This newly revised edition provides insights from one of the leading Lutheran theologians of the twentieth century. The essays and reflections gathered in this volume provoke readers to think about and discuss topics such as risk and faith, nature and grace, the Word of God and genuine theology, real education, the beauty and meaning of language, necessary personal choices, aging, and social issues. Study questions are provided to encourage group discussion.
Joseph Sittler Jr. (Hamma Divinity School, Springfield, Ohio; Wittenberg College) was a Lutheran minister and professor of theology at Maywood Seminary, which merged into the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He was also active in the Christian ecumenical movement, working with World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches.
I found Sittler's treatment of a range of issues in faith and spirituality clear, concise, provocative, and sufficiently basic to use in a study with lay people. Those of my congregation who took part in the study were not as enthusiastic -- they saw it as "intellectual."
