Darrin Bainbridge is single, educated, fine and can cook. Salivating? Well stick to your appetizers, `cause this main course has more game than Milton Bradley. While he's honest, the last thing he's looking for is to be tied down with one woman. Maybe the problem is that Darrin hasn't met the woman that God has made for him.
Emoni Prentiss is `The Bishop's Daughter.' While she's never thought of herself as outwardly beautiful like her siblings, Emoni is still the full package, yet she's single. Well, technically she could have a man, Oscar, who everyone assumes will be her husband, but he's not the man she wants. She wants something that resembles what she reads in her steamy romance novels.
`The Bishop's Daughter,' by Tiffany L. Warren, has got to be one of the best books I've read. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the flow of the story and the fact that the author wasn't afraid to show that Christians have real issues. This is the first novel I've read by Tiffany L. Warren and I already find myself looking forward to what she has slated to release next. Readers who may stir clear of Christian Fiction for fear that it will be too preachy need not worry, `The Bishop's Daughter,' while it teaches to walk with Jesus, is also dripping in enough sin to blow the roof off the church.
This was a typical book with romance and drama, but it was mixed with church people. Some characters I didn’t really care for because of how they acted. What is usually expected from a Bishop and his family is kind of the opposite in this novel. Everyone in the bishop’s family seemed to have secrets and of course they all come out.
The Bishop's Daughter is about a man by the name of Darrin Bainbridge he is your typical playboy in need of love, but not yet ready. He is a freelance journalist trying to break his big story. After a visit from his mother, Darrin gets an idea. He has heard all kinds of stories about "Hollywood" ministers who hold their church services on television, live in nice houses, drive nice cars, and have lots of money and women. Darrin is repulsed by it all especially when his mother Priscilla starts shouting praises for Atlanta Bishop Kumal Prentiss. Darrin decides to go to Atlanta, become a member of the bishop's church, and expose him for the hustling fraud that he believes he is. But, he just never planned to fall in love with the bishop's daughter Emoni. I thought the book was good I think it keeps you wondering what's gonna happen next. But, it's not a book that you would stay up all night reading but it is interesting to read though .
Darrin Bainbridge is fortunate; fortunate to have wealthy parents to finance his up-and-coming writing career and most recent "big expose." He believes he's found the story that will launch his career - exposing the secrets of mega-church pastor Bishop Kumal Prentiss. What Darrin didn't account for, however, is the pastor's daughter, Emoni Prentiss. Finding himself falling for Emoni, Darrin is torn between the story of his career or maybe the woman of his life. Decisions, decisions, decisions...
Love, sin, forgiveness and conflict show up in this tale. Warren's Darrin Bainbridge is opportunistic. But it's his underlying sense of morality that makes us care about him. "The Bishop's Daughter" flows smoothly. An appealing read.
Darrin Bainbridge is a freelance writer anonymously known as "The Mad Black Blogger", and looking for a big break, professionally. Believing that all television preachers live the high life off of their parishioners, he decides to investigate a well-known televangelist to expose the man's hidden secrets. What he finds, instead, changes his life.
Emoni Prentiss, the Bishop's daughter, is a responsible young woman who manages her father's business affairs. She walks a straight line, hoping to marry a godly man. When Darrin shows up at church, it alters her life's course.
The intended audience is definitely African-American Christian. I was unfamiliar with the "brotha" and "booty" talk, as well as the church references of the "armor bearer" and the Bishop's wife being known as "The First Lady". I don't know if these terms are general to evangelical Christians or just the African-American church.
S*x is a prevalent theme throughout the book. While the one, main, s*x scene is not explicit, there is a lot of talk about s*x and booty. For instance, the first thing Darrin notices about Emoni is her booty, and he talks about that a lot with his brotha.
Naturally there is a great deal of preaching and many bible references. However, it's relevant to the storyline and thought-provoking and inspiring, rather than preachy. I found it refreshing. With all the preaching, there is also talk of sin and its consequences. However, this doesn't stop these characters from sinning, although there is mild regret expressed.
The chapters alternate from the first-person perspectives of Darrin and Emoni. We see each situation from both viewpoints and it actually works here.
This is one of my favorite Christian Fiction authors and I must say that she's done it again. This is her 3rd book and she has definitely stepped up her game from the first. Darrin-the writer/playboy gets an idea one day to write an article on backward Pastors. So he finds his mark;Bishop Prentiss in ATL and relocates there. As he gets closer to the Bishop and church family, he finds a lot more than he expected, including God and Bishop's daughter Emoni. Can he tell her the truth about why he really relocated there? Will he still write the story knowing that his career is on the line? This book is filled with love triangles, envy, temptation, and the good word.
