Pop culture died in 2001.

Cute if you like to watch The Nanny and Murphy Brown reruns or other 90's sitcoms with at the time current pop culture references with captions and Google each and every one. Not at all a necessary book to read but if it's October and a coffee table book will help you catch up to your Reading Challenge goal, then by all means, it's for you!

So much forgotten footage - a lot of it tragic, most of it scandalous. When I was a little kid, I used to sneak into my sister's room and pore over her copy of They Had Faces Then for hours. This book of striking photos has the same appeal, and the short blurbs accompanying each photo pack a punch. I don't know if this would appeal to any generation beyond Gen X, though. I've loved a good celebrity scandal since I was very young, but podcasts and TMZ have taken the place of the National Enquirer.

This was okay to skim to but the text was too hard to read on a computer and by the end of the book, I wasn't able to enjoy it anymore because the catch and kill news that came out about them these last few years became too much to ignore. Maybe just keeping it to celebrities and writing the text somewhere else would elevate it to a 2.5. At least I learned about Christina Onassis through this book.

Delightful trash! Of course, we all know about the stories he bought and buried about Republicans. Interesting to read the captions in that light.

Say what you like about the National Enquirer, but there is no denying they broke ground for trashy celebrity photography in America. The images here are fascinating-both as historical references and as seeing celebs as ordinary people trying to deal with extraordinary circumstances.

A book to be lost in and forget time, like the old paper. Fun walk down memory lane.
