Sometimes magic throws a curveball… I thought I had everything figured out. I’d gone to the academy for witches and mastered my magic. I’d opened my own witchy occult store, just as I always wanted. And my family was as close as ever. Everything was going according to plan. Until the wolves showed up and dragged me back to their land. It was all a misunderstanding. They had the wrong girl, the wrong idea. I was just a witch. And then I shifted. But nothing is as it appears…and now my life is in danger.
*This is a stand-alone story with an HEA and no cliffhanger! You don't have to have read the rest of The Coven Saga!
I can understand why the author chose to use Spanish text throughout the book, but to me it was off-putting, especially in the first part of the book where it was used a lot. It just took me out of the story because it wasn’t just words, but entire sentences and the author didn’t always divulge really well and explain what was written down exactly and I didn’t want to constantly use google translate. It was a bit too much Spanish use for me; someone who has zero Spanish background.
Other than that… it was an overall nice read with a solid written romance and some awesome fantasy elements set in an interesting world. I liked the characters and for a standalone it’s a fun story-line to follow. I wasn’t familiar with this world yet, so I might dive back into it by reading other books in the future.
This is a stand-alone, but also part of a bigger series. Unfortunately I didn't know that when I started. Occasionally some stories or people would get mentioned like I was supposed to know about them. I was very confused when at the 80% mark we were suddenly introduced to new characters. It is a stand-alone, but I think knowing some of the characters mentioned probably would have helped. But if you're like me, and just jumping into the middle, it's fine like that too, just mildly confusing at times.
I knew the moment sleepy Clayton touched her hand that they weren't soulmates. I would think that by 28 yrs old someone would have shared with Inez what it felt like when the mate bond kicks in. I also knew the moment Clayton entered into the story he was bad. I couldn't believe how far Inez took things to try to force the bond. You never of anyone having to force the bond. She must not have any friends with soulmates. Once they finally start putting the pieces together it finally starts to make sense. Although I am mad Foster didn't tell Inez about the black crystals Clayton got like he said he would. That would have started their awareness that something wss wrong sooner. I do love how Inez catches Clay tons betrayal. Then I love how Foster figures out who he is to Inez. I loved Tegan's antics to catch Clayton. Although some of the shifters may need therapy afterwards. I love that Inez takes a special interest in Amelia. Someone needed to stand up for her! My favorite part is the ending. When Foster meets the family & realizes he's known part of the family for over 10 yrs. The fact that they include Gabriella in the wedding is beautiful.
This book was everything and more. Obviously I am a huge fan of Chandelle’s work and love everything she does. The coven is by far my favourite series but I love when we have some stand alone stories in between. I loved Inez story as the eclectic Latina with so much power versus Foster the soft wolf. They are a match made in heaven and I could not wait to see how they would be reunited. If you like witch and/or shifter books, this one is for you. And if you have not jumped on The Coven train yet, what are you waiting for ?
Once again Chandelle has made me break my rules and look ahead in the book to find an answer. I sign up again and again for the emotional torment every time I start reading one of her books.
The book was intriguing, captivating, frustrating, funny, and seggy. The mature content was handled beautifully.
It was great to get to know new characters as well as see some of our favorites make an appearance. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Inez, her sister, Foster, and the other shifters.
As always, I enjoyed reading another Chandelle creation. I'm excited for the next season to begin!!
OMG! This book gave me all the angst, anger, frustration, hilarity and love I could have needed. I absolutely loved these characters we were introduce to and their story! Chandelle did again and I can’t wait for more!
I’m a huge fan of Chandelle’s Coven series. Each book and character compliments the world she’s built perfectly, while also giving supportive characters a chance to shine on their own. She’s written this series in such a way that it could literally continue on for another 100+ books if she chose, which is very cool, even though I doubt she will.
That said, Inez and Foster’s story is just as great. Not nearly as life threatening as the main Coven characters, but Inez and Foster are not Cards, so that’s to be expected.
What wasn’t to be expected was SO MUCH Spanish written in. Easily 30% of this book is in Spanish! Inez is indeed a Hispanic character, but so is Paulina (from other Coven books). To date, Chandelle has included just a few words in Spanish here or there and it’s always easy to understand the context in which they’re said, even if you aren’t bilingual in the language.
