Roaring Rogues #2

Deceived by Desire

Rate this book
Changing into a lion is all fun and growls—until it isn’t.

Cursed into the form of a lion without nightly sex, Lord Nash Hammond wants only two things—his liquor strong and smooth, and his wenches wild and willing. What he doesn’t need is a virgin!

Meet a Shakespeare-quoting shapeshifter who wants nothing to do with love…

Nash senses the man across from him in the cramped stagecoach is trouble, a danger to the veiled woman accompanying her lofty “protector”. Nash knows he’s no hero, yet she keeps asking for his help. And how is it the vexing female knows so much about his secrets? Ones that could rip her apart if she only knew it…

And the spunky “lady” from the streets who masquerades as another man’s mistress…

Blessed with the second-sight—or cursed, depending upon which relative she believes—Laney sees her two possible futures: bleak and a soon-deceased victim (ack!) or frolicking with her fellow stagecoach passenger: a glittering-eyed, rough-hewn gentleman—who’s anything but.

The miserable rip who’s already stepped on her dress, who keeps staring…

Nash is surly and rude and resistant to her every effort to speak with him. When they stop for the night and she overhears him order a “strumpet” to bed, Laney takes the doxy’s place, convinced she can pretend well enough. After all, she’s pretended to be a mistress for years. She’ll satisfy his needs, but refuse his money—demand he listen and help her instead. Then she’ll be safe.

Until, along with her body, Nash starts to claim her heart as well.

Reader Advisory: While Deceived by Desire is laugh-out-loud funny in places, it contains a short *vision* of violence and brief references to past abuse. Beyond that, expect a fun and sexy good time because…

Changing into a lion is all fun and growls—until it isn’t.

A lifelong Texan, Larissa writes steamy regencies and sexy contemporaries, blending heartfelt emotion with doses of laugh-out-loud humor. Her heroes are strong men with a weakness for the right woman.

Avoiding housework one word at a time (thanks in part to her super-helpful herd of cats >^..^<), Larissa daydreams about brownies, chocolate-covered peanuts, and 007. She’s been a clown, a tax analyst, and a pig castrator (!) but nothing satisfies quite like seeing the entertaining voices in her head come to life on the page.

Great story with a lot going on. It was one I had a hard time putting down. Laney needs to convince Nash to save her by buying her indentured servitude from the current owner. She’s afraid she might die if she stays as his servant. She knows this because she has visions. Nash wants nothing to do with anyone because of the mental scars left by too many bad decisions in his past. Getting him onboard was a major undertaking by Laney. The journey to that happy ending was not as care free as the first story in the series. In this story stuff gets real. The author sweeps you into all the intimate details of what makes these two characters behave and think the way they do. I liked both Laney and Nash’s characters.

Looking forward to the next story teased at the end of this one. I like this author’s story telling style.

You have to know that this story is the second instalment in a series. I really appreciate the series introduction since it clarified a lot of stuff happening that I would not have understood otherwise.

This story overlaps the end of the first one, a story I had previously enjoyed. This time, we are with Erasmus’s brother, Nash. He’s a hard nut to crack and he definitely is an acquired taste: he’s exasperated me quite a few times. He meets Laney, who’s in a dire situation unbeknownst her knowledge. Unless she makes a radical change to her life, she’s actually heading straight to her death. Together, they will change their fate and give Nash hope in life. Laney is a character I really got attached to. She’s clever, living with her own curse, witty, sharp and keeps Nash on his toes, giving him a run for his money. Some scenes are troubling, but everything will of course turn out fine. Can’t wait for what comes next!

He thought love was not for him.
In the grip of the change and horrified by his treatment of his brother’s fiancée, Nash is running away from London and meets Laney, a woman with a blessing/curse which gives her visions of the future.
There are multiple storylines in the book. Indeed, London is plagued by the murders of young women by a very elusive killer. The attraction between Nash and Laney is very much in evidence and although unwilling at the start, Nash feels compelled to protect Laney. And there is also The Den, the gaming hell exploited by Nash’s brother and Adam, a time-travelling American.

I really enjoyed the banter between Nash and Laney but I felt a little lost.

