Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis: An Evidence-Based Guide to Recovery

Rate this book
A research-based approach to treating the devastating neurological condition multiple sclerosis, based on a combination of drug treatment and lifestyle modifications

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a serious, progressively disabling condition for which current medical treatment is not particularly effective and has many side effects, however, this guide provides a genuine alternative. Through an exhaustive, evidence-based analysis of medical research, the study concludes that MS is a disease largely determined by lifestyle factors. Showing that people with MS who modify their diet, their exercise habits, and other aspects of their lifestyle can stabilize the illness and potentially recover, these recommendations will change the lives of thousands of people with MS and support their loved ones.

the most comprehensive MS book around. as an MS patient myself, i found this book very well researched. I read a dozen books on this topic from personal
stories to research and diets but this was the best hands down. I was disappointed with Wahls protocol and didn't understand the fuss about it. this book instead covers everything a newly diagnosed should know. it's a great blend between science and story, easy to read, easy to follow. also, the OMS diet is less restrictive in comparison to other i've seen around

A scientific book that I started AND finished in a little more than one week, that’s how fascinating I found this one to be!

Dr. Jelinek’s 7 step recovery program is deep in both scientific research and personal experience, making it very approachable. I appreciate that both “how” and “why” reasoning is provided for each recovery tool, thus demonstrating its importance and also how to incorporate the tool into the recovery path.

Prior to reading this book, I had started incorporating some tools into my MS recovery lifestyle. Dr. Jelinek helped me feel more empowered to implement the remaining tools. Furthermore, part of my recovery is now to help prevent my children from getting MS. As Jelinek states, “... it is a total change of life, for life.”

I really enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Jelinek bases the book on us his own personal experience with MS as well as providing us with an excellent medical resource on this debilitating auto immune disease that strikes so many people of all ages. The book focus in more on the aspect of prevention and slowing of the disease process. His relationship with his Mother, who also lived and died from MS was very touching. He gives us a very personal and up close view of that struggle, which motivated him to write this book. He was diagnosed shortly after she died, while completing his medical residency. I am glad he found the courage to include the mind/body aspect of patient care and healing. So much of modern medicine overlooks the patient. It's a controversial subject but it is very important for healing. He also goes into detail about evidenced based research and explains how research is formulated and published. He doesn't leave out the relationship between drug companies and profits, which is critical in our understanding of how treatment regimes are supported and funded. The idea diet plays a large role in preventing MS from progressing is interesting, although it does contradicts some of my own beliefs about the role of fat in our diet. The results of these studies speak for themselves. I would recommend this book for anyone who has MS.

This book is amazing and life changing! It offers hope to people with MS!

I read the earlier edition a year and a half ago, but I'm so glad I read this version published in 2016--more is being learned about MS all the time, and this book contains all the latest research on Multiple Sclerosis.

People with MS often think there are doomed and there is nothing they can do. Which is absolutely false. I have been living the diet part of OMS for 3 years, and the rest of the lifestyle for about 2 years, and most of the time, I am well. And the principles from this lifestyle have benefited my life in so many other ways. If you know someone with MS, this is a must read. As is the book "Recovering from Multiple Sclerosis: Real Life Stories of Hope and Inspiration" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

I also love that this book includes information for families on prevention.

This second edition is an entirely different book from the 2010 edition and is a MUST-READ for anyone dealing with MS. Jelinek is an Australian physician with MS and his program, based on a very thorough review of the medical literature and research on the subject, is light years ahead of anything here in North America. I am appalled when I continue to encounter physicians and MS professionals who have never heard of his program or the research upon which it is based. No big money here for the pharmaceutical companies perhaps? The OMS program has caught on like wildfire with PwMS from Australia/New Zealand and Britain but has yet to become known here except by determined researchers. Highly recommended.

George is not just a doctor, he is a doctor with MS. This makes the entire writing very personal and there`s a legit desire to help others with MS or at risk of it. My mum has MS, so I am at risk.
I picked it up because the title is a bold claim but it still had pretty good ratings. What I loved most is that he has written everything from a patient`s point of view and not from a doctor`s, authority`s or a pharma company`s point of view.

Now that I have read it, I am not fully convinced that it is as easy as George makes it look but one has nothing to lose from trying the diet, sunlight & exercise which is the centrepiece of this book. Of course he acknowledges aggressive forms of MS and that many would have to complement with medicine where things are often blurry. The topic on viruses and toxic drugs is very scary. But lifestyle remains his focus. I find it hard to believe the outcomes once one has the disease. But to prevent it, I mostly agree with him of lifestyle changes he proposes (as it is with many diseases).

I don`t like how he calls MS a western disease and has no data from any eastern countries. Several eastern countries don`t document things well when compared to the West. So I don`t think it is fair to assume that MS is a western disease. I don`t agree that it is a new disease since industrialization. As he argues it is the lifestyle change that brought about MS, I have to say that Aristocrats before industrialization had a similar lifestyle. Sure, there weren`t many.

He has an incredibly optimistic outlook for someone with MS and it is wonderful to read from such a point of view. He does provide data and statistics and is not afraid to disagree with norms, neurologists, pharma companies or authorities. I found it fantastic how he proposes MS recovery (10 year relapse free) similar to cancer recovery (5 year cancer free).

I am glad I read it now and not 10 years ago when I wasn`t so open minded even though I thought I clearly was. What this means is I did not cringe when I read about spirituality but saw it from a place if I would have a neurodegenerative disease like MS.

