I found this book lying around in our home library a few weeks ago.
Michael Allaby defines Ecology as the study of living organisms, their relationships to one another and to the planet on which they live. He discusses many aspects of the science including plants, animals and even Human ecology. Man, like any other organism, is a part of this complex web of interactions and as such, he is a proper subject for ecological study. But his technological prowess has enabled him to have a more far-reaching influence than even he at first suspected, so that 'Human ecology' has acquired more philosophical and moral overtones.
The principle of ecology, of ''Earth house keeping'' are simple, and we are bound by them. We obtain nothing free of charge and in our closed world we can throw nothing away. With a growing awareness of man's place in the natural environment, we shall find it easier to appreciate and respect the air, water, land, space and other species on which we depend. We evolved into a natural ecosystem and with all our sophistication we depend on it for our survival. It is the only ecosystem, the only planet. Let us try to know more about it, love it and care for it.