I’ve no idea what possessed Chandelle to write this much Spanish into a book written in English, but it was a mistake. Most readers who pick up an English language book want to read in English. However, there are translation apps to help with that, if you’re contemplating reading this story in written form.
As a cautionary tale… if you are NOT fluent in Spanish, DO NOT BUY THE AUDIOBOOK. No offense to the narrator, Vanessa Moyen (who has narrated the entire Coven series to date), as she does do a phenomenal job with them all, including this one too… especially all the Spanish. But. That’s the problem. A listener doesn’t have the means to translate so much Spanish into English when it’s in audio format! This definitely detracts from focusing on and enjoying the story as well as with understanding the nuances of what’s being said. I spent good money on this book in audiobook format, expecting it to be another kick ass Coven series addition, only to have to give up on it a few chapters in and then switch to text version only. NOT COOL Chandelle!
Readers need to be WARNED that this book is approx. 30% Spanish, especially on the purchase page of the audiobook on Audible! It’s not noted and readers have no idea until after they’ve spent their money or wasted a credit. Really not cool.
What’s worse, this book is being billed as a “standalone/spin off” book from the main Coven series and is noted it’s okay to read it without having read the others. This is also NOT TRUE. Why? Because there are characters from previous books doing cameos in it, and none of it would make a lick of sense if you haven’t read the others first. You also wouldn’t be able to understand the war with Lilith and where in the timeline this story sits if you haven’t read the others first.
Overall, I loved the parts of the story I could understand but I’m pissed off at having wasted money on an audiobook that is literally worthless to me simply because I am not bilingual.
Chandelle - go ahead and write in any language you choose, but audio needs to be translated for the listener, 100%, into the language the listener purchases it in. This is just the kind thing to do for your fans. You COULD have had Vanessa narrate this one fully in English with a Hispanic accent for Inez and her family… just like she does for Paulina’s voice. A few words in Spanish included in the English version is okay, as long as the context is there. But please don’t write the rest of the Shifter Magic season like you did this one. It ruined the book, badly. Also, PLEASE fix the marketing of the audiobook to remove that it’s a standalone (because it really isn’t and you know it) AND include a buyer warning that it contains approx. 30% Spanish as is, unless you get Vanessa to correct narration.
Inez is a witch and the owner of a magic shop called Moonchild in Manhattan and also partners with SOMA to provide potions for them. Inez has two younger sisters Carmen 16 and Marta 12 who are also witch and they attended SOMA. One night after closing up her shop Inez and her sisters are heading home from work when Marta is taken by a demon right in front of Inez and Carmen and dragged into Central Park. Inez immediately go after her sister even though she’s not a warrior and not trained for it. She ends up getting badly hurt but she saves her sisters in the process and then turns around and have to get saved by a pack of wolves.
Foster is the beta to the pack of wolves who saved Inez from the demon and guard to King Kothari of Issale. Foster first meets Inez when he takes Billy who is one of the shifter boys to SOMA for his first day of school where Caroline Davenport sends him and Billy to her shop to get a potion to help Billy sleep and one to help him with his anxiety. Forster plans on going back to Inez shop the following day after he leaves Billy school so he can get whatever else that Billy will need for school. Before he gets a chance to do that Inez is injured in a battle with a demon while trying to save her sisters and ends up passing out so the wolves take her back to Issale.
Once Inez wakes up in Issale she meets King Kothari, his Shaman Elan, and Foster who proceeds to tell her how and why she’s there. See Inez is not just a regular witch according to the prophecy that the Coven gave them she is their Priestess of the Pack. But in order to prove it she must drink this special potion to see if she will shift. So after talking to she takes the potion but only so she can prove to them that they have the wrong witch so she can get back to her family but little does she knows that the Goddess has something else planned for her because she shifts into a black wolf and once again she blacks out. This time when she comes to she’s in Alan apothecary where he is taking care of her and waiting on her to wake so he can explain everything to her.
