his ex with some sex thrown in.....HEA!

Just a waste of 2 years in my opinion and very unfair to the girls he dated. I'm too old for this!

”I choose Sydney. I’ve chosen her a million times, and I’ll do it a million times more.”

Can I label this an accidental friendzone trope romance? Well, I am. So we met Sydney in The Fake and I’m pretty sure that Tanner has been sprinkled into the entire Smart Jocks series, so it was fun reading their story. They are two people who started off super attracted to one another, but somehow ended up friendzoning each other, yet still having some feelings, but also at some point realizing they didn’t want to ruin the friendship.

Anyway. Things change up some during their last summer together. Sure there are a few things that get in the way, but I’d still consider this a low angst, best friends to lovers read.

So if you’re craving more Valley U, and you want a fun and easy romance, then The Pass is where it’s at!

Maybe a part of me has always known my feelings for Sydney went beyond friends, but I've managed with the simple fact that she didn't feel the same. And I'd do anything to be in her life, even pretend I don't think she's the hottest girl on the planet.

Tanner and Sydney are best friends but one summer on the lake might change that.. 4.5 stars!

Returning to the world of Valley U and the Smart Jocks series has become something that I look forward to each time a new book is released. I've come to really love these characters and the world that Rebecca has created for them, and I love watching them fight for their HEA.

THE PASS is Tanner and Sydney's story. The first time they meet, the chemistry between them is off the charts as Sydney has been lusting after Tanner for months. As they continue to hang out, Tanner hesitates to make his move while Sydney wonders if Tanner sees her as more than a friend. When they find themselves alone at Tanner's lake house two years later, they no longer have an excuse to deny their feelings, and their attraction for each other ignites once again.

I loved how confident and badass Sydney was! She knew who she was and was unapologetic for it. Tanner was such a flirt and turned out to be possessive in a way that I just love. Their love story was believable and (mostly) drama-free, which is always a nice surprise in contemporary romance. I hope we get to see more from this series as I never want it to end!

3.5 "I've waited two years for this..." Stars!

We return to the Smart JocksSeries and the Valley U universe with book five; The Pass, giving us Sydney and Tanner's story. A couple that definitely had a moment, but rather than pursuing it further due to crossed wires, end up slipping into the friend zone.

I've never had this sort of instant chemistry with someone...

I love this series, and the characters that the author gives you are always easy to get along with, their story-lines are always a nice slow burn that gives you plenty of time to get to know each of them really well, whilst they explore their attraction for each other before taking things to the next level. This time it takes Tanner's most recent ex to point out that he is actually in love with Sydney, before he realizes it himself, and I loved his attempts to get the dating between them right before jumping into bed together, even though Sydney is totally on board with the jumping straight away!

"I want to give you an epic love story... You deserve that."

Sweet, funny, sexy and really well developed, my only gripe is the bitchy sibling situation that played out in the second half. I know it added a bit of drama to what was a pretty sweet and uncomplicated story line but its a personal taste thing and familial drama is never a favourite of mine. That said Rebecca didn't drag it out and I loved that Sydney gave as good as she got in standing up for herself.

"I want to own your body like you own my heart..."

A really enjoyable story, it was great to get a few glimpses of some of the previous couples, and I look forward to seeing who the author decides to give their HEA to next!

I always feel so guilty when I can't remember the main characters. Especially on a series I have been obsessed with and recommending to everyone. But to my defence I picked this series up over a year ago about a month before the last book released and binge read them all. And obviously loved them.

Rebecca's writing is really easy to read. And every time I pick up one of her books, I am instantly sucked in. I vaguely remember Tanner. But only because I remember Wes as team captain in his book having a hard time with him playing two sports.

Sydney on the other hand I cannot remember for the life of me and I wish I did because she was someone I liked. She was the perfect mix of girly girl and tomboy. And she was really down to earth and someone you could relax with.

The relationship between Tanner and Sydney felt really natural. I loved watching them navigate from friends to more. To start I was so nervous that there was going to be a heap of relationship angst and drama since they somehow ended up friend zoned. I figured there had to be a reason and that reason would pop up later and give me a heap of stomach clenching knots.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case. The whole book was just really easy to read and kept me turning pages to see how these two got to their happily ever after. And I enjoyed every part of it. This series has been great, and I can't wait for the next one.

everything i hate about friends to lovers..
and I don't like that trope even when done right but how this was painful...

they met and have an instant connection but she has five dates rule..he waits for her to signal she thinks he lost interest in her..nothing happens then we are suddenly two years later they are friends who have dated other people and just like that his girlfriend is all like "you are in love with your friend" he is yeah I just realized that when you told me so I should be with her..goes and says hey we are spending summer together on some sort of a lake house ..and they are a couple..his sister surprises them on the said lake..stirs drama..because suddenly she thinks they are not meant to be in a relationship..drama resolves..epilogue two years later they are engaged.. THE END!!

sister is still an asshole in my opinion.. will probably get her own book...blah

overall boring...

