Kyoshiro and Kyo--one a peaceful medicine seller, the other a merciless red-eyed samurai--are two spirits fighting for dominance of the same body as they travel with Yuya, a bounty hunter who helps them look for Kyo's true body.
Akimine Kamijyo (上条明峰 Kamijō Akimine?, born September 13, 1975, Kanagawa Prefecture) is a Japanese manga artist best known for creating Samurai Deeper Kyo. The name 'Akimine Kamijyo' is merely her pen-name. Her doujinshi work was done under the name 'Meika Hatagashira' (伯明華?).
Her second series was Shirogane no Karasu also known as Silver Crow. It started on May 30, 2007 in Weekly Shōnen Magazine and ended after 3 volumes.
The story is a bit dull when it starts off with Yuya and Kyoshiro. But as you progress, the plot thickens and newly cast members introduced piece by piece make this manga unique and a bit of a masterpiece. There are two main story lines: 1- Yuya is looking for the man that killed her brother and 2- Kyo is searching for his true body to exact his revenge. Every other plot in between just adds fuel to the story and lets you learn of the diverse background of many characters, friends or foes. The story itself was captivating and it is a shame that many people know of this series.
The art style refined over time, giving the battle scenes flaws execution. The each character had their own torments and demons to deal with but I would have to say that certain individuals needed more evolution or better backstory. The end was well received and left no stone unturned.
I have watched the anime adaptation and I don't recommend it. It doesn't do it justice.
I think I've already said this in a previous review, but I'll repeat it here: The way the Mibu dudes think is kind of disturbing. Like the Saishi character, you'd think she'd see Saisei as a friend, but nope. It's like Saisei is a toy or something even less than that to Saishi. That being said seeing Akira have his moment was nice.
Akira does some serious ass-whooping in Samurai Deeper Kyo, Volume 17. I gained a whole new respect for this strong-willed warrior. In fact, I probably admire his tenacity and strength the most out of all the Four Emperors we've met. This volume has turned me into an adoring Akira fan.
The fold-out front cover with Bontenmaru, Kyo, Akira, and Yuya is gorgeous! Every volume should have one. It'd be fun to put these on your wall, but who would want to ruin their books?
This series is so damn good! I am having way too much fun re-reading it! Can't wait to read the next one!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Today’s post is on Samurai Deeper Kyo Volume 17. It is written by Akimine Kamijyo and is published by Tokyopop. As it is the 17th in the series you need to have read the previous volumes to understand the story. The cover is special for this volume as it pulls out into a beautiful artwork; it has Akira, Yuya, Bontenmaru and Kyo on it. The intended reader is someone likes fighting manga, good characters, and interesting plot. This volume has some strong language, nudity, and lots of violence; older teen and adults only. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- At the second gate, the battle between Akira and Saisei begins. As the blind genius Akira falls before the might of the beautiful and mysterious Saisei, she reveals her true identity to him. Is there any way that Akira can survive this confrontation with another timeless samurai mater?
Review- I have a love hate relationship with blurbs in general but the blurbs for this series are not good enough. This blurb would make you think that 1. Akira thought he was going to lose, and 2. That Saisei’s true identity has anything to do with the main story. It does not; it is just a minor plot point during the fight. That is it. Two pages to ‘discover’ and talk about it then they move on. The important plot things that are happening in this volume is we get to Akira truly fight. He does not hold back on Saisei and he proves that there is a reason that Kyo kept him around. Akira is no push-over. He has so many cool moments in this volume. I like to think of this as Akira’s cool volume because he just so awesome. Everyone and everything else takes a back seat to this fight and Akira’s awesome ice mastery. And for bonus we to see Arika lose his cool for the second fight of this volume. I highly recommend this series.
I give this manga a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
So Akira takes the reins of this volume and kicks some ass. Can I just say that I love Bontenmaru and his narration?? He is such a fun character- definitely one of my favorites! He adds just the right amount of humor to the series and is constantly scratching his junk. What a dude!
We end this volume with the demise of the guardians of the second gate- but now our clan will have to decide which door to open. The wrong one will kill Yuya. I look forward to finding out where we go next.
This volume was focused on Akira and facing down the nursey-witchy Mibu Stars. Good fight-manga fun, with lots "now I've got you, no you don't, now I do." Way more fan service than I'd like, but SDK is consistently a good time.
