Grumpy Bunnies have a very busy day getting ready for school, learning lessons, playing on the playground, snacking on crackers after school, and going to bed. From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1-In this story told in rhyme, groggy wake ups, lumpy oatmeal, and "frumpy faces" start the day for three little rabbits. At school, their outlook changes as they go "jungle gymming" and enjoy "munching lunches," and "learning lessons/numbers/dancing/songs and sings." The day continues to improve with a "huggy mommy," bubble bath, and a comfy bed. These bunnies need their sleep because "there's another day ahead." Youngsters will identify with the siblings and their slow, grumpy start. Descriptive phrases such as "stumble bumbling" and "snuffle snoring" linger as children read and laugh through this sweet book. The watercolor pictures capture the animals' changing moods and the familiar details of home and school. Melanie S. You probably haven’t read Grumbly Bunnies, by Willie Welch and Tammie Lyon. I am guessing, of course: I don’t know if you’ve actually read it or not. But I imagine I’m right because — right now — the book is ranked 2,497,499th in sales rank on Amazon.
That’s a shame because it’s an absolutely brilliant book. Although the illustrations are great, and the message to kids (the day gets better) is important, what’s really spectacular is the absolute command of meter — it’s a true joy to read something aloud that goes like
Grumbly bunnies in the morning, crusty eyes and groggy yawns, stumble bumbling in the closet, struggle putting school clothes on. If you have little kids, do yourself a favor and get this book.