4.5 stars. What would happen if you were passed off into the friend zone by accident? That is what happens to Shaw. There is an instant connection between Shaw and Sydney but before he knows it, he is friend zoned, or so he thought.

After years of being best friends, he finally realizes what has been there before him the whole time. It only takes his (now ex) girlfriend to point it out. Sydney never really knew what happened and why Shaw backed off after the first night they met, but she knows she doesn't want to lose him as her best friend.

I loved these two because they were just so RIGHT together. Listen, I don't normally like friends to lovers books because inevitably one of them is pining away while the other just walks around oblivious to their feelings and they end up hurting someone in the process. I loved this book because no mater what, they made time for each other. I would say I felt bad for girls he dated but that would be a lie. No one holds a candle to Sydney and after they clear up the miscommunication, nothing is going to stop him from holding onto her forever. He will prove to her that she is his end game. There were characters that I wanted to punch.. hard, ahem Tara, but I love how everything was handled. I love this series and this is why I will continue to read Rebecca and all her sports romance! Thanks to Rebecca and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for an early copy of this book!

With the cold weather finally coming it was such a pleasure to read about a funny, crazy and hot Summer at the lake.

Tanner is a basketball and baseball player, he meets Sudney, a volleyball player, at one of the amazing parties at the white house. They easily become friends and even if there is a strong physical attraction between them they decide to not act on their desires because they think the other doesn’t feel the same.
Fast forward two years and their relationship is still strong as the first day making all their friends questioning it, but when they escape to Tanner’s lake house, to spend a relaxing time without thinking about the future before to go back to school for their last year, their real feelings start to show. Are they ready now to accept these feelings and to act on their chemistry risking their friendship?

I loved to follow Tanner and Sydney’s journey because the atmosphere was peaceful without any major drama and it helped to keep the reality away.

The Pass was a lovely friends to lovers story. It definitely was a good addition at the series, it could be read as a stand alone.
Rebecca Jenshak writing is always easy to read and her characters are relatable and lovable so the reader cannot not to cheer for them and their happily ever after.

Wow this is like the epitome of the friends to lovers trope! It was seriously soooo good!! The Pass is the 5th book in the Smart Jocks series. I honestly thought the series was done, but gosh I’m glad we aren’t!! Every book in this series has been great and this was no exception. This is Shaw and Sydney’s book and it’s a complete standalone. I think they’ve only appeared in one book before.

The book starts with when Shaw and Sydney first meet and their chance at dating each other, but due to some miscommunications they decide to just be best friends. Cue to two years later, their last summer before graduation, they’ve both had failed relationships mostly due to their friendship with the other person. When they are both finally single at the same time, and spending an entire month together at Shaw’s lake house, things quickly change between the two of them.

Shaw and Sydney were the ultimate best friends. They knew each other so well, and had this incredible rapport with each other. You couldn’t help but root for them! It was so easy to love both of them. Neither had a bad bone in their body. This was a super quick read and a perfect little escape from reality. I LOVED it, and I’m hoping this series just keeps continuing!

4.5 ⭐️ - Seriously, I cannot get enough of Rebecca Jenshak books.

Tanner and Sydney have been best friends for two years. They both somehow friend zoned each other when they first met, but they’re secretly in love with one another. Now they’re spending alone time at the lake all summer - and you guessed it, the love finally happens. So damn cute.

PS. Tanners sister is a huge bitch. I could’ve punched her.

Friends to lovers AND second chance at a first try? DONE PERFECTLY 👑❤️

The hero, Tanner Shaw, was present in every book of this series, being only a freshman in the first book. And the hero of the first book is his assistant coach now and Tanner is now graduating college and going pro. The story made a full circle and it made me EMOTIONAL to finish the series 😭🤣😍🫶

The heroine, Sydney Turner, was introduced in last book as the teammate of the previous heroine.

Sydney and Tanner tried to get romantically involved in the previous book, but their signals got mixed up plus a lot of miscommunication led to them being friends and turning into best friends kind of situation. Both want more, but are afraid the other person doesn't feel the same way and they are dreading to loose the friendship. If this is something that sounds frustrating to you, don't read it. But I happen to see how easy this kind of situation can happen irl, so it didn't bother me at all.