It said it could be read as a standalone but I think to get the rest of what was going on outside of them you needed to start with book 1. There is a blurb at the beginning to try and get you caught up but I still felt like I was missing something.

The jumping around between the stories and going back in time did nothing to alleviate the confusion.

I also felt some of the 'dirty talk' was a bit much for me.

I enjoyed the premise and the characters though so not a bad read.

Excellent story.
When on a coach ride Nash encounter a man he does not trust and a woman that he senses is fearful of the man he does not know what to do after all he has his own troubles and they are not minor. Laney has the second sight and knows she has to get away from the man who owns her because if she does not her life may end. Right there is where the book took hold of me I love paranormals/shifter books and this one was one of the better ones I have read lately. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

DECEIVED BY DESIRE is the second book in the Roaring Rogues series, and features Nash, who is currently beating himself up for the wrongs he thinks he has done. On a coach to Scotland, he is intrigued by a miss wearing hideous hats - complete with veils - who persists in speaking to him even when he doesn't want her to. What follows is a lovely story filled with humour and sexy times, as well as a dash of danger, as Laney tries to figure out her future as Nash bemoans his past.

Whilst loving the story between Nash and Laney, what I didn't enjoy so much were the quick trips to London and the time-hopping from one day to the previous one, or a few minutes earlier, for example. I know they are there to move the overall story arc forwards but they really didn't work for me. Instead of moving the story on, I found myself getting confused about what the point was, and reading past that to get back to Laney and Nash.

This was a great addition to the series and I can't wait to read more. It is Phineas' turn next and I look forward to finding out what happened to him on his wedding night. This is a wonderful series, full of humour and wit, as well as sexy times that will leave you blushing. Definitely recommended by me.

I received a copy of this from Booksprout and this is my freely given opinion.

I quite enjoyed the first book in the series. I find that Larissa Lyons writes with a light hearted, frothy sense of humour, with fun, humorous dialogue and quite enjoyed that in her previous stories, including book 1. This series is quite a mismash of a storyline - a paranormal, shape shifter regency erotic romance, murder mystery, with a time-travel element to it as well, as well as some BDSM. See what I mean about a mishmash?

This one also had a bit of that, but there were some darker elements to the natures and storylines of the characters that I found I did not enjoy as much. This story has elements of abuse, and homophobia in case those are triggers for people.

This is a continuation of the timeline from book 1, primarily following the younger brother Nash, with a bit of the storylines of Adam, Temperence, and Patience thrown throughout. So this breaks up the story a bit, and it is not as cohesive as the first story, but I suspect the stories will converge together and make sense in the future - I hope?

But the main story is Nash's story and he is still actively fighting the Change from occurring, while feeling guilt and self-hate over how he treated Francine in book 1. Not coping well with his brother and Francine's relationship, Nash runs away... no real plan, he just hops onto a mail coach and takes off. He is doing his best to be a surly, introverted boor, and ignoring his coachmates, which includes a foppish sot, and his paramour.

Said paramour is Laney is in dire straits. She is gifted/cursed with second site and knows that she is in danger from the man she is traveling with; she was indentured to a milliner and years prior he had bought her papers and kept her in the role of his mistress. She had a good life, was well treated, and never touched, because he used her as a ruse to hide his illicit relationship with another. But that has been found out and now he is making Laney the scapegoat for his frustrations and anger, as well as using her to prove his manhood to his family. Laney is afraid to go with him to his final destination. She sees other visions that target Nash as her saviour and the route to a happier, safer future, and she uses every opportunity to entreat him to intervene and save her.

Nash knows he is no hero and has his own problems trying to not turn into a slavering, fanged feline monster, and needs a willing wench to fornicate with to prevent that from happening. So when a heavily veiled Laney keeps approaching him to save her, he is not interested and rudely tells her to shove off. Laney comes up with a plan to pretend to be a paid wench at one of their inn stops, hoping that he would be satisfied enough with her services to buy her indenture off her current master.

