Can a virgin and his dad’s best friend find a way to be together forever with their mersquid fated mate?
Larkin isn't sure if he's got his life together or not, but he knows his love life is completely stalled out. He’s never going to get up the courage to tell Dean, his father's best friend, how he feels about him. Namely that Larkin has been in love with Dean from the moment he figured out he was gay. But can he really risk everyone’s friendships by confessing how he feels?
Dean suspected that his best friend's only son might have a crush on him. When he walks into his bedroom and finds Larkin on the bed and having a grand time with some of Dean’s dirty laundry, Dean can't avoid the facts. Or can he? Their fishing trip is interrupted when hauling abandoned fishing lines onto Dean's boat brings a blue, tentacled person in need of help onto the deck. Now Dean and Larkin are tangled together as they secretly aid an ocean-dwelling alien's recovery.
Mo is the youngest child of a human and cecaelia, one of the first hybrids, who thought they were going to die in that mess of fishing lines and nets. But then they found themselves nose to toes with their fated mates, two human men who are clearly in love with each other. Mo's determined to help their mates see that the three of them are perfect together, especially while they're all confined inside an aquaculture farm. But as Mo heals, they have to figure out how to keep their mates without exposing the secret of their existence to an entire company of humans.
This novella has an age gap, m/m/m, and dad’s best friend story with two virgins and a guy in his forties who thought he was the grownup, some internal angst because somebody’s an alien, kinks for man-smell and gripping tentacles, hiding out in an aquaculture farm to raise snails, and a HEA ending that includes cameos from Book 1 characters.
The first book in this series was kind of cute and fun, so I gave this one a go. Sadly, this novella didn't work for me at all.
There was simply no character or relationship development.
The following happens in the span of a few weeks:
- Larkin, Dean, and two of Larkin's friends accidentally capture Mo. They all immediately accept and are totally chill with a human/octopus creature (Mo) who has tentacles, speaks English, and plays video games.
- Mo makes out with Dean and Larkin separately and together.
- Dean's been resisting Larkin's advances for years because reasons (Larkin is 20 years his junior and his best friend's son), but overnight sees Larkin as a man and accepts him as a mate. I love you's are exchanged.
- Larkin's dad finds out about Larkin & Dean, plus the mating Mo thing, freaks out for five minutes, and then starts chuckling and hugging Mo.
- Larkin's two best friend reveal they're together, which yay, but also how is this relevant in any way?
- Larkin, Mo, and Dean move in together. Larkin's parents are overjoyed.
And let's not forget my favorite WTF moment:
- Larkin is able to set up an entire abalone station, complete with feed, and get a permit to raise abalone, an endangered species, in less than one day. LMFAO. 🤣 So ridiculous, OMG.
In my county, it takes a minimum of 28 days to get a backyard CHICKEN permit, and chickens are hardly endangered.
I was so bored with this story, I skipped all the sex scenes. I just didn't care where Mo put their tentacles.
To be kind, I'm going with 2 stars, but I can't recommend this story and am officially breaking up with this author.
I liked this one but not quite as much as the last. I just enjoyed this who series so much and though it was fun to revisit the creature that started it all, I’m ready for different creatures. But I do love that everyone in the story were open minded and kind!
Ok so please take this review with a grain of salt. I was not a huge fan of this story at all but if the things I mention aren’t going to bother you then I still absolutely recommend giving it a shot. I do enjoy the fun, light-hearted fantasy stories that this author writes and wish I had loved this one more. I really enjoyed how it started out at least.
This is an MMM story and I have some pretty high expectations with those. I absolutely need the relationship to feel equal and unfortunately this story did not hit that for me. I think I would have been much happier if it was just an MM romance between Larkin and Dean. It felt very off with the addition of Mo and I’m not sure if I’m just not into the tentacle aspect or if it was the relationship itself.
Usually I can forgive crazy things happening in stories as it’s made up and I like to just go along for the ride. But this one just had too many things that were unbelievable, even with the characters themselves.
So again if none of those things are going to bother you please try it and I hope you absolutely love it! I do still look forward to reading more by this author in the future. I might just stay away from any MMM and tentacles!!!