The characters from previous books are almost all absent here and only mentioned once or twice in passing, plus except the first few chapters that happen in the past and are set in college, the majority of the book is them enjoying their summer at the lake house, meeting new characters. The vibe of this book lacks the found family trope, but the friendship between the hero and the heroine makes up for that. They are in their own world and only need each other 💓🙌

I hated the hero's sister in this book and the way she created problems for the couple, offering her opinions when no one asked her and tried to sabotage their relationship. I don't care about her justifications and sorry excuses, she should've had some consequences for her shitty actions! 🤬😤

Have you ever forgone sleeping because you wanted to know how the story ended? It happened to me with this book.

I expected a happily ever after, of course, but it was actually the journey to get there that interested me. Sydney and Tanner’s friendship was compelling. I enjoyed their easy banter and the casual way they act with each other, that their sexual relationship doesn’t affect at all. The intimate scenes are sexy, sweet and funny–I loved that! There’s awkwardness and mishaps, and the characters felt real.

If the romance is the focus of the book, other relationships aren’t deemed less. Friends, family, they all bring something unique to the story, and make the main characters even more interesting.

There wasn’t much sport in this sport romance–at least not in a meaningful way–but Tanner’s struggles with his career’s choices were an interesting element too. And for once the female character’s sport career was as much important.

Funny, sweet, hot, and with just enough emotional struggles to keep you on edge, that’s a romance novel you don’t want to miss.

Quickie

- Series: Smart jocks #5 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #sport romance #best friends to lovers
- Triggers: N/A
- Main couple: Sydney Turner & Tanner Shaw
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 5/5
- + their casual friendship continuing when they start a romantic relationship, lovely!
- – sister dearest is a bitch (though I can of understand where she’s coming from)

In The Pass, the fifth book in the Smart Jocks series, we have Shaw and Sydney's, two characters that after the last book I was super curious to know their story. And this book brings a cute story, sweet and full of nostalgia since it seemed to me that this series finally came to an end.

The story of Shaw and Sydney is sweet and light of the kind that got me some laughs and sighs there over the course of reading. I loved seeing a little of their relationship as friends and after they admitted their feelings, the dynamic between them was great and it was clear that these two had to end up together. I loved all the characters, except Shaw's sister, she was a complete idiot during the book and I already hated her.

The book does not have much drama, it is more of a story two people who met and felt attraction for each other, but that friendship ended up prevailing and put the symptoms aside until one day they finally decided to act. I am happy that the author has given readers who like this series, their book.

Warm my heart with this best friends to lovers story.  It gave me all the fuzzy feelings. This book was perfection!!

Just when I thought we were done with the "White House" boys, we are back and better than ever!! Tanner and Sydney are absolutely the most adorable couple Rebecca Jenshak has written to date.

I don't know if this story is so wonderful because this relationship has had time to brew and bake properly or if Tanner and Sydney, in particular, just clicked off every single box on the YES, YES, YES couple goal list, but The Pass was amazing from the very first page until the very last one.

Tanner and Sydney had 100% chemistry, 100% friendship, and 100% everything clicking storyline wise. The words seemed to flow off the page and their rhythm was pure magic. The Pass, right here, is a reason why I love reading Rebecca's books, it was effortless.

From the first time Tanner and Sydney met they were instantly attracted to one another, but due to a miscommunication, they each friendzoned the other. Here we are two years later and while their friendship is stronger than ever, they are at a crossroads where they ask the question; what if they could be more? What would have happened if they had crossed that friendship line two years prior? What if, what if, what if?

Spending the summer together they ask one another these questions, taking a look inside pandora's box, but what happens when you cross the friendzone line? Once you unpack the box, things never go back in that box quite the same so are they ready?

Join these two friends on their journey and enjoy this amazing ride.

I just love the world that Rebecca has created at Valley. Every new story makes me love it even more!!
This is Tanner (plays basketball and baseball) and Sydney (plays volleyball) moving from best friend to more and I’m here for it alllll❤️
In the beginning of the book we get to see how they met and the undeniable sparks they had, but through some miscommunication they both thought they had been ‘friend-zoned’. Two years later and they have the most amazing friendship. I loved watching them discover what had been there all along. There is one person in the story that made me SO angry, but I guess that means she was written well 😂 I really tried to look at things from her point of view and it didn’t make it any better. But like any good HEA, the love they had for each other was stronger than other’s opinions.
If you are looking for a swoony and hot friends to lovers romance - THIS is the book for you!!! Can’t wait for more stories from Valley!!

