Pamela Darby needs a man—preferably a Highland brute with more brawn than brains. Determined to save her sister from selling her virtue, the resourceful beauty requires a strapping specimen to pose as a duke's long-lost heir. Pamela plans to collect the generous reward, then send him on his way. Lucky for the brazen beauty, the seductive, silver-eyed highwayman who just held up their carriage could be her man . . .
Connor Kincaid has given up on his dream of restoring his clan's honor. And now this plucky Englishwoman is asking him to take part in a risky charade that could land them both on the gallows. Never a man to resist a challenge or the allure of a beautiful woman, Connor strikes the devil's bargain that could seal both their fates. The highwayman and the hellion journey to London as both enemies and allies—a woman who has everything to gain and a man who has nothing to lose . . . but his heart.

A good read with an absolutely delightful hero and a strong, likable heroine - has some small plot problems (3.5 stars)
I definitely enjoyed this book and would recommend it to historical romance-lovers, though I did have some problems with parts of the plot and mystery subplot which seemed especially contrived. However, the relationship between Pamela and Connor is great to read and Connor is an *absolutely delicious* hero that I don't see how any woman could not adore!
Summary: After their famous actress mother dies in a fire, Pamela Darby (23/24 - thanks Punya!) and her sister Sophie are left penniless and alone, for they are both illegitimate and the only they have left of their mother's is a letter she gave to her solicitor for safekeeping. When Pamela reads the letter, she begins to suspect that her mother's death was no accident and that someone was trying to keep secret the location of a missing wife and child ... The letter, addressed to Marianne Darby, was written many years ago by the Duchess of Warrick the night before she disappeared and reveals that the Duchess had found her husband in bed with another woman and planned to leave him, taking their son with her to Scotland.
The Duke of Warrick, old and dying, is anxious to find any trace of his only child, offering a reward to anyone who can uncover his heir's whereabouts. Pamela knows that this is the perfect opportunity, for if she is able to deliver the Duke's son, not only will she be able to collect the reward and assure her and Sophie's future, but she will also hopefully be able to expose her mother's murderer. Unfortunately, they learn that apparently the Duchess and her son died not long after arriving in Scotland's cold and harsh climate. When a highwayman stops the sisters' coach in the middle of a deserted road at night, Pamela has an idea that perhaps the duke's son can be ... resurrected.
Connor Kincaid (29) lives outside the law, making his way as he can without any real family or friends to speak of. Spurred by his hatred for the English, who stole his family and home from him, he disguises himself as a masked highwayman and robs Englishmen and women who pass through the area. Little does he know that assuming two unchaperoned and unescorted young Englishwomen will be easy prey might be the biggest mistake - or gift - of his life, for strong and independent Pamela appeals to him in a way that he cannot deny and Connor soon finds himself listening to her ridiculous, but tempting, idea.
After a few very entertaining debacles, the charade is agreed to and the adventure begins, but as Connor, Pamela, and Sophie finagle their way into the Duke's household and put their plan into action, many questions arise and not everything goes as expected ... Who is the murderer? Why does the Duke not seem like the horrible man they imagined, but rather a lonely and regretful one? How will Pamela manage to take the reward and leave to settle in for a life alone and how will Connor bear to let her go - or once he decides not to, finally convince her to stay? This book combines strong and well-matched lead characters, a great cast of supporting ones, many light and funny moments, good sexual tension, and an interesting (if somewhat unsurprising) mystery subplot for an enjoyable weekend read.
PRAISE: ~ I always love the unusual/not-belle-of-the-ball heroine and in Some Like It Wild Pamela is a woman who has often been overshadowed by her beautiful mother and sister who attract(ed) men like bees to honey. However, she finds in Connor a man who only has eyes for her ::sigh:: Pamela is strong, independent, intelligent, kind, and loyal; I was a little unsure of her at first because she's setting out to swindle the Duke, but her real reason is not a monetary one (though it is pretty farfetched, see "Complaints" below). ~ Connor is a to-die-for HERO! Rough around the edges, but tender, sweet and possessive with Pamela; intelligent, ultimately kind, independent, brave, loyal ... I could go on and on ;-) ~ Several laugh out loud moments ~ Great supporting characters in Brodie, Crispin, and the Duke - these last two are interesting, compelling, and realistic ~ Though it's not uncommon to read a historical romance with an illegitimate hero, the heroines usually aren't and I found this to be a nice change
COMPLAINTS: ~ The whole reason that Pamela sets out to bring the Duke's son back is to uncover her mother's murderer, but I had *huge* problems with that part of the mystery subplot: How would ___ know about the letter the Duchess had written to Marianne Darby (or its contents) and why would ___ decide only years later to try to cover up the information the letter revealed? ~ Connor's back story was not clear, though this may have been because I have yet to read Some Like It Wicked, which precedes Some Like It Wild. However, I was confused not only about what had happened to his family, which I'm assuming was explained in the first book, but also about why he left the clan and took to being a highwayman - it seems this happened more because Connor's character had to be a highwayman and meet Pamela that way than anything else. ~ I won't disclose the ending, but let's just say that certain plot twists were not surprising ... ~ I found Sophie to be very annoying and spoiled; there were moments where she was supportive and was a great addition to a scene, but most of the time she got on my nerves. If Medeiros does as she has in the past, Sophie and Crispin will be getting their own book next, but I will be hard-pressed to read it, let alone buy a copy.
