The Keeper's Shadow

Rate this book
Two years have passed since Roan fled the destruction of his village. He has survived the polluted wilds of the Devastation, escaped the lethal mind traps of the Dreamfield, and infiltrated the heart of the sinister City. Through it all, Roan has struggled to hold fast to Longlight’s legacy of peace. But now, an unimaginable evil looms and violence seems unavoidable. Darius, the Keeper of the City, is enraged by the escape of Roan’s sister Stowe. Despite the loss of his sacrificial prodigy, Darius’s malevolent reign continues to push the entire realm to the brink of destruction. As Roan and his trusted friend Lumpy struggle to unite disparate peoples in a war against the City, it becomes clear that any chance of victory must include Stowe. But is her battered psyche damaged beyond all hope? The Keeper’s Shadow completes the engrossing saga of The Longlight Legacy, a powerful chronicle of how untold destruction can result from accommodating evil and the violence it spawns.

This first book I loved, the second was ''eh'', and I was hoping for improvement in this one - however, I didn't really get that. It just felt pretty rushed (especially at the end) and even a little sloppy. The writing quality just doesn't match up to the first in my opinion. Nothing really invoked much feeling for me, either negatively or positively.

I did enjoy some parts, though. Such as I enjoyed Stowe's character more in this one, or the whole ordeal with the Friend.

(Note: Since this is a prophecy story, I already have a negative bias towards it, so that won't help my feelings for it. I did not feel this is one that did it well enough for me to enjoy. However, if you like prophecies you might enjoy it a little more than I.)

The wrap up was too sudden after all the prelude that filled up the first two books and most of this one. A little disappointing.

The Longlight legacy was very much appreciated. I was captivated at the struggles between good and evil.

It was interesting that even though the characters didn't want to do certain acts and behave in a certain way; they did so to save others. It was rarely easy and sorry to say one of my favorite characters died, sweet Willum. All the characters knew what was at stake and many forsaw their own demise.

I would like to know how the apocolyptic world turned out since the ruling few were from all the different sorts of people. Will the devastation be restored? Will there be balance in the world?

I was relieved to see that Roan could finally forgive his grandfather, who unknowingly set in motion the demise of the world as they once knew it. He could never have known what far reaching effects certain acts would have. Unfortunately, since he could see into the future after the dirt eating started, that he knew how bad it soon would get.

Overall I enjoyed the Longlight Legacy, but this third book once only average due to the fact that there were only a few real exciting parts. I kept expecting there to be more and more explanation about all the storylines that were introduced, but there were never any detailed explanations about anything. Most of the stories were just half-resolved for me. The Dirt Eaters were barely involved, we never got to know really anything real about the Wazya, and all the talk about the prophecies and the Friend didn't make very much sense. The story of Roan and Stowe was very powerful, but that's about it for me. The ended was not good for me. Roan takes off instead of finally comforting his long, lost sister and helping out. I absolutely loved Willum and Lumpy. Lumpy was a great character, but we barely get to know what really happens to everyone, just that the dirt was destroyed and Darius was killed. A great story idea, but it didn't reach its potential in my opinion.

An exciting and powerful conclusion to an outstanding series. Roan comes of age as he struggles to learn to be a leader, and Lumpy really comes into his own, displaying a keen intelligence and insight as well as compassion and empathy. While religious and mystical themes play a role in all the books, they really come to the fore in The Keeper's Shadow as it probes deeply into questions of faith and belief.

I finally got to finish the third book of the Longlight Legacy trilogy. Although I was disappointed in the amount of losses in this book, I understand that it was necessary to the story. although I didn't find it quite as engaging as the first two books, it was still a really good read. Everything was wrapped up at the end with just enough questions and openings to keep you wondering what would happen in the future, without leaving you wondering about the past. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Science Fantasy.