This is a friends to lovers romance done right. I loved the couple, Tanner Shaw and Sydney. Their banter, their obvious deep respect and their love was so obvious even in written word. I loved how they progressed through the book, from the initial friend-zoning to BFF-zone to eventually, more than that. But what never changed was their mutual love and respect for each other. If you want to read a low angst but wonderfully done friends-to-lovers romance (with a little sports thrown in) this is a fantastic one. I’m so happy I received an early copy and I have read each and every book in this world so far (and have many of the books and audiobooks) and love to see the visits from the previous characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve only read the first book in the Smart Jock series where Tanner was first introduced, and I was intrigued and secretly waiting for his story. And whilst I am regretful I didn’t get to grow with him and experience more of his personality, I never felt like I was missing out on anything by jumping a few books ahead to his story.

Tanner and Sydney’s connection had a casualness to it that simply comes with years of friendship and great chemistry. Now, don’t mistake their decision to FINALLY act on their mutual chemistry as just a snap of the fingers and they’re together. They still circle the elusive line of friendship and more for a good part of the book, especially after both being placed in the dreaded friend zone and learning to deal with both their fair share of uncertainty and hesitation. But what I love about friends to lovers romances is the friendship and what that means for them not only as individuals but as a pair. They can be brutally honest and open with each other and always know they have a shoulder to lean on if needed. A perfect foundation for a relationship.

The Pass is a friends to lovers, second chance romance that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. It sure had me feeling that way. The swoon on Tanner’s behalf was just that, swoon worthy. I mean that boy could pull out some cheesy lines and the most adorable and thoughtful dates ever. Tanner and Sydney’s journey was sweet, flowed naturally and effortlessly, had a teensy bit of angst and of course some sizzling sexiness thrown into round out another perfect addition to the Smart Jocks series. I can’t wait to see where Rebecca takes the series next.

This author hits it out of the park with this wildly entertaining college sports, friends-to-lovers romance with its engaging storyline and remarkable characters. Her brilliant writing style and the way she tells the story fully captured my attention and I found myself so invested in the Tanner and Sydney’s journey that I was unable to put the book down. They may be my favorite couple yet!

The Pass is has that perfect combination of drama mixed with humor and sweetness along with several swoonworthy, kindle melting moments. Tanner definitely falls into the book boyfriend category while Sydney is the kind of girl I’d love to be friends with. I adored the two of them together as the author beautifully illustrates their soulmate connection.

The Pass is book 5 in this author’s Smart Jocks series, but it can be read as a standalone. If you are looking for that perfect friends-to-lovers romance, then I definitely recommend this book.

I voluntarily read an early version of this book. All opinions are entirely my own.

I received an ARC for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was pretty good. I had only read book one and didn't know all of the characters involved in this one, but it was easy enough to keep up with.

This was book is also pretty drama free which is a first for me with contemporary romance. I actually enjoyed it and it felt refreshing.

Sydney and Tanner are what happens when friends can no longer stay in the friendzone. I loved it and can't wait to catch up on all the books I missed before this one!

Rebecca Jenshak is a brilliant storyteller and has recently become one of my favorite author's after devouring all of her books in the Smart Jocks series. The Valley U universe is one of my favorite book worlds to get lost in and I am absolutely addictive to all aspects of this world. With each new book I found myself falling more and more in love with her characters and their storylines that she so beautifully crafted.

The Pass is the newest installment in the Smart Jock series and tells the story of Tanner and Sydney, characters that we met in previous books. When I learned that Tanner Shaw was getting his own story (yes this girl feel head over heels for this character), I was so freaking excited and luckily I didn't have to wait too long to get my hands on his story since I waited so long to read these books. Perhaps the dumbest...or maybe actually the smartest decision of my life since I was able to jump from one book to the next and only had to wait a few weeks instead of months.

Anyways back to Tanner and Sydney. These two were meant to be from their first encounter but a misunderstanding led them to becoming best friends, but you know what they say, patience makes the heart grow fonder. Their friendship created a special bond between them and helped to form a deeper connection between the two of them. Their chemistry was on point and had my heart swooning the entire time. These two gave me all the feels in this sweet, sexy and hilarious romance that captivated my heart and left me completely satisfied from start to finish.

SO DAMN GOOD!!!! I LOVED Tanner & Sydney❤️❤️❤️ What happens when you get to spend the summer at your best friends Lake house? The best friend you had always liked as more but didn’t know the feelings were mutual? You get to experience the BEST summer of your life! Watching these two express their true feelings will have you in all your feels! The chemistry is HAF! This book is jam packed with all the words that will have you wanting more & more. There is one character I wanted to smack so bad but in the end it is all good. Be ready for one beautiful love story of two best friends.
