Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

ما يميز قصص وروايات تولستوي ان ابطالها دائما طيبين.
ويركز على شخصياتهم بإبراز الطيبة والاحسان والكرم والتعاطف في شخصياتهم ليجبرك على التعاطف معهم. وبالعكس على الشخصيات الشريرة اللاإنسانية يجعلك تنفر منها.
القصة تدعو الى التحمل والجلد فالظلم ظلمات والله سينصرهم فقط لا تحارب الشر بالشر .
ويركز على شخصياتهم بإبراز الطيبة والاحسان والكرم والتعاطف في شخصياتهم ليجبرك على التعاطف معهم. وبالعكس على الشخصيات الشريرة اللاإنسانية يجعلك تنفر منها.

“…We all know that it is wrong to kill a good man, but even God would take that way the life of such a dog as he is. It is our duty, if we have any love for mankind, to shoot a dog that is mad. It is a sin to let him live. If, therefore, w e are to suffer at all, let it be in the interests of the people…”

An uprising among the serfs is about to break out when the lords of the land keep on turning their backs on their human rights. One serf has at last spoken up due to the arrant cruelties he has experienced suggests that Michael Simeonovitch, the superintendent, be killed. But Peter Michayeff, a pacifist, stopped them , for commiting such a crime leads to condemnation. Paranoid he may be, Michael sends an elder man to spy on the secret rancorous meeting of the serfs. When the elder man reports to the superintendent, Michael realizes , with the insistent platitude of his wife, that he is prone to perdition. To change the life he leads, he goes to the village to reconcile. Unfortunately, he falls off his horse and dies. Upon hearing the horrible accident and the cruelties befall the serfs , the noblemen freed their serfs.

The story deals with cruelties among the slaves with their suppressed feelings they can no longer stand, a factor which can trigger revolutionary act; the moral question when it is an evil to kill a person; or when the humility or turning –the-other-cheek biblical teaching is a perpetually necessary mean to put an end to an animalistic slavery; and all in all, how God plays a role in such a realistic scene of human life.

لم أتوقع التأثر بهذه القصة القصيرة لهذه الدرجة. كيف يتغير الطاغية بسبب بسيط كهذا؟ شمعة صغيرة يشعلها فلاح ويتحدث وهو يعمل في الحقل فعلت فعلها اكثر من صريخ بقية الفلاحين الذين يهددون بقتل الطاغية. ذكرتني بالذبابة التي دخلت في رأس النمرود وبقت تطن وتطن الى ان جن جنونه وبدأ بضرب رأسه على كل شيء ليسكتها ومات بهذا السبب.
هل يا ترى قد اقتبس الكاتب هذه القصة من تلك القصة؟

تدور أحداث القصة في زمن الإقطاع الروسي حيث يعيش الفلاحون ( الأقنان ) تحت ظل استبداد الناظرين أكثر من الاسياد .

وفي هذه القصة يعين أحد الاسياد ( ميخائيل سيميونوفيتش ) وهو أخد الفلاحين مشرف على الفلاحين . وبدل أن يرعى حقوق الفلاحين الضعفاء ينقلب عليهم كأسد ضاري والويل لمن يخالف أوامره .
لم يعجب الفلاحون هذه الحاله التى صاروا اليها وقرروا الانتقام من ميخائيل وقتله الا أن أحد الفلاحين لم يعجبه قرارهم وهو ( بيتر ميخاييف ) الذي رفض أن يواجه الشر بالشر .

رغم قصر القصة الا انها تحمل معاني كثيرة تمثل القيمة الحقيقية في العطاء حتى ولو كانت شمعة.و أن الظلم لا يدوم وهو يذكرني بقوله تعالى :( فمن يعمل مثقال ذرة خيراً يره و من يعمل مثقال ذرة شراً يره) سورة الزلزلة الاية ٧

تولستوي هنا لا يكتفي بسرد مأساة الفلاحين، بل يجعل من الشمعة الصغيرة استعارة عن الأمل الجماعي، وعن قدرة الإنسان على إشعال فجر جديد حتى في أحلك الظروف.
أسلوبه في القصة يمتاز بالبساطة والعمق، حيث يمنح التفاصيل اليومية بعدًا رمزيًا، ويجعل من الحكاية درسًا في أن مقاومة الظلم تبدأ بفكرة، وبشعلة صغيرة من الإيمان.
هذه القصة، كغيرها من أعمال تولستوي، تفضح قسوة النظام الإقطاعي الروسي، وتحتفي بقوة الروح الإنسانية حين تتكاتف في وجه الطغيان.

More peasant drama from Leo Tolstoy, this time with serf peasants who desire to kill their superintendent because he wants them to plow a field on Easter Monday.
The usual peasant drama ensues, yet one peasant manages to have his cake and eat it too by placing a candle on his plow while he works, wearing his Easter clothes, and singing beautiful hymns while he plows.
Of course, this gets back to the superintendent, and if you want to know how he reacts you will have to read this short story for yourself. The book does end with this moral though, "And thus the peasants clearly understood that the power of God is manifested not in evil, but in goodness."