This review was originally posted on Addicted To Romance Summary Pamela Darby needs a man to take on a role in a most deceptive masquerade. Pamela and her sister are in dire straits. After their mother was murdered in a fire, they were left destitute. If they don't find a way to get money soon, then her sister will be forced to sell her virtue away. Which Pamela refuses to let happen. On their way in a carriage, they get stopped by a highwayman. Through a series of events Pamela and the mysterious Connor Kincaid join forces to go on this charade for Connor to pose as a English Nobelman's son who disappeared when he was only a baby. Connor is a man who likes to takes risks, because he feels he has nothing to lose, so he takes part of the charade. But from the moment that they arrive, Connor and Pamela's chemistry builds to explosive proportions, but there is also that matter of a killer around the estate and if they aren't careful then their lives will be forfeit. The Hero Connor Kincaid lost everything when he was fifteen years old. Connor was raised by loving parents, his father left the comforts of the English Aristocracy to bring the Clan Kincaid together. But then the red coats murdered his parents, and Connor was the only one to take care of his sister who he sent to England for her own safety. For years he has struggled to survive with his clan. But Connor left them and has been on his own with some rugged ruffians. He has a price on his head and he knows that his time is numbered. Connor has had to do things to survive, that haunt him to this day and he regrets not being able to be a part of his sister's life. Connor was such a fun and sexy hero!! Quite amusing at times. I loved his humor and how he looked at life. The Heroine Pamela Darby has had to take on the honor of being the responsible one in the family. Their mother was reckless and selfish and demanding but they still loved and adored their mother. Pamela is desperate for funds, so when they find a letter about what happened to Duke's lost wife and heir, she discovered a way to survive and a way to protect her sister. Pamela understands the risks, but she also knows the reward is worth the risk to herself. Pamela was a heroine I was a bit nervous about at first. She isn't your typical historical heroine, but she definitely grew on me pretty quickly. She is bold, daring, and not afraid to go after what she wants. She is more serious minded at times, but it makes sense since she is very practical and logical at times. Plot and Story Line Some Like It Wild is the conclusion of this duo series and boy did I have fun with Connor's story. After the ending of the first book, Some Like It Wicked, I was on tender hooks wondering how Connor gets out of a certain problem. This story starts off with seeing acting all dangerous and sexy as a highwayman. Connor is a man that has had to turn to criminal activity to survive, but has never hurt anyone unless it was self defense. He despises the English with a passion, which is understandable considering how horrific this time was for the Scots. Even those moments of the retelling of his parents killings...I definitely understood his side of things and I would hate the English too. What I found most interesting to the plot was this Charade that Pamela creates and so creative was this aspect that I loved it. I even fell in love with the Duke even. He was quite adorable at times. Even the cousin who is next in line, I never really suspected of foul play. Out of all the side characters to not like it would be the Duke's sister. Something was off about her and I had a bad vibe about her. Its not until the end though that all is revealed about the true killer of Pamela's mother. What I liked though was the building romance between Connor and Pamela. These two are posing as an engaged couple, so they end up being alone quite a bit which leaves plenty of time for some sexy moments between the two. This romance was quite fun and quirky and I loved the various moments these two have together. The ending though---was simply perfection!! I couldn't have come up with a better end for Connor and the reunion between Connor and his sister was so sweet. I about teared up. Teresa Medeiros has written another fantastic romance to fully become engaged it!!! Highly recommend. The Cover Beautiful dress!! I just adore the green in this cover. I really like how flowy it looks and has a forestry feel to it. Overall View Some Like It Wild is a carefree, witty and fun romance that takes on a road of passion, secrets, mystery, danger and a love worth fighting for!! CREATIVE AND SEXY!!