On Inez second day in Issale she finds her soulmate Clayton who is the alpha of the wolves but she doesn’t feel anything for him. In fact she has feelings for Foster and wishes that he was her soulmate instead. What is going to happen will Inez ever develop feelings for Clayton? How does Foster feel about Inez? Will she ever accept the fact that she is in fact the prophesied Priestess of the Pack? Read The Wolf Witch to find out what happens and you won’t be disappointed.
This is a stand-alone book in The Coven series. It takes place after The Death Witch but focuses more on the Shifters than the Coven.
Inez is a witch in NYC with two younger half sisters, who are part human and part arcana. I love that this book deals with adults vs. Teenagers (even though I LOVE every aspect of the coven).
Foster is the beta of the wolf shifters, and he is an absolute GEM! He is the type of man that makes your drool, and then his gentleman behavior makes you want to swoon.
Both of them haven't had the easiest of lives. Inez has lost both her mother and her father, and Foster lost his entire family at a young age.
I have a love-hate relationship with the Spanish in this book. I think it 100% gives Inez more depth and lets you see her for HER. Butttttt translating it is a huge pain. I took 3 years of Spanish, but I still struggled. I think Chandelle saying you can skip it and not miss anything is definitely not true. You 100000% need to know what Inez says in Spanish. It may not be huge big plot points, but it definitely adds extreme value to the book.
I love that we get to see the shifter side in more depth. We get to see in greater detail how they live and their dynamics. I love all of the foreshadowing in this book, and it is driving me crazy to not know what happens next. In both the Coven and the Shifter world.
While it was pretty clear of what issues and dangers lay ahead, I still thoroughly enjoyed how Chandelle weaved the story, so every question you may have asked yourself during the book ended up answered.
Foster and Inez are PERFECT for each other and are in my top favorite couples in the entire series. Definitely can not wait to HOPEFULLY see them in upcoming books.
1. I hate when a book is marketed as being a stand alone or a first of a series, but really there is a ton of back story from other books randomly thrown in so you don't fully understand what is happening/who random people who are introduced late in the book are. I hate when books are a 'standalone series' but part of a overall larger series and are not marketed as such. If you want to make this a spin off, market it as a spin off. Or if you want it to be a continuation, just market it as a continuation. You can say that you don't need to have read the prior books to read this one, but at least I'd know there were prior books and could brace myself to miss some context. 2. When the main couple is hooking up with other people after they know they are romantically interested in the other MC and not the person they're hooking up with. I get if there is a love triangle or whatever (still not my fav), but I hate it when they straight up get super sexual with people when they know they are not into them and are into someone else (even if it not full on P into V sessuals, still too much for me).
Also, "She moaned in Spanish and wrapped her legs around my hips to pull me closer." How exactly does one moan in Spanish and how is it distinguishable from moaning in any other language? So many interesting quotes from this one.
Overall thoughts: not for me.

I think Chandelle is one of the best Paranormal Magical Romance Adventure writers out there. She produces quality writing and exciting stories with engaging characters every single time, and The Wolf Witch was a very welcome and highly enjoyable addition to the Coven Series. This story takes place in the Issale region of the larger Coven Universe. As the plot unfolded, it was fun and entertaining to see favourite characters returning as part of the magic and the suspense, and we get more insights on how and where the Dragons and other Shifters live. I was very heartened for the check-in with Amelia to see how she was doing and observe how Chandelle wrote substantive ‘caretaking’ in this story to cover her fallout from the previous story.
As always, no one writes better Fated Mated scenes and storylines. Loved Inez and her Mate and how their journeys dovetail with the larger and longer Coven storylines and plots. Note to readers: the steamy scenes are more graphic than other books in the series.
Quick caution to readers to budget lots of time to read this installment because it is longish (so grateful for that), and once you start reading this story you won’t be able to put it down – could lead to an all-nighter bad book decision (Sorry, not sorry!) On my 2023 Favourite Reads List. Highly recommend.
I absolutely loved this book by Chandelle LaVaun. I was completely hooked by the end of the first page and didn’t want to put it down. Chandelle has the most amazing writing style and really brings her characters to life.