I’ve been living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for quite some time, and for years, I struggled to find lasting relief or stability. While medications helped manage some symptoms, the flare ups, fatigue, and neurological discomfort always returned sometimes worse than before. It left me feeling drained, uncertain, and emotionally overwhelmed.Out of a mix of hope and hesitation, I decided to try an herbal treatment program from NaturePath Herbal Clinic. To be honest, I was skeptical at first. But around the four-month mark, I started noticing real changes.
My energy levels improved. The tingling and numbness became less frequent
My mobility and mental clarity felt more stable and consistent
It wasn’t a quick fix, but the progress was steady and most importantly, lasting.
For the first time in years, I feel like I have control over my body and my life again. I can join conversations without struggling to find the right words, go for walks without the same fear of imbalance, and enjoy everyday activities with a renewed sense of hope. The physical, emotional, and mental impact has been truly life changing. If you’re considering natural options for managing MS, I genuinely encourage you to explore what NaturePath Herbal Clinic has to offer. It’s been a transformative experience for me, and I’m deeply grateful I gave it a chance.

I was living with MS for years before being officially diagnosed in 2021. I got annual MRIs, and I did not take any meds due to side effects. I had one flare up in 2021. My legs decided to a break and I was numb from the waist down. I decided to try MS-4 from Uine Health Centre. The numbness and Muscle spasms went away after a couple of weeks, but it took almost 3 months to walk properly without a cane. In June, it will be four years without incident, and I am extremely happy that I made the decision to not take any meds and went for the MS-4 formula even though my neurologist got upset and one told me to quit my job because I will be disabled. Well, I am not disabled, I still refuse to take those meds, and I am doing just fine. Believe in yourself and go with your instincts. Doctors don't know it all. I’m surprised a lot of people with MS haven’t heard of the MS-4 protocol, I got the treatment from uinehealthcentre. com I am absolutely confident that this protocol offers a viable solution. I hope you find it helpful.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years ago. For over two years, I relied on Levodopa and several other medications, but unfortunately, the symptoms kept getting worse. The tremors became more noticeable, and my balance and mobility started to decline quickly. Last year, out of desperation and hope, I decided to try an herbal treatment program from NaturePath Herbal Clinic. Honestly, I was skeptical at first, but within a few months of starting the treatment, I began to notice real changes. My movements became smoother, the tremors subsided, and I felt steadier on my feet. Incredibly, I also regained much of my energy and confidence. It’s been a life-changing experience I feel more like myself again, better than I’ve felt in years. If you or a loved one is struggling with Parkinson’s disease, I truly recommend looking into their natural approach. Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis: An Evidence-Based Guide to Recovery by George Jelinek is a thorough and hopeful resource for people living with MS. Drawing on scientific research and personal experience, Jelinek outlines a comprehensive seven-step program focused on lifestyle changes—diet, exercise, vitamin D, stress reduction, and mindfulness—alongside conventional medical treatment. The book’s strength lies in its balance of optimism and evidence, offering readers practical tools to take control of their health. While the writing can be dense and technical at times, and some lifestyle claims rely on emerging rather than definitive research, the overall message is empowering. It encourages readers to see recovery not as a miracle but as an achievable, ongoing process grounded in informed self-care and resilience.

I don’t have MS but was reading because I had/have guillain barre syndrome, which is too rare to have much known about it, and MS is the closest “match” to a better-understood condition.

This book certainly provides food for thought, and the section on the type of person more likely to get an autoimmune illness hit home for me. I’m not willing to give up dairy just yet, and meditation for neurological pain management has been mostly useless for me, but since reading this book I admit I’ve been working in my backyard in my underwear and jogging in tiny shorts to get more vitamin D!

I also know it’s been transformative for others with MS and I appreciate the transparency summary of evidence for how to reduce the risk of relapses.

The doctors don’t have answers. I have relapse remitting MS- I don’t take any medications for MS because I found they made me worse. When on the drug I became blind and paralyzed every 4 months like clockwork … I’d get better after a month or two and the cycle continued for years until I stopped taking their medications. And started on herbal tincture from Health Herbs Clinic I have not been paralyzed or blind since. I am a “walking miracle” because I barely suffer symptoms anymore. Natural Medicines, meditations and Ayurvedic therapies from Health Herbs Clinic has helped me completely reverse my MS,  I live a more productive life. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was 52 years old 4 years ago. The Bafiertam did very little to help me. The medical team did even less. My decline was rapid and devastating. It was muscle weakness at first, then my hands and tremors. Last year, a family friend told us about Natural Herbs Centre and their successful MS Ayurveda TREATMENT, we visited their website natural herbs centre. com and ordered their Multiple Sclerosis Ayurveda protocol, i am happy to report the treatment effectively treated and reversed my Multiple Sclerosis, most of my symptoms stopped, I’m able to walk and my writing is becoming great, sleep well and exercise regularly. I’m  active now, I can personally vouch for  these remedy but you would probably need to decide what works best for you🧡.

Consistent use of phrases like “studies show that..” but no actual reference to the studies themselves or even their names or years in addition to no footnotes. I need receipts for claims. Gets a star for having generalized good advice for overall healthy living and adaptations for things like exercise based on condition.

I strongly recommend it to people who are newly diagnosed or have already MS, or to anyone who has a close one with MS. It's evidence-based with a lot of charts, results from studies etc. Very motivating and encouraging.

This book is really good for people who know nothing about MS, diet and Yoga...
However totally not for me, having Crohns as well makes it more complicated, and already being a Yoga/Mindfulness teacher it was everything I’m trained for..
also a lot of science..