Nash has a lot of trauma it would appear from their mother leaving them, as was discussed in book 1, and where his brother Erasmus took the route of being a patriarch and protector of the family, Nash appears to have a lot more anger, frustration, and loss of self/purpose/self loathing, and perhaps this contributes to how he sees and treats women? His interactions with Laney, initially seem very demeaning and hate filled, and it is hard to reconcile that with a growing connection between them later. There was a lot of dark elements in this story that were harder for me to enjoy as much as book 1; including Nash and his treatment of women as objects to be used, Laney's abuse at the hands of her current master, and how Nash treated her initially as well. The sex seems hot... but not buying the relationship so much.

But I am drawn to the story and wondering how the various elements will play out, including what is going on with Phineas, and what is happening with the murders in London, and how that affects what is going on with Francine's cousins, Temperence and Patience, and what the heck is Adam's quest and how he fits into things... so not giving up on this yet.

Laney was sold into servitude at the age of thirteen to a milliner. It was there she made a friend, Mary Delilah, who helped to refine her grammar and accent. At sixteen, she was indentured to a charming man, Reginald Tate. She expected to become his mistress, living in a fine house with lovely clothing. Why not, after all she had no family, or funds to rely on; he was very handsome and pleasant. It wasn’t long before she learned her true role as a front for Reginald to cover his true paramour, Neil.

Laney has limited second sight, a blessing her grandmother had told her. She would see two possible futures, depending on the actions she took the future would change. Reginald knew of this ability and sometimes made use of it. For the first three years he had been good to her. His brother, George John, was another story. The way he looked at her made her skin crawl, but she was safe enough, until….

George John had come upon Reginald and Neil together in bed and had immediately made demands that Reginald use Laney for that which he had paid for and send Neil away, or else. When Reginald found he wasn't up to the task of bedding Laney, his brother made arrangements for Laney and Reginald to take a trip to Scotland to become part of a group that would teach him how to be a man.

This is where the story begins, Laney and Reginald squished together, with other passengers, in a stagecoach headed to Scotland. Terrified for her life after having seen two visions, one showing her, her death at the hands of Reginald, while the other appeared to offer her a happy life with the stranger sitting across from them in the coach. All she had to do was persuade the grumpy man to buy the last year of her indenture from Reginald and she would be free. She’d also had a glimpse of his dark secret; it shouldn't be too hard to get him to agree.

Nash Hammond was running away from the curse, on the men in his family, that had consumed him, from the horrendous act of betrayal he had perpetrated on his brother's beautiful, gentle fiancé. Something about the woman across from him attracted him, drew him in, but he was not fit company for anyone. So, when she approached him for his help to get away from dandy, he turned her away with some very harsh words.

This is a standalone book that introduces Laney and Nash, while it tells their story. It took me a few pages to comprehend who was speaking/thinking since it was more in an oral storytelling format, not a lot of dialogue. But once I caught onto the story, I could easily follow along. Their connection, romance and paranormal abilities had a bit of a strangle hold on them, one they would have to overcome to be together.

This is the second book in a trilogy, that has a continuing storyline through all three books. This secondary, concurrently running tale, alternates in between Laney and Nash's tale. It was a little disjointed for me, I just wanted to get back to Nash and Laney. If I had read the first book, I may have had a better understanding of what was going and may have been drawn into sub tale more. If you enjoy your romances with a lot of spice, angst, with an outspoken heroine and a curmudgeon antihero, check this one out. There are a few visions that depict scenarios of abuse. I am looking forward to the Phineas’ part of the story.

At the front the author offers the reader some insights into the previous book, the Hammond curse and the characters that tie the books together. I have given this tale three stars but if I could have it would be three and a half stars. I did enjoy to the story and felt drawn to the main characters, their trials and the romance evolving between them in spite of their rocky lives. As in the beginning I hit a spot sometimes, where I found myself rereading a passage to catch who was speaking/thinking, this is where dialogue and separate POVs help. The continuing story that alternated throughout lost my attention until almost the end when I could piece it all together. 3.5 rounded up to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I love Lyons' style and fun wordplay, and became an instant fan with book1 of this series. Sadly, I didnt love this book nearly as much. I did enjoy Nash and Laney. Their biting interplay was heated and engaging. I just wish this book had focused on them alone. The fun and emotion are still there, but overall it is disjointed and suffers from lots of bouncing between different plotlines, uneven timelines, and multiple povs.

You could leave it at that, but I may feel the need for a little rant…

.

.

.

.

.

.