The female main character Inez is just amazing and I loved, loved, loved her! Inez is originally from Spain and speaks and thinks in Spanish throughout the story. I don’t speak Spanish and even though there is a lot of Spanish text used to show Inez’s thoughts the story still flows nicely and it fitted Inez’s character who is rightfully proud of her heritage. I also wanted to mention that you don’t miss any of the story where the Spanish text is used, it is very obvious what is happening still. I think it adds to the character.
Even though this is a stand alone story I really hope that we will see a lot more of Inez, Foster, Gabriela, Carmen, Marta and the Wolf shifters. They were all such great characters, Foster is a gorgeous person and incredibly caring and thoughtful.
I loved that we found out a bit more about the Dragon shifters especially Koth and Elan since the majority of the story was set in Issale. It was also great that there were appearances from many of the Coven members.
If you like awesome stories and amazing characters then you need to read this book!
I absolutely loved this book. Since the start of this year I’ve read every single one of her books in this Coven universe she has created (mostly in order too!) and just loved every one. I was a little nervous about this book because it was a bit of a departure with mostly new characters and a new setting (Issale) but within the first chapter I was already completely invested in the characters and totally hooked. Couldn’t put it down.
Also, I low key learned Spanish by reading this book. I love that she sprinkled Spanish here and there throughout the book. each time i came to a Spanish part I would first try to guess what it said, then I would highlight it and read the kindle translation and by the last third of the book I was guessing about 80% accurately ! I hope she does more books like this. It is an incredibly fun way to learn a language. Very non traditional and probably not super thorough, but I absolutely loved it.
I’m also super sad that I’m finally caught up to her writing. It was so fun being able to constantly start the next book the minute I finish the previous one, over and over and over. Such wonderful instant gratification. Then I finished this one and hit a brick wall… I gotta wait till august, dang it.
I haven't Read Anything Like This Before!👏🐺🐲🪄✨️ The Wolf Witch The Coven: Shifter Magic, Book 1 By: Chandelle LaVaun Audiobook 🎧 Narrated by: Vanessa Moyen Length: 13 hrs and 54 mins
This was a really enjoyable read that incorporated witches, shifters, and more in a way that I haven't come across before.😍
Inez, a Spanish witch who now lives in New York with her sisters and stepmum, gets attacked by demons on her way home from work. She wakes up in the hidden shifter lands to be told about a shocking prophecy!😱
Inez and her friend Foster discover something very fishy is going on!💥
As great as incorporating Spanish into the book would be for Spanish speakers, I just found it frustrating.🫤 It meant stopping and highlighting to translate, all the time, to discover what the main character was saying. Otherwise, it was well written and enjoyable.😍
The narrator did an amazing job with the Spanish and Inez accent. However, she barely changed her voice for other characters, even the males, when it was a chapter in their pov.😳
I will read more books by this author, but I hope the narrator choice is better.🙏🏼
What a rolllercoaster of a ride! This book was just wow…had me crying and screaming at the characters…at the same time! So many twists that were not expected and some I hoped was wrong! Chandelle LaVaun writes a beautiful story of Inez, a witch living in NewYork, who runs a store catering to humans and witches. It is here she meets Foster and it is here that her life changes dramatically. The best part of this story is that Inez is Spanish and the language is explored throughout. Easily translated in Kindle but not necessary as some speech can be easily guessed. However, it was great to explore a character from another country, who speaks another language not understood by others, and how they navigate their way around it.
I laughed, I cried, I gasped and had every other emotion in between. A fantastic introduction to the Shifter species of Issale.
If you like magic , dragons and shifters then this is a definite must to be read - as are all of The Coven books. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
“Hello reader! Before you start your adventure with Inez I’d like to point out that Inez is from Spain and speaks Spanish so you will see lines in Spanish sprinkled within the book. You do not NEED to translate these to understand the book, there’s nothing being said in Spanish that you’ll be missing. I promise.” She then goes on to explain how to translate with Kindle.
All well and good but I grew up in California with a lot of Spanish/Mexican speaking people. Other than an occasional common word spoken in Spanish everyone I knew spoke English with me. It’s just rude the way Inez uses Spanish words and phrases around her friend, Suzanne, whom she knows doesn’t understand what she is saying.