A sweet & cute kinky monster novella. After completing the book, I became aware there was another one set before, definitely going back to read. There were quite a few heartfelt funny moments, such as when Dean claimed to be “vanilla” yet he’s the oldest of the throuple. Also, Larkin’s Father’s reaction was hilarious!!!
Dean, Larkin, and Mo’s relationship was rather eventful and a long time coming for Dean and Larkin. Their chemistry was smoking hot, setting fire to everything they touched, separate or together. And, the kinkiness included in this story!! I mean, TENTACLES and 2 separate anatomy for double the pleasure?!?!
My only concern, or complaint, was the claim of a few published articles, in six months time?? Not possible as it normally takes years of research before publication. Besides that, quick and humorous read!
This was just adorable! This little novella is set in the near future from the first, so it's pretty imperative that you read the first book to not be confused. Larkin and Dean have a lovely age gap forbidden love that they both have been denying. Though Larkin is technically a virgin, he's pretty darn kinky!!! A chance rescue introduces them to Mo, the cecaelia descendant from one of the first book's characters. His instincts drive them all together in this wonderfully fluffy tentacle adventure! My only complaint with this story is actually the same feedback that I had from the first, with the length of the story the side characters feel very unnecessary.
Tentacles and threesomes, oh my. This was a really sweet story and covered a lot of kinks. Not really a fan of the age gap genre, but thought this one was pretty good. Liked it a lot and would read again.
It was quite different from the first book. I loved that this time we actually had the story told from every main lead's pov, when I read a book that is heavily focused on romance I like getting all of the parties perspectives, and there's no sea adventure this time as most of the book happens in the aquaculture building.
I loved all the main leads, Larkin was really mature for his age and I liked that even though he sometimes got scared of how things may change for the worse if he acts he still bravely stepped forward. Mo was such a sweetheart and also quite mischievous and I liked how they were the glue that brought all of them together, they were quite sure of what they wanted and weren't shy about going after it. And Dean's struggle is understandable, there was not only an age gap with Larkin but he'd know him since he was a baby (absolutely nothing happened while Larkin was underage, and the initiative came from Larkin too) and there's quite the stigma surrounding great age gaps so I understand his fears.
I enjoyed seeing Mo and Larkin working together to change Dean's mind and it wasn't only about showing him that Larkin looked like and adult and not a child but also making him understand that he was mature enough to know what he wanted and this wasn't Larkin's childish infatuation. Really, age doesn't always equate maturity, I've personally met teenagers with a good head on their shoulders and making life decisions and sticking to them through the years and I've also met 40 yo grown adults who still behave in an immature way.
I wanted to see them have some babies though, I miss the cute scenes with them from the first book but I get that it took quite some time to get all of them together and on the same page.
POV: multiple Tropes: age gap, human/human/sea alien, m/m/m. Spice: medium high ( detailed scenes, alien peen, versatile roles, tentacle action) CW: there's a scene a the beginning where Mo is trapped in discarded nets with hooks and there's mention of blood and lose of tips of tentacles.
Delaney Rain brought another tentacle romance that was ooey gooey in its sweetness! This was cute, fluffy, and I found myself smiling at the dynamic between the MMCs pretty much nonstop!
Larkin is in love with best friend’s dad, who also happens to be business partners with his own father. Although Larkin has been in love with Dean since he knew he was gay, he hasn’t confessed his feelings for fear of risking everyone’s friendships.
Dean has suspected Larkin might have a crush on him, but Dean won’t go there with his best friend’s son who is half his age…but when Dean catches Larkin on his bed thoroughly enjoying himself, Dean can’t avoid the truth–or can he?
Dean and Larkin’s fishing trip is interrupted by hauling in tangled fishing lines with a blue, tentacled person in need of saving. Now, Dean and Larkin are entangled in healing the mersquid, Mo.
Mo was searching for their mate when they got tangled in fishing lines and thought they were going to die. Saved by their fated mates, two human men who are clearly in love with one another, Mo is determined to help their mates see that the three of them are perfect together.
Can these three find happiness while keeping Mo’s existence a secret?
The dynamic between Mo, Larkin and Dean was ridiculously cute. Mo, being an alien, doesn’t have the same hangups when it comes to social constructs surrounding dating and love–there are no barriers for them. So, for Mo, it’s very uncomplicated to act on their desires and it’s their mission to get Larkin and Dean to jump on board.