For me, it was a glut of povs. I think it was 8 in total, and with the exception of Tate, didnt add anything directly to this story. (Speaking of Tate, was there really a need for paragraph after paragragh of detailed descriptions of his, let's politely say, stomach and bowel ailment?!?) Other characters' thoughts may have relevance to the big picture eventually but why add them here and now---like WHY the brief glimpse from Patience, who has zero relation here?! Then there's the villian's ominous ponderings (which I practically never enoy in a romance anyway), where the plotline of the murders is barely even touched on in this book so seems especially unnecessary to bring down the mood here.

And then there are Adam and Temperance. While I love their characters, those scenes didnt feel like they belonged here either. Plus they were extra confusing, since we kept interjecting either in the middle of the action in present or after days or a week had passed in present, yet were still dealing with various scenes from the same SINGLE night in the past (some of which were already covered in book 1 and added little to nothing from that---and again had nothing to do with the action of this book or characters) It was very strange to me. It just felt like the author didnt want us to forget those characters or that moment and decided to stick more throughout here to keep it/them alive in our memory. It really didnt add much except expand Tyndale's character a bit (and make you wonder if it is him or Adam that Temperance ends up with) and introduce a little mystery about Adam's sister.

All of which could have been dealt with some how or where else and not muddied things here, especially if the author intends for each to stand alone as mentioned.

I still love the author's overall style and humor, and I am looking forward to more in this series, but this one had a few issues for me.

I love this engaging book! The author has already made it onto my favorite authors’ list before with her playful and sexy writing style and this book definitely confirmed that. I instantly fell in love with Nash's character. On one hand he's grumpy and sexy, on the other he's an oversized kitty cat in need of petting. Laney was also very likable.
Like the previous book in the series, which you should definitely read before this one (the plot ties in and overlaps), this story is packed with humor, suspense, mystery and really hot love scenes. And as with the previous book, there are cliffhangers. I'm already looking forward to the sequel and resolution of the unanswered questions.

Nash, like the rest of his male relatives, is cursed and just his brother Erasmus, he needs sex to keep his transformation into a wild beast in check.
Tormented by his guilt and remorse after a wild night spent with his brother and Erasmus’ fiancée (book 1), Nash flees London and boards a stagecoach headed north.
On the journey he meets the mysterious Laney, to whom he immediately feels attracted, even though she is veiled.

Laney has had visions since childhood. When she foresees in one vision her terrible future with Reginald, a man who bought her indenture to disguise his homosexuality but is now forced by his brother to prove his manhood, and in another a happy future with Nash, she tries to persuade Nash by all means to buy her indenture from Reginald…

If you are a fan of sizzling hot shifter-historical romance novels with humor and mystery, you are sure to love this book!

Even though you could enjoy" Deceived by Desire" as standalone, it was written as part of trilogy and it would be much more enjoyable to read after reading the first book," Ensnared by Innocence".The author does include a list of the characters that will be returning from the first book at the beginning for those who have not read the first or for those that might just like a reminder but if you have read the first book, you will flow in to the second book more readily. Just my recommendation ;even though the main story of Nash and Lainey is a standalone romance. This is a steamy romance so if that offends you , know that up front. There is also a plot, character development, witty banter and sweetness to round it out but definitely includes many well- written yet explicit scenes. I enjoy Ms. Lyons writing style and easily fall in to her stories. I am not usually a big fan of shape- shifter tales but Ms. Lyons writes them as well or better than those that I have previously encountered. Somehow, she melds the dichotomy of their personalities to be not only plausible but possible. But then , I believe in fairies. I found this book as engaging and enjoyable as her previous offerings and nice but not- quite-innocent escape. I am already anxious to read Phineas' soon to be released tale. Thank you to Book Sirens for supplying an ARC.

Adore This Author and Book!

