Reger's friend Nathan Carrico designed Emily in 1991 for a skateboard company in Santa Cruz, where Cosmic Debris was born. In his Santa Cruz garage (and later an artist warehouse in San Francisco) Reger created the designs, and with Matt Reed brought them into the fashion world by creating t-shirt designs that captured the essence of this mysterious young girl with 4 black cats. Since then, Cosmic Debris has grown into a multi-million dollar firm with dozens of employees.

Cosmic Debris has most recently moved its operations to Berkeley, California, and plans to open an Emily retail store there soon. With the momentum of mainstream success, several comics about Emily have also been made. Key creative people over the years (designers, graphic artists, illustrators), who have worked with Reger's Cosmic Debris design house are Buzz Parker, Brian Brooks, Grace Fontaine, Liz Baca, Noel Tolentino, Fawn Gehweiler, Jessica Gruner, Adele Pedersen and Nicomi "Nix" Turner. Rob Reger remains the key creative force behind the brand, and Buzz Parker is the key illustrator for the comic books and website.

I know it's weird and the book seems to be a simple just-for-fun-thing, but it's much more to me.

I can't put it into good words, sadly I'm no writer, but to me this Book of Strange is like a surrealistic painting. Something that seems odd and kinda aloof at first glance, but starts to whisper mesmerizing secrets to you if you look long and close enough.

Maybe this was just my kinky imagination, but that's good enough for me.
I would recommend it to daydreamers, people, who like to stumble into new places and anyone who has ever seen a face in an ingrain wallpaper.

I snaggled this book from my sister's give-away pile. I thought it was interesting to look at, with all the "hidden" pictures that you find only when the book is tilted at a particular angle against the light. But it's not something I personally want to keep or look at over and over.

Companion book to the novel Emily the Strange. Gorgeous art that takes you behind the scenes in Emily's life. Beautiful art with little text.

More nostalgic reads for spooky season. This book is a guide to all things Emily, a short read about her life and the way she experiences it.

Again, it's way more art than words.

Still plenty easy to read by a kid, but maybe not so easy to understand.

It's very surrealistic in the way some of the more expansive images have been laid out.

I still love the glossy messages, and hidden images all around, that was my favorite part to look for.

On it's own, it doesn't really do much, but viewing these little graphic novels [there's like 3-4 of them think] AFTER having read the actual book gives readers a much better sense of who Emily is as a person and how she functions [and the little things that crawl through her mind].

Perfection. Just plain perfection. This book was very quick to read and it was amazing because if you turn certain pages in the light, you can see hidden things like dragons, spiderwebs, etc. The few words in this book just flowed beautifully with the pictures. Well done!

Really interesting art, I personally prefer graphic novels with a bit more text and story.

It's the last Friday before Halloween and I thought now would be the right time to read and review Emily's Secret Book of Strange.
A little background about Emily. She's an advertising mascot designed in the early 90s. Since her inception, Emily and her kitties have graced skateboards, purses, guitars, stationary- you name it. There's even boutiques devoted to her in Taiwan, Japan, and in 2017, a store will open in her birthplace of San Francisco. In 2001, Emily even made the jump to comics and graphic novels.
I had seen a couple of Emily the Strange books in the Young Adult section at my local library. But I just wouldn't make time to check it out. Then one day at a discount book sale, I found a copy of one of her books for literal pennies on the dollar. "Huh,' I thought, 'This would make a great Halloween read' and I snagged it up.
So, was it a great read?
The neat thing about about Emily's Secret Book of Strange is that some of it is printed in this kind of invisible ink. If you hold the book up to the light in a certain way, secret messages and other spooky images appear. That's actually pretty neat. There's even this secret decoder activity throughout the book that requires you to find a secret rune in order to find even more hidden messages from Emily.
Stylistically, this book is beautiful. But the book itself borderlines on the disturbing. Emily hates people. Her only friends are her cats. In order to not feel so lonely she creates these hybrid creatures called Zonsters. So far, I'm on board with everything though I'm a bit spooked as well.
Because of her creation of new beings, she also shes herself as God.
Huh? say what? Yeah, I'm sure there's some Doctor Frankenstein mixed into this but if I am trying to be objective for parents, I have to point this personality trait out because some adults may find this objectionable for their kids. Going on the Emily the Strange website, it's pointed out that Emily isn't for kids. But this book is aimed at those 10 and up. Honestly, some of the images and cryptic messages might be too scary for youngsters. So, I would have to say that the suggested reading age actually be 12 and up.
A very artistic book that is at times visually beautiful as it's advertising at it's very best. But it contains images and ideas that parents and guardians may not feel are appropriate for their child. Personally, this won't be a permanent fixture of my collection but that's my opinion.

This is kind of a strange (no pun intended) book that's fun and interesting. It's a good, though short and easy, read, with exciting art for those who don't get so easily excitied.

I really loved how the symbols along with other text were hidden on the pages. This one was really well done conceptually.

I really liked it until the "you are your own god" line which I didn't catch the first time through.