This was a cute, lighthearted read with some fun spice!
MOOD: lighthearted, funny TROPES: age gap, forbidden love, polyamorous FAV QUOTE: He wasn’t that needy, was he? But he also loved hanging out with Mo and Dean all day and night. Okay, yeah, that’s a lot. They didn’t need to be in each other’s pockets.
THE GOOD: This series is a great example of cozy (& kinky) monster romances and an instant-read for me. This relationship is between 2 humans (40 & 20) and an alien hyrid. The 40 year old mentions he's the most "vanilla" of the group even though he's the most experienced and that was a cute-funny moment. Overall, the characters and plot work really well and it's a cute, lighthearted read with some emotional moment.s Also, I can't remember if this was spelled out in the first book (A Sea Monster's Mate), but it's pronounced "Suh-kay-li-uh."
THE NEUTRAL: THE MEH: This is going to sound odd and didn't affect my rating but I had a moment that broke my suspension of disbelief. It happens in the epilogue (which is 6 months later) and mentions "He’d gotten a few articles published..." There is just no way that happened in that timeframe if they were research articles.
Ahhhh I loved this just as much as I thought I would! I'm so, so glad Delaney Rain is returning to the world of their very first book and giving us sequels with the kiddos all grown up!
Dean, our older male MC, is protective and sweet and strong. Larkin, our younger MC, has been in love with Dean since he first understood was crushes and attraction was. He's hoping desperately that the older man will see him as a potential love interest instead of the kid of his best friend. Mo, who is half human and half caecalia, is rescued by Dean and Larkin and their friends and is nursed back to health. And he's such a sweetie.
So many great moments - Larkin and Dean's friends, Larkin's Dad finding out, the three of them learning about each other and experiencing so many great firsts together. I love that Delaney can make her monsters so sweet and heartwarming, while still being a bit kinky and fun monsters.
I definitely recommend reading the first book, The Sea Monster's Mate, and then definitely check this author's backlist out! And I know there is a third book planned, I can't wait for it!
Delaney Rain's self imposed page limit strikes again! While there is nothing inherently wrong with this book - it's actually very sweet, cute and fun - there are a lot of moments that deserve more detail. To be clear, I've never not enjoyed a book by this author. In fact, I love that she writes consensual, light, queer romance in unconventional ways. It's a rare find and it's always a pleasant experience. That being said, my friend put it best when he said she writes as if she has a page limit she can't go over. There are several things in this book that are just too easy. The characters accept or move on too quickly. I understand the desire to not have heavy drama in a book, but if I had just told MY sea monster friend how much I love someone, then just walked in not even a day later to see them making out, I'd be pretty upset for more than just a few minutes. While it speeds up the flow of the book, the small hooks she throws in to add conflict to the story get resolved WAY too easily to make a difference, and the whole book suffers for it. The first Sea Monster's mate book was a delight with no such problems, but this one, while still a fun read, wasn't as good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Well... I guess I got exactly what I expected going into this? Only, there wasn’t quite enough smut to qualify as PWP, and yet the plot holes were still very much present. I’m all for suspending disbelief - I mean, I picked up this book fully aware it featured a mersquid getting freaky with not one but two human lovers. That part? No complaints. But are we really supposed to believe that everyone from their friend group to Larkin’s parents was just totally fine with him being in a committed threesome with his dad’s best friend and a tentacled alien? No side-eyes? No awkward conversations? Just instant acceptance? Okay then.
Also, can we please stop treating erotica like it has to include instalove and a surprise wedding in the epilogue? Erotica can just be about the hot stuff! In fact, I think I would've enjoyed this a lot more if it had focused just on the sex and let the relationship stuff evolve organically. I would've been okay with a tentative HFN. But instead, we got declarations of love, cohabitation, and a whole marriage arc in 119 pages. In conclusion: not enough smut to distract from the nonsense. Better luck next tentacle.
So why did I read the second in the series if I really didn't like the first book? Well, I was curious. I do like alot of the other books this author has written. And it's a short read at only 136 pages so I though why not?
I liked this one better. Perhaps it was because it was a poly relationship with two humans and a mersquid but it seemed to work a bit better. A young 20 something year old has the hots for his dad's best friend and has for quite some time. Said hottie silver fox is equally enamored of the young stud but tries to push him away because he doesn't want to upset his best friend. Enter the mersquid who wants them both and also wants to see them together.