This book was off...da...chain!! I really could not put it down. The writing was so down-to-earth and I could actually picture everything as I was reading it. The characters were great...it was just a great all-around book. LOVED it!
This was an Awesome Christian Fiction! It will make you laugh, cry and learn The Word of God through scripture and steps to help with and in relationships when struggling to leave the world of sin. It also lets you know being on God's Side is An Awesome experience that you never want to leave.
I loved this book!! It was a smooth read. It never had any really dull parts and you pretty much have strong set feelings for all the characters. This could have been a series honestly cause I want to know what happens with everyone in the family. How marriages go, if others get married. Just what happens to them. I this book was hard to put down but since I'm grown I had to but a couple times but I swear it was calling me lol. The drama in this book is something I think everyone can relate to. First book I have read by Tiffany L. Warren but because it was soooo good it will not be my last. I suggest this book to everyone that would like a good clean read.
This book was a good read. The character Darrin set out to write a scandal story on a well known Bishop but ends up changing his life and falling in love with the Bishop's daughter. He finds out something that would make a good story, but in the end, he chooses love.
A handsome young lady but not pretty. A college graduate and has no experience in the dating arena. But she is tired of feeling rejected and dismissed, and is committed to doing something different in her dating life. Emoni, sets her eyes on the new man at her Bishop’s Prentiss’ church. Can this type of man even notice her? He is so cute and so fine, and she is just plain….., plus he has that playboy persona and ways. Emomni has a lot to do if she thinks she can that playing playboy Darrin Bainbridge.
This Catholic woman of German heritage was definitely reading about another culture in this book. The Bishop's Daughter is about the daughter of the pastor of an African-American mega-church and her relationship not only with her family but also with a freelance reporter/blogger who is trying to break a big story. The big story he is trying to break is about her father. The reporter, a young, handsome "brother" from a wealthy family, learns about they church when his latest squeeze gets up on Sunday morning to watch it on TV. He is sure there is something wrong, some dirt than can be dug, so he moves from Cleveland, where his family lives to Atlanta, where the church is. At his first service at the church he is so moved by the pastor's words that he answers the altar call and is baptized. He is still looking for dirt, but he has already found the bishop's (pastor's) daugher and through her learns more about the bishop. During the course of the investigation, Darrin keeps readers informed through a blog, written by the Mad Black Blogger--but he doesn't tell them where the church is.
In some ways the story is universal. The woman doesn't believe she is beautiful and able to attract men, so the only one, until the reporter comes along, who is attracted to her is one she doesn't love. The reporter is following a career path with which his father disapproves, but he is doing it with Dad's money. It isn't until he decides to accept being cut off the dole that he is able to make the decisions on how to run his life. It is a story of sin and redeption and love conquering sin.
In other ways, like I said earlier, this German Catholic was clearly not reading about herself. As a kid I used to watch Sanford and Son and Goodtimes, and while they made me laugh, I found it hard to believe there were really people like that. This book was saturated with sex. No, it didn't have steamy descriptive sex scenes, but Darrin, before his baptism was far more interested in sex than in love. When he first notices the bishop's daughter, it is her body he notices. When another woman with whom he is keeping company comes over, they kiss briefly, then he reaches for her crotch. Darrin is the absolute characture of the hypersexual Black man.
A certain familiarity with the African American church is assumed. One male character is the bishop's "armor bearer"; a female character is his wife's armor bearer. Another female character is the church's "nurse" but while the job was never defined, for some reason I don't think the reference was to medical nursing. The pastor was called the bishop and his wife, the First Lady.
The book was an easy read and interesting. It wasn't just a predictable formula romance, though it had romantic elements. There was a lot of religious content but it was well integrated into the story, and fankly pretty essential to it.
Perfect for : Personal reading, book club read (discussion questions included)
In a nutshell: The book is written in three voices: 1. Darin Bainbridge 2. The Diary of a Mad Black Blogger (Darin's online blog personality), 3. Emoni Prentiss (the eldest daughter of Bishop Prentiss, single). Darin learns of Bishop Kumal Prentiss from his current fling, and decides that the Bishop and his 30,000+ followers are worth investigating - there has to be some scandal surrounding the Bishop! He travels from Cleveland to Atlanta to write the story, and as he goes to the church to begin investigating, his life begins to change in ways he least expected! It took quite a few chapters for me to really get hooked, but somewhere around chapter 14 I couldn't put the book down! This is a wonderful story about a pastor and his family, and how God works and touches everyone's lives.