It has been awhile since I have read a Teresa Medeiros book. I had some trepidation when I picked up Some Like It Wild because I am not a big fan of Scottish historical romances. It seems that every single Scottish historical romance has become very cookie cutter. Unfortunately so is the case with Teresa Medeiros who has fallen into this category with Some Like It Wild.
The year is 1814 and the place is the Scottish Highlands. The setting is so very important since this is a Scottish historical romance and must take place in the Scottish Highlands. Pamela Darby and her half-sister Sophie are desolate and poorer than church mice. Their mother was a theater actress and raised both Pamela and Sophie at the Crown Theatre off of Drury Lane in London. Six months ago a fire reduced the theater to rubble and their mother was killed. Sophie is quite the beauty but can’t act for anything in the world. Pamela is not so much a beauty because as in most of these historicals, a character like Pamela has the brains and not so much the looks. Because Sophie is a horrible actress, she and Pamela were thrown out onto the street to make their way into the world.
But Pamela is tenacious and has a plan. The Duke of Warrick, who is one of the most powerful and wealthiest nobleman in all of England wishes to find his son that has been missing for thirty years. If Pamela can find some dim-witted Scotsman to act the part of the long lost son she will receive the reward and end up buying some cottage on the coast and plant and garden or something of the sort. She is also on the quest to find her mother’s killer because she knows the fire was set by someone who wanted her mother dead.
As Pamela and Sophie are riding along in a carriage they can barley afford, they are attacked by a highway man who is Connor Kincaid the robber prince of the night, terror of the highways and scourge of the Highlands. Connor is all these things because he tells Pamela so after they come to an agreement after he attacks her carriage. Pamela stands up to this scourge and decides he would be perfect as Warrick’s long lost son. At first Connor thinks Pamela is crazy because she is British and as a Scotsman he can’t trust the British because they are enemies. Also he thinks her plan has so many holes that the duke would never fall for it. But Pamela has a letter the duchess of Warrick penned the night she left the duke because he was unfaithful to her. She took their son and made him believe she left for France, when she actually planned to seek asylum with her grandfather who was one a powerful laird in the Highlands. But the duchess and her son were killed. This letter was in Pamela’s mother’s possessions. Remember that fire? Well someone set it to kill her mother and destroy the letter so it would never be found. Pamela will use the letter as proof. The duke will certainly believe that Connor is his long lost son and everything will be a much brighter place in the lives of Pamela, Sophie and Connor.
So off these kids go to London to see the duke. The duke falls for the tale Pamela spins and welcomes Connor with open arms. Pamela expects her reward so she can buy some seeds for her garden and to be on her way, but Connor throws her plans for another loop. He tells the duke that Pamela is his fiancé. Now she will stick by his side. The next step is to find who killed Pamela’s mother and keep the lie going. But the fake relationship between Pamela and Connor has become very real because these two have found something special with one another that will not be denied! The scourge of the Highlands will plunder this devious yet perky young London miss.
What we have here is a handsome highway man who is really an overall nice guy who feels guilt for pretending to be some old man’s son, but needs the money. The woman he falls for has no shame in tricking the rich old man because she can’t stand to be penniless. You know these two will be perfect for each other and at the end everything will work out because this is a typical Avon wallpaper romance. (Does anyone remember the ending to The Proposition by Judith Ivory?)
Some Like It Wild is one of the most clichéd romances I have read in a long time. How many times have I read about a sexy Scot turned highway man to feed his clan? Or the spunky heroine who stands up to the sexy Scot turned highway man, whiplashes him with her tongue and then falls for him as he does for her? I would say too many times to count.
Another perfect cliched example is the old fall back scene where the heroine must talk to the hero in the middle of the night because she can’t sleep:
Virgin heroine a.k.a. Pamela: “Let me go into the hero's bedroom late at night in my skimpy nightgown because I just must talk to him at this late hour!”
Scottish hero a.k.a Connor: “Why is the heroine in my bedroom in a skimpy nightgown at this late hour? Oh well, I will pretend I am sleeping and when she gets close to my bed to see if I am awake, I will grab her and we will enjoy some foreplay, but no sex yet because it is only page 140 and not 210.
I somehow liked this more than book 1 but the ratings are the same for both. This one DEFINITELY had more plot and mystery and emotions. Things were explained and there was more going on that keep me believing that they're destined for each other. It was funny too! There's even a cat! And two romances in one because her cousin falls in love too T_T But I just don't understand why our hero was punished by our heroine for something he couldn't control? Made no sense. I was also iffy about the insta attraction and lust in the beginning of the book. But overall, enjoyable for a historical romance duology.
