Brief narrative and black-and-white oil paintings describe the affecting story of Jimmy Jack Blackburn, a young Appalachian child who sets out to find fuel when the family's firewood supply becomes dangerously low
I try to introduce a few older books from time to time, especially if they show a way of life in America long gone (for us at least). I'm not sure if this story was set in depression era america but it could easily be. My son was very interested in why they lived the way they lived and we talked about the Great Depression, poverty in Appalachian areas of which we are a part, etc. As a young boy himself he was especially taken by the young main character Jimmy Jack's determination to wield the tools and provide for his family.
