Burgundy Genuine Leather. Words of Christ in red. No markings or highlighting in the text. One brief quote written inside first page. Essentially brand new and rarely used. Great price for a genuine leather edition that is out of print.
For the last several years, I have chosen a different KJV reference Bible to read for my personal devotions. Of course, I read the Scripture, but I also read all the accompanying notes. I have found it an enjoyable and profitable way to change up my pattern of daily Bible reading. For 2024, I read the Rice Reference Bible. My comments have to do with Rice's work, not the Scripture itself. There is no error/mistake/shortcoming in God's Word.
Thoughts, perhaps a bit disconnected, as is meet for a work of disconnected thoughts... -feels less like a labor of love for a lifetime (the Strand Study Bible, for example) and more like something thrown together to take advantage of a popular preacher's constituency -though hard to find now, the physical book itself is rather nicely done in a (now dated) soft hardback style; the font/print is very good; the editing is precise and on point for I do not recall any print/grammar mistakes -in some sections, you can see that Rice put some time into the notes; in other sections, either he ran out of time toward the end of his life, or he didn't have a bunch of already studied material to include for he goes silent for pages at a time -I've read enough of Rice's work (about a half dozen books) to know that Rice could be a genuine scholar when he wanted to be, ergo, his book about the Bible, which is especially well researched and written; having said that, the Rice Reference Bible is a missed opportunity, the notes, while clear and consistent, are only occasionally compelling, just as occasionally, he is flat out wrong in his comments, in between, it is just vanilla -one of the precious things about this reference Bible is that Rice's passion for souls bleeds through loud and clear; it marked his ministry and his writing and his preaching deeply, it marks his notes just as deeply and it warms and challenges the heart to see
Overall? I'm glad I read it. It was profitable. But I have no plans to read it again or to consult it on an ongoing basis.
Kindly said, Good Reads is unethical! I was searching the internet for some of Dr. John R. Rice's books. I saw that Good Reads advertises they have the "John R. Rice Reference Bible." I clicked on the "I Want To Read" button, but then Good Reads required me to create a new account and login in, so I did that. Then after going through that hassle and wasting my time, I learn that Good Reads doesn't even have the book on their website. Why do they waste people's time and falsely advertise a book that they don't even have?
Having said that, I bought three John R. Reference Bibles decades ago when I attended Bible college. They are awesome! I wish they were still available. Evangelist John R. Rice (1895-1980) was a brilliant Bible scholar, who preached 2,200 revival meetings across America over 20 years, with his younger companion Pastor Jack Hyles (1926-2001). I thank God for these dearly beloved faithful servants of God. America owes a debt of gratitude to these faithful soulwinning men who influenced millions of people for Jesus Christ. They were the Billy Sunday's of their generation.
I am thankful for Good Reads, but they need to improve their website so that people won't waste their time creating an account and logging in to read books which they advertise, but then you find out that they don't actually have the book available. I LOVE BOOKS! Thank you for reading.