Extended Review: He wants to write an expose about Bishop Prentiss, whom he is determined is cheating his 30,000+ followers somehow - Darin just needs to discover what he is doing! She wants to find a husband, but being the eldest daughter of Bishop Prentiss has made Emoni sort of off-limits so far! Darin is immediately appreciative of Emoni when he sees her in church, but he is determined not to become involved with her because it could compromise his goal of writing an expose on her father. The Bishops family is lovable in a quirky sort-of down-home way. I liked the fact that they were real people trying to make the best choices.
Characters: Darin Bainbridge is the son of a wealthy business owner who has been living off his father with the help of his mother, he is now on a mission to write an expose article about Bishop Prentiss, a very successful preacher with 30,000+ followers. Darin also writes a blog: The Diary of a Mad Black Blogger, where he talks about what is going on in his life/investigations. Then we have the handsome (not pretty) Emoni Prentiss, the single, eldest daughter of Bishop Prentiss.
Story-Line: We get a good look into the Bishop's family - both ups and downs - as Darin joins the church and becomes close to the family during the course of his investigation. Darin too undergoes life changing events, and must ultimately decide whether or not to share what he does learn about the family.
Readability: I struggled with the a little of the blogging dialect, but grew used to it. Otherwise, the book was a fairly easy and quick read.
Overall: I've never really considered what it would be like to be a pastor's daughter. This book presented readers with a nice look into one such family, and how faith and family impacted each person, including friends of the family. In the end, we learn that sometime it is good to leave some skeletons in the closet, while embracing others. I enjoyed the ending of the book and feel that the discussion questions at the end are very thoughtful.
Tiffany L. Warren has written an interesting and refreshing novel entitled The Bishop’s Daughter. Darrin Brainbridge, a freelance blogger decides to travel from Cleveland to Atlanta in pursuit of his first big story, an expose on Bishop Kumal Prentiss. Upon arriving in Atlanta, Darrin initially thinks his journalistic instinct of scandal brewing in the congregation was wrong. However, he quickly learns his instincts were completely on point.
We come into Darrin’s life when he is a true player at heart. He’s your typical pretty boy metro sexual type of guy. He keeps a fresh pedicure, has a slamming bachelor pad decked out with baller style furniture, and he can make ladies melt with his “Emeril Lagasse” cooking skills. Darrin is a great catch for any woman, complete with deep pockets from his parents’ transportation business.
Enter Emoni Prentiss. When Darrin sees Emoni for the first time at the Freedom of Life Church mega-church in Atlanta, he is intrigued to say the least until he finds out the she is ‘The Bishop’s Daughter’. Little does Darrin know, Emoni is intrigued as well and would love to get to know Darrin better. Eventually, the two start dating and Darrin is torn between hurting the woman and family he has grown to love by exposing their secrets and making a name for him in the journalism world.
Told from the perspective of both Darrin and Emoni, The Bishop’s Daughter was a delight to read. This is a book about forgiveness and finding yourself. Readers are able take a fictional journey into the lives of multiple characters. Eventually, you arrive with Darrin at his moment of self-discovery--the point in his life when he begins to see the errors of his ways and starts to imagine a path toward redemption.
Don't expect everything to be tied together neatly at the end. Warren leaves the readers with a few loose ends to ponder. I like that - an author demanding the participation of the reader after the novel is completed. I will definitely continue to look for more work by this author in the future.
What did you like about the book? I liked the author’s ability to write different voices. She is able to tell the story from both a male and female perspective. I also enjoyed the unexpected ending of the book and the various Biblical scriptures throughout – very thought provoking.
What did you dislike about the book? In my opinion, the events that took place in the last few chapters of the book seemed a bit rushed.
What could the author do to improve the book? Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. However, as I stated, some of the last few chapters moved too fast. Perhaps slowing some of the chapters down a bit would help. For example, the relationship between Emoni and Darrin progressed rather quickly.
tiffanylwarren Traveling from Cleveland, Ohio to Atlanta, Georgia has been so much fun. I liked all of the characters. The ones I did not like are not worth mentioning. However, I will mention Oscar. He wants to marry Emoni, the bishop's daughter. Emoni does not return his feelings. I don't blame her. Oscar turned me off from the very beginning. He proves that being too good gives the impression of being no good.