That being said, a lot of books will use foreign phrases here and there. I barely started this and there was so much Spanish being used that I got frustrated. What’s the point of including it if it means you’re not missing anything?
There were so many Spanish words and phrases in the first few pages I read that I just gave up.
I will start off by saying that I already knew I was going to love this book. I have yet to read a book by Chandelle LaVaun that I did not like. Though she has spotlighted shifters in her previous books, and we have had plenty of time to pick many loveable characters to adore, this is the first time she has written a book with a primary focus on shifters and their culture. The results were magical.
The fmc and mmc were thrown many curveballs throughout the book and handled themselves in true Chandelle fashion with humor quite a few wrong turns. In the end, and with the help of a favorite devious witch of mine, they came out with a total win and the ending couldn't be happier.
I can't wait for more shifter books. There were so many new characters and the hints from Elan at the end left me excited for who might be teaming up with these future shifters.
My suggestion, if this is the 1st time you have seen any of this authors books, then I would definitely recommend going back to Coven series season one and starting with Tegan.
Chandelle Is a LaVaun never fails to delight! The book will take you on a roller coaster.
Once I opened this book I immediately found myself drawn into the world and was unable to put it down. There’s action, deceit, and a whirlwind of drama that has you clinging to the edge of your seat asking wtf just happened more than once! I was iffy and unsure as the Spanish threw me for a loop but as I continued reading I found that it didn’t affect the story line overall. Inez is a breath of fresh air, she’s relatable she confident in her own skin and even when she’s thrown into new situations she tackles it head on. I can’t wait for the shifter series and to see how her story and the rest of shifter land plays out in the coven series.
As for why I only did 4 of 5 stars. I found most of the Coven series to be Pg-13 and safe to be read by younger audiences this one has spice and for a more mature age group
Ugh… I’m at a loss for words. It was just so cool to see a POC as a main character. And I thought it was absolutely beautiful how Chandelle wrote Inez and the use of Spanish since that was her first language. I’ve lived and worked in a predominately Spanish speaking area and it just how they are. And I just think it’s absolutely wonderful to see such an amazing world (and author) be so inclusive. And the story itself was freaking amazing. Loved the cameos soooo much. Loved getting to see a different side of Koth. I can’t wait for the shifter season now!! Also, Foster is the cinnamon roll I never knew I needed. I was not prepared to love him as much as I did. Inez was such a beautiful and relatable character. The grief ball…. the grace…. just all of her was freaking perfect.
I really enjoyed the multi povs. It was in the fmc pov and her true soulmates pov. I did find a few spots cringie to read, when it was first discovered that she didn’t have feelings for this older salt n pepper haired Alpha. I’ll be honest, I skipped just over the halfway point of the book, so I could see that there was some kind of happiness playing out. Then skipped a few chapters back. I was able to pick up easily where we were. This book talked a lot about many inane things in conversations, things that were just filler. Lots n lots of filler in this book. Which is why I rated it 3 stars. Most of it wasn’t needed to create a good story. I also feel like the fmc should have felt a bit more hesitant to the new life that was opened to her, when she was kidnapped/saved by the wolves. Otherwise good book! This is not a reverse harem.
Twists and turns you dont see coming! Ugh the love story was amazing, as was the supernatural part of the book. This book really flowed well together and you got the perfect amount of romance and supernatural.
This is technically the first book in this series and I believe is like a one-off. However, it is not the first book in the Coven universe. You could read this book on its own. However, because of all the world-building, you will enjoy this book 100X more if you have read the whole Coven universe before this. The main characters are new, but most of the side characters we have met before. We have also read quite a bit about the shifter world before so you pick up the smaller details better and don't get distracted from the main story with all of the world-building.
I love this world that Chandelle LaVaun has created. The first set of books got me hooked and I’ve tried to get every new book since then. I’m so excited to see the shifter world and I can’t wait to delve deeper into it.