“الشمعة الصغيرة” قصة قصيرة جميلة كتبها ليو تولستوي، تأخذك في رحلة بسيطة وعميقة إلى عالم الفلاحين، حيث تنقلب حياة “المعتمد” من الرفاهية والسلطة إلى الخسارة الكاملة، بسبب جشعه ورغبته في السيطرة.
مشكلة المعتمد لم تكن فقط في حبه للنفوذ، بل في رغبته العميقة باستعباد الناس، أن يخضعوا له طواعية حتى في أيامهم المقدسة. فحين أجبرهم على العمل في عيد الفصح، لم يكن الهدف الإنجاز، بل الإذلال.
أرسل العمدة ليتنصت عليهم، ليعرف كيف يتحدثون عنه، متوقعًا الغضب والشتائم. لكنه لم يتوقع أن أكثر ما سيؤذيه هو الهدوء.
فلاح واحد فقط لم يغضب، بل عمل بجد أكثر من غيره، مرتلًا بصوت منخفض وابتسامة على وجهه.
ضحك عليه الآخرون، لكنه لم يهتم، ومضى في عمله بسعادة وسلام داخلي حقيقي.
وهنا انكسرت نفس المعتمد. لم يستطع احتمال هذا النور، هذا الهدوء، هذه الحرية الصامتة التي لا تخضع لسلطته.
وبدأت رحلته نحو الانهيار… فخسر كل شيء: سلطته، ماله، مكانته، وحتى احترامه لذاته.
قصة أعجبتني ببساطتها وعمقها، تسلط الضوء على التناقض بين السلطة والكرامة، وتُظهر أن أقسى الهزائم قد تأتي من الهدوء لا من الثورة، ومن الإيمان لا من التمرد.
عبارة لا تُنسى:
“على الأرض السلام، وفي الناس المسرة.”

My least favorite of Tolstoy's short stories so far... well written but that's about it.

A parable. Shortest one. Tolstoy has a good message in some of his parables, but he is a very flawed delivery vehicle. Story is clunky and mildly horrific, as all the rest.
"The law of God is not to return evil for evil; indeed, if you try in this way to stamp out wickedness it will come upon you all the stronger."

In my head every single classical literature book must be a great work of art. This one was not. I hope there is a lesson in every book- a notion I know I gained from my english teachers when I was in school but if I'm being honest- this book felt like the author had taken a couple of scriptures and remixed it.
I'm not assigned by any religion and I know back in the day a lot of classical literature weaves the religious beliefs of the time into the literature- it was something culturally important and relevant- but this unfortunately didn't make for a good book that aged well. It was boring and dull.

In this story, Tolstoy develops the new testament injunction, "resist not evil'. An evil caretaker of a country estate, harasses the peasants so much that they plot to kill him. Only one pious peasant argues against it. According to him, nothing can justify an evil deed, not even the prevention of a greater evil. Ultimately the evil caretaker dies in a gruesome accident before the peasants can act. I think Tolstoy's message is that only God can dispense justice, not man.

The beautifully penned story of a revolution. The right course of action in the face of oppression. An oppressor who seeks redemption but meets his death before he can.
The amazing character, Peter, whose patient disposition blankets him from stress and negativity. While the rest of the serfs are grumbling and plotting, Peter carves a way and makes sure he enjoys the day.
It is truly remarkable how his faith in a higher power. And indeed, God takes care of everything.

The Candle is one of Tolstoy’s more forgettable short stories for me. The only obvious conclusion was that punishment is best chosen by God. But honestly, I would’ve been one of the complainers in the village. Why is murder presented as the only solution here? There are other ways to seek justice. The exaggeration undercut the moral lesson, leaving me unconvinced. For me, this short story stands among Tolstoy’s weaker efforts.

احببت المقدمة بشدة و توقعت اشتباك عنيف بين البروليتاريا و الرأسمالية، و للحظات توقعت وجود مكييف هو التيار الديني لإيصال فكرة انه لابد من المقاومة فالحقوق لا تؤخذ بالصلوات و الدعاء،
و لكن النهاية كانت بيضاء اي استسلام، و كما الافلام انتصر الحب و السلام، و السماء اقتصت من الشرير،
لا عجب ف تولستوي رجل سلام لم استغرب النهاية و لكن احببت ان تكون مختلفة.

قصة قصيرة عن القهر والظلم الي يعانيه بعض المحكومين من حاكميهم
وكنتيجة لهذا الظلم وقنوع المحكومين يزداد القهر واليأس
وينقسم المحكومين الي راغبين في الانتقام والثورة والمواجهة او خاضعين بالإجبار او خونة منافقين
ورغم الانقسام نهاية الظلم محتومة ومقدرة سواء اردنا ام لم نرد

1.5 stars! Overall this book was super confusing and I got so lost. The only part I liked about this book was it was about stuff I learned in history last year. I love reading historical books that I actually understand the background and why its happening.

I ABSOLUTELY Loved this book, i just wish the writing style was a bit more my speed but that’s okay! if your a christian i would definitely recommend reading this, if your not a religious person i wouldn’t expect you to love this book.