The Bishop's Daughter by Tiffany L. Warren is the type of Christian fiction I want to read all the time. It's "real." The dialogue, the characters, the circumstances in the book are like people I have known or do know at the present time. The author made me realize the importance of blogs in the world today. Darrin throughout the novel keeps a blog telling his friends what is going on in his life. These breathing spots in the novel gave me time to laugh and release the steam building up due to what was happening in the pastor's life, in Sascha's life and in Darrin and Emoni's life. Sascha is Emoni's sister. She is going through her larger than life drama. Tyler, Emoni's brother, is going through dramatic experiences too. Not to mention how Kumal and his mother's life change.
With all that is going on in the novel I was able to focus in on a few facts. One, real love does not have to be blood proven. Secondly, what motivates us can change from bad to good. Therefore, the lesson is well worth a repeat. Love is never stagnant because our minds are always grappling with ways to blend our lives with other people in our part of the world. I am led to think God's Love is like pure spring water. Our love is rippling and splashing forward to become like GOD'S LOVE. Darrin's life meaning is a testimony that love can change its route no matter how many rocks or twigs are in the way. Where love is concerned there is no obstacle.
The Bishop's Daughter follows Emoni, the eldest daughter of Bishop Prentiss; as well as Derrin Bainbridge, her love interest. Emoni is the ever reliable, girl-next-store who sometimes tries too hard not to be a "wild PK" (preacher's kid). Darrin is a handsome and together writer but living off his parent's money. He wants the story of a lifetime but is unwilling to betray the Prentiss Family, that had brought him into their lives. The two navigate their feelings for each other while trying to balance their futures.
The story is beautiful and not-at-all preachy. It is enthralling, I took this for some "bathtub reading" and read the whole thing in one sitting. The character's are relatable, and the book leaves you with a peaceful satisfied feeling.
Darrin is rich, sexy and single. He is a blogger who decides to uncover the unholy world of a mega-preacher. Darrin lives the good life. Women throw themselves at him and he has his mothet wrapped around his little finger. He leaves Cleveland and goes to Atlanta to embark on his journey of sabatoge. What he finds might change his life forever.
Emoni is walking strong with God. She is the eldest daughter of Bishop Prentiss. A successful mega preacher. Emoni has tried all her life to not be a "wild child" but she is beginning to think her efforts are futile.
This was an awesome Christian Fiction books. I have been in a Tiffany Warren mod lately and cannot put her books down. A great book for a club discussion or review. A 5 star read.
Really well told story of Darrin, the handsome, only son of a well-to-do family in Cleveland. Darrin's a blogger still sponging off his parents due to a monthly allotment his mother sneaks him.
After observing his current flavor of the month going to "chutch" via cable tv, he quickly estimates how much the bishop must be raking in. Surely there's a story here and Darrin wants to be the one to expose it!
Bishop Prentiss is drug addict turned pastor father of 3. Eldest daughter Emoni is the most dedicated of his children and still a virgin at 24. Meeting Emoni throws a monkey wrench into Darren's undercover investigation.
This book was a good read. I loved the way Darrin came to Atlanta for one reason but found God in the process as well as love. The author kept it real even though it was Christian fiction, she interjected how we as male/females really act with one another as well as how leaders still have a past and struggle in as well. The PK kids were your normal kids, they had faults as well. The book really showed the love of Christ shining forth and I really did enjoy it. Keep writing Tiffany L. Warren I'll keep reading!
A beautiful story about forgiveness & love! The Bishop and his family had a wonderful opportunity to practice what they ministered. They hesitated somewhat but, praise & glory to God...they did it by the grace & mercy of God! I would love to see how the relationship between Emoni and Darrin develops! What in the world is Bishop Prentiss gonna do with the info that is in that envelop?? I so was not ready for this story to end:-(.
Darrin Bainbridge is a young man that is known as a ladies man. Darrin wants to become a writer; he goes to Atlanta to dig up dirt on a well-known Bishop of Atlanta. Once in Atlanta Darrin begins to date the Bishop’s daughter, only to fall in love with her. An excellent read! Loved the blogging…..
I laughed and sighed reading these pages!! Everyone knows least one Sister Ophelia, Trustee Williams and a Dorcas! Emoni and Darrin had me wondering if I was going to make to the end of their story! There's room for more but the beginning was on and popping!! Will there be more on Darrin & Emoni??
I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wondering what would happen next. But it also teaches us that everyone can change and no one is perfect. I recommended this book to several friends.
this to was a good book also .IT'S ABOUT A YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS A VIRGIN AND SHE WAS TRYING REAL HARD TO TO BE WHAT HER FATHER WANTED HER TO BECOME ONE DAY.