Love Teresa Medeiros writing. This enchanting book about a highwayman turned fake duke had all the right story elements. The fact that it started with a highwayman was a plus.
Pamela Darby needs to find a man, a man to impersonate a long lost ducal heir to help her uncover the murder of her mother. She finds just the man in Connor Kincaid when he tries to rob the carriage Pamela and her sister are traveling in. Pamela finds a little more than she bargained for with the witty whims of Connor as he takes on the role of heir.
I liked the bantering and silly antics between Pamela and Conner. They were a perfect match for one another in their wits and schemes. The story progressed at a good pace and kept the readers attention.
Superba carte!
Loved this book... Teresa Medeiros is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. This book had some surprising twists to it that I wasn't expecting and I thought it wrapped up the Kincaid Highlander series very nicely! I'm assuming there won't be any more additions to this series, although I'd love to read a book about Crispin and Sophie, so I'll keep my fingers crossed about that one! Can't wait to read some more books by this very talented and witty author! :)
This was my first Teresa Medeiros book and omg it was so good! I loved it so much! All of the characters were amazing the plot was fun, the dialogue was humorous and there was enough spice to give it a whole star. Conor is a highwayman who attempts to rob Pamela and her sister Sophie but then they end up kidnapping him until he turned it back on them and kidnaps them. Anyway, Pamela convinces Conor to go along with this crazy scheme to trick a Duke into thinking he is his long lost son. He agrees and it just gets even more crazy from there.
Having read and loved Yours Until Dawn, I glommed onto this book and plunged in. The illegitimate daughters of an actress are on their way to find a suitable impostor to play the role of long lost ducal heir. They hope to swindle the reward from the aging duke and discover who murdered their mother over a letter she received that holds a clue to the heir's whereabouts. While the world is searching for the lost heir in France, this letter, sent to their mother from her dear friend the duchess, reveals her flight to Scotland with the ducal offshoot some decades ago.
On the way north, they're accosted by a highwayman, notorious in the area for having once escaped hanging. He still bears the rope burn scar around his neck to prove it, too. He's a big, brawny, handsome rascal and she's a spit-fire. Cue the pyrotechnics, please.
A fun read, enjoyable because TM writes a lively story consistently as far as I can tell. But it doesn't compare to Yours Before Dawn, which grabbed me by the collar and wouldn't let me go for the duration. I started this, got bored and left it, and only returned to it days later because I had little better to do. The second half picked up, with various potential villains and plots afoot. And H/h got busy because they couldn't resist the temptation. (It's explicit, btw.)
I preferred The Proposition by Judith Ivory in this category of lost heir rediscovered plots.
I will admit this was a slow start but once they get to London it had me hooked. I love historical romances where the girl tries to "run" from the guy but he "catches" her.
Pamela Darby can’t remember a time when she wasn’t the practical, responsible person that her family always turned to in times of crisis. As the moderately attractive firstborn child of the beautiful and adored London actress, Marianne Darby, clever and intelligent Pamela has always looked after both her pampered mother and her gorgeous younger sister, Sophie. When Marianne dies in a theater fire, leaving them penniless and young Sophie at the mercy of a married nobleman who wants to make her his mistress, Pamela does what she has always done best. She takes charge and forms a plan that will not only secure enough money to keep Sophie safe but will also allow Pamela to unravel the mystery surrounding the fire that killed their mother, a fire that Pamela is certain was intentionally set with their mother as the targeted victim. All she needs to set the plan in motion is a man, specifically a Scotsman, around 30 years of age, good looking, with enough larceny in his soul to agree to impersonate the long-lost heir to the ailing Duke of Warrick but sufficient honor to not double-cross them by absconding with the reward. When their carriage is waylaid by a brash, handsome highwayman on a dark, lonely Scotland road, Pamela is certain that their prayers have been answered…until the scoundrel steals a kiss…and Pamela finds herself liking it entirely too much.
Connor Kincaid hates the English and with good reason. As a young man he watched the Redcoats kill his parents, burn his clan’s homes and steal their land. For the past five years he has stolen back from the English as a notorious highwayman with a price on his head. When he receives word that two English ladies draped in jewels and furs are traveling unescorted through the area, he anticipates an easy, and lucrative, night’s work. What he gets instead is feisty, stubborn and outspoken Pamela Darby – a woman draped in paste gems, a squirrel stole and much too appealing for his peace of mind – with a crazy scheme that would drop him right into the center of his enemy’s territory and, if discovered, into a cell at Newgate…or worse… yet, amazingly, he finds himself actually contemplating going along with her plan.