Can I say that I absolutely adore this writer and her books? I haven’t been able to read for a while because of back-to-back cataract surgeries, but what a delight to come back to a new Larissa Lyons book! Regency is my favorite subgenre of romance, but I’ll admit that reading so many of them can get stale after a while. But Ms. Lyons books are never that… and they help me hit my “reset” button! Even when she writes “straight” Regency, they are imbued with whimsy and have well-drawn characters. This is one of her more unusual Regencies. Can you say humorous steamy shifter Regency? Such a unique, but fantastic combination. As soon as I started reading the book, I was drawn in by the deep characterization; I felt like I was right there in the coach with Nash, feeling his emotions and seeing what he was seeing. I love it when a book immerses me in its world like that. Once I started, I was loath to put it down. I love that the author includes background information about the series before this story starts, giving a little backstory about key characters and their relationships; even this is humorous! I’m usually a stickler for elevated or era-appropriate speech, but I give this author more slack than most because the writing is just so engaging and such a pleasure to read. If you love Regency and don’t mind one that’s unusual, check out this book!

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This book is a direct continuation of the first book, which seemed a bit shocking when it comes to Regency romance steam. I liked that there was a continuation or parallel storylines of what had happened at the end of book 1 in London and Nash's departure. The situation between Laney and Nash seemed very antagonistic at first… And I wasn't a fan of his whole "pig princess" thing. Their chemistry together though was undeniable especially after she takes the place of a whore. I am also intrigued and frustrated (in a good way!) by what's going on in London with Tempest and Lord Tyndale and Adam. So many questions that I hope will be resolved in the third book (when is it coming out again?). I'm not used to the language used by Ms. Lyons and it can be a distraction at times especially when it seems very frivolous. When Nash and Laney get their shit together it is very sweet and steamy and I am HERE FOR IT. Lion tongues goddamn. I can't wait to read about Phineas.

Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Heart flutters: ❤️❤️

A thoroughly enjoyable read. It didn’t quite grab me as much as the first book in the series but that was truly outstanding. Perhaps it didn’t flow quite as well because there was quite a lot of archaic language at times and the kindle dictionary didn’t know any of them.

Laney Buckley, FMC, hasn’t had the easiest life by far but she’s strong, spirited and willing to take chances to get a better one. I really liked her. Nash Hammond, MMC, a second son, privileged, directionless and under a curse to be a lion shifter.

Although this can be read as a stand alone story I think you will definitely get much more enjoyment if you have read book one in the series first. There are interconnected characters and an emerging storyline that add to the experience. I can’t wait for book three.

I am rapidly becoming an avid fan of Larissa Lyon’s books and would definitely recommend them to all who enjoy regency romance with a bit of spice and even more so with the added bonus of shifters in the mix.

I had such high hopes for this sequel. I truly enjoyed the first in this series, Ensnared By Innocence which was a great romp. But sadly, Deceived By Desire doesn't live up to it's promise.

There's a point when an author tries to give the story and her readers absolutely everything, and ends up going too far. That's what happened here. With jumps in everyone's POV, often without need, ramblings, character history and remembrances, it was all just too much to be enjoyable.

While Laney, which I believe was a pet name for Eleanor, but I'm not sure, was a likable character, Nash was not. I found myself not believing his redemption in the story.

All the elements for a great series are within Ms. Lyons grasp. I believe a good editor could help keep her on track by not allowing her story to get away from her. I hope she goes back and reworks this story and reissues it.

2 stars, with an extra 1 added because I believe this story could be more than it is right now.

I really liked the enemies-to-lovers relationship of Laney and Nash. What I didn't like was the bouncing around between two different storylines. Laney and Nash would be having a flirtatious conversation and then the next chapter would be about a couple of guys that were working in a club dealing with some troublesome females. I read the first book of the series some time ago. I vaguely remember that these characters were in the first book but lots of their storyline went over my head. I really would need to read the 1st book again.

The story of Laney and Nash had a satisfactory ending and it looks like they will be featured heavily in the next book of the series. The secondary storyline, which finally got interesting, ended in a cliffhanger. I definitely want to read the next book but I will need to go back and read the first one again. I received a free ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest review.

3.5 stars. I picked this story up because the premise of a historical shapeshifter romance intrigued me. The story was multi POV, with mostly lead POV, but LOTS of other POV. I found this made the story quite complex to follow (though it is fairly long to allow for enough detail in each POV). I haven’t read the first story in the series but don’t think that made a huge difference; this was just a very detailed read. I enjoyed the lead characters, Nash and Laney, and their careful relationship development. I enjoyed their intimate scenes. I appreciated the way secondary characters were built in and the story happening away from them was told simultaneously, though it did make for needing to read carefully.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A family cursed by an African Shaman. They turn into Lions after the age of twenty-five and during a certain time of the year. The only thing that can help is sex.

