“A Man Rising” is a story riddled with loss, heartache, and one man’s recount of how he rose above. Jaime does a great job walking the reader through the events of his life in a clear concise way that helps the reader understand the contributing factors that led to his addiction. He carefully navigates through the timeline of his life and doesn’t shy away from taking responsibility for his choices. It’s easy for someone who has lived in a world of addiction and has a long complicated history of making bad decisions to play the blame game and blame others for their failures and hang ups. A couple of key passages that stood out to me from the text was:

“Every day, we have an opportunity to choose our attitude for the day. We cannot change our past and we cannot change the fact that certain people will act towards us in negative ways. The one thing we can change is our attitude.”

“… you were not created to be depressed, unloved, angry, lonely, etc.”

And finally, something important to always remember,

Jaime states “Your smile, your compliment, your friendly gesture may be the thing that allows someone to see the light when they’re trapped in their own darkness.”

It’s not easy to be vulnerable to the world. Allowing those around you to have a magnifying glass into your psyche, and into your life story. Jamie does so gracefully and effortlessly. A Man Rising can easily be read within a few hours. I would highly recommend this to friends, family, and colleagues alike.

Great work by Jaime on telling his story. While I have never dealt with addiction, several of my friends have struggled with it. I will definitely be recommending this book to them as well!