Medeiros is a gifted wordsmith who has crafted an engaging story that is, by turns, humorous, suspenseful, sensual, poignant and wickedly wild. One of the things I most enjoy about her writing is her use of descriptive imagery, as shown in the following passage that takes us into Pamela’s thoughts upon hearing Connor’s voice for the first time. “His mocking burr was as rough as burlap, yet soft as velvet. It was like having both the rose and the thorn dragged across her quivering flesh at the same time.” I don’t know about you, but that passage certainly had my flesh quivering!
In this sequel to last summer’s Some Like it Wicked, Medeiros has paired a confident, practical woman used to being in charge with a passionate, nothing-to-lose highlander who is not accustomed to having his leadership questioned. Sparks are sure to fly and fly they do, especially when the pair arrives at the Duke of Warrick’s London home and Connor takes charge, quickly turning the tables on Pamela and sending her well-planned future into chaos with one surprise after another. Throw in the mysteries of the possible murder of Pamela’s mother, the long-ago disappearance of the duke’s duchess and son, the various people, both in England and Scotland, who would be happy to hasten Connor to his eternal rest and the ever deepening relationship between Connor and Pamela, all sewn together by Ms. Medeiros’s talented writing skill, and you have another fast-paced, supremely satisfying historical romance that is not to be missed.
4 and 1/2 Stars - Captivating Regency with a Highland Twist
Set in 1814, it begins in the Highlands and later moves to the outskirts of London. It tells the story of orphans Pamela Darby and her half sister Sophie. Their mother, a famous actress, was killed in a suspicious fire that Pamela thinks is tied into her mother's friendship with the Duchess of Warrick.
When the Duchess, now dead, ran away from her unfaithful husband, she took her baby son and started a new life in Scotland while laying a trail to France. Only Pamela knows the duchess went to Scotland since only she has the note the duchess left Pamela's mother.
Pamela and her sister need money to live and to save Sophie from a lecherous viscount. They hope to collect the reward for finding the duke's lost heir so they rent a carriage and head for Scotland. When Pamela's search suggests the baby boy died with the duchess, she decides to find a Highlander who can pretend to be the duke's son.
Who should happen along but a highwayman with gray eyes and a god-like body? Connor Kincaid gave up on his dream to restore his clan and has been living the life of a highwayman robbing the dreaded English who murdered his father and mother. He has little to lose and English money and a title to gain, so when Pamela proposes he pretend to be the duke's son, he agrees. When he gets to London, the old duke easily accepts him as his son saying he has his mother's eyes. Conner is happy to play along. He decides that to keep Pamela by his side he will claim she is his fiancé. Pamela doesn't like it but she can say nothing.
This was a fast moving, well-written tale. The first part of the story that took place in the Highlands was fun and I liked the back-story of Conner's early life. Medeiros did a great job of showing us why he was truly a hero worth loving. The rest of the story (except the ending that brings us back to the Highlands) takes place in the duke's home at Warrick. The developing relationships and chemistry between Pamela and Conner were well done. There are some great secondary characters, including the duke and his nephew. Medeiros does a bit of "head hopping" in some scenes but it did not detract from the story.

This book 2 in Ms. Medeiros Kincaid Highlander books, coming after Some Like it Wicked. This book is about the brother of the heroine from Some Like it Wicked. I enjoyed this book very much. It was a fast and fun read. However, I felt like I had read the end before (now, I know it’s not possible since it’s the first time I read this book, but, near the end when certain things are revealed at the party/dance that the Duke holds for the hero felt like déjà vu to me – probably very similar to another historical romance or regency that I have read before). The heroine, Pamela Darby, who is a bastard daughter of an actress, is looking for a man to pretend to be a duke’s long-lost heir so she can claim the reward. Luckily for her the hero, Connor Kincaid (the brother of Catriona from Some Like it Wicked), has just stopped Pamela and her sister (Sophie) to robe their carriage. Pamela convinces Connor to be the duke’s heir- very convincingly. Pamela sticks around, not only because Connor told the duke that she is his fiancée, but because she is determined to figure out who lit the fire that caused her mother’s death. Was it the duke’s sister Lady Astrid? The duke’s nephew Crispin? Colonel Munroe? The end result is not hard to guess- pretty predictable. The hero and heroine, while they have steamy love scenes, don’t seem to have much chemistry in the book. They were working together and then they were sleeping together with not much going on in-between. Ms. Medeiros is a wonderful author, but I do hope she goes back to how I know she can write, these last two books have not been her best. It sounds like Ms. Medeiros might be planning her next book on Sophie and Crispin (based on what is at the end of the book), but neither is a Kincaid, so who knows.