Laney is stuck on a stagecoach with Reginald. Red hair, gay, and may kill her soon. She is afraid. Sometimes she is gifted with visions. That was one. She had no idea where she was going or what was to happen when they got there. I must admit to a little confusion when switching back and forth between stories.

The characters are funny and witty, especially Laney. He is handsome and amorous. Boy, do they have fun in that dept. I thank you for letting me review this amazing novel.

Oh I just loved Nash! This is book two in the Roaring Rogues Regency Shifters but is a standalone. This book is about Lord Nash Hammond and Laney/Eleanor. Laney has the gift to see in to the future, and Nash has a curse of being a lion shifter. There are a lot of characters in this book and lots of locations so be prepared for the back and forth. I enjoyed Laney and Nash's relationship building to their HEA. It was an entertaining, adventurous love story with lots of funny parts in it.
I can't wait to read Phineas' story!

A Leo and A Visionary

Laney needs to get away from her current situation. Nash is running away from London and the situation there. At first he acts abominably, but soon attraction on both parts takes over. There’s lots going on in this story: there’s two storylines (Laney and Nash’s and the one in London) on two separate timelines, as well as plenty of verbose descriptions. I quite enjoyed the witty repartee, especially the bawdy talk between Laney and Nash. This overall series is building up the tension - I’m excited to see where it goes.

Loved the second book of the Roaring Rogues Regency Shifters. Nash proves to be a rogue with a tendacy to hide behind his "blessing" so that he can't make attachements. Eleanor, Laney, has visions that will help Nash accept his fate and save her at the same time. Nash and Laney explore their chemistry with teasing, questions, and a sexuality that is beautifully written. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I loved the continuation of the series, but multiple points of the book confused me. The back and forth between storyline and Nash continually playing his word games was distracting. I felt like Larissa tried to fit two books into one. The back story with Tempest and also the killer prowling could have been a different part of the next book. The story was great but felt WAY too disjointed. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I look forward to the next book in the series and am really enjoying Larissa's writing.

This was the perfect follow up to Erasmus's story. I truly love the shifter parts and Laney's reaction to Nash as he changes. She accepts things as they are. I liked that she's a seer , and she saw happy cubs in their future. The book oozes chemistry raw and real. I wish there were shifters, because I'd love to nab one for myself. Seeing Nash change and grow was gratifying. I'm anxious for Phineas's story. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion .

The book starts with a summary of the first book, which was very helpful because I read “Ensnared by Innocence” a while ago. The books contain two stories- one about the main characters- which ends with the book- and another one which continues through all the books, a unique idea. But I thought that the second book of the series “Roaring Rogues Regency Shifters” was partly a little lengthy, though I enjoyed the story of Nash and Laney.

The base story is great but it is over the top with sexual descriptions. I enjoyed parts of the book, I am not a fan of swapping back and forwards between two stories even if they are related in some way. I felt the last part of the book could have been wrapped up much quicker without the very similar descriptive sexual encounters, felt like it was padding the book out.

It took me awhile to find the rhythm to read this book. The shift between time and location was unexpected. I wasn't sure I wanted to continue, but Nash and Laney are interesting characters and gave me the push to keep reading. They each have their own secrets. If you've read the previous book you are familiar with the curse and many of the connecting characters.

plans and their outcome
I enjoyed this book tremendously, two unusual characters not willing to commit to destiny, fighting evil and their own desires, risking everything instead of ever thinking to submit to what society deems right. There is sizzle, laugh out loud moments, mystery and danger - what else can a reader ask for?

I liked this one, a bit confusing at first and at times I found though. I did love the chemistry, the drama, the banter, and the steam that this book offers. I did read the first book and will read the next. I overall recommend it.

I don't typically read shape-shifter stories, but when this series came to my attention a few days ago, something about them drew me in. I can't believe I now have to wait to learn about Phineas, Adam, and Francine's cousin (whose name has slipped my mind in this moment). *sigh* Anyway, Nash shifted!! How glorious!!