My mother was Spanish and I understand some of the language. She thought it would be disrespectful to speak something other than English because my father wouldn’t understand. But I remember listening to my grandmother as a very small child and just knowing what she was saying. The moments when Inez and family spoke Spanish were wonderful for me.
As for the story itself, I really enjoyed it. I love this world so I was really happy with the story and the twists and turns. This is well written and there are only a couple of minor issues.
LOVED being back in The Coven universe & getting to meet new shifter characters & a whole different storyline! And better yet learning more about the shifters world in Issale. Glad to see some characters we already know from past books making appearances. Truly loved this book from beginning to end. The story keeps you enraptured & just makes you fall in love with the characters and the world the author has created. Loved Inez & Foster and really hope we will see more of them down the line in future books, as well as Inez’s little sisters Carmen & Marta. Really enjoyed the Spanish in the book, I’m a Spanish speaker and think Chandelle did a great job with it! But if you’re not Spanish speaking don’t fret, you’ll know what’s happening through context clues or if you’re on kindle you can translate it but overall it’s really well done. Highly recommend this standalone and the entire coven series!
This book takes place apart from the coven; but don't worry, several of our favorite coven characters make appearances.
I really liked that we are getting into the Shifter world. Apart from the dragons and Gigi, we had not seen much of the shifters. It was really great to see the Shifters and Issale featured.
I also really like that the "regular" witches (I know, right?) were featured. It was great to see what the daily life is like for a witch but without coven level magic and without coven level problems.
There is so much drama and intrigue in this book - you will not be able to put it down. This can be read as a stand alone, but will be much more enjoyed as part of the greater coven world.
Extraordinarily entertaining urban fantasy adventure series
This is an extraordinarily entertaining urban fantasy adventure series. Awesome cast of characters and a spectacular storyline. This story is based in the world where a number of other books by this author or based. It’s a world where the coven is a group of witches that are designated by numbers of tarot cards and are the protectors of witches and supernatural‘s in the human world. no spoilers but there are witches angels dragons shifters NCB Faye silly Fais in any number of other odd paranormal you can think of. This is the next chapter in the story of the Kevin and what’s going on in their battle with a Lilith. Readon and enjoy a new segment of the story.
SYNOPISIS (of Book 1): The FC is a witch who discovers she is the prophecies Priestess of the Shifters. There is a war brewing with Lillian (queen of the demons). The MC is a wolf shifter.
This was a DNF for me. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the book it just didn’t engage me and whilst the author correctly warns that there are sections in Spanish I had thought this would be along the lines of other books where it is is the odd line or two. It’s actually a lot of Spanish in the book and I got fed up with having to use kindle translate. I didn’t find either the FC or the MC engaging and the whole instalove/attraction doesn’t really do it for me either. What I read as otherwise well written just not for me.
Overall…. 4/5 stars. It was good and I’m glad I finished it. But there were several points in the book that I considered abandoning it. Parts of the book were just too slow for me. Facts right in front of them were ignored and I felt the tension between the main love interests was too stretched out. Some sections I ended up skimming through because they didn’t seem beneficial to the story. Eventually the love interests FINALLY truly discovered each, allowing the book to pick up momentum.
Overall, yes I would recommend the book. Just with the advice to be patient and see it through. I would consider this a slow burn.
🩷💜🩷💜 Chandelle has done it again and I can’t wait for the next book!!! I have read every book this author has written and I am always craving more… loved 🥰 the new characters, but overjoyed with the old crew back. I can go on, but do not want to spoil this book for anyone. It was so easy to translate the Spanish verses even for someone who doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. I would recommend this book to anyone…. I absolutely love 💗 Chandelle and any world she creates, this book will definitely not disappoint… so now I can’t wait for the next book.
The plot was amazing. Inez and Foster are hot together. The only complaint I have is there is too much Spanish in the book. I know Spanish mostly by osmosis, living in a city with many people who speak Spanish. Maybe I understood half of it, and I did feel like I was missing part of the characterization of Inez. Not all of it is explained in context, and I didn't want to leave the story to get a translation.
Another fabulous story in the Coven universe by Chandler LaVaugn. I really enjoyed seeing more of Amelia and learning more about Issale.