There's mention of mpreg in this but it does not actually occur in the book and that's fine with me because book 1 seemed to really focus of the squidlet rearing rather than the relationship between the lovers. A much more enjoyable read and the seen where the dad discovers what is going on is quite funny.
This was very cute but I was expecting more. Poly relationship with age gap, pining, and tentacles should have been brilliant. Everything is nice but there's so much unfulfilled potential here. The humans have pined for each other for years and never managed to do anything about it because it seemed too forbidden, yet they immediately accept the idea of a poly relationship with a non-human. I wanted more length for UST and resolving the obstacles of the relationship.
And the sexual encounters were a bit lacking too, for two reasons: there was way too few tentacly threesomes, and the ones that were there happened after some time skips, and I had a hard time believing these guys really hadn't already tried out all of those things during the skips.
So much good here but I had hard time suspending my disbelief with these weirdest things, while I was completely embracing the lore from the first book.
I don’t read a lot of more than two in a relationship because two is a work in progress, adding more? I can’t even imagine so I rarely read these!
But this author has me invested in their stories and when I saw there was going to be a sequel to The Sea Monster's Mate, I knew I would read it!
I like Larkin, Dean, and Mo (Mo was totally my favorite)! I also really liked Corey and Raph.
And yes, the book was short and fast but that’s ok. This is not one of those serious books, it’s freaking MERSQUIDS. Suspend your beliefs (disbelief?)! Lol
An excellent addition to the series! Absolutely adored Mo, and Larkin was so cute. Wanted to just shake Dean but luckily he figured it out. The part with his dad was kind of hilarious and there was a LOT of steam in this story. A few places were weird and had to reread the sentence a few times and it still didn't really make sense.
Overall this was super sweet and interesting and I loved every second of this!!
adorable poly and healthy perspective side characters
What makes me happy about Delaney Rain’s books is the amount of supportive side characters, leading to low angst happy read. The main character suffered a trauma and it was dealt with in an honest and healthy way. Another main character went thru a possibly embarrassing situation and it was approached in a rather healthy way. Delaney’s books make me wish for a more open and positive world
Aquaculture Affair by Delaney was a light cheesy romantic monster/alien romance with aquaculture, a MMM polygamy and age gap themes. Not as erotic as the first, but has nightmare/comfort themes as well.
How much Did I like it? Ideas - World Building: 4 Stars Ideas - Plot: 3 Stars Character Depth: 3-4 Stars Character Interaction: Standard (small cast) Animal Characterisation: Limited Warnings: PTSD (nightmares). Explicit Sex Scenes. Swearing. Execution: 5 Stars
Not as good as the first one, but still nice. Poor Mo! I wish we got more time with his family (from the first book), but I understand why this had to be Mo's journey alone. The one thing that did bother me about this one was Dean continuing to call Larkin "kid" even after they got together. I also think there should have been a bit more conflict involved in Larkin's dad finding out about everything, but it is a short book. That being said it was still an enjoyable read.
A good story of how two guys whom one helped bring into the world become lovers through a gay monster who falls in love with both. All find love grow and overcome shame and embarrassment to become lovers and friends. Also the monitor who is half human also can mate and be with his wonderful human friends for life. A great romantic novel.
I didn’t find this as compelling as the first story, but I did like it. It’s been a while since I read the first novel and I didn’t remember everything referenced, but I still enjoyed it.
I've read several books by the author and overall enjoy them. They are cute , fun, and a fast read. This book was all of those things, but I felt it was missing something. Everything happened a bit to fast. Also the relationship felt lopsided, which I find M/m/m tends to do for me.
This is a paranormal mmm erotic romance, the second book in a series that should be read in order. This started out going in a direction I didn’t like but just get beyond the first chapter and it is a creative and humorous story. 💜💜💜💜
Such a fun, romantic, sweet sea creature romance. Delaney's Monsters are entertaining & fun to read, spicy, swoony snacks. I loved Mo, Larkin, and Dean, and how they came together. For such a short story, it sure felt fully developed & the HEA was great!
After the first book in the series, I have to say I expected significantly more weird sex, and there just wasn't hardly any sex at all. It was really cute and upbeat, though.
